There are many curly hair salons to pick from. I encourage you to pick this one last. The owner (Theresa) and my stylist had a conflict before I arrived at the salon. The owner was talking with me about what was happening in front of the whole Salon. So unprofessional and cut in to my appointment time. I did find out that she does this too often. I have had countless bad haircuts over the years and it wasn't until I found a salon that specializes in my hair type that I have been so satisfied. Right off the bat, walking in, there was no receptionist. We stood in the walk-in for about a minute before somebody from the back, actively doing hair greeted us. When the receptionist finally came in, she was sweet but not very helpful. The woman cutting our hair, Lori, styled our hair as though she hadn't left the 80's. my mom and i asked for curtain bangs. Neither of us got them. We both have different hair types, I have 3c, my mom has 2b, however Lori couldn't even get it right on either kind. Lori completely fucked my shit up. I look like a shrek villager. Instead of making curtain bangs that gradually lower to frame your face, she just bluntly gave me straight bangs. She also fucked my moms cut up, gave her these weird whispy pieces that stick out away from her face. (??) While my mom was waiting in the little lobby, they offered her tea except they had no sugar or cream and gave it to her in a very odd jar with a weird lid that ended up leaking. Lori didn't even know how to finish up styling my hair and had ANOTHER stylist come over and show her how to do it while doing it for her. I think the worst part is how goddamn expensive all of it was. My mom and i have been coming here for a bit but it's like they've slowly been clearing out people who know what they're doing. I now consider it a mini mental health wellness retreat. I live in Stillwater and followed my Master Stylist, Lori here. Each appointment was a little magical; the decor, atmosphere, peaceful, cool, funky, non-pretentious vibe and privacy with my stylist. Lori had me try curly for my first time my second appointment. I knew I had some wavy in my hair but never knew what it could do. Pretty cool and no damage done. Sorry no photo to share. This last hair retreat I got the guts up to try an Inverted Bob. I've been admiring it on other women for some time. Again I'm delighted with the outcome. The special care and wonderful outcome are a great pick me up that lasts for weeks! I've had health issues these past few years. I've had to trim my "extras". I don't view my hair care as an extra anymore. It's not just external care. I trim back slightly in other areas to keep my self- care great hair pick me up going. Long story longer...If you are considering a new salon or stylist " I can't count the ways" Lori, my stylist gets me and gets my hair. I love twisted hare because they taught me new ways to style my curly hair. My curls are always poppin' by the time I leave because the stylist use the deva curl method. I always ask for Theresa when I get my hair cut because she is a master hair stylist/cutter and knows how to shape curls! People have stopped me in the street and have complimented my hair in pictures a lot right after it gets cut by her! Although the hair cut is a little pricey if you ask for Theresa it's worth it! How many times do you actually get your hair cut? Might as well have it done right the first time so that it lasts for a while! This time I got my bangs cut and they let me know that they offer complimentary bang trims in between cute which is super nice! She had, in fact! She told me she'd gone to Janessa at Twisted Hare salon just that day. Her hair looked so curly and healthy. Monica said she doesn't have thick hair but the cut and style was so awesome she felt transformed. My first visits to the salon - years ago - are a faint memory. I wasn't thrilled with the cut, though I really like the salon and the products. Fast-forward and I was recommended to visit two specific stylists at the salon. True to what another post mentioned, I think the biggest difference in a curly cut comes from stylists with curly hair themselves. I was directed to see either Celeste or Erika, and it so happens that Erika had an opening (and it's always good to have second stylist, just in case!). Erika is super-attentive and has all sorts of information and ideas to share while you are in her chair. Her knowledge is second only to her enthusiasm. She really wants you to feel good about your hair and the style. I've never felt pushed to buy the products there, though I do love the Deva line. And be sure to try some of the offered beverages!! read more

I'm black with 4c hair. My stylist was kind, handled my tight coils gently, educated me and clearly stated what she was using and why with each step. The final product and price for wash/deep condition/simple style was well worth it. The salon is tidy and aesthetically pleasing. I read other reviews regarding their handling of black hair but had little time or options to be more picky for a simple wash. It must come down to the stylist, I wish I remembered her name. She's was white, short/chin length dark wavy hair, slim and young. I hope that helps anyone interested in trying to book an appointment with her. read more

