A short jaunt from Savannah and worth a day trip. I actually stayed on the island on my last visit to the area, and it was the right choice for me that time. Fairly walkable (once you GET TO the island), cute restaurants and bars, touristy shops, and a nice long strip of pretty clean beachfront. A museum and a lighthouse to visit as well. Fresh seafood to eat at pretty much every restaurant. I loved my initial afternoon visit to the island, but I was enchanted by my weeklong stay on Tybee. It was beautiful and relaxing and I am glad I opted to stay on the island and travel in to the city as I wanted rather than the other way around. Though both have their plus sides! read more

Tybee.... Forever a joy. If you don't like Tybee or the people here it's likely because this is a quaint, somewhat sleepy, small beach town. The people here respect the dunes and the wildlife, don't care for litter or have time to bother with whatever attitude you bring. We had an enjoyable and relaxing stay on island. We came for 4 nights in May. We stayed at the Hotel Tybee. It was conveniently located with a parking lot, 2 pools, and tiki bar. It was a very short walk across the boardwalk to the beach (the hotel provided beach towels and beach chairs in each room). Our room was large with a king sized bed and ocean view. We got to drive around. Visited the marine aquarium, and several other key points. We watched the sunrise. We walked the south beach and collected some shells along the water's edge. We visited several shops including the Sugar Shack for our candy needs. We took the Tybee Island Historical Tour -- and learned about the history of life on the island and how Fort Scrieven has played such a large part of the island, especially the north end. We saw many of the former officers' quarters and other buildings now being used as both residences, rentals, and businesses. We dined out every day for lunch and dinner and enjoyed lots of seafood. Our favorite dinner restaurants on island turned out to be Pier 16 and Stingrays. Most everyone was friendly. The island is very easy to navigate. We had loaded the parking app, but only needed to use it a few times. In some cases, we were able to walk from our hotel to breakfast and a couple other meals. Why isn't fishing limited to certain beaches? We were on the beach, and suddenly everyone around us was fishing within 6 feet of us. We had to walk a block away to go in the water. Ridiculous and rude. read more

I was on a Tour that included a one hour stop at Tybee Beach. The Tybee Island Pier and Pavilion was not impressive. Its old. Mostly T-shirts shops and Bars. Beach was ok but if you're a New Englander or Florida (Siesta Beach) it is just on the OK scale. read more

Tybee Island was ok. The water and beach wasn't what I'm used to compared to the NC beaches. The town is a typical tourist destination. We loved the convenience of driving our golf cart to most places. read more

My husband and I went to Tybee island leaving from Hilton Head. Tybee is completely run down and looks like back in time. It was totally a waste of time and took us out of the way driving back home to Saint Augustine, FL. Don't waste your time on the visit. My husband and I drove around for about 30 mins and were out of there. lol There were parking meters everywhere and nothing was appealing to us, not even the restaurants. :( read more

Loved our first visit to Tybee Island. It was low-key and perfect for us. Bonus: the island had free parking (posted on parking stations) during the time we were there so worries about payment or expired tickets. Winter is my favorite time to visit a beach. Less crowds. More space. More parking spots. And the same amazing ocean views. Shops and places to eat were open, so we had plenty of choice. The weather cooperated. It was sunny, cool and windy. Since writing my original review, Gerald has retired and Coco's was sold for the property. Alternatives would be Pier 16, Fannies on the Beach (best coconut shrimp), and Rock House for excellent burgers & fries. Not to be out done, if you want a HUGE family sized pizza Huc a Poos can't be beat. Bubba Gumbo's is still our favorite. As for Crab Shack, it's all frozen seafood, but fun for the kids to feed the gators and see the parrots. read more

11-19-23 My husband and I came here for two reasons 1. to go to Sundaes as seen on Triple D with Guy Fieri and see the island. His sister is coming for a week in December so we figured it must be terrific. Well it was the opposite as on Sunday's Sundaes is closed as well as the island itself looks pretty shut down in November. As I am from the Jersey Shore this is common after Labor Day. But in South Carolina on a mild Fall day. We parked and walked out on to the beach. I guess no need to pay the meters as there isn't a sole around. Definitely a bit creepy ie scary movies. Once back in the car there was literally no place to go so we drove back off the island. Would I return in season? NO. It looked very tired and run down nothing exciting happening here. read more

