    Departing to the fair

We were looking for an outing and we found this. They are strict on their hours, so we spent time outside visiting the Budweiser Clydesdales. It really made our day. Back to the meat lab. As soon as the clock struck two, the students swarmed the lab. The meat is that good. We had the chuck roast for dinner. It was very tasty. We still need to eat our ground beef. We'd go again in a heart beat. My husband thought with the name meat lab, they were growing meat.

Here's what I did with the Filet Mignon!

After finishing my four-year degree at UC Davis, I finally found this unknown place that no one has heard about! Yes! I finally found where I can find some cheap, fresh, and delicious meat! Here are some QUICK BITS: (1) Cash and check only. (2) Come early - they run out of items very fast. (3) Know what you want before coming here because it's kind of hectic with lots of customers cramped in a small room. (4) Opens on Thursdays and Fridays only. (5) Check out the menu: http://animalscience.ucdavis.edu/facilities/MeatLab/Meat_Lab_Pamphlet.pdf (6) Place is hard to find, the website and a map if you scroll down: http://animalscience.ucdavis.edu/facilities/meat.htm (7) Meat are fresh and some are frozen. (8) Location: Meat Laboratory Cole Facility Building "C" Here's what I had so far: (1) Filet Mignon, $13.50 per lbs: I thought it was a-okay when I cooked it. Soft, yet a little rough to eat. I pan-friend it to give it a brown-ish grilled look, then stuck it in the oven for awhile, and took it out to leave it to stand for awhile with foil wrapped. 3.5 stars. Here's what I did: http://www.yelp.com/biz_photos/5TC9z1FXVk5jsD9r2ukYGQ?select=yrnf73Cmfl2qx1zsTVH3QA (2) Top Sirloin Steak, $6.35 per lbs: from my experience this runs out a lot faster. Better than the filet mignon. Marinated with some red wine, pepper, salt, etc.. and grilled it. Very simple. 4 stars. (3) Bone-in Ribeye, $9.00 per lbs: I set this cut in the BBQ and marinated with some cracked pepper and sea salt. 5 stars. Delicious! (4) Pepper Jack Cheese: Cheap! It lasted me for a whole month, although it was moldy after awhile. (5) Eggs: cheap organic eggs! **OVERALL: Stay at home and cook! It's cheaper and better quality if you want to get meat. 5 stars!

Chicken plate came with 1 thigh drizzled with sauce a portion of Mac n cheese and a roll. JUST MY OPINION HERE, But the chicken taste like charcoal and Mac n cheese has no flavor. Portion does not justify the 18 dollar price tag either. Maybe the ribs or tri tip is better?

You'll see the truck around Sacramento and Davis. I tried them out a few weeks ago. I asked the cashier what was their best seller. He mentioned that they are known for their lamb. Well they are called Smokin'Ewe BBQ. So I gave that a try. I have had lamb before but never smoked BBQ. My order came out quickly. All the hot items came out hot and the cold was cold as it should be. The lamb was sliced thin. All so tender, melt in your mouth texture and tenderness. Lamb in general is gamey tasting. This lamb had the typical gamey taste with a deep bbq smokiness. At first bite, my tastebuds were confused. After several bites, they connected to my brain and luvin it. Traditional lamb flavors melded with smoky BBQ goodness. The plate came with potato salad, baked beans, and a bread roll. I also received a container of what looked like sauce that resembled a herb seasoned sour cream. Being LI, I didn't eat it. The potato salad was traditional and served deliciously chilled. Luved it. I forgot to ask if the beans contained HFCS, so I passed on eating it. It looked and smelled good though. They had other menu items besides lamb such as tri tip, brisket, ribs, chicken, pulled pork and hot links served as an entree plate $19 or a sandwich $14. 3 ribs $10. Mac n cheese $8-14. Sides $7. Nachos $8-14. Even the mac cheese was smoked low and slow. Mmm.

My family and I decided to walk around and as we were about to cross the street, out of the corner of my eye I spotted an intriguing window display...of tinned fish! Be still my bougie heart and the cookbooks, totes, art prints, artisanal and local cheeses, breads and spreads! They had just moved from a smaller location and this little house front made it all the more charming. My husband laughed and said it was like Mabel's had manifested itself knowing I would be there that day. The owner (Shelley I believe) was so warm and welcoming. She was sweet to my toddler and clearly had experience as a mother/aunt/grandmother to someone because she charmed my daughter who is usually very shy. I walked away with a gorgeous tinned fish print of one of my favorite local artists, and a tote full of tinned fish from brands I enjoy and others I had not tried before. The selection is vast and really offers so much for both experienced and new converts to tinned fish. Mabel's is THE place to come to for your picnicking needs. Grab a blanket and make your way here to grab stuff. Small sized spreads make it easy, and all you need is some bread or crackers, fresh fruit and salami, chocolate and tinned fish of course! The wonderful people who work here make Mabels Market. Because you feel like you have a friend who is looking out for you; to ensure you have the best experience. So support this lovely business because we all need a little tinned fish.
