Well...I finally made it to twisted willow. There are a few things I consider when leaving a review (atmosphere, justify its price, food/drink, nearby comparable places to eat). The atmosphere and decor are 10/10 for a place like this. But everything else sorta fell flat. The frills look great and it's the historic part of Port Washington, but when you start digging into the meat and potatoes (and in my case the Mahi Mahi) it's really just not done that well. The food was creative but in the end it seemed more like a recipe your overzealous sister in law made where she kinda knew what she was doing but bit off more than she could chew. So the question is: does this place justify its price? Probably not. Again, if you're not looking for a lights out meal the atmosphere is great and the drinks were above average. read more

Poor service waitress dropped our drinks food was amateur, but the wait was unacceptable, people arriving after us got served before us. The owner had to come to our table personally and discuss the mishaps throughout our experience. One of the waitresses promised us a free item or discount but never got one. Atmosphere: Outdoor seating available, and two stories of dining. One area on the top floor is called the "Tree House". There is a bar on each floor. They have trivia cards on the table to keep you busy while you wait. Very small restroom on the top floor, but clean. Our table (4 top) felt very small for 4 people with water glasses, drinks, appetizers, entrees, bread service. Service: The host had our table ready upon arrival. Our server was attentive. Quick to try and clear plates out of the way and remove empty drinks glasses. Food: HUGE menu. I felt like it was all over the place, so many things to choose from. I had the beet salad, nothing special, and I wish they would have it on top of arugula or a spring mix vs. spinach, which doesn't add much flavor. My fiance ordered the hazelnut chicken dish. He seemed to enjoy it. The cheesecake was the highlight of the evening. The blackberry compote was very good. Drinks: Large drink menu. The price of the drinks will ensure a hefty bill if you are trying to experience this restaurant at a more reasonable price range. We ordered take out on a Saturday. They were crazy busy- but we really wanted to try the food. I opted for the stroganoff. It was perfection- nicely balanced with the mushrooms, spinach and pasta. The balsamic dressing for the salad was slightly creamy with a little zip. My sister tried the big kid Mac and cheese: this one lacked in flavor for me a bit. I felt it needed something else. We had a group of six on a Saturday evening. The atmosphere is rustic. Our server was very attentive and made our dining experience pleasant. We all had something different. As we were walking in downtown Port Washington, Wisconsin, this was the restaurant I wanted to go to! This one was screaming our name!! This is such an eclectic place. We were graciously welcomed by the hostess decked to the nines for St. Patrick's day with style! She was very informative and helpful. We made reservations to come back for dinner and eat upstairs! They have an upstairs and a downstairs. The upstairs is a bit more sophisticated. Not dress to the nines sophisticated, but just decorated with more flair. The upstairs also offers a water view. The menu is AMAZING. So many options! I wished we were in town longer so we could have come back again! My husband had the house specialty of meatloaf. He LOVED it. It was an original. I had mushroom and spinach pasta dish. A guilty pleasure that I enjoyed every bite of! When decided and entered the restaurant, we learned their kitchen hours and menu options vary throughout the day. Went here for my brother's birthday. We first started going here about 6 years ago. The food was incredible back then but has become average. So, I had to send my steak back for more cooking. I also have dentures and takes me a long time to eat a steak. A little while after we finished our meal, they started watching us and eventually coming to our table and asking if we were ready to leave. My brother likes to drink some beer and talk after dinner. Go sit at the bar, you say. There weren't 2 bar seats next to each other open. And why, when the seats we are in is where we want to be, at the table talking after supper. Besides, because of distance, I only see my brother about 6 times a year. The customer is always right. I could see if we just had some sandwiches. But, our bill was over $100 for 2 people. Our bar tab was more than the meals. The way I see it, we paid for those seats. They want to turn over the table for new people. Sorry, but there are exceptions to profit maximization. Even if you have reservations on the books. That is the restaurant business. You deal with it and make everyone happy. That's not just a customer's opinion. Between my brother and I, we figured out we had 32 years working in the restaurant business. We had a great time but walked out the door with no reason to come back. read more

