Last meet up with Cbear. She wanted to go for a drink and picked Typhoon Lounge in trendy Monkland. We dropped in on a Sunday afternoon and sat outside on their terrasse. The weather was beautiful for a bit but then turned a complete 180. Huge rainstorm so we had to run inside to keep dry. The menu is small and generic; appetizers, burgers, house plates, salads and desserts. They had a few daily specials. Tuesday tequila and tacos ($3.00) sounds like a fun night. - Berry breeze sangria ($29.00 pitcher) - raspberry vodka, strawberry nectar, grapefruit, cranberry, orange, berries & lemon and red wine. Went here for drinks with family. This place gives me a local vibe, which I love. It isn't pretentious, just gives out good drinks and service. The staff was friendly and attentive and I enjoyed my time there. I didn't have any food, so I can't say anything about, but my friend enjoyed their dumplings. read more

Would not recommend this place. We were excited to celebrate Australia Day at the event they had planned and my friends and I, as Australians were treated really rudely. The drinks were an hour late and the place wasn't that busy. the second round of drinks also took a while and the drinks we ordered were drinks that should take 30 seconds to make. the food was also slow but faster than the drinks lol and the service was bad. After we finished 3 out of the 4 of us gave them a good tip, which honestly we don't think they deserve a tip. After we tipped them one of the staff members came up to us and confronted us saying that one of us didn't tip and that we all have to tip, it's a requirement to tip over 20% she said (which is a lie, in Canada you are not required to tip and can tip what ever you want ). Honestly I think that is soo disrespectful to ask someone to tip after poor service and after the 3/4 people in the group gave them a kind tip. So clearly they aren't good at customer service. after we walked out the boss came up to us, asking the person who didn't tip to tip. which was very rude and if he is asking us to tip maybe he should pay his staff better. read more

I love Typhoon Lounge, a dive bar kind with great food in the NDG area. If you are not from the area- it's not as accessible by walk except by bus or car. This place gets busy pretty quickly on Fridays. I had a Guiness with some good old honey garlic chicken wings (these were huge wings and well seasoned too, I couldn't finish them all on my own so filling!) with a side of sweet potato fries (so good!). The service was kind of off because of a busy night- but when we did call the server, he was quick to take our orders. read more

I went to Typhoon Lounge a few weeks ago for my ten year high school reunion. Now that I've dated myself, I'll get on with this ;). The bar/lounge is deceptively large considering the apparently small footprint from the outside. The indoor area has room for at least 20-30 people seated, and probably 50-75 people standing. The outdoor patio is in the front, around the entrance. The bar is pretty long, and easily accommodated a large number of our group. I went for the Garden Wrap for a vegetarian option (I was glad they had at least one or two vegetarian options, but not a great selection). Already overpriced at $15, I opted for the additional $3 to upgrade the fries for the sweet potato variant. I was not impressed. The fries were soggy and flavourless, and the wrap was just uninspiring. It wasn't awful, I just expect a much higher calibre for the price I was paying. One thing I found quite interesting and endearing is the plastic mesh guard in the men's room urinal. Bear with me, I know we're in "weird" territory here. It's cute because it's a hockey net! I rather enjoyed the feeling of scoring the winning goal :P. Overall, Typhoon Lounge is a perfectly adequate venue, but I probably won't be coming back simply because it's not really my scene, and the food was overpriced and disappointing to me. Typhoon Lounge is one of those places that has become a staple of NDG in Montreal. If you're looking for a good local bar without having to go all the way downtown, Typhoon will do. They have an interesting drink menu that isn't too highly priced and they do serve a selection of burgers and poutine that hit the spot when those late night munchies kick in. In the summer, their patio is usually full and you get a great view of Monkland village ambiance which I love. It's walking distance from Villa Maria Metro Station and plenty of Ubers in the area if you live a bit further away and need a ride home. I've been coming to Typhoon since I moved to Montreal in 2007 and have seen it change from a complete dive student bar to a cleaner, slightly more upscale place. The student ambiance is completely gone now though, not that I'm complaining. read more

