Kava, matcha and coffee bar that felt like a dimly lit cave of tranquility. Every inch of the bar contained detailed imagery with actual water flowing thru a metal pipe in the wall surrounded by aged roots, moss and withered brick. There is no beer sold here although has similar offerings as a beer brewery with board games and even a library providing a gentle fun atmosphere. Not really a fan of kava, which I tried twice and made my lips and throat numb with an odd taste similar to wet dirt, but flavored matcha OK. I ordered a double shot of Guatemalan espresso which was served in a mini porcelain coffee cup. It was visually appealing and tasted medium roasty. The gender neutral bathroom with rustic terracotta tile floors with a metal and wood industrial-style bench with a few stickers and graffiti. A baby changing table is affixed to the wall also plagued with graffiti. These additions could be considered intentional or condoned but seem to fit the total ambiance of the bar. This kava cafe was such a treat. Not a kava girl but I was eating on the patio next door and watched lots of people going inside and got interested. OMG the dark room first was eerie but the decor was fantastic and sat in a little section in the back with a coffee and had to take pictures of everything. Perfect mix of Polynesia and Pirate vibes. The decor is inviting and relaxing, the perfect atmosphere for chilling with friends or meeting new ones. Even though it's the perfect setup for a bar, I think it's much better suited for a kava establishment. Marty was my bartender (I'm not sure what you call someone who's serving non-alcoholic drinks). He was able to explain the process of making kava , and the difference between kava and kratom, and gave me great recommendations to try. I had the Lua, a mix of guava and juices with the kratom. Not too sweet and really brought out the tropical vibes. Many of the patrons brought their own games to play and Twisted Roots also had quite a selection. They have game nights, karaoke, live music all available to see on their calendar. I'll definitely be back. There's so many things to try. This is my first time here at the Twisted roots Kava Bar, as it is relatively new down here in Hollywood and it just so happens we met the owners out one night at Mai Kai. Also, it's a first time having Kava. So for me so it only made sense to take my lovely Lady down there and say hi to Aimee and Darren to try some Kava. Another added bonus was that they had a rockabilly band playing called the Slip and the spin outs.. Very up beat band, excellent stuff But back to the this newly found spot. When you walk in, it really takes you by surprise but in a good way, There is a lot going on and everything is so unique and cleverly done. Hesitant to step in here but turned out to be great and exactly what I needed. A bar that has much creativity and offers a wide variety of drinks with holistic approaches. My fiance tried the Kava, though horrible in taste offered a range of benefits, she also the cursed earth, which was more like an oreo milkshake. I had the mitrajito - tasted great but more importantly, I "discovered" what "Kratom" was and truly impressed me in the benefits felt. I had no idea what I was walking into, but so glad I did! Truly an experience in itself. We had just had dinner at the Mexican place next door (highly recommend btw) and were intrigued by the Shipwrecked themed door of the bar, so of course I had to try it out. THE PLACE: Located in Hollywood beach plenty of street parking was available. Bar seating is avaible inside and outside. Inside, the place is extravagantly decorated, almost transports you to a new world - filled with tress, branches, lanterns, mini water falls and the never-ending but relaxing sound of crickets. Once in a while, you will get this metal chain, water, ship-like audio, making it evermore immersive. There is bar seating and tables avaible, along with many books, board/card games, markers and craft items for you and your party to be entertained by. Very comforting and inviting. THE DRINKS: Themed and with the cutest dishware! Seasonal menu was also avaible at the time of my visit. If you check in, a free bare/original kava drink is avaible. I tried the free Kava (horrible taste but learned it isn't meant to satisfy your tastebuds) and immediately numbed my tongue and throat. I also had the Non-alcoholic/vegan/seasonal "Cursed Earth" (good and whimsical) and my boyfriend had the " Mitrajito" (great taste). THE SERVICE: We were completely oblivious to what Kava, Kratom or anything else was, to us, they were just words or names for menu items. With this mindset, we selected our drinks. When I pulled up the yelp free kava drink, it is then that the lovely staff was kind enough to explain what Kava was, its benefits, taste and ecological history - so appreciated. They were so nice, soothing and had excellent service. We stayed a bit longer to enjoy our drinks and played a few games. It wasn't until our ride home, that we "discovered" what Kratom was. On our ride home my boyfriend said that he felt great, relaxed with a clear yet focused mind - to me, this is normal, but my boyfriend has anxiety, so this was odd for him. I thought that maybe he was just in a good mood because of the great night we had. He insisted that he had never felt this before and that it had to be the drink he had. So of course, I look at the menu, read "Kratom" and had to google it. Thanks to Twisted Roots, Kratom and frankly, our ignorance, my boyfriend was able to experience peace of mind and living without anxiety. So I couldn't be more thankful for this experience. I haven't been to Kava bar in years since Purple Lotus in Sobe turned me off by playing Fox & Friends on the big screen. Twisted Roots is located in the same location of the previous kava bar Mystic Water. The new owners totally renovated the place, gone is the giant indoor "Lord of the Rings" tree but arrived is the Hogwarts Academy of Kava. The place is loaded with spiritual & tribal artifacts, games, books, and popular movie replicas like the gold statue from Raiders of the Lost Ark. The whole layout of the place is truly comfy. Melody.. Oh Melody my attractive budding kava-tender, she alone makes me want to return every week. I was served up some delicious kava with grapes. I wish they would get more creative with their menu like Tiki Tide Kava Bar on Griffin rd. Typically I take off stars for places that allow people to vape their cancer sticks indoors, but I believe they have machines that suck up the air because I didn't really smell any of it, nor were my lungs queezing. Update : ~~cons After going there for a few weeks there's too much vaping(even the employees vape behind the bar), some patrons stand outside the open door and smoke cigarettes, so periodically the smoke draws inside. read more

