After using Uber for a year, the quality of the drivers/rides have gone down. I remember my first experience with uber on my vacation in San Francisco, more than a year ago. It was a nice, relatively new black car, with a light up Uber sign displayed clearly in the dash. I was impressed. Coming back to the East Coast, my Uber experience has been lackluster: beat up looking cars, dirty cars with a stain on the back seat, drivers switching cars on me, drivers not knowing where they were going and told me to use my GPS to navigate for them. One driver I had 2 weeks ago was stellar and offered me water to drink and chewing gum and made easy conversation, but those drivers are rare and few and far between.
However, the incident today tops the cake. First, while trying to request my Uber, I was prompted with some rather intrusive banter for their Uber Pool feature asking how many seats I would take up and whether I want to share my ride with other riders. No, I don't want to wait for my driver to pick up some stranger and drop me off along the way. I'm in a hurry and need to get to my destination on time. If I wanted to wait, I would just have taken the bus.
I managed to get past the annoying app prompt and requested my own Uber, it was arriving in 3 minutes. I live on a rather busy, well trafficked street in Center City. I went down stairs from my apartment, and as I was locking the doors, I saw a girl talking on the phone about to get into a car that just pulled up. It was a rather nice, new looking, Nissan. Meanwhile, a shoddy beat up looking Volkswagen pulls up right behind as the Nissan drives off with the girl in it. I quickly panicked, checked my phone to verify the driver/car model, and realized what I dreaded: the girl had gotten in my Uber and the driver just drove off. Well of course, I wasn't going to get in the shoddy looking Volkswagen that was supposed to be the other girl's actual Uber (she probably would have felt shortchanged, too, if she had noticed), so I just told the driver that her patron had gotten into my car. He didn't say anything or offer to help and just drove off, too. 3 minutes into the trip (saw the car on my app driving the highlighted route), I figured out how to cancel the ride, but was unable to contact the driver (since the app assumed I was in the car). Rather shaken from this harrowing experience that happened in a span of a few minutes, I attempted to request a different Uber but was prompted with a nasty 2.1X price surge due to high demand. NO Uber! Your driver picked up the wrong customer and now you're trying to saying I have to pay more 10 minutes later? I ended up calling a Lyft instead which did not have the price surge, and arrived at my destination 25 minutes late due to the debacle
This was the most harrowing experience I've had with Uber. The driver picked up the wrong person, didn't verify the name or the destination with that person, and just drove off. The girl that took the wrong car is kinda naive, too. She could have been abducted. UBER FAIL.
I will be using Lyft from now on; Lyft has a more personalized experience (pretty much forces you into adding a profile picture upon sign up and asks for your music preference), no stupid ride sharing feature, and NO ridiculous price surges (most I've gotten was 1.75x higer fare, never more than 2x+). read more