Tybee can be hit or miss. But if you prefer more family time then the north beach is where you should be. But for a more social setting the southern part of the beach is where you want to be. read more

Tybee island is a one and done. It is very old rundown. It has passes time. It's just like Myrtle Beach is a dying island. If you walk most of the neighborhoods on Tybee Island there are no sidewalks and the traffic is very bad. Walking your dog is very risky. The restaurants on the island are pouring quality and filthy. You cannot park anywhere on the island without paying four $4 an hour + $.80 processing fee. This is outrageous and basically robbery. I love to know where the money is going. If anybody is looking for a nice vacation, I would highly recommend you bypass Tybee Island. Is that worth the visit?!! read more

The North end of Tybee Island beach was quiet and mostly deserted during our mid-September girl's trip. Tybee is a typical Atlantic side beach. It does not have white sugar sand nor turquoise blue water like the Gulf but it is beautiful in its own way. The beach is gently sloping so fabulous for walking along the surf and great for shelling. I found conch, welks, tons of horseshoe crabs, a perfect sand dollar and an excessive amount of starfish. A true shell lovers paradise. read more

Stayed off Silver Ave- so within walking distance of beach! Weather was perfect! Had some late evening storms, but those were also nice & relaxing! Beaches were kept very nice. No lifeguards at the lifeguard station, but they patrolled via ATV consistently. Not overly crowded, which is another plus. Was generally unimpressed by restaurants, but that was ok for me since I was prepared to eat in my rental. read more

Had a nice time here on a weekday in April. The pier and beach were pretty quiet when we visited, which was nice. I enjoyed visiting the little shops and got a really nice light blue sweatshirt. They have Hershey's ice cream here!!! You know I had to stop! Hershey's is my favorite. We got some really good pictures here as well. Very nice place to visit. read more

Tourist trap all the way. We've traveled a lot, and this island was our worst experience. Don't trust restaurant reviews, and the "wonderful" boat cruises are nothing more that circling the bay once or twice. I'm glad we brought immodium. Tybee used to be a quaint Island, charming, peaceful. And Clean. Now, over time, someone turned it into the Gatlinburg of Islands. Traffic. More lanes and more lanes bringing more traffic there. Feeding the monster they created. Its all about money extraction. Brought to you by your friends from "Dowe Rip them & How" The Pier, which used to be ok, today is a mess. Old boards, patchwork of plywood repairs, loose boards, popped screws and most of all, BIRD POOP EVERY-WHICH WAY. We were sitting or trying to sit, at the entrance area, and while were were searching for a clean place to sit, which was impossible, birds (doves) were pooping on the tables. There is board poop literally on every surface. And everything is just nasty. To the people in charge oof the Pier in Tybee - go up to Charleston and take a good look. Clean tables made of recycled plastic, easy to maintain, easy to clean, boards that are actually walkable and well maintained and bolted down one would expect for an area visited by thousands every year. On the far end of the pier, the guys fishing, use the benches to store their bait and other things, putting their "juices" over the few benches that are there. So you cant sit on those without getting nasty either. Charleston has areas for the people fishing, to put their stuff, so they dont mess up other stuff. And they have patrols out there to check on things. Keep stupid people straight. Tybee is still a beautiful spot, dont get me wrong. And part of why it is loosing what it was is due to the people in charge, and some of the people that come there. People that are dumb enough to find a beautiful spot and use it like their personal trash bin. We came back, few times now, based on what it once was, but it just is not not what it used to be. read more

This whole island is infested with greed. Seems to be for only the rich. I recently took my wife there for our wedding anniversary. Being retired and a Army veteran, I wouldn't pay $590 for a nights sleep so we could walk to the beach to watch the sun come up. Instead I rented a motel room in Pooler and got up at 4:15 AM to drive to Tybee. You got only $8.00 for parking from me. In the future I will stay where at least there's some free public parking. I'm very disappointed with the leadership of Tybee. read more