The Twisted Wilow was amazing. Set in downtown Port Washington, it is a laid back little slice of heaven. The restaurant has a really nice feel to it, not too fancy, but fancy enough to make it exciting. We were greeted by a friendly hostess and immediately sat at a table. The restaurant wasn't full on this evening, but I could understand where a reservation might come in handy on a busy night. It looks like it could get crowded fast. Our waitress was nice and helpful with the menu. Besides knowing all of the beer and liquor choices, she did not hesitate to answer my what is your favorite "between these two" dishes question, but I am jumping ahead here! For starters, we ordered the Charcuterie plate which just happened to be half off! It had several wonderful kinds of cheese, a salami, grapes, crackers, and an apricot preserve on it. The best part was the cheese. It makes sense right?? Wisconsin - Cheese - Good. Along with the starters we were offered a large selection of beers and several interesting cocktails. I went with the Man Fashion which was a cross between a Manhattan and an Old Fashion. It was a really good drink. The friend had one of the local brews and enjoyed that as well. For dinner, I went with the Salmon special over the Ribeye at the suggestion of our waitress. It came with a risotto and spinach salad that had tomatoes in it and was just so tasty it was gone in no time flat. The Salmon had this amazing crisp to it on the outside but was PERFECTLY cooked on the inside. It was so good I could have eaten another order and not even felt remotely guilty about it. The service here has been exceedingly impressive. They go out of their way to make sure you are happy with the experience without being pushy. We have been three times now and every experience has been consistently great. The menu is interesting and fresh. The food has great seasoning and comes portioned well for the price. The blackened salmon and the bruschetta have been my favorite items so far. As for dessert, I think the carrot cake was even better than the cheesecake. If you get a kid's meal, it comes with a drink and a dirt cup which will gain you major points from a toddler. They have a tasty Sunday brunch with a crazy build your own Bloody Mary bar if that's your thing. The place just has good ambiance. I love it. read more

Was disappointed in the explanation for an upcharge for French Onion Soup. Soup of the day is $4.50 and French Onion is $5.50. Both meals I ordered came with soup of the day, upcharge was $4.00 per cup for the French Onion (i.e., in total paid $8.50 for French Onion). Should have ordered as ala cart versus not getting the soup of the day and paying an additional $4.00 for the French Onion. Since I guess they needed the money more, I paid the upcharge. But not sure this is good business. My advice is don't upgrade anything. The French Onion Soup was good and so it could have been worse. read more

Synopsis: I'm thoroughly impressed; an expansive menu that isn't overwhelming, excellent cocktails that are reasonably priced, classy yet familiar and comfortable decor/ambience, and of course, stellar service. Homemade cheesecake to die for. Scrolling Yelp! for a new restaurant, my date and I decided this would be the spot. It's fairly easy to get to, parking isn't an issue despite being street parking. We were seated quickly. Service was prompt the entire night, but never bothersome. I was impressed (by the bar) in particular for their Aviation, which did not omit violet liqueur from their recipe! House bread (sourdough?) was served with butter while we waited for the Twisted burger and mushroom-spinach stroganoff. My stroganoff was phenomenal: tender slices of flavorful mushrooms dance with fresh spinach in an encompassing sauce that's creamy without being weighty or heavy. Stroganoff is comfort food to me; to feel full but alert (even after a generous slice of cheesecake for dessert!) after such a meal was an unfamiliar experience. I stole a bite and maybe a few fries: cooked perfectly to order. Juicy, tender, full of flavor, yet lightly seasoned. The egg was just right; not runny but not solid. Described as over medium, it remained moist and wet, but didn't flow over the burger and make a mess. The cheesecake was the pièce de résistance: a three or four inch tall slice covered in a berry compote that was incredibly bright and sweet and tart without being overpowering, cloying, or puckering. If the entire menu was thrown out for cheesecake, I would be OK with it. read more