On April 15th at approximately 7:45pm While sitting in the Twisted Roots Kava Brewery location, located in the downtown Hollywood FL area, I witnessed two extremely upsetting happenstances while enjoying a girls date with my friend. Firstly I saw one of the Kava tenders who everyone apparently refers to as (Pucchi) exchanging words with what appeared to be a customer. Xavier now that I know his name known as pucchi was stating that he would be kicking this guy out if this customer (white guy) did what it was that he alleged that he was doing again. As a consistent Patreon of this particular business, I have personally witnessed on more then one occasion this particular employee engaging in negative demeaning experiences with paying customers. I immediately thought to myself that this was something that this employee had created amongst his own volition. As I'm sitting near the wall with a friend there was what looked to be an African American male standing in line, in front of what looked to be two (European guys) my friend, myself and the young guy of color as well as all of the other folks in the building suddenly all overheard a loud bang near the door. We all immediately turned around to see what the noise was, only to then witness the three white gentleman physically fighting. There were two guys going at each other at the door and one appearing to be breaking it up. As this situation was being cleared out, the guy of color happened to be next in the line after one more guy to order. Mind you again I have patronized this establishments on several occasions and have seen this black guy there not being of any bother to anyone. At all. I over heard the African American guy mention to an older white guy when he first arrived that he was in the line prior to the happy hour cut off period of 8pm, and wanted to make sure that he let this guy know just in case the Kava tender Xavier gave him an issue. I believe that the older white guys name was (Tom) that the black guy was speaking to. As the black guy walks to the register to order his drinks, things seemed normal and cordial as he and the kava tender exchanged words. All of a sudden I over hear the Kava tender tell the black guy "when have you ever gotten change here? In a very passive aggressive tone. The African American guy then stated that he could not hear him, so the Kava tender who's name is Xavier said it agin "Have you ever gotten change here"? "Do you need the .44 cents" The black guy then said "I get change when it's mine" I don't need the .44 cents I want it as it's mine" Xavier then goes into the cash register to retrieve this mans change to then raise his hands towards the air as if he was preparing to start the process of feeding a puppy standing on its toes, and drops the guys money ALL OVER THE COUNTER. My friend and I were acting as if we had not just seen what we had seen, disgusted by the kava tenders behavior. All of a sudden the kava tender (Xavier) runs away from the bar to then return with a manger who told the African American guy to "go fuck himself" and to get out of his bar" VERBATIM. I have spent a substantial amount of money at this establishment and have never had any issues throughout my time going here, but when I witnessed this I made up in my mind to NEVER EVER RETURN. I am repulsed at the kava tenders behavior and the manger ( Brandons ) behavior and his inability to act morally and ethically sound as a manger. The first thing he should have done was have asked the black guy what had happened!! Xavier who everyone refers to as pucchi has also been known from what my friends have stated to transport contraband throughout this Kava Bars location several times a week and has also been seen using illegal substances outside of the back of the establishments building. This is also the same employee that told an acquaintance of mine at a different kava bar that he hates the owner of Twisted roots as they forced management to make him recently sign an NDA. Brandon the manger at this location has been known amongst employees to spew racist rhetoric about marganlized and minority communities and has also been known to support racist and prejudice behavior from employees. I hate to say this but I can now believe this after overhearing him threaten to call the cops on the African American guy who had his money essentially thrown at him. (How mean of a person) can one be!!! As a 24 year old white/ Hispanic girl from this area who likes to consider herself an advocate for change, this was wrong on so many levels and should have never happen. Not to him and not to anyone that steps foot in this business ever again. To the guy that experienced this on Saturday, I hope that you see this and hold them accountable. This is a magical place. I went on Friday, May 10th with two friends and discovered my newest watering hole. Situated in the middle of downtown Hollywood, Twisted Roots is a welcome and refreshing new addition to the kava community in South Florida. Walking in made me feel like a tourist in my own city. Everything from the decor, the music, the prompt and friendly service, and just the overall atmosphere made me forget I was in the busy rat race of Broward County. This is how a kava bar should be! I was impressed by every single detail and I can tell there was a lot of attention paid to those details. The bar pays homage to the Polynesian roots of kava (no pun intended.) I felt like it was a mix between a newer, upscale kava bar and the famous Mai Kai restaurant in Fort Lauderdale. If you've been to Mai Kai, you'll know exactly what I'm talking about. Most importantly, there is a tangible abundance of passion and respect for kava culture inside those walls. All that being said -- if you have never been to a kava bar or had kava, I think Twisted Roots would be the perfect place to begin your journey. Seriously. Twisted Roots is only the second Kava Joint I've ever been to. I am simply a patron that felt obligated to write this review. Aside from having a stunning ambiance and a lighted ceiling with a mid-evil touch, which I've never seen before, the staff is very friendly. I wasn't primed to write this nor am I an employee or friend of am employee but merely a patron. They also serve a great product and are professional mixologist in which two of them stand out and can basically run the entire bar by themselves (in many cases they do). They are Yvani and Drake, there is no other way to put it except they are badass. Truly an experience, oh, I almost forgot the music and drums which is captivating and soothing.