I am very disappointed with the services here. The first time I went over a year ago, I had to come back so that they could fix the colour that they didn't do well. It looked nice after my second visit, so I decided to try them again recently. This time, I paid for a cut and colour from the master stylist and reminded them that it didn't get light enough last time. The stylist began to cut my hair in the back and stopped to start bleaching. I assumed she decided to finish the cut after the colour. She waited until after she was done putting the bleach in to tell me that she was not going to bleach the ends because they would be fried. In other words, she waited until I couldn't say no before telling me she would not colour it the way I wanted. At the end, I asked if she would finish the cut and she said she already cut it. I was shocked because the whole left side of my head was untouched and there was hardly any hair on the floor. She reluctantly cut more but it was uneven and she was cutting too much in too few places, rather than trimming all over which is what I asked for. Lastly, her customer service was really poor. She covered my shirt in water and didn't give me a towel under the blow dryer--which took longer than the cut and colour combined. She didn't say much, but when she did speak it was to tell me how dried out my hair was, only saying this after she put bleach in it. I didn't feel comfortable at all and when I expressed my disappointment, she excused it by saying it was the lighting that made it look darker and that she didn't cut much because I only wanted a trim. I gave them another chance after they did not do well the first time, but it was much worse. read more

I wanted to like this salon - I really did. My sister and I bought tickets to their "Set It Free" curly hair event - live music, swag bags, wine and cheese. The time and effort they put into organizing it was evident. The food was great. There was a fun curly hair fashion show and interesting speakers. As soon as I my sister and I checked-in, we were approached by stylist Claudia. She offered curl assessments, and we were all over it. Claudia started with my sister's assessment. She disparaged her haircut a bit, which I thought was unnecessary, but predictable. Once my sister's assessment was complete, Claudia seemed to hesitate. My sister asked Claudia about my hair type, and she looked at me and said, "You have S'wavy hair." My sister, knowing my hair pain, pushed Claudia a little further and asked her what products I should use. At that point, Claudia reluctantly picked up a piece of my hair and said, "Well, it's heavily textured..." by which I'm sure she meant damaged. That is an accurate statement. I know my hair is damaged. But then Claudia continued to say, "...And it's filthy!" I'm a pretty tough bird, but that shocked me. I guarantee my hair was not filthy (or even dirty). And even if I had walked into the salon with bugs circling my head like Pig-Pen, there certainly was a better way to say that. I wrote the salon an e-mail explaining what happened and heard back from Jaclyn, their marketer. When we spoke on the phone, she did apologize for what happened but she went on to make a bunch of excuses. Jaclyn told me that Claudia was not a native speaker and had only been in the US for two years. I knew that. Claudia told us she was not a native speaker; and that she had been in the US for SIX years. Jaclyn also claimed that what Claudia had been attempting say was that my hair had product build-up, but there was plenty of body language (observed by both my sister and myself) that indicated otherwise. Jaclyn then continued to list off a host of other reasons why Claudia was behaving strangely - including personal information about Claudia's health that I will not repeat here out of respect for her privacy. Trust me, though, it was deeply inappropriate. Eventually, I got sick of this and asked Jaclyn what I could do for her. She responded by asking what she could do for me, but I was not about to ask her for something. I did not stage my complaint in an attempt to collect free haircuts. If she had some plan of making this right by buying me off, she needed to offer it - not make me ask. A nice place to start would have been offering to refund the 50 dollars I paid to be insulted (the cost of event tickets) or perhaps an offer to send me some shampoo for my filthy hair. Anyway, don't go there. They're not the only curly hair game in town. There are Deva Curl stylists at both Moxie and Salon Stella. read more

