Loved it! As an adventurous solo traveller, this was a perfect choice. As promised, the jazz / blues trio, The Jakub Zomer Trio, was excellent. They were a Les Paul-Hammond organ sound with a savagely good drummer. They gave it all they had, all night, not phoning in a single number. lt always surprises me that so few Americans know of the long-standing excellence of jazz in Eastern Europe.
Escorted by a flotilla of swans, you sail serenely through this endlessly magical city as if on Cleopatra's barge, as the castles and fairy-tale towers of this fever dream of a city go on forever, like the Moldau down which you are gliding.
I had the salmon, with dauphinoise potatoes. It was sublime-- the salmon was cooked just to the minute of translucency, and the potatoes were like a Dobosh torte of taters, cheese and cream. I asked to substitute the venison pate' for the spring rolls, and it was not a problem. The spring rolls looked a little Panda Express to me.
The Pilsener with which I washed it down was, of course, the best in the world. I would recommend drinking nothing but beer here, oenophile that I am. It's bright, crisp, refreshing, and so smooth. Kind of lemony and crunchy...oh! What a beer.
Luckily, my tablemates were a friendly couple from exotic Florida, veterans of many cruises and adept at balancing company and space. The music is relatively loud, and breaks are short, so there's no long, awkward silence to fill. I chose a seat at the six-top in the bow, gambling on the lesser likelihood of being a third wheel at a small table with a couple. Most of the other passengers were British.
It ended at 11, and I was loathe to spoil my reverie with a jolting tram ride. Fortunately, there is a cab stand at the top of the stairs, or you can venture across the street to the Intercontinental to find a taxi.
Every time I remember Prague I wonder if I dreamed it, every time I return I wonder how I ever disbelieved the sheer extent of its miles of unconquerable Bohemian beauty, its ancient roots, its centuries of dignified resistance, its homey abundance of beer and sausage enrobed in some of the most elevated architecture and decor you will ever see.
The Jazz Boat embraces that quintessential Czech combination of elegance and authenticity, with great music, yummy food, and pleasant company surrounded by the Golden City.
