Uber will always get 5 stars from me. Living in one of the 5th largest cities in the U.S., it is often hard, no, impossible to be anything other than a nameless face in a crowd, an otherwise anonymous customer number or just a delivery address. As many issues that Philly might have, there is an unfettered joy and sense of adventure for me with the random, chance encounters the city offers. As I am conveyed back and forth to the South Street vet with my sick little white cat, once again I get to have some funny, interesting, happy, poignant and occasionally simply dull, yawning interactions with Uber's legions of drivers. I love getting a minute peek into the thoughts and lives of these drivers who are so often taken for granted and treated like robots. Sure, some of these folx have complicated lives, second and third jobs and want nothing more to get through their shift in peace and quiet. As an introvert, I always test the conversational waters when I step into an Uber vehicle. If the driver answers me in monosyllables, I take it he or she simply wants to drive, thus I keep to myself. Some drivers are possibly bored yet enthused about chatting so as a result I have been privileged to learn about their families, their country of origin, their snack preferences, some of the odd/interesting/pesky passengers they've conveyed, music tastes and most of all-how connected everyone of us really are. Almost as good, since I don't drive, is having the little kid in me awakened and absolutely thrilled at going out for a car ride. (Sure, it isn't free but the little boy in me never even considers that. He simply has a blast seeing the city from a vehicle...) While Uber is a business, it would be nothing without its drivers. Sure, sometimes they are slow to arrive or they flip your trip to another driver. From time to time, a driver is having a rotten day and acts out a bit. Examine your conscience. Haven't you had similar days or nights, no matter what you do for a living? Rather than bitching and moaning, treat your Uber ride as a way to connect with someone you'd probably never meet in your regular social circle. See your driver like the unique, silly, grouchy, aspiring, single parenting, hard working, dream filled human being they are; under the t-shirt, under the jacket, under the trucker's cap, behind the knock off shades-they are someone just like you. read more

On Monday, January 19, 2026 about 3;30 pm, I decided to call an Uber for a ride from Whole Foods. The app promised it would arrive in just 13 minutes. However, after waiting and trying to reach the driver with a call and a text--without any response--I found myself increasingly frustrated. Yeah I just thought you got to pay $20 to retrieve your item if you accidentally dropped it or lost it inside the Uber. I took a ride across me $7 I dropped my item that's only like $7 and they charge me $20 to retrieve it it's like holding your item for ransom. So I look at it like if it's an item that's not worth retriever leave it be and if it is worth retrieving more likely you won't be able to get it and they won't reimburse you but yet they will charge you $20 to retrieve your own items. Uber eats is trash. I ordered a box of food from McDonalds. 2 cheeseburgers, 2 Big Macs, a 10 piece, 4 fries. Everything was fine except For the big Macs. there's 2 patties on a Big Mac. I got 2 Big Macs, lettuce, 3 slices of bread, 2 cheese Slices and zero beef. I was astounded. They did it twice. before I noticed, I took a bite and was confused. I place an order to Uber eat from Philadelphia and my order was placed in New Jersey that is every far from me. So when the food got here it's was cold and by reheating it lost quality. I would never use Uber eat again. I reached out to Uber but nothing was done. All they can say is wait for the food that took 2hrs to get to us. I would give Uber a no star but it won't let me. So I would be really careful placing an order with Uber eat so you don't go through what me and my family had to go through just to eat. All the agent can say is wait like we wasn't waiting for hours already when we have the same restaurant we order from in Philadelphia near my area but instead my order was placed in Jersey. I took Uber a few times in Philadelphia and was happy that the experience was great every time. There was pretty much no wait and I had great conversations with the drivers which is one of my favorite things about using ride share. I ordered an Uber ride for 7:45 A.M one morning, 3 days in advance. The morning of my ride I received several texts from Uber. The first said that my appointment was for 7:00 A.M. (WRONG!). The next said that the Uber car was at the pickup location and that I should make my way to the car. There was NO UBER CAR There! This was right in front of my house-I was standing there in my coat. There are only a few cars on my block- It even gave the deiver's name, the license plate number of the car, and the model of the car! The drivers are generally really nice! The problem is Uber! I've been getting getting sucked in with "Ride in 4 minutes..." but it gets followed with "Ride in 8 minutes...", Ride in 11 minutes...", "Ride in 8 minutes...", "Ride in 14 minutes..." etc. It's like a pinball machine of ETAs. Finally, this evening I got, "We had to cancel your ride. Please rebook it..." Fat chance. First, Uber drivers are great. The issues are about the company. Uber thinks it is perfect and makes contacting their support nearly imposable. Hence the poor rating in Yelp. 1] I have set my home address correctly. However, Uber mapping changes to the wrong address. This has cost me additional charges. 