Where do I start? Perhaps by saying that I can't figure out how to put negative stars on yelp so I'll settle for 1. I and my wife were regulars. We would go at least once a week and enjoyed the atmosphere and the location. A a few weeks back we ordered, as we often do, the spinach deep plate. From some reason, there were no more than a handful of chips and 5 (count them) 5 pita wedges. We could not find our waiter, so I called over another waitress and explained that the plate is nearly empty. All she had to do is simply go back to the kitchen and add some more of these chips or pita. Instead , with a very negative attidue, suggested that 'sorry, we cant do that, and we cant take the plate back'. I pointed out that the plate is nearly empty. She repeated she cannot do anything. I said, 'ok, this isnt going anywhere, let me speak with our own waiter' . Our waiter was a nice and understanding person who took the plate back to the kitchen to add more chips and maybe, just maybe if we are lucky enough some more pita wedges. Surprisigly, storming back to our table came what seems to be the 'manager?' of the place. He placed the plate back on our table and said that we were rude with the waitress and why would we ask for more chips or pita if we havent eaten them yet and cant tell if we may need more. I told him, honestly, I have never had to argue at a place where the plate had small portions and why is this turning to an argument. At one point I questions if I would have to go to Provigo nearby and perhaps bring my own? what the big deal? just add chips? This is where the 'Manager', directly insulted me and my wife and asked if we would like the dip in a bag when we go to providgo and get chips. I told them he crossed the line, really was offensive and this was really not necessary or acceptable. No, no cursing, no bad words, no insults. Just walked away never to return. Aftermath: I tried to reach the owner who I guess is too busy for small issues with meaningless clients. Its a shame. read more

Despite living very close I hadn't had a chance to try Typhoon until yesterday. I had the Bullseye burger with the thai dumplings on the side. The burger was really good. Perfect size. A wee-bit over done, so if you're picky about that make sure to order under your preference (as in, if you like it medium-well, order medium-rare). The dumplings were good, but not as good as an authentic asian restaurant. good but overrated. I have one note to end with, while being served I noticed the waitress seemed uncomfortable in her dress, she had her arms crossed to block her cleavage. I was wondering why she was wearing a dress that she was uncomfortable in and realized that every woman working in the restaurant was wearing the same tight dress that JUST covered the butt, was skin tight and showed a lot of cleavage. I find this quite distasteful. Its one thing to have a uniform or to ask servers to wear a certain color, it's very much another to stick women into teeny tiny dresses. If the point was to have attactive women serve their customers, here's a newsflash: women can be attractive and not have to be hanging out of their dresses and have the body language of someone who feels exposed. If I wanted to see women in embarrassing outfits, I would eat at Hooter's. note: my waitress was great. read more

we enjoyed the food & overall experience, but the next day we saw on our cc statement that the waitress (Allison) doubled her tip when she put the transaction through (we had already given her a very generous tip)... SO BEWARE people, i had heard about this place before that the waitresses keep the extra change, but didn't think they would dare to do the same with credit cards... double-check your bills and count your change! it's a shame cause the food was actually good. I would have gone back if this had not happened, but I will never go back and will not recommend this place just because of some the dishonest staff! read more

Great place to stop in and have a drink as well as some appetizers. I personally just finished eating when we got to Typhoon, so I didn't get a chance to try their food. The decor is lounge oriented and modern. Service was excellent with very nice looking ladies that we're smiling the whole time serving drinks. Monkland Burger - that's all you really need to know. This place is a bit pricey and the service is slow, but it has an amazing atmosphere, great food and tons of drinks. Perfect for a date, evening business meeting, or just to go with friends. read more

Used to frequent on Sundays for trivia nights but it seems that they are no more. They still have Whisky & Wings Wednesdays and have great food. I've brought a number of couchsurfers here and they always seem to enjoy themselves. Great decor. read more