This past Wednesday was my first time embracing my curls. I usually go to salons where my stylist doesn't have curly hair and they deal with mine in the only way they know how, straightening it. On a recomendation from a friend I decided to try East 42nd Street Salon where they specialize in curls. I walked in super early and was asked if I wanted water or tea and settled in to read a Real Simple. Soon Sarah came and retrieved me and started dry cutting my hair. "Say what," i said, never having had my hair cut with out it being drenched first, Sarah then schooled me on the correct way to cut/care for curly hair. She was extremely knowledgeable and interesting. I didn't think the price for the cut was too outrageous considering all that I learned. I walked out with better looking and feeling hair. I love this salon. When I first moved to Minneapolis almost 2 years ago, I decided I finally wanted to learn about taking care of my curly hair. I was tired of it being frizzy, and I never again wanted to see that my hair had dried into this really stupid looking triangle. Straightening had taken its toll, and I was ready to go au naturel. The East 42nd Street Salon & Spa took me in and spit me out with the hair I was hoping for. At my first appointment, I blabbered on about the length and layers that I wanted. Before I could get out three sentences, I was basically told to quiet down and was instead asked questions about my hair, its tendencies, and what I did and did not like about it. Kyle (my stylist) took great effort to learn about my hair before he even asked me what I wanted. When I was finally allowed to tell him, he told me what would work for and against me and provided some suggestions. Flash forward to 1.5 years later and I'm still devoted to this place. My hair looks great, and I look forward to my curly cut every 4 months. In all honesty, I struggled on deciding whether to give this place 3 or 4 stars. Lately, I feel as though more of a "salesman" approach has begun and products and services are being pushed on me. Additionally, because my hair is more wavy than curly, and we have reached the point where I tend to know more about my hair than my hairstylist. That means I have to give him advice rather than vice versa - real shame when I'm paying him $45 to be the expert. HOWEVER, I rolled with 4 stars because my hair looks great and I have no plans to look for a new salon. I want to start off by saying that I am NOT that picky when it comes to my haircut. My so called "Master stylist", Theresa, did a horrendous job. I'm probably a little too trusting when it comes to my hair however I requested one thing: I did not want an asymmetrical haircut. I first walked in and it was in general a very cold atmosphere but I didn't really mind especially if they were going to do a good job. I met with Theresa and she asked me a few questions but nothing special. Then she kept cutting and would. not. stop. She never asked if it was okay during or after the process. In fact, she never even showed me the back of my hair. What did she end up doing? She gave me an asymmetrical haircut WITH BANGS. I am half African-American and half white so I have very curly hair. My bangs stick straight out and the actual cut looks like it should come straight out of a 90's movie. It's disgusting and I feel absolutely disgusting about myself and the way I look. It's horrible that I don't feel comfortable in my own skin because of East 42nd Street Salon. read more

Carolyn is amazing! I'm already well versed in how to deal with my curls, but I never took the next step to find a stylist that specialized in it. Carolyn carefully cuts each curl dry so I can see what the shape of my hair will be as she cuts it. No shrinkage here! She then paints highlights on each curl so we can see where the highlights will lie. They use special products specifically for curly hair, so my curls never frizz. Not only do strangers stop me to tell me how beautiful my curls are, they also complement me on how great the cut is! Carolyn is also a genius with up do's for my curls. I attend several black tie events and I rarely like my hair for them. Stop straightening and real curling my hair with a curling iron! Carolyn comes up with ideas that use and compliment my natural curls. And it's not the same do as every other woman there! I also really love getting my brows done there. Literally the best hair cut I've ever had. I have spent 25 years hating my hair. Loathing the SHIT out of my curls. Not until I found Kristy at East 42nd did I realize why. Because no one has ever actually known what the hell they were doing. I admit my hair can be overwhelming to someone who doesn't have curly hair themselves; it's unruly, frizzy, coarse, dry, & large and in charge. I've spent my life trying to rid myself of them... straightening every day, cutting it while straight and dry. Then I had two kids and didn't have the time to straighten my hair every day, and decided to embrace what my mama gave me. Kristy listened to exactly what I was looking for. I've been trying to grow my hair out after years of butchering it, so I asked for just a trim.. And that's exactly what I got; a trim. I didn't leave horrified that 5 inches had been taken off, and I didn't leave pissed that I couldn't tell any difference. I also got a full foil. It was like she was in my head... my hair came out looking EXACTLY like I pictured it. That just never happens, let's be real. I thought I knew how to