I have seen so many amazing individuals feel ostracized by the typical classroom environment. My biggest fear in enrolling my daughter in school was that it would hamper her joy of learning. Instead, it has had the opposite effect. I feel this is due to intentional practices that Baypoint has in place, as well as genuine warmth and welcome from the educators. They understand that each child is an individual, welcome parent communication and (at least in our home) have amplified my daughter's joy of learning. The athletes, academic team, musicians, introverts, extroverts, are lauded in the same way. Everyone is valued. Every teacher is unique- in personality, skill set, mannerisms which helps to serve the diverse student body. It is a comfortable space for anyone to fit in or create their own space. Innovation, ideas, perspectives are encouraged. There is no right approach to learning. There is no wrong approach. It is truly a learning environment. Students are accountable with clear direction and expectations, tutors and counselors are always available, and goals, hurdles, requirements are defined well ahead. As students work to achieve those goals, materials is presented in many ways, with many formats, to allow for students with different learning styles and capabilities to succeed. So far, all teachers have been excellent or mostly very good. One teacher of Beginning Spanish had teaching methods that did not work for my shyer son. I attend school events and make a point to speak with each teacher. Some teachers are clearly outstanding!! Their dedication to teaching is admirable. They are creative, and find ways to stay motivated. As you know, it's not easy being a high school student, and it's also not easy teaching them. The new principal, Dr. Clevenger, is so friendly. My kids love him because he walks around at lunch, says hi and is fun. I respect and admire the talented Field hockey coaches that have interacted so positively with my kids during this 2019 field hockey season. All the office staff seem to be amazing. During my attendance office visits & phone calls, they are always organized and kind. The front office is staffed with experienced people who know the answers and are also friendly. My kids' & my interactions with outdoor staff have been positive too. There are men & women who maintain school operations and facilities. They seem to do a fine job keeping students safe, drop-off/pick-up organization, etc. A staff member kindly helped my kid get her "lost" hockey bag from a locked classroom. My family is happy with RBV!

Now that my kids have graduated…read more.. Background: We switched from the charter system at the high school level. We were running out of classes to take/electives, we were having to volunteer to the point where between extra curriculars and homework, we were down to 2-3 hours of sleep per night. Running around sleep deprived with lack of support from the school. Add on top of that there was a whole lot of politics/parent drama being dragged onto campus and I could see that kids were turning inward in survival mode instead of growing/thriving. You can probably read in my other review (of a charter) that we went to a public school and they helped us come up with a plan in under 10 minutes for two students. That was RBV. And yes, their counseling department was/is fantastic. They answered our questions even without an appointment. Any time we needed support, they were always there and went the extra mile. When we did a school tour, we watched the senior class president speak with poise and confidence. That was a HUGE difference between the charter kids and the public school kids. I pointed at him and told my kids that they needed to go from mousey to that guy by graduation. So was it worth it? It depends. Were there more electives? YES!! Even shop class. The kids made a lot of great memories finding out who they are, while contributing to the community through their classes. Were the science classes as good? Depends. Chemistry, no. They didn't do a lot of hands on which was majorly disappointing (they really need to shore up this part of the curriculum), but they had these awesome elective science classes that made learning interesting and fun. The environment was far more competitive then collaborative (with the exception of track and cross country, those were great experiences). Did my kids gain confidence that we were looking for and learn to stand up for themselves? Yes. Getting the parents out of the way and getting them involved in clubs made a huge difference. There were also great teachers along the way that were awesome mentors for both of my kids. And what didn't work for them taught them to either advocate for a solution or change what you are doing to go try something else. That lesson will carry them for life. RBV is a public school and you have to set your expectations. You are going to have everything from the driven kids to the knuckleheads who just want to goof off. Are kids probably going to make fun of yours by saying stupid stuff like any other public school? Yes. Are kids doing sketchy things in the bathroom? Yes, it's public school. We got that in charter school too. That's high school for you. Is