I came in about a week ago for a first time appointment at the recommendation of some friends. I was only told the salon name and not any particular stylist, so I didn't specify someone while booking; Jess ended up being my stylist. I told her I was looking to clean up the layers and take a little length off my hair, as well as do a little change in a style. I asked for my cut to be shoulder-length as opposed to the reference's collarbone-length hair, but otherwise was hoping they would stick to the reference. What I got was a VERY masculine, chin-length shag that looked NOTHING like the reference photos I showed (see attached). Additionally, my bangs are completely uneven, my sides are uneven, and it's so short that it's completely stubborn to any sort of styling. I tried to put on a brave face and act excited after, but I've cried about it every day since I got home. I waited a week to post this review in hopes that maybe I would grow to like it or it would look better with the right styling routine, but it's just as bad now as it was before. It's bad enough that I get wrongfully referred to as a man in public, something that never happened before this cut. I hate to have to write this review, but after reaching out to the salon I have now been waiting for them to get back to me on making it right (or even just an "I'm sorry that happened, your concern was heard") for over a month. I was told by reception that the manager or owner would get back to me within 24 hours when I called to cancel a follow up. If anything, please just use this as a warning to speak up for yourself in the chair any time you're at a salon! I've been going to Twisted Scissors for a few years now, for cut, color and highlights. I've had a great experience with several of the stylists in doing all over balayage + different non-permanent color dyes + basic trim and cuts. I'm rarely tied to a specific stylist because the balayage on brown hair seems to be a pretty standard ask, so I usually just go with whoever has availability. This go around I was had an apt with Rosy (an L3 stylist), who was genuinely all around delightful to talk to; I am truly hoping this was just a one-off / bad hair(styling) day for her. We talked and I shared pictures of what I was looking for, expressed my standard concern about piece-y highlights a-la-90s TV stars, and asked for warm honey toned balayage. Shared here is the one reference picture I KNOW we discussed liking the two "Honey" options, and I made several comments about how stilly it looks when your eyebrows don't match the top tones of your hair... regardless of if there was a miscommunication, when my final hair was reviewed I was a little shocked by how BLONDE it was. I KNOW that I mentioned I was uncomfortable with how light the face framing was and how it made my eyebrows pop off my face + how large some of the pieces were. She assured me that I should just make a reservation for two weeks out to tone it. The salon was close to closing and I felt like I was being rushed out, so I did that. After getting home and looking at it under different light, I was so uncomfortable with the roots, I literally went out to buy a headband to hide them before meeting up with friends. Until that night, never in my life have I had someone say to me "I cannot believe they let you walk out of the salon like that" nonetheless, multiple times in one evening. I had a business trip first thing the next morning, so had to "live" with it for a week before instituting my own fix (thx overtone). While it is not the worst color job I have ever seen, I was really was not happy with the end result compared to what I asked for, and felt that even when I voiced it I was told to just live with it. When I called the salon after a week to cancel the toning appointment and express my disappointment, the person at reception assured me they would make it right/ get back to me.... I'm absolutely regretting my decision to come here today for a "trim" and reshaping of my hair because I've been depressed all day and night. A month ago I gave myself a "shag" by following a YouTube tutorial and I felt self conscious about it and worried that perhaps my hair should be evened out a bit. I booked an appointment here yesterday and arrived a bit late due to traffic. Megan was my stylist and I'd never met her before so I showed her two hair photographs as inspiration. I prefer a natural long haired look and honestly I like a Natural, bohemian non fussy haircut that works with the natural wave and curl pattern of my hair. Megan suggested that we cut a layer at my crown to create "more volume" and she determined that i needed a dry cut to get more accuracy on the end results. Unfortunately my hair shrunk up considerably and it's definitely lost a ton of natural volume and width. I should not have agreed to her suggestion to layer the top of my hair because honestly it looks like a short haircut-- not a long layered cut which i had given myself. She rushed through the cut angling my hair and rounding out way too many layers just to force out the curl pattern. I had suggested we round brush my hair as a treat and she strongly discouraged it letting me know this particular cut she gave me would definitely look "weird". Well I like versatility and like switching up my look so I wish she would have simply shampooed my hair first and taken off