The post office was designed by Louis A. Simon in a Mission Revival style. In addition to serving as a post office, the building also held civic functions for the town. On February 11, 2092 it was added to the U.S. National Register of Historic Places. The post office closed in 2001 in order to push traffic towards two newer locations. Fort Pierce purchased the property from the U.S. Postal Service in 2002. The city was looking for someone to operate a business in the building in keeping with their Orange Avenue plan which requires new businesses that open to support museums, art, culture, or music. In 2017, Ft. Pierce sold the Post Office for $139,000 to Fort Pierce residents who planned to capitalize off the Fort Pierce market and use the building to turn it into a 5 day a week local goods market inside. Construction of the market was supposed to have begun in the summer of 2017. The city turned down other offers from people who didn't have a concrete development plan. So far nothing has been done and the building remains empty.

So, after finishing at the Manatee Center we made the mandatory pilgrimage across the parking lot in search of more travel literature. As visitor centers go, this one was clean, bright and staffed by a couple of very pleasant and helpful ladies. It was a bit light in the area of available travel related literature. Still worth the stop.

A new bright star has opened on the Treasure Coast!…read more A beautiful historic building, built in 1909 and stunning from the outside. Open the door and you are transported back in time to a beautifully decorated parlor room with small booths and tables. The chef has carefully crafted a wonderful menu. We had 3 appetizers and 1 entree and shared a dessert. The soup de jour was a Tomato Purée, which was very good, the Cheddar Bacon Biscuits were delicious and the Truffle Caviar Deviled Eggs were amazing. Our entree was a 10 oz Wagyu Sirloin which was good, though a little tasteless. And the Crème Brûlée was outstanding. Service was excellent, prices are reasonable and the experience was fabulous. Upstairs there is a fabulous "Speak Easy" and the is also outside seating and a bar. If you are local, this will become your new favorite restaurant and if you are visiting the Treasure Coast, this is a must visit restaurant. I highly recommend The Boston House as the #1 restaurant in Ft Pierce

My wallet was recently taken, so I only had photos of my driver's license and passport with me. I completely understand that the restaurant has policies regarding alcohol and that they couldn't accept photos of my IDs. However, when the manager spoke to me about it, she was not apologetic or particularly kind about the situation. A little understanding and better communication would have gone a long way. We were also seated late, and our appetizers took quite a while to come out. The sodas were also extremely watered down. The furniture didn't feel particularly sturdy or comfortable either--the booth kept shaking, and whenever the person sitting behind me leaned back, it would push into my back. Honestly, these things may not have bothered me as much if the situation with the manager had been handled with more kindness. Gaby was wonderful, and the steak was great. The sides were just okay. Unfortunately, the overall experience, especially the manager's approach, left a negative impression.

The three story building was designed in the Masonary Vernacular Art Modern style by architect W.H. Garns and built between 1926 and 1937 by James T. Vocelle with money he received from the Public Works Administration to build a courthouse for the newly formed county. In later years the courthouse became too small for the growing community and the court moved to a new building. On July 19, 1999 the courthouse was added to the National Register of Historic Places. Today the building has a 2,400 square foot banquet hall on the second floor that can be rented for weddings and receptions, lectures, seminars, business meetings, fundraisers, and parties. There are some sculptures in front of the building but my favorite feature is the classical cherub light poles in the front.

In 2000 the St. Lucie Chamber of Commerce opened the house as a visitor's center providing information about things to do in the area and places to stay and eat at. Annie Hogg, who was from Scottish royalty, managed the family business while her husband, Captain Hogg, sailed along the coast of Florida and to the West Indies, trading goods along the way. The Hogg family's trading post provided essential goods for pioneers while fostering connections. Eventually they decided to sell the trading post to an oyster cannery company. Peter Cobb was an employee of the oyster cannery and when they wanted to sell the building he purchased it. He turned the trading post into a general store and it opened in 1896. Peter Cobb operated it until 1931. The store offered what they community needed and was an important gathering spot. The stores motto was Everything to Eat, Wear, and Use. Today on the first floor of the building is Old Florida Coffee Company, a micro roaster. They kept the historic integrity of the building and I am sure the building's former residents would be pleased to know it is still a community gathering spot. On the second floor is the Budd Adams-Cobb Cultural Center which preserves the history of the building and Ft. Pierce. Bud Adams is Mr. Alto Adams, also known as Bud who made a financial contribution to preserve the P. P. Cobb building. He passed away in 2017 at the age of 91. He was a rancher and an environmentalist. In the center you will find maps, vintage photos, drawing of archeological discoveries, and other materials. There is no admission to enter and it staffed by volunteers. If you find yourself in downtown Ft. Pierce stop by for a cup of coffee and a dose of Treasure Coast history in the P. P. Cobb building. Arthur G. McKee was an early investor in the company and handled the lot sales. Mr. Ryburn purchased lot 8 on July 21,1926 for the construction of an right unit, two story apartment building. The building was designed in the Mission Revival style of architecture. One of the most notable early tenants was Bud Holman who was instrumental in bringing the Dodgers to Vero Beach. The Tangelo is the last remaining of four similarly built apartment from the 1920's along Royal Palm Blvd. The Waverly, The Penn, and the Flora are no longer standing. Mr. Ryburn sold the apartments to his son Alexander in 1931. In 1947 the carriage house in the back was remodeled into two apartments. In the 1950's the building became known as the Tangelo and there are three tangelo trees on the property. The Tangelo is the first apartment building to be placed on the National Register of Historic Places. Current apartment owners, Garrett and Stephanie Puzzo have restored the building back to its originally glory and today it was open for $6 tours in an event benefitting the Indian River Historical society. It was a lot of fun exploring the apartments. They are very small, but charming with arched doorways, built in shelves, and the original tubs. Most of the floors are original too as are the steel doorknobs and brass window cranks. In the center of the building is an eight foot by eight foot atrium letting in light and channeling rainwater from the roof. There was also art for sale in each room. When the building was constructed, apartments rented for $60 a month. Now most of the apartments have already been rented for between $1,400 and $1,800 a month. The upstairs apartment are larger with an additional corner room and balcony. The Tangelo Apartments in Vero Beach has been named the most haunted location on the Treasure Coast by the Florida Bureau of Paranormal Investigations. During investigations they have encountered a little girl. After the day time apartment tours finishes, Indian River Hauntings conducted a paranormal investigation open to the public for an $11 donation to the Indian River Historical Society.
