That was a great first impression. And then our server greeted us by asking which of us was celebrating her birthday. I'll assume that was a brainfart or a failure to read the reservation notes, but I wondered briefly whether he assumed two women dining together wouldn't be celebrating an anniversary. We started with drinks; she had a 1988 (a variation on a French Blond, but named as a tribute to the year the Women's Business Ownership Act allowed the owner to go into business for herself) and I had a Royal Navy (a zero-proof cocktail with delicious herbal and citrus flavors). They were both outstanding. The cheese board, listed as the chef's selection of 4 cheeses and housemade crostini, also included a cube of guava jelly as lagniappe. The kitchen sent it out without crostini, and our server (not one of their regular servers, I guessed) didn't tell us what any of the cheeses were. This baffled me; when we ordered it the server actually explained what 'crostinis' (sic) meant, as if we were unfamiliar with the term. Whatever they were, they were tasty, and lucky for us none was soft enough to need a platform. My wife says her jumbo shrimp skewers were great and she loved the chimichurri enough to take it home for later. My market salad ("local lettuce mix, rotating summer veg & dressing") was a perfect example of quality over quantity: pecans, crumbled cheese, fresh berries, and raspberry vinaigrette on leaf lettuce. Eight beautiful, tender pieces of lettuce. So I certainly had room for dessert. And the dessert was a real treat: a three-inch peach caramel tart, an anniversary gift to us. We enjoyed it and had an enlightening conversation with the charming GM, who confirmed my suspicions that the uneven experience was a result of another staff member stepping in to cover for a server. If Apero fits your budget once in a while, give it a try. They're likely to delight you. (But if you're used to larger portions, you might want to have a bit of a snack first.)