2] Confirmed pickups take much longer that the app time. Recent trip was confirmed with a driver that was .5 mile away, with a 2 minute arrival time. Actual arrival time was 15 minutes. Driver should have been experienced to realize that international arrivals take several hours to process through Border Patrol, Customs and baggage. The driver showed up just before airline expected arrival time and waited barely an hour when he inadvertently cancelled the contract and charged for the ride not taken, plus a tip for himself. They completely lie when it comes to pick up times where they force you to buy the Uber x or priority pickup for shorter wait times and still make you wait longer then what the wait n save for a cheaper ride would cost. It's rare to find a company that's consistently bad and does nothing to improve. It's less common for something you think is bad and it can't get worse. Uber and UberEats fills that void. The way Uber trains their employees to treat customers, the boiler plate useless and ineffective responses are the least client centric of any company I have ever encountered, both professionally and personally. They do not care about customer satisfaction. They lack accountability. They don't solve problems. They have no qualms about letting you order and never delivering it. They deliver food like warm too cold. That's acceptable, and they do nothing to show remorse, nor understand that people are relying on them to provide a service that's necessary to perform, and not lack dependability. Never have they apologized or corrected a bad situation. Lack of humility isn't a positive trait. It must start at the top, be company culture and work its way through. When you order food through UberEats and the driver shows up at the restaurant after it's closed, it costs the business owner money. They don't reimburse the owner. Uber's business model is not one that doesn't provide anything mutually beneficial. They're consistent. They take advantage of businesses by taking a hefty percentage of the order total, and they provide horrific service. Uber is a company that at its inception had more positives than negative. Then came surge pricing, where at the busiest times when they know people need service, they charge as much as possible. So, regardless of whether you're a merchant or a customer, Uber is the relationship you want to avoid- all take, no give, unappreciative, disrespectful, and no class. We love Uber and have no complaints about their service in the City of Brotherly Love. My spouse is from Pennsylvania so we come here quite often. Taxi fares from PHL into City Center ran anywhere from $50+ depending on traffic of course. With Uber X, we got flat rates around $30, along with a clean car and professional driver. Quick jaunts within the city were just as affordable and easy. GPS pick up location was pretty accurate with the driver always finding us. We've had no canceled or canceled-on fares here. Surging prices? Try using them in NYC, then you can talk to me about surging prices! OVERALL: Still a great service. I wholeheartedly agree with Warren W.'s Uber review. As someone without wheels of any kind, Uber has been a godsend in those cases where I didn't feel like taking multiple buses, or I'm out late, or the weather is bad, or I've overslept, or SEPTA doesn't reach my particular location. As Warren stated, I think back to a time about 15 years ago when I also didn't have wheels and what a huge pain it was to get around on SEPTA. Especially when I did my food shopping and had to either push a cart home or schlep my groceries onto the bus. Or if I had to take multiple buses that didn't line up. How did I survive without Uber? Not my first visit to the hub but I decided to "YELP" them. I do have to say it's good to be able to talk face to face with an Uber rep. Talking to them & emailing seems to get nowhere. The office is FOR DRIVERS ONLY. So if an Uber rider has questions, try email or Twitter. Every time I visit, the staff is polite to me & try their best to resolve any issues you may have. I've also seen the team work in that they try to help each other out. They will also consult a supervisor if needed. The office is clean & tidy even with a lot of drivers passing thru. I do think they should have complimentary coffee or a coffee/soda & snack machine tho.
