A bit touristy but very nice design and I had a great experience here. Food: Croque Madame (249 CZK) was very tasty- cheese was nicely melted and I especially liked the creamy sauce on top. Boost Smoothie (99 CZK) was decent, although more like a juice and slightly small portion size. Raspberry Cake (199 CZK) for dessert was great with a chocolate shell on the bottom and raspberry flavored top swirl. Environment: The most unique part of this restaurant is that it is a rare cubist design, which has a modern and sleek appearance. The interior is very clean with bright natural light. It was actually not that busy when I went for brunch despite the location between the Old Town Square and Powder Gate. Service: The staff are friendly and attentive. The service speed was also pretty quick. Overall, I had a very pleasant experience dining at the Grand Cafe Orient, with good brunch food and a nice environment. I chose this cafe' for its history: Kafka drank his coffee here. I was gratified to find a beautiful Art Deco ambiance and a delicious seasonal speciality: quince crepes. They were worth the walk! If you are looking for something savory try the French omelette made with ham, cheese, and heavy cream, simple but beautifully presented with fresh greens and tomato. The spot is cute and conveniently located near the old square. The cheese omelet was also pretty good - light and fluffy with multiple types of gooey cheese, a bit buttery. However, the service here is painfully slow. It took a long time to get the menu, to order, to get our food, and to pay. We ended up being there for about an hour, which is excessively long for one omelet, a slice of cake, and a tea. Additionally, when we went, we were one of only three tables and there were about 4 servers. The servers seemed more interested in talking to each other than in helping. Main reason to go here is for the decor and decent balcony view. read more

Cafe Grand Orient is the Cafe associated with the House of the Black Madonna - the official museum of Czech cubism. That museum is well worth visiting on its own. The artwork is magnificent. How is the Cafe? From the Standpoint of Food - Three Stars. Standard Cafe fare. From the Standpoint of Decor - Four Stars. The ground floor outside cafe is no great shakes - but if you go up to the first floor it is decorated in Art Deco and is really pretty. From the Standpoint of Eastern or Phenomenological Philosophy - Nine Hundred and Two Stars. Cubism is as much a philosophical movement as an artistic convention. All of the art is about objects and light as both substantial and insubstantial and about all phenomena as permanent and ever changing. The Czechs got this more than just about anyone else - and this shows up in everything in the House of the Black Madonna. So if you have some sort of philosophical outlook that can deconstruct things or a mystic practice that sees through superficial manifestations to perceive transcendental essences - you will have the time of your life doing what you do at the Grand Cafe Orient. Location location location and big beautiful windows with lots of light ...that's what this place has going for it . I have to be upfront and say that cigarette smoke REALLY bothers me. My chest tightens, my eyes water and I hate the smell . Much like a lot of Europe I guess still, they allow smoking. Actually there 4 tables just as you walk in that are non smoking but it's just ridiculous as they abut all the smoking tables so it's defining as though you are trapped in a room with heavy smokers . We won't go back for that reason only ....and the fact that the snobby attitude of the servers but honestly I tried to rate stars based on food and location only however the smoke issue kept bringing it back down. I had the warm baguette with ham, mozzarella, and pesto ...I thought it was delicious. One other has the goat cheese salad and another the cold caprese baguette and they said it was just ok. We won't be back because of the smoke but the room is cool and with the big windows, there is light flooding in and views of the city belief you. read more

A sweet and historical spot just off the main square in Old Town Prague...it really cannot be beat. Just a few meters past the Astronomical Clock, the Black Madonna (a cubist architectural highlight) hosts this sweet café on the first floor. The room is well adorned with spacious seating and tables, plus plenty of options on the terrace that surrounds the building. A well curated menu of drinks, light bites, brunch, pastry, salads, and sandwiches makes this an ideal stopping point for any time of day. Three of us got milkshakes (banana, raspberry, and pistachio) and all of us were thrilled. The salads were fresh and delicious, and our dining friends had sandwiches that were equally enjoyable. I plan to bring many friends and family here when we take them to Prague in the not too distant future! read more