just a slight amount from the bottom and focus on bringing a solid line to my perimeter instead of chasing a specific curl pattern. I was extremely disappointed today. My profile definitely doesn't look flattering and my face really looks fat even though my face traditionally is thinner looking. I would never recommend twisted scissors to anyone seeking a trim. I saw her cut inches off my hair and I wanted my hair to get at least down to my chest. Now I'm really going to have to practice self discipline and not cut it myself or allow anyone else to play games with hair. I even tried putting my hair in a loose ponytail but there's not much weight left in my hair so it's looking kind of sparse. I don't have heavy, thick hair like she claims I have. She literally over layered my hair and removed the weight and length just to force a specific curl pattern. My hair is wavy, curly and frizzy by nature. I accept it for what it does but she scalped me and took the heaviness and widened out of my natural hair texture today leaving me with a haircut I absolutely hate! I'm not recommending this salon to anyone. I felt ugly all day and Megan lacks sensitivity and rushed me through a cut that i absolutely don't feel good about. She had so much hair to work with and she chose an easy route without considering my bone structure or physical structure. I feel so ugly. I feel like Megan intentionally cut my hair into a mullet instead of a shag just to artificially force a firm curl pattern in my hair. She overtexurized my hair leaving me with a weightless unstructured mess! I'm leaving my before photo here with me wearing a coat and the second photo is the choppy mess she left me with. Whatever you call this cut I feel ugly ....it looks like a mullet and she stripped my hair of body. Never again! I'm tired of trusting strangers with my hair! The manager just called me an hour ago deeply apologetic for my experience and issued me a full refund. Because the manager has been kind enough to respond to my email from last night and genuinely listen to what happened I am adding one more store to my original 1 star review. I sincerely hope Megan will not make this mistake with other people. This morning in the shower I saw isolated strings and wisps of hair on their own. Wispy ends like this leads to breakage and hair damage. The cuticle of the hairshaft should never be this exposed. I can understand getting a haircut like this from a novice but not a seasoned pro. I do not recommend anyone allowing a stylist to ever administer a " dry cut". Thanks for the refund...honestly I appreciate the salon manager reaching out to me today. read more

After having a bad experience in October 2021 when I first moved to Chicago at a JCPenney salon I knew I needed to pick somewhere that had hairstylists that were motivated to make their clients look better and not worse. I'm glad I picked Twisted Scissors. I had to wait a month to make it in to their weekend books but I'm glad I waited. I usually get my hair trimmed and re-dyed a dark red color. I had a stylist that did my hair for 10+ years back in Seattle where I'm from, and in October when I moved here and had the JCP stylist destroy the cut and color it was traumatizing. Mallory was my hair stylist at Twisted Scissors and she did a fantastic job. She listened to what had happened at the JCP salon, and asked if I had pictures of how my hairstylist in Seattle used to do my hair. She was careful with trimming my bangs (which I really appreciate because if you mess up the bangs it can make or break a haircut). The color is almost exact to how my stylist did it in Seattle. It is a little darker but that's ok because that means it will take longer to fade. The salon itself sort of reminds me of a tattoo parlor to a degree which is fun. They have interesting art around the salon and different types of displays/set ups that accentuate the vibe of the salon. Everyone was polite and friendly and enjoying themselves. I'm definitely going to come back in 6 weeks and get my hair done again by Mallory. I'm so glad I will have a new regular stylist in Chicago that I can trust. read more

Ever since the pandemic, I feel like quality and service has gone downhill. I called to book an appointment for an upcoming wedding that I wanted to have my hair in a nice updo. It wasn't a crazy hair style I wanted, just a simple bun or slick backed ponytail. I really hate to say this, but the receptionist is either unprofessional or simply doesn't know what they're doing. They told me, verbatim, "ummm let me text the girl coming in Saturday and see if they're available. Have you been here before?" Too stunned to even respond to that, I just said yes. She asked me for my number and they'll send me a text confirmation of the appointment. She didn't give me a name of who would be fixing my hair either, only referred to them as "the girl." 72 hours later, still no confirmation text. Is it that hard to check the schedule for who is working that day? The computer is right in front of you. And the fact that you told me "let me text whomever is working that day" made me regret calling in the first place. Just say you're all booked for the day, simple as that. Thankfully, I booked a different place for my wedding updo because the last thing I need is showing up without a confirmation and being told "we don't have you booked." This isn't the first time receiving the runaround from this receptionist either. Every time I call, it's the same ordeal of nonsense. I'm either put on hold, or I'm on the phone for 15 minutes just to book a hair dye and hair cut. I've never had this happen before, and I'm pretty sure that this isn't normal. Telling the receptionist the name of the person you want to see, and what you want done to your hair isn't rocket science. It's not like I'm requesting a balayage where time is needed for this. read more