Tybee is great! A couple years ago, I stayed on Whitemarsh Island for a few days and we took a day trip over to the beach. We had a great time but felt we didn't get enough time to explore the Tybee. The following year, we decided to rent a place right by the beach for Labor Day Weekend. If you're looking for a laid back beach town with a quirky vibe, this is it. I knew from the first trip that parking can get dicey in peak season so I wanted to be somewhere where I didn't have to move the car. All weekend we walked to the beach, shopped the little downtown, ate out at great restaurants, and hit the bars too. I met some awesome locals and really enjoyed my long weekend. I checked out Tybee Island while I was visiting my friend in Savannah. It's about a 30 minute drive from Savannah, but it's a pleasant drive. We went on a Sunday and the forecast was calling for some rain. There was hardly anyone on the beach (I'm guessing because of the forecast). It did rain a little bit but we were still able to have a great day at the beach. The water was warm and not too choppy. The beach itself was in great condition. The only thing I would say is that there is not a ton to do on the island so if you are a partier, this may not be the place for you. But for a low key beach, you should check this out. read more

My family loves Tybee. And many of my friends think of Tybee as there favorite beach. But I also know some people that don't like Tybee. It doesn't have high rise condos or white sand. But it does have so much charm. Most of the businesses are not chains but independently owned so your experience there will be unique to Tybee. It's small enough to visit a few different parts of the beach on one day. There is north beach that has a very cool patio bar where you can get great food. There is the main section near the pier that offers the most traditional beach experience. And what we call creek side, which doesn't offer waves unless a boat goes by, But offers a laid back experience and a perfect spot to fish. There is a new marine science center at North Beach but I havent gotten a chance to go yet. If you like a more low key beach experience with lots of good food, you should give Tybee a try. read more

This is my first time coming to this beach. This beach is nice and pretty clean! I had a really nice time there.BUT it didn't start out nice. I was going to rent a beach umbrella and some chairs, but no one was attending them- so I thought. My sisters and I stood around and looked for an attendant. There wasn't a sign about rates nor hours. So...my sister said," I ll bet if you picked up something, someone would find you." SO - I did. And sure enough , just as soon as I picked up an umbrella, someone come running up. Yelling,"HEY, HEY, HEY!!! " It was a guy throwing frisbee with another guy who I asked about the rentals! So that's when the attendant finally decided to stop playing just to tell me they were closing in 15 minutes , and jerk the umbrella from me! He could have told me that before! I hate this 'selective' service I've been receiving as of late. read more

This was our first visit to the area, and we're very pleased with our discovery of the lighthouse and Fort. I was a bit surprised by the cost of going up into the lighthouse, but I understand that it's necessary for its general upkeep. I was pleased to find that the price also included entry into the fort as well. There is plenty of paid parking in the area, as well as food and drink available close by. read more

The most beautiful beach I've visited in the South, so far! It's well spread, secluded, has tons of parking options, and a really cute town / bar scene by the water. We visited in late May and the weather was perfect. I've heard it gets pretty hot come August, but beautiful in the Fall. Why not 5 stars? It's so dang far off the beaten path! It took us forever to get to the water and back downtown, on that little two lane road. But hey, if you're staying on or near the beach it is super awesome, really walkable, and has a ton of restaurants and shops. I'd love to come back and rent bikes to explore the whole area on. There's so many different beaches and cool little marsh areas I saw while I was driving that I wanted to pull over and check out. The lighthouse was pretty, on the smaller side, and very beautifully decorated with a huge American flag for Memorial Day recognition. This beach must face the West in certain areas because the sunset was absolutely beautiful, right over the water, which I haven't seen much in the South. There were a few surfers out, tons of dolphins, and a handful of shore fishermen catching little floppy fish and throwing them back. I am dying to come back and spend a whole weekend here. It is great for families, young people, couples, and any other group of people. The only downsides were the traffic and the pricing of food in the beachfront restaurants. We ended up going back downtown for dinner after spending the afternoon on the beach because the prices were just too unreasonable. Other than that, it is straight heaven! read more