take care of my curls (I even attended beauty school myself), but I was wrong. Kristy educated me on the best way to even wash my hair, what products to use and why they work best for my hair. I work somewhere I get a discount on the Deva Curl hair products, and she knew that, so she knew I wasn't going to buy product from her, but she educated me anyway regardless. She wasn't just trying to push sales on me. It sucks that a few people have had a bad experience in the past here, because it almost deterred me from even making the appointment here. But I'm glad I listened to my gut, because I left so freaking happy. Since moving back to Minneapolis I have been searching for a stylist with the right combination of skills and personality - and the ability to listen, ask the right questions and make gorgeousness happen. Thankfully East 42nd Street Salon specializes in curly hair. They use and promote Deva products (and process) - which I love. I have had four cuts here - and for the last two Rosie was the stylist. She has a great sense of humor, is a great listener, is really good at what she does and makes it seem effortless. I am growing out my hair, but I wanted to avoid that 'ugly' in-between stage so I took in pictures and Rosie listened to my wishes - resulting in an adorable cut both times. This isn't the salon I typically go to, but after my expedience today, I won't go back. I desperately needed a bang trim and was nearby, so i stopped in. No one was at the front desk to greet me and I ended up waiting about 3 minutes before someone finally asked if I needed help. I should have taken this as a sign, but I understand Saturdays can get busy. I asked for a bang trim and the woman that greeted me said she could do it for me. She seemed very unsure of herself. I told her I wanted it to be a softer, not as blunt. She didn't ask many questions, didn't tell me what she was doing. It felt like she kept cutting unnecessarily. I told her it was fine. Paid for it and left. Upon closer examination, there are TWO layers in my bangs. I am so disappointed and do not feel happy. I gave this place 2 tries. My first time there, the woman who did my color and cut was talented but struck me as kinda insane personality-wise. She kinda freaked me out. She said I was "awkward". Ouch. Second try, I scheduled with a different stylist - and the woman was very sweet - but she talked my ear off (in her defense her husband had passed away about 6 months prior and I could tell she was still in a lot of pain so I tried to listen and be very understanding). I got home and noticed my hair was about 2 inches longer on one side of my head then it was on the other. I debated and debated with myself but finally called the next day to see if I could get it fixed. The stylist squeezed me in that afternoon to "fix" it. She denied anything was wrong with it and said the cut was supposed to be "asymmetrical". Um, lady, it was so bad my coworkers noticed! So instead of argue with her, I decided not to go back. As a new yelp reviewer I tend to only review things I like and this salon is one of them. I really enjoyed all three times I have been to this Salon. My first visit was for the once a year Kerry haircut. And while I will admit I have straight brown hair which I am not emotionally attached to so it is pretty hard for a hairdresser to screw it up, I was extremely happy with the results! The entire salon was so friendly an accommodating - why yes I would love green tea while I wait - my personal hairdresser was just beyond great. (But really I love any hairdresser who doesn't get all preachy about how bad my spilt ends and self-trimmed bangs are.) Also, the salon turned me on to my new favorite hair product line called Avines, which is also animal friendly so my cat approves as well. Since I only cut my hair once a year (so bad I know) the other times I have gone to Salon 42nd were for a manicure, pedicure, and eyebrow waxing. Each time I left happy and satisfied with all of the results. As a 17 year old, mixed race girl, it's taken me a long time to love and accept my hair for what it is, and recently I've learned to love it and I WAS in love with my hair... until today when I asked my stylist to just even my hair out because the back was shorter than the front. Instead I got it chopped, my hair has never been shorter than my shoulders and now it barely touches my neck. I resisted tears in the salon but once I got home i couldn't stop, the big mane of hair I had just learned to love was gone and with it my confidence. After, she didn't even ask if I liked it or if it was okay... I'm guessing she knew it wasn't. Hair grows and it's not the end of the world but now I have to learn to love my hair all over again... If I wanted this cut I could've gone to fantastic sams. I'm hurt by my experience at twisted hare salon, but I will say if you're white and have non- coarse curls then this salon will probably be okay for you. No. Nonnonono. I feel like a crazy person with all of the amazing reviews, but I HATED my experience here. I'll start off with the good: my cut is great. I