it safe? Average. The first day of school, the other kids were cool and told mine where the escape points were on campus should there be an active shooter (see other Yelp reviews, that all happened before we made the change). It stinks that it's the world we live in but it is good to know that the kids were nice enough to share how to stay safe with students that they just met. The only thing we missed with the charter is that they had a partnership with the junior college. Before we left the charter, we had signed up for a summer class (due to lack of electives). It turns out to do that at public school and put it on your transcript is a BIG DEAL with Vista Unified. You have to ask permission, go through a long process, etc. "We should have asked permission," blah, blah, blah. Long story short, it was on their transcript by graduation but if you want to dual enroll, it's not easy at RBV. Not impossible (and even discouraged) but not easy. If your kid wants to do primarily dual enrollment, go the charter route. Also the awareness of what it takes to get into college was better at the charter level. Since the school owned more of the every day educational responsibilities, it allowed me (parent) to go find the information for the kids, reach out to colleges, ask them for advice, schedule tours, etc. RBV had all sorts of colleges come to campus (and the military) and allow students to ask questions. So that's good. But if your kids don't know what to ask, well that's where are a parent, you help connect the dots. The lesson I learned that I want to share with every other parent is kids grow at their own rate. It is our job to give them options, opportunity to try things and figure out what they are about while this stuff is free. You don't have to burn yourself out or them out while doing it. You know your kid. You know what they need. If they need a lot of options, RBV is a good fit. If they need more parents involvement, independent study/flexibility in learning/curriculum, or dual enrollment, then by all means go the route of the charter school. High school and college have one thing in common. The name alone means nothing, it's about finding your best fit. There is more than one option, more than one teaching style. Do what is right for your situation.

This is our neighborhood school and I am outraged. Our kindergarten son was beaten to a concussion…read morewithin the first 60 days after the school year while a student there. Courageously, he named the two children whom he said beat him and pushed him to down (during which he hit his head), he named an adult that was on duty whom my son claimed told the two children to stop and not to harm him any more, and he told his teacher, AND our son provided a consistent account of the assault to my husband and I, his primary doctor, and the concussion specialist. We'd already informed the school when our son sustained minor injuries in a restroom while children tried to bust in on him in a restroom talk to see his (to keep it PC) " brown genitals. He was teased because of his hair, his skin color, and more. We provided this information to the administration too. Nothing substantial was done. So when it escalated to this, it should have been simple to resolve and we should have received support for our son instead of being treated as if our son was the aggressor. The other two children who were named as those who hurt our son weren't harmed or in any danger at any time. Asking them "did they do it" as if kids don't lie wasn't even an uttered thought when it came to them, yet OUR SON was questioned and indirectly invalidated by the alleged notion that there was no footage of the matter--not to mention the alerting of child protective services after we let the school know that he'd had a concussion --that report was not filed when we first mentioned the incident to the school despite his bruises and our complaints! Yet, somehow school admin. claimed the only video footage they only saw of him that day was him coming into the office (after being prompted to wait there during pickup when his teacher "randomly" left earlier than usual that day). . . Still, no one seemed to notice the bruises on his face (black eyes) and the bumps and burn-like bruises on the back of his close-shaven head (it was hot that day). I am a graduate of this district from the 90's so my evaluation of the district, its history, and demographics are accurate and well-informed. Nobody knows anything, allegedly as they claim. The entire matter is dangerous and disheartening! All in all, the entire matter seems skin-color related (as we are all of the HUMAN RACE, right) retaliation given the admin. had been informed of what happened to our oldest and dared to allow similar treatment to our Kinder son in this way without extending true care and concern in our favor as the injured party. Out of 4 children, the only child I have that hasn't been assaulted in this district is my pre-K son who doesn't attend school in the district. I have material evidence to prove all claims made here, so I accept nothing but an apology for their potential negligence and I will continue to tell our story until our son receives the Justice and equal care he earned!