Tybee Island - Perfect setup. - Beaches Near Me - Tybee Island, Georgia

I discovered Tybee Island randomly as I was exploring Savannah, Georgia. I believe I found a brochure about Tybee Island at one of the Visitors Center and this place looked worthwhile to come out to for the day. So...after enjoying the southern charm of Savannah...here I was heading to Tybee Island. Tybee Island is only an 18 mile drive to the beach shores from Savannah along Highway 80. Now for me being a very touristy kind of person...the moment I entered the township of Tybee Island, there's a terrific Welcome Sign that I had to pull over for and grab a picture of to officially announce that I had arrived! I'd recommend stopping for this sign. I found it fun, lol. Before ever getting to the beach coast, I had read in this brochure that the lighthouse here is another worthwhile stop. So...I simply plugged the lighthouse into Google Maps and had no issues finding it. Upon arriving it's a $10 fee to enter and walk to the top of the lighthouse. It was pleasant to capture photos of the scenic Georgia shores. Plus even the actual lighthouse was photogenic. I appreciated making a visit here for an hour or so. Before leaving this lighthouse they have a small gift shop for any souvenirs. Right behind the Tybee Lighthouse was an interesting looking fort, called Fort Screven. Had I not been to a few forts already during my time in Charleston I probably would have stopped here as well. This Fort Screven looked like it also had picturesque water views but the lighthouse for me certainly won out. Btw, there was another possible worthwhile looking fort just off Highway 80 as I was driving towards Tybee Island. It was called Fort Pulaski National Monument. Now normally anything designated as a National Park or National Monument instantly attracts me, but I also passed up on Fort Pulaski. I think I did because I had intentions on hanging out at the beach and relaxing for the day rather than partaking in any history lessons here. Ultimately I never did see Fort Pulaski. As I did drive by it said $10 fee to enter this historic fort area. Now finally driving the main road to arrive at the long stretch of beach, I'd best characterize the surroundings of Tybee Island as a very laid back typical beach destination. If you keep driving towards the end of Highway 80 you'll arrive at the centerpiece beach area where there'll be plenty of accessible parking lots. The big issue and I can see why people complain about this is...everywhere you try and park, it's metered fees and it's relatively expensive. Although I visited Tybee Island for a few hours at most...I'd say just be prepared to spend around $20 for parking for the entire day. If you know this ahead of time, it won't be as much of a shock to your system when you arrive. This way you won't start driving off to other parking lots and testing out fares somewhere else. In total, they're all pretty much the same. I found a parking lot as close to the beach as possible, paid my fee and headed towards the sand! One thing I'd mention also, there's a small little street of charming stores and quick bite restaurants to window shop at and or grab more touristy souvenirs. The name of this street is called Tybrisa Street, but it's very recognizable and I'd suggest stopping along this street during your time here. You can't miss it. Now...the beach shores and sand at Tybee Island is nice. It's cool and I spent some time lounging out here. But what I'd really like to point out as a memorable highlight was the Pavilion Pier. If you walk it...you pass through a little canopy and awning area where they have picnic tables, an All-American grill for burgers and sandwiches as well as a refreshing Pina Colada/Iced Drinks station as well. So, this pavilion is a good opportunity to sit down and have lunch or a snack before heading back to the beach shores. Walking through the Pavilion Pier towards the end of the boardwalk...you're afforded terrific views of the scenic Tybee Island shoreline. The end of this pier is definitely an opportunity to take some good photos with the beach, sand and crashing waves set in the background. It was at this moment where I admired being here at Tybee Island the most...sort of summing up what makes this beach so unique. And if you care, at the end of this pier, they offer fishing pole rentals for anyone. One final little nugget I'd like to mention...upon entering the boardwalk pavilion, there's a cool sign that I found to be worthy of a picture. It was a Hurricane Storm Surge Elevation Meter. From categories 1 - 5 in different colors, I found it to be a playful chance to stop for a picture. You'll see it...it's just off to the left hand side before entering the boardwalk pier. Overall, I very much liked my time at Tybee Island. Even for me being from the hub of beaches and coasts in Florida, I still found this place just east of Savannah to be a fulfilling day trip. read more

Such a great beach! My family and I have been enjoying Tybee Island for over a decade. We love the beach and the surrounding shops and restaurants. Usually, we stay on the island. This trip, we took an Uber from Savannah to get some Tybee Time. I will tell you, it was not easy finding an Uber back to Savannah. We were able to get a cab ride back. Someone should start a shuttle business to take people between Savannah and Tybee Island. read more

And both times, it felt like there were hardly an people around. I am not complaining, but just pleasantly surprised! The parking is expensive though!!! It's like a dollar for 10 minutes! Seriously! But it was worth it! Tybee Island is the closest beach for us. Only 45 minutes away. We've gone quite a few times, but tried the North Beach by the lighthouse today. It was packed. I think I'll go back to where we normally park. Less people. We were able to find a decent spot to keep our distance from people and I did like the bathrooms. I didn't find any shark teeth today. But overall great. I love that you can pay for and extend parking through an app! read more