Went to typhoon for the first time on Thursday night around 10:30 with friends. We sat on the patio outside and ordered a classic sangria pitcher to share. I was definitely not impressed by their sangria, tasted more like peach schnapps than anything else. I also ordered the burger because I hadn't eaten dinner. I had the goat cheese and avocado burger with fries (15$) and everything about it was delicious. Would definitely go back to try more food and I would recommend their burgers, but not their sangria (unless of course you secretelt like peach schnapps- in that case go for it) read more

Food is surprisingly good for a bar! Well worth it. When I first moved to the neighbourhood I went almost every night for dinner...casual atmosphere, nice bar. Don't get there too late on the weekend if you are eating as it turns into more of a nightclub type hangout, which is also cool, but different than the dinner spot you think you are heading to! It's kind of tucked away in the basement, you see it off the street, but need to look for it. read more

A bit pricey but it's on Monkland so that's to be expected - the food is nothing to go for but I suppose if you're really hungry and you don't mind being overcharged for very simple food, go for it. This place has some high and low points for me. The high points are lots of outdoor and indoor seating , great place to grab some drinks and sit outside in the summer and enjoy the great neighbourhood vibe of monkland ave. The drinks are pretty good , they have a lot of choice and often have specials. The prices are also reasonable for the most part. The food is not bad , it's mainly your typical bar foods like burgers , salads , sandwiches , poutine etc So nothing really bad to say about the food but nothing to write home about either, so when I do come here it's usually for drinks. While the service is usually friendly it is always very verryyyy slow. It usually takes a long time for someone to come take the order , then again to bring it out and they usually don't come check in very often to see if we want anything else , which is sort of a loss for them because without all that wait time people would be more inclined to order more drinks or food. It actually takes a long time to get the bill also. Once I waited almost 45 minutes for my bill and I reminded the waitress multiple times during that timeframe (it wasn't even a busy night), I ended up going inside right to the bar to ask them if I can please just pay my bill. and I have been told this has happened to other friends of mine as well. That being said this is still a fun place to go and does have its positives. I would definitely not discourage anyone from coming here (unless they're in a rush lol) and I will likely be going back myself at some point or another , so this 3stars isn't because I've had bad experiences here , it's more based on the very slow and sort of inattentive service that could be improved on and the fact that the the food while not bad , doesn't have anything really standout about it. so it is still a tad overpriced for my taste considering it is mainly burgers and sandwiches etc. But still won't break the bank or anything like that- it's just a matter of opinion. read more

They've got some great staff, and you should definitely sit at Kristy bar when she's working. The burgers are always good. The Monkland is my fav! They have a great cocktail list, from raspberry mint lemonade and mojitos with pretty much any fruit you'd like. Over all a great NDG hang out! read more

I am posting here to complain about the TERRIBLE managing service and not to mention the terrible service by a waitress named Hollie who could not keep track of a simple table of 5 people, which 2 were on one bill, so 4 bills in total. **These waitresses are also known to go back into the terminal machines and hike up their tip by an extra %15 when you pay by credit card. KEEP YOUR RECEIPT!** I was brought my bill (mine and my friends combined together). The total was just under $104. We noticed there was a shot charged that was not ours and said so to Hollie. She realized her mistake, apologized and said she would go fix it right away. (Thanks for the deceive of great customer service). She brings the bill back, in a black folder and starts walking away. We open the bill, expecting something under $100 since the error shot was supposed to be taken off, right? Our new total was: $122.36. EXCUSE ME? We called her back and she began saying how she messed up and didn't combine the proper bills. FIRST, that is not my problem as a client, you as a waitress, which is your job, should know better in keeping track of your clients, SECOND, fine, youre human, mistakes happen, HOWEVER; when you gave the new bill, you should have explained why it would be higher and not scurried away like a dog that knows it did something wrong and then try to ARGUE with us when we ask to speak to the manager. She agreed to get the manager BUT did not come back with him/her. She came back with the bills all separated to what? Try to rub in our faces how you can't keep track of your bills? GET REAL, CHICK. I asked to see the manager not for you to keep arguing with me. The manager came, TERRIBLE, TERRIBLE CUSTOMER SERVICE if I may say so, he began arguing with us how we have to pay the bill, etc, etc. Then offered a round of shots. Your free round of shots would equal that extra $25 so get serious "manager" and let the client be right in wanting to pay the original bill of under $104 minus an extra shot. He kept arguing and I shot at him "OK, what if I paid the $104, left and then this Hollie realizes she has an extra open, UNPAID, bill at the end of the night. What now? You void it or make her pay out of her own pocket?" What did he do? Chocked, exactly, I would too. CUSTOMER IS RIGHT. Now STFU, apologize and move on win your evening. No, he kept arguing with us, after being proven wrong, so we paid our bill but it was the FIRST time I never tipped a waitress and I would have rather given her a tip and not a penny to this "manager". I rated them a two because the drinks are amazing, food is great and specials are awesome. BUT SERVICE= BARF, terrible. At least with Hollie and this so called "manager". read more