just needed a trim, but it was my first dry cut (I have wavy hair) and it was very nice. That's where the good ends. I wanted to get my hair dyed. I have been going to salons to get my hair dyed for years (and years and years...) so I am always VERY thorough in explaining my hair type and what I want. It felt like my stylist barely asked me any questions about the color I wanted. I mentioned, before she applied the color, that my roots tend to grab color in a brighter way than the rest of my hair. She acknowledge that, thought about changing the color mix, but decided against it. Now, my appointment was scheduled from 1-3:30. It took until just before 4pm for the stylist to finish (keep in mind my hair is shoulder length and the color was an all over color, so no foiling or anything too time consuming) because she was working on two other people during that time. I get that it's smart to have lots of clients, but I was moved from chair to chair, made to wait because there were no open dryers, etc. As my hair was drying, the stylist assured me that my roots would be fine. "I really covered my butt on this one!" she laughed. It was just before 4pm, then, when my hair was styled and finally dry, and I saw that my roots were, no joke, red-violet...and my hair was a brown-auburn color. Even the stylist acknowledged how bright the roots were. She offered to try to tone it down; I asked how long it would take, and she said another HOUR. Y'all, it was 4pm on a Sunday. I had already spent almost 3 hours there...I honestly had errands to run, a puppy to walk, and a family to feed. AND I didn't really trust her to fix it when it looked SO horrible. I do acknowledge that she did offer to fix it, which is good. But still, when I went to the register (thinking GETMEOUTOFHERE) and found out that it would cost just under $200????? I have never been so regretful in my life about making a hair appointment. Better off NOT coming here if you want any color. read more

Should I wait 24 hours to review a beauty salon? Yes. Am I going to? Carolyn is the shit. I came here for a deva cut, because I was sick and tired of my curly hair looking like a well used sham-wow. Just like Sam says, this woman takes care of you. I had 3 spectators hovering around while she dry cut my hair. She discussed what annoys me about my curls and what my end goal is. Even though my hair is fine and will hit a breaking point in my quest to grow longer, she didn't try to talk me out of it. Carolyn asked me specific questions during the entire process and talked to me about what I have done to my hair versus what I should be doing to it. I've had my hair trimmed before while growing it out, but this cut takes the cake. Carolyn is a professional and definitely goes the distance to make her clients comfortable and happy. Her colleagues were also very friendly and helpful (cups of water, tea, etc) and the woman who washed my hair took me through an entire tutorial about how to care for curly hair in the shower. I went in for a haircut and had to wait ten minutes past my scheduled appointment before someone even asked if I needed help. Then I told my stylist that I wanted a trim and touch up. She asked if I had layers or wanted to add some to help style my hair, I said no. After about an hour I walked out with all new hair, uneven cuts, full of product, and layers which I said no to. I was so dissatisfied. It was the worst cut of my life. My Master Barber Boyfriend did a better job cutting my hair then the women I had here. Not only that but my hair cut is full of weird pieces that are too short, bad angles, and it has an awful shape. She filled my hair with this disgusting goo that made it untouchable after my appointment. Theresa is THE BEST with curly hair. She has cut my hair three times now, and every time I leave satisfied. One time, I changed my mind about what type of cut I wanted mid appointment and she was very patient and accommodating. The salon is very cute and clean, the receptionist always offers a great selection of tea, and they sell DevaCare products (along with others, I'm sure). Excellent hair care for curly girls. They do cut the hair curly, so if you usually wear your curls straight, this probably isn't the place for you. But, Ericka gives excellent cut and coloring service. And they are part of the Deva curl salon system. read more