The cut and color were both totally different then the inspiration pics I brought. I should have said something yesterday, but it was already after closing, I felt awkward, and I didn't see how bad it was til I had washed it. Called today to ask for a fix and was made to feel like idiotic trash, until finally I just told them never mind. Last week I made an appointment for today for a haircut with Scarlet at 1pm on Point St. Today I received a phone call at 12pm from someone at Twisted Scissors telling me Scarlet was in the middle of a color and could I move my appointment to 2pm or 2:30pm today. I received this voice mail while I was on the train headed to my appointment. I got off the train to call them. No answer! I called again; this time someone from their other location picked up so the Point St location still is not picking up. I had to leave a message stating that I could not reschedule. I wish I could charge them like they would charge me if I cancelled on the last minute. Glad Scarlet has so many clients she can afford to abuse them, and the salon does not care about customers. I've been going to Anna since before Twisted Scissors opened! When our schedules don't match up, I cheat on Anna with Amber. They are both incredibly talented, and my hair always looks great when I leave. Because I've been going to Anna for so long, she has an idea of what I like so I can sit in her chair and say, "Cut off all my hair, I don't know what I want, other than short" or "whatever colors you think will look good" and she always knocks it outta the park. . She has a fantastic skills with color and gray blending & has given me everything from punky mullets, shags and conservative bobs. She's the bomb. read more

I have been going to twisted scissors for a while now getting haircuts. I love their style and the staff! This last visit wasn't the greatest experience. I went in for a balayage at the beginning of June and sadly my hair was ruined. I wasn't concerned with not achieving the ideal color because I'm aware it takes time. But what got me was how messy my hair came out. I had patches and bleed throughs. I was so dissatisfied and sad! I would be VERY wary coming here to get a haircut... I can't speak for color because I didn't get one there. I actually would avoid it at all costs. I have naturally straight hair so it shouldn't be that difficult to cut. I asked to have my hair cut to a medium length with very subtle to almost no layers. I ended up having a super choppy haircut and it looks terrible. Because it's so short there's really no easy way to fix this. I'm extremely upset because I paid $70 for this? Please don't go here. I've come here twice. The first time I had to continue cutting my hair at home because it was not even close to what I wanted (Jane Birkin shag). The second time I feel like my stylist was so disappointed that I just got a bang trim that the service was cold. It's nice when people are nice. I hesitated to write this review because it's almost a non-issue. There are other salons to go to, however this was one of the only ones open on a Monday. I understand tipping in cash for tax purposes too, but it's 2019, if you want people to tip in cash, have an ATM. Or offer to Venmo a stylist. Anyway, I made an appointment at Twisted Scissors. I was very nervous. New hair people are scary and sometimes they make you ugly or turn your hair orange. When I got there I knew I made the right choice. First they have a planned parenthood sticker in the window so they are obviously good people. There are also many plants which are the other symbol of good people. Heather took my hair from a faded birds nest mess of hair into this rainbow beauty. She lightened it perfectly then stood their and painted each strand into the most unicorn rainbow in your face mix of colors and I am obsessed. The process was delightful and we had good conversation for the entire 4ish hour period I sat in her chair. This place is worth the money and Heather will leave you looking A+. read more

I decided to see Kelly because I wanted someone who was good with color and cuts. I have NEVER been disappointed. She has cut my hair since 2014 and has colored it as well. When she called to let me know that she would be moving to Twisted Scissors I knew I would follow her there. I highly recommend Kelly; she always listens to my requests and questions. Kelly does an incredible job with cuts and styling, and when she colors my hair it always looks healthy and the color is seamless. I've heard wonderful things about Twisted Scissors for years, but it wasn't until my longtime stylist started working there that I actually visited. I must say, I get the hype! There is such an incredible vibe and energy there that I haven't experienced in other salons. The decor is so fun and kitschy, and it seemed meticulously maintained. I felt