The post office was designed by Louis A. Simon in a Mission Revival style. In addition to serving as a post office, the building also held civic functions for the town. On February 11, 2092 it was added to the U.S. National Register of Historic Places. The post office closed in 2001 in order to push traffic towards two newer locations. Fort Pierce purchased the property from the U.S. Postal Service in 2002. The city was looking for someone to operate a business in the building in keeping with their Orange Avenue plan which requires new businesses that open to support museums, art, culture, or music. In 2017, Ft. Pierce sold the Post Office for $139,000 to Fort Pierce residents who planned to capitalize off the Fort Pierce market and use the building to turn it into a 5 day a week local goods market inside. Construction of the market was supposed to have begun in the summer of 2017. The city turned down other offers from people who didn't have a concrete development plan. So far nothing has been done and the building remains empty.

It is also known as the Sunrise City, sister to San Francisco, California, the Sunset City. When I lived in South Florida for Forty Years I really loved to drive up the coast to Fort Pierce. I spent many days getting there early before Sunrise and swimming and surfing at the beach. I'd always pack up the truck with a cooler full of food and drinks. I've got pleasant memories of a clean place to live. I'd definitely consider living here if I intended to move back to Florida. I like the current demographics. Fort Pierce is not a party atmosphere like the South Florida Gold Coast. It was a getaway to me. I'm recommending you visit.

Hatcher also designed the historic Sunrise theater in downtown Ft. Pierce. The town hall was constructed in 1925 at the height of at the Florida land boom by builder C.E. Cahow. This building was used as the Fort Pierce City Hall until 1983 when a new larger and more modern town hall was built next to it. This building was the first one in the downtown to be restored. Work on it was completed in 1995 at a cost of $500,000. It was added to the U.S. National Register of Historic Places on December 7, 2001. Today the second floor is available to be rented for private events.

The three story building was designed in the Masonary Vernacular Art Modern style by architect W.H. Garns and built between 1926 and 1937 by James T. Vocelle with money he received from the Public Works Administration to build a courthouse for the newly formed county. In later years the courthouse became too small for the growing community and the court moved to a new building. On July 19, 1999 the courthouse was added to the National Register of Historic Places. Today the building has a 2,400 square foot banquet hall on the second floor that can be rented for weddings and receptions, lectures, seminars, business meetings, fundraisers, and parties. There are some sculptures in front of the building but my favorite feature is the classical cherub light poles in the front.

We were also seated late, and our appetizers took quite a while to come out. The sodas were also extremely watered down. The furniture didn't feel particularly sturdy or comfortable either--the booth kept shaking, and whenever the person sitting behind me leaned back, it would push into my back. Honestly, these things may not have bothered me as much if the situation with the manager had been handled with more kindness. Gaby was wonderful, and the steak was great. The sides were just okay. Unfortunately, the overall experience, especially the manager's approach, left a negative impression.

House of Seven Gables is a historic home turned visitors center in Ft. Pierce. It was built in…read more1905. In 1943 it was a house of prostitution frequented by servicemen during WWII. In 1987 it was sold at auction and used as a taxidermy studio. In 1997 the house was donated to the city of Fort Pierce and moved to its present location on June 31, 1998. In 2000 the St. Lucie Chamber of Commerce opened the house as a visitor's center providing information about things to do in the area and places to stay and eat at. The volunteers who work here answer visitors questions and also give free tours of the house. If you are in the area it is worth a stop especially since the A. E. Backus Museum and Gallery and Manatee Observation and Education Center are located on either side of the House of Seven Gables.

Originally called Market Place apartments it was built to be the centerpiece of the planned community of San Lucie Plaza but the collapse of the Florida land boom halted the project. The building was added to the U.S. National Register of Historic Places on June 2, 1984. Amelia Earhart is said to have a connection to Casa Caprona. Dorothy Binney whose father created Crayola Crayons lived there with her two children by David Putnam. After their divorce David Putnam married Amelia Earhart who used to visit her step son who was taking flying lessons from her technical advisor. Casa Caprona was badly damaged from the 2004 hurricanes but it has since been completely restored with new barrel tile roof, stairways, windows, and stucco. The building is now condominiums.

The Tangelo House was formerly known as Ryburn's Apartment Building. It is located in the Royal…read morePark subdivision developed by Waldo Sexton and the Atlantic Construction Corporation. Arthur G. McKee was an early investor in the company and handled the lot sales. Mr. Ryburn purchased lot 8 on July 21,1926 for the construction of an right unit, two story apartment building. The building was designed in the Mission Revival style of architecture. One of the most notable early tenants was Bud Holman who was instrumental in bringing the Dodgers to Vero Beach. The Tangelo is the last remaining of four similarly built apartment from the 1920's along Royal Palm Blvd. The Waverly, The Penn, and the Flora are no longer standing. Mr. Ryburn sold the apartments to his son Alexander in 1931. In 1947 the carriage house in the back was remodeled into two apartments. In the 1950's the building became known as the Tangelo and there are three tangelo trees on the property. The Tangelo is the first apartment building to be placed on the National Register of Historic Places. Current apartment owners, Garrett and Stephanie Puzzo have restored the building back to its originally glory and today it was open for $6 tours in an event benefitting the Indian River Historical society. It was a lot of fun exploring the apartments. They are very small, but charming with arched doorways, built in shelves, and the original tubs. Most of the floors are original too as are the steel doorknobs and brass window cranks. In the center of the building is an eight foot by eight foot atrium letting in light and channeling rainwater from the roof. There was also art for sale in each room. When the building was constructed, apartments rented for $60 a month. Now most of the apartments have already been rented for between $1,400 and $1,800 a month. The upstairs apartment are larger with an additional corner room and balcony. The Tangelo Apartments in Vero Beach has been named the most haunted location on the Treasure Coast by the Florida Bureau of Paranormal Investigations. During investigations they have encountered a little girl. After the day time apartment tours finishes, Indian River Hauntings conducted a paranormal investigation open to the public for an $11 donation to the Indian River Historical Society.