Service - excellent. we came with 4 adults and 3 small kids for brunch. it was not busy so we were seated immediately...and the servers brought out carrots and ranch for the kids bc they were hungry! crayons at the table, and family friendly staff. We snuck into Twisted Willow on a lovely sunny breezy Thursday at 5:15 PM before the reservations begin. The small bar area had 4 folks there and we are usually bar diners - love the chatting and getting the local advice everywhere we travel. However, we sat at an empty table for 4 next to the window in the bar area-perfect for us. We last had dined at the NEW Twisted Willow 5-6 years ago when they opened. We will not make that mistake again. A lovely server Andrea was our go-to and she was great. She was/is not a food snob like we are - but she got us. We shared a cocktail and ordered the duck liver pate described so well on the menu and, did order the red bordeaux that was paired for it also on the menu (we usually do NOT do this, but TW chefs and owners take the food seriously.) The pate served with truffled arugula and pickled onions was fantastic! There was gluten- free toast to accompany and Ned had the crostini. We were wowed with the truffle accents. Very rich - we ate it all. We could barely get through the salads we smartly chose post-pate. Small roasted beet and greens and candied walnuts - great dressing on the side. What a disappointment. Heard so much about this place so my husband and I went for our "date night". The food was really sub-standard. Chicken was undercooked and was slimy. The hamburger was over cooked and the service was barely okay. Our bill was nearly $100.00 for two of us with one appetizer and two entrees. We paid $16 for 3 crab bites. Overpriced and underwhelming. So many better places to eat in Port, sorry because the building is beautiful. They seem to be catering to the bar crowd, if so they should serve pup food. There should not be different standards for restaurants in small towns 30 minutes north of medium sized towns than there should be for restaurants in major cities. That is why I give these folks three stars. From what we ate and the service we got I have no idea why everyone is getting this place five stars unless those reviewers just don't get out much. It is a cool space, that's for sure. You feel like you are in a small New England town as you walk in and up the stairs into the bar area and then turn left into several dining rooms. They have interesting furniture and pieces, but we aren't there solely for the ambience. We ordered the donut holes because it was brunch and it came out with exactly 8 small holes which we ordered with cinnamon sugar coating and a nice little container of warm berry compote. That was delicious. Four stars here. Some weird things on the menu. Lemonade is $3.50 a glass with no free refills. The stuff must be pure gold because that is outrageous. Personally, I have experience working in the tea business and I cannot understand why these folks are charging so much. The coffee was good and at $2.00 with free refills that was worth it. The French onion soup had good onion flavor with a rich beefy broth and plenty of cheese melted over the top and sides of the bowls. Four solid stars. The sandwiches should be missed. Don't order them. They use those big honking Turano rolls that have way too much bread especially if you are going to be skimpily filling them the way this place did. A shrimp roll was served on that bread! You need a nice light loaf that doesn't overpower the shrimp filling. Two stars tops. The chicken bahn mi just lacked interest and flavor. It was also served on that big overwhelming roll - not the way it supposed to be done in a true Vietnamese fashion as the bread is only supposed to complement but not overpower the sandwich. Two stars as well. Lastly the vegetarian sandwich that sounded delicious - "The Shelbi" - needed about half the amount of bread that was there or it would have survived scrutiny with a brioche or other light role. The sautéed mushrooms, red peppers, cheese and spinach we're fine but also didn't seem quite warm enough. 2 1/2 stars for this one. These guys don't get how to make good sandwiches. The twisted burger was decent - the patty was wildly over cooked versus what was ordered but the fried egg was still runny, the bacon was crisp and the cheese was good. This was the only "sandwich" served on something other than that big honking role that used for the other sandwiches. They used a lighter roll. Nearly 4 stars for that. The carrot cake was moderately warm but not warm enough and was strangely served with a scoop of icing instead of having the cake piece entirely coated. It tasted fine but it was a weird and unappetizing presentation and a little dry on the edges of the cake that had no icing. The server disappeared for quite some time after dessert was served and we also had a bunch of different people dropping off food and service seemed disjointed. Three stars for service. The server recommended some salads that we did not choose and perhaps had we our experience would have been better. read more

Thanks again to Yelp for helping me find a great new spot I otherwise would have never found! It was my mom's birthday and I wanted to find a nice new restaurant to take her out to dinner. Based on the great reviews I found Twisted Willow. I called to make reservations for 3--which was super easy (and they even asked if there was a special occasion). NOTE: It would be nice if they participated in Open Table or some other online reservation service (Millennials don't like talking on the phone). We showed up on time and were seated promptly. The dining room is very charming with tasteful lighting, a grand piano, old photographs of Port, and a nice view of Main Street. Service was prompt and friendly (maybe friendly to a point of patronizing, but that might just be me). There is a nice selection of cocktails, wine, and beer. They include pairing ideas with all of their menu items, which is a nice touch. The prices are reasonable. The menu includes small plates, salads, entrees, sandwiches. The menu is an eclectic American farm to table fare with some random Asian inspired dishes. My mom, dad, and I all enjoyed our dishes. They were all seasoned nicely and the proteins were perfectly cooked. Total cost for three people (one appetizer, three entrees, bottle of wine, and one dessert) was $150. Twisted Willow is a phenomenal restaurant. The food and the service are top quality, and very consistent. Our favorite menu items are the French onion soup, the braised short ribs and the cheesecake. The French onion soup is rich and bold, and is basically the food equivalent of a warm hug. The short ribs are so tender, they just absolutely fall apart the second your fork touches them. The cheesecake is decadent and flavorful, with a lovely fruit jam on top. Somehow it is not overly sweet, the cheese flavor really comes through at the forefront. For a fine dining establishment, they have always been incredibly gracious when we have our baby with us. One time a server even set up a makeshift changing table in the bathroom for us to use. You can't go wrong here, honestly. It's great food and very kind people that go above and beyond for patrons. read more

Spent the weekend up in Port Washington for the weekend, great little town. My wife and I found the Twisted Willow on line and ended up be coming Twisted Willow restaurant STALKERS! Stoped in for some drinks and Saturday in their small down stairs bar. Met Joe the bar manager and fell in love with the atmosphere, and fun, knowledgable and up beat staff. At a good restaurant the food has to be good but what makes a good place into something super special is the staff, this sure is true at the Twisted Willow. We Decided to make it a Twisted Willow Weekend! Came back for dinner, then back for brunch on Sunday for there Bloody Mary bar and some sparkling wine. Wow. What a wonderful night out. The food was delicious. My mushroom and spinach (GF) was perfect. The noodles done al denta the flavor combination of spinach and mushrooms wonderful. The atmosphere was that of fine dining. Relaxing, soft music playing, couples able to converse without being loud. Decor comfortable and new. Wendy , our server, was personable and very knowledgeable of what was on the menu. The wine list, although not extensive, were well chosen and delightful. The description of the carrot cake doesn't do it justice--it's amazing! It's been a while since we have been able to enjoy such a nice night out.