Got the venecek which was square shaped as the building is famous for its cubism architecture and some tea. Great service until it was time to pay. We were never told that they did not accept credit/debit cards, forcing us to pay in Euros not the czech currency as we didn't have any. We had no issue paying with cards anywhere else in Prague so not sure why this cafe doesn't accept them. Read about this place and wanted to give it a try. Stumbled upon it by accident so of course I had to try it out. First impression was I loved the area, the cubism decor inside, the big windows letting in all the sunshine. Staff was nice, quick and accommodating. Only thing about this place was that they don't accept card. Make sure you bring cash or you're in for a not nice surprise. My friend and I both got lattes here, they were average I would say. I saw a bunch of food, it all did look good but for the same price you can walk a few minutes away and get the same crepes, breakfast plates and sandwiches for less. To me this place was more about going for the location, decor and ambiance then for the quality Of the stuff they had on offer. Beautiful setting in a great location but the experience for me was diminished by poor service and a waiter who took advantage of the cash only policy to short change an American tourist. Double count your change, here is how he did it to me. Unlike everyone else we met in Prague, the waiter either pretended, or actually did not speak any English. Then when we were done he was ignoring our table again so I had to go to the bar to pay. He worked his touch screen and pointed to a number, he did not present a proper receipt. But we were splitting the bill so I had already added it up, and the amount pointed to was right. I gave him a single large bill, he then counted out a handful of change and some bills that looked like it was close enough to not be a jerk tourist and count up all the coin. It's the Coins that will trip you up until you really know them. A 10kr is tiny and seems worthless by size, but is 10kr, 2kr are bigger, 1kr in between, 20kr are golden and much larger and heavier. In my case on day one of our trip the coins were full of 1kr. Lesson learned. Count your change. Now It's true that a 100kr short change is less than $5.00 US, but it shouldn't happen. read more

A very cool cafe with interesting Art Deco interior that has, in my opinion, not much to do with Orient as the name suggests. It is a spacious cafe that serves nice coffee and small meals. I really like to come here in the summer when it is possible to sit on the balcony and watch people passing by. It is also a great place for a coffee or wine with friends. Since it's location is very central, it is often visited by tourists and can get a bit busy but otherwise the atmosphere is very relaxed. The service is sometimes a bit slow and the waiters are not very friendly but in general the level is ok. read more

Whenever I'm in Prague, I make it a point to go here. At least once. Housed above the beautiful Cubist Museum in the famed 'House of the Black Madonna', this landmark cafe has a very interesting history that is fortunately printed on their menu in full. In short, it was designed by the architect from the ground up (even the light fixtures) and while sitting in it's classic wooden booths or on it's private balcony, you can almost imagine it as it once was. Nostalgia aside, this cafe is absolutely beautiful and a fine example of Cubism. There are almost always seats free, thanks to it being a bit hard to find for the average tourist, but if you want one of the luxurious benches or private-only-for-2-tables outside, you might need to wait. The food is very good, although recommended for breakfast or lighter eaters. A wide selection of pancakes (from sweet to meat) are available, as well as assorted sandwiches and breakfast spreads. The Turkish Coffee is absolutely delicious. No matter what you order, and if you at all ever enjoyed sweets, make sure you order the Chocolat Fondant, which must be Czech for 'most delicious thing ever'. A slice of the richest chocolate heaven covered in Marzipan with a side of whipped cream and stewed plums. It's worth it to come in for a coffee and this alone. read more

This place looks quite special and is worth visiting at least once to feel the atmosphere of the first half of the 20th century. It is located next to the museum of Czech cubism and properly decorated responding to the spirit of those days. They have a nice choice of drinks including variations of coffee, usual offer of tea and hot milk. The pancakes and desserts are pretty tasty, too. The place is of average size and usually full, so be ready to wait for a table (especially with a bigger group). The waiters aren't really smiley, the service can be slow and sometimes they unfortunately look like they are making you a favour by actually serving you. However, some years ago in Czech Republic such an attitude to the customers was much more common than now, so don't let it get you into a bad mood - in general, this cafe isn't bad. read more

I felt like I stepped back into 1910's at this cafe. We stopped by this place along our walking tour route to grab something to drink and sweets to munch on.