I want to begin by saying that I'm giving this salon 5 stars even though I left with one of the worst haircuts I have ever gotten in my life (worse than the days when I used to go to Fantastic Sams as a kid for $10.00). They receive 5 stars in my book because of their kindness and professionalism in addressing my concerns; I have had a great experience here before and won't let one terrible cut ruin it for me, especially because they have been very attentive in helping me make a plan to come back to have my cut fixed by a better stylist. I truly appreciate this. They definitely care about their customers and this is shows. I would just advise anyone to avoid making an appointment with Claudia. I didn't have a very good experience- I left looking very frumpy and one side of my hair is noticeably longer than the other (and I certainly didn't ask for an asymmetrical cut!). What worked well: the process to make an appointment worked great = prompt response, clear communication, and easy to get an appointment without booking weeks in advance easy access great to see all of the curly heads in the salon - I can see why there were so many positive reviews - the hair care education was excellent - I learned a new way to care for my hair, and my curls are nice and soft. What didn't work at all: I was excited to experience the relaxing visit I read about on the salon website and in the hundreds of positive reviews I saw online. Unfortunately, my experience didn't match up with what I read. I arrived right on time and was welcomed at the front desk, eventually, but was told they couldn't find my appointment in the system. I verified the appointment time and stylist, and discovered my appt had been booked under a different last name, Sometimes little things make a big impression: About that welcoming cup of tea promised on the website? It was never mentioned or offered the entire time I was there, even though I asked about the great selection of Tea Source teas on display. the closest I got to a hot cuppa was to be repeatedly seated under a hair dryer next to somebody else's dirty tea cup. Yuck. I completed the clipboard questionnaire, and waited to see who to hand it back to - "oh, just set it on the counter". OK, fine, I get it - busy Saturday with lots going on. That busy-ness seemed to be a continual distraction for Teresa (salon owner) throughout the afternoon - this had a negative impact on my overall experience and the outcome of my hairstyle. I didn't see where the questionnaire I filled out was ever referenced - it seems like it was solely for marketing purposes, instead of a communication tool for client and stylist. I was invited to take a seat in a stylist's chair and the first comment I heard was "so you want to color your hair?". Um - can we back up a minute? I know you do cuts all day long so this is old hat to you, but this was my first visit and I've never met you before. What's your name and who are you? Please introduce yourself and explain what we're about to do, so I can understand where we're headed and what your role is. It was an unnerving way to start my appointment (again, a miss in terms of a relaxing, personalized salon visit). After an explanation of the DevaCurl cutting philosophy and a discussion of what brought me to the salon (great salon reviews, working with curly hair and multiple bad cuts, wanting to keep my curls but make them more business-friendly), Teresa began to cut the back of my hair super short. taking at least 3 inches off - GULP!, leaving blunted 2" chunks of partial curls. Fast forward = at the end of my visit, post-styling - Teresa made this comment - "Would you consider wearing your hair longer so the curls could make complete turns?". My heart just sank - WHY did you cut my curls so short if you knew length was necessary to keep the curl, which I said was my goal in the first place? I love my curls, but now half of them are gone. And the s'wavy pieces I explained were so problematic for me? Those pieces were left long, also very blunted, and they just stick out as if I'd cut my own hair with a pair of kid scissors. I do understand that cutting the curls individually optimizes their shape, but I was left with no overall hairstyle - just a jumble of blunt hair chunks and pieces. I clearly explained my need to use fragrance free products due to severe reactions in my family, as well as my own sensitivit. However, when it came time to style my hair, the citrus scent of the MopTop Curling Custard was pungent. When I re-stated that I needed fragrance free products, I was disdainfully schooled on the difference between "chemical and natural" fragrances - it was rude, and my request was ignored. I had to wash the product out of my hair as soon as I got home, and I still had a skin reaction. This was a Haircut FAIL, even straight out of the salon. Without lots of bobby pins to manage the hot mess that is now my hair "style", I was embarrassed to leave the house. As it is, it can't grow back fast enough, and I'm afraid I'll have to add this salon to my list of Expensive and Disappointing Hair Cuts. This was my first visit to the salon - I sent the above feedback directly to the salon FIRST and am only just now posting this many months later - but it is clear this was a canned response from an unidentified person: "It is always our goal to give our client a great experience at our salon. Reading your review it is disheartening that this experience was not a good one. What could we do to get you to come back and give us another try?" I sent them a reply - and never heard back. I guess that tells me how much they wanted another chance to make it right. NEVER again - one of the most disappointing and expensive salon visits I've ever had. read more

Teresa was great! Listened to what I wanted and taught me how to style my hair. I will definitely go back.
