In one day, I used the service three times to get around Detroit and would echo others' assessment that the process is well thought out. It's useful to know that Uber is not extremely cheap, but does seem a little more transparent and a lot more convenient than most taxi services. A few tips for new riders? 1) Get a code to use with your first ride. The person sharing it with you will get a credit (hence, why you'll find dozens of the things online) and you'll get between $20-30 to use on your first ride. This is the service's version of "try-before-you-buy". 2) Tips aren't expected. It's a signature feature of the service and it really does make the end of a ride much smoother. 3) You can get a quote estimate for trips before placing your request. In my limited experience, these are usually pretty close. Expect for the actual cost to be on the higher end of the range... 4) Signing up via the app is not a long or complicated process, but give yourself at least 5-10 minutes to do so before you expect to request your first ride. 5) Per my first driver, Uber fares tend to work best on short trips. Longer ones, such as Downtown to DTW are probably less expensive by cab. 6) Don't be surprised if one of the following happens: a) you request Uber and a cab shows up (some of the local cab drivers have started taking Uber rides in addition to working for the cab companies. It seems strange, but is rider-friendly in many cases); b) a driver asks you about your Uber experience in other cities (3 of 3 rides in my case); c) a driver asks if you're going to need another ride later. Depending on how long your stop will be, they may offer to wait nearby for your follow-up request. read more

$98 for an 11mile RIDE!!!! I was in love with this concept the first 2 times I used it until last night..... I used my free ride which saved me $14, when it was time to head home at 2 a.m my estimate ride said it would cost $24. The next day I look at my uber receipt and said that my credit card was charged $98 for my 11.6 mile ride home!!! I could have took a cab for half that price. I was NEVER told about "surge pricing". So basically after a concert, sporting event, or after 1am prices drastically increase. Sad to say I will not be using Uber EVER again. read more

UBER is the best and the only way to go in Detroit. Do not use the taxis in Detroit. They do not turn their meters, they cheat you out of money, they take the longer route, they are rude and scary. I did both UBER and Taxis( the taxis were out of desperation because they were right there the second I was leaving my event). Uber as a billion dollar world wide conglomerate, might be able to take you from point A to point B, and back again, BUT their customer service (or lack thereof) is a total disgrace and embarrassment. My card they say is no good but when I've called PayPal , PayPal runs a test its fine. I get text saying it goes through. They do not have phone # to call. They do not answer emails.