We're outside for the street festival here on Monkland and stopped in to try their BBQ. I have to say at $9 for a 1/4 of corn, and a spoon of slaw and potatoe salad accompanying a poorly cooked burger on a cheap ol bun is not worth it..and kind of disappointing. We also tried the turkey taco which was a bit better but a bit dry (one taco...). Also their beers were $7 for standard draft...at 12 Oz. So nothing to see here, come back for their normal fare and normal prices, they haven't got their BBQ legs yet. read more

UPDATE: It turns out that this place has old credit card machines which slow down the processing of credit cards. After a week, my credit card statement is now correct and apparently they have updated their machines this week so this should no longer be an issue. I had heard that there were sometimes issues with waitresses stealing/adding tips to the bill, but figured I would give the place a chance. We went for dinner last night and had a great time, but I just checked my credit card online and see that the waitress (Sasha) not only didn't void the transaction that was entered incorrectly (for a lower amount which I pointed out to her so she wouldn't be on the hook for the remaining amount), but charged that voided amount with an added tip AND added an extra tip for herself to the "real" bill. I have contacted the restaurant and hope to get it sorted, but you MUST pay attention to your bill, pay in cash AND keep receipts just in case. It's too bad as it's a fun place. :-( read more

The atmosphere is nice and the service is mediocre at best (had to ask multiple times for the same drink orders and it wasn't busy). It's a decent option to go for a group because it is large but there are two things that really detract from the overall experience (A) beer is way overpriced, but more importantly (B) they water down their liquor shots. Went for 'Whiskey Wednesday' got four shots of whiskey for 20$, meanwhile the shots were very watered down by ~30%. Bottom line, Typhoon is a venue with the potential to be somewhere I would frequent but with overpriced drinks and watered down whiskey, let's be honest no one with any self-respect would put up with that disrespect. read more

Really great burgers here!! A very relaxed, laid back kinda place. It's in the basement so fairly dark which actually adds to the atmosphere. A great place to unwind and meet up for a couple drinks for those that aren't looking for something too fancy. read more

My first time at typhoon lounge and also the last time. I ordered a rusty nail. The waitress didn't know what that was. No problem I explained 1 shot of black label and 1 shot of drambuie. Now any idiot would know that the colour should be a golden colour not the same as water which is what my drink mostly consisted of. I have been enjoying this drink for a lot of years so i am not easily fooled. Shame on you for treating your patrons in that way. read more

Cool bar. However, there is a group of regulars that always comes in and causes ruckus. They sneak in their own alcohol and make a fuss about the bill. Also, they always yell out stupid requests at the DJ and use cheap pick-up lines on the patrons. In addition, there's C-Block that always prevents any male/female interaction. Be careful if the bartenders offer you shots, they will appear on your bill. Overall great place! Would recommend. read more

Hubby and I each ordered a burger (monsoon and monkland) and were very happy with the deliciousness of the meal. The burger was smaller than I was expecting (bun is about 2/3 the size of a grocery store hamburger bun), but the serving of fries is generous so we were both happily full. That being said, $15 is a bit high for a burger and fries, and there was nothing really exceptional about anything here (service, ambiance, location, etc) to warrant making this a regular noshing spot for us. read more