completely comfortable visiting during covid, and noticed how protocols were strictly followed. Kelly Petric has been my stylist for several years, and always goes all out. She is extremely knowledgable, and takes the time to explain the various procedures we've done. She is the only person I have ever completely trusted to do my hair. I know each time I visit her, that I will leave feeling energized and feeling beautiful. Kelly is incredibly talented and professional. I got a haircut and full set of highlights with Monica for the first time today! A little backstory, I have not had a haircut or any color done since January of this year so clearly everything was really grown out and not looking as good as it could color wise and length wise. Also, in April I had the great 3 am crisis idea of giving myself bangs... Because why not it's quarentine and things couldn't get worse, right? Well now I'm currently trying to grow them out. Monica did a fantastic job asking me tons of questions, not judging me with my bad bang job and made me feel welcomed and at ease the entire time. She blended my really grown out highlights with my new color AMAZINGLY and took a lot of care when cutting my hair to make sure she could make it healthy, as well as frame it while letting my growing out bangs blend in better. I got my hair cut by Kelly while visiting Chicago back in like... 2012 (she was at another salon back then). She did such an incredible job that I wrote a yelp review and said "if I ever move to Chicago, Kelly is my go to girl!". Fast forward 6 years and I was living in Chicago, found my old yelp review, and booked a cut with Kelly asap. She did such a great job with cutting my hair, and I'm a freak who needs it done a super specific way. She also took my dark brown hair to bright neon orange--something I had been wanting to do for awhile but was afraid to ruin my hair. Needless to say, my hair was not ruined. She was able to lift it super light while maintaining the integrity of my hair, and it looked exactly the way I pictured it in my head. Not only is she a wizard with hair cuts, bleaching, and fantasy colors, but she's an incredible person. She's great at feeling where you're at in terms of chattiness, and never forces conversation if you're in a quiet mood, but is down to chit chat when you are. Look no further for a bomb ass haircut/color with a kind, hilarious, and genuine person. For the space: everyone at TS is also super cool, you can tell they genuinely enjoy where they work, and being around one another. I normally go to their sister store Twisted Scissors Little Sister but this time I had to move an appointment and I'm so glad I did. Selina cut my hair and she was amazing. Super fast, super friendly, low key and very nice. I have thick, curly, wavvyish hair that is pretty unruly and she did an awesome job. Three weeks later and I'm still getting compliments on my haircut. Cannot recommend this place enough. I hadn't had my hair cut in two and a half years. I moved to Chicago 5 years ago and had a bad experience getting my hair done here, so I would just get it done at the shop I went to back in LA when I went back to visit. My last couple trips fell through and I just couldn't take my hair any longer. I made an appointment with Maggie. She was phenomenal! So nice. Really listened to what I wanted and made it happen. I absolutely love it. We took about 12 inches off. The salon itself was great. They are taking COVID-19 precautions seriously, which I really appreciate. My amazing stylist, whom I adore, was Fatima. When she moved out of Chicago, I had to find someone else to do my hair. Next to buying a house, that has to be the most stressful life change, right?! For a long time, I was intimidated by Twisted Scissors: were my desired haircuts and colors too basic for such a patently hip establishment? Would I crumble in the presence of impossibly aloof stylists? The answer to both questions is a resounding NOPE. This is a really inclusive and professional salon, and every single person I've encountered at Twisted Scissors has been friendly, attentive, and never too pushy about product upsells. More importantly, each stylist and colorist has been excellent at hearing out my ineloquently stated hair ideas and somehow brilliantly interpreted them such that the end of every haircut and color has left me really "feeling myself," know what i mean? Bouncing out that salon door with a refreshed sense of confidence and flair, is what i'm saying. Anna, in particular, is my favorite stylist and colorist by far! She has taken my hair from dark, dark brown to brilliant rooty blonde to a superchic lavender/mauve with an artful shadow root to ensure I don't have to kill my hair with bleaching every other month. She's so client-oriented that when I needed to book an early morning appointment to get my hair done up for my sister's wedding, she arranged for the salon to open an hour early to accommodate my need. I have never felt so at home at a salon as I do at both Twisted Scissors and Little Sister (Avondale). Their prices are more than fair for the quality of work you're sure to receive at either location. P.S. I cannot say enough great things about Twisted Scissors. The staff is so friendly, attentive, they take disinfecting the shop very seriously whilst creating a calm and relaxing environment during a pandemic.
