Really friendly staff (as we have noticed everywhere in Prague so far) and not super touristy. It's a chain restaurant, but a Czech chain and a nice one. Good mix of traditional Czech foods, but also a few more modern options. PLENTY of food for the price. I got the goulash stew (which came in a mug with a bug soft pretzel on top and warmed by chilled soul - since I per usual didn't pack a warm enough jacket for the trip...aside: bring a warm jacket if you're traveling to Europe before May...I never learn). The stew was a bit salty for my taste, but very hearty and good. Then I got the baked salmon salad because I NEEDED some veggies in my life. It was super fresh, well dressed, and the salmon was cooked nicely too. My brother's goulash looked good, had some latke-esque potato pancakes and he ate it all. I didn't try it personally, but he said it was good. My dad got the bohemian platter and it was HUGE. Def meant for 2-3 people, and not just one. It had a while duck, sausage of multiple kinds, gnocchi, two kinds of dumplings, two kinds of kraut, and I'm probably missing more. Everything was really good but don't order this for one person. Would recommend for a real Czech experience (even our tour guide had never heard of it). PLUS it's right next to the Kafka statue which is cool and makes it easy to find.

I ordered the poached egg and avocado spread on bread with smoked salmon. And things totally went downhill from there... At first glance the plate looked nothing like an earlier photo from just a few months ago. Hidden under the rustic sweet potato shreds was one really sad dish. The Letdown: On bread slice was a tiny spread that barely tasted like avocado. From there, I found the "poached" egg was overboiled, and one of the pear slices was actually rotten. It boggled my mind that this could be served. The shreds of smoked salmon looked like leftovers, and was that an old slice of lemon that topped it? If those weren't enough, the bottom of the bread was seriously burnt. Almost comical how every element of the dish was poorly prepared. Yes, I should've returned this to the kitchen. But I was reminded of the misgivings in Kitchen Confidential. On a side note: there is rarely complimentary water in Europe and it was not the case here either contrary to earlier reviews.

Environment: The most unique part of this restaurant is that it is a rare cubist design, which has a modern and sleek appearance. The interior is very clean with bright natural light. It was actually not that busy when I went for brunch despite the location between the Old Town Square and Powder Gate. Service: The staff are friendly and attentive. The service speed was also pretty quick. Overall, I had a very pleasant experience dining at the Grand Cafe Orient, with good brunch food and a nice environment. Things to watch for: 1) The WiFi is spotty. 2) They are cash only. They ATM is also spotty. There were some folks excitedly watching the World Cup, so it seemed like it had a good sports bar vibe.
