Looking for a stylist a bit closer to where I live, a friend referred me to Kelly at Twyst. My appointment was for a haircut and 1 process color (no highlights/foils, or anything complicated). When she was finished, I heard her tell me it was $116. Not bad, I thought. Well, I know I should have read the receipt better instead of signing because after I left I saw that I had actually been charged $160. Now, I'm all about paying for great service and have actually paid more than that at top salons in LA and NY, but trust me when I say, there was nothing special about her cut and color that should have cost $160. According to her price list on her website I should have been charged $105 ($50 for cut, $55 for color) I left her a msg the following day asking why I was charged so much. She then left me a msg with her reason, stating something along the lines that because she applied the color to my roots first, then the rest of my hair, that she had to charge me an additional $55. HUH?!? She then stated that if I had anymore questions I should call her. I did--3 times in a 7 day period, but she would not return my call. I did pursue a $55 credit with my credit card company, but because I had actually signed the receipt, there wasn't much for them to do, which I can understand. What I don't understand is why Kelly wouldn't return my calls when I was still questioning the charge and her ridiculous explanation. If I were a hairstylist who had an unhappy customer I would want to at least attempt to make things right by returning their phone call and explain the charge.
When you think about the business and money she will lose when I tell ALL my family, friends, and acquaintances of my experience with her, well, it pales in comparison to the $55 I lost.
It would be in her best interest to keep in mind that social media and online rating boards are a wonderful thing when referring a hairstylist...OR warning against one.
Needless to say, I am now going back to my previous/awesome stylist and will happily hike the extra 15 minutes to her salon.
Update: After speaking with a manager at my credit card company, I did get a FULL refund. Whether or not they still paid Twyst, I don't know -- or care. Take it from me...your credit card company does NOT want to lose your business, so you should insist on a refund when you have truly been ripped off, as I was. read more
