The school offers challenging academics, AP and honors classes, and an array of sports, drama and musical activities, band, choir, student government, etc. I'm confident our son will be well prepared for college, as every year I see Calvin's graduating class has nearly 100 percent college rate. Our son has experienced unique learning opportunities such as meeting WW 2 veterans and Holocaust survivors. There are opportunities for domestic and international travel, career days, guidance through college prep and testing, community service to the under privileged. My son has traveled out of state with his music group (at no additional expense to us paid for by school fundraising) he's done performing arts in the annual Musical production, had vocal coaching, played in band concerts. He's participated cross country and track. Several reviews made reference to a Dutch "issue." True, the school was founded by Dutch immigrants and still has a Dutch heritage. We are not Dutch and have been fine at Calvin. My niece and nephew aren't Dutch, in fact their mother is an immigrant, now US citizen. They excelled at Calvin. There are a number of international students at Calvin who are not Dutch or Caucasian. They seem to integrate well into the Calvin community. In fact our niece became close friends with a student from South Korea and traveled there after graduation. We live 45 minutes away from the school and gladly drive our son to Calvin. We work hard and sacrifice to pay tuition and it's well worth it. What Calvin offers cannot be found in a public school. The academic quality combined with outstanding teachers and strong parental involvement in a Christian environment make Calvin a unique gem. We're so happy we found this school

Let me start off with, they are not lenient about attendance whatsoever. I was a student who showed up everyday on time and had an A in the class. I came in one day right on time and that was met with sly remarks and chats to the whole classroom of the importance of being on time. Mind you we had clinical at 6:45am. God forbid a student showed up 5 minutes late to class, Christine Vinson is putting you on the spot and talking to you outside of the classroom about it. 30 minutes late? You're making up 2 hours. I've told a plethora of people about my experience and a lot of them had the same response.. what is it a military bootcamp? Exactly my thoughts. Not to mention the amount of times she's made remarks of being tired of teaching and our classroom of 12 students was way too many for her. The most she's ever had. And the constant reminders of her power to drop us at any time and we wouldn't be getting a refund. Our class was very respectful, we were all adults. We never interrupted, we spoke when spoken to, yet she was always cranky. Her teaching style is harsh. A lot of students were on edge around her. There were a few students in the classroom where English wasn't their first language and she had no patience with them and made them very uncomfortable. One of the girls that I spoke to had said that she want home crying every week. The way she taught us the skills were very discouraging, her attitude was affecting our ability and desire to learn. She questioned my desire to be in nursing, not once but twice. I thought my presence of showing up every day on time and passing the class with an A had shown that I did really want to be there. I had an off day and that wasn't met with compassion, it was met with hostility. I asked to stay behind during clinical one day to study, because Christine had told us that would be an option for us all at least once. I was questioned about if I really wanted to be there and if I could handle nursing. I ended up getting a "write up" and told I was being insubordinate, although that wasn't true, because I listened to what she had told me to do. I talked to one of the student services people who also mentioned that maybe some people are under the impression that I didn't really want to be there because I didn't pay out of pocket for the program, because I had a scholarship. Discrimination. He also had mentioned how Christine Vinson has dropped people in the beginning, middle, and end of the course. If I could go back in time I would have chose a different school. The only reason I am giving a 2-Star instead of a 1-Star rating is because the Assistant Principal Sara Kende offered me a refund in the end for the program and I appreciate her for that.

My only concern is that I wish the school had more AP courses and more clubs on campus that focused more on professional development on different career paths, rather than just the general classes or academic achievement clubs. One of the best things at Esco was spots, and especially football. The stadium is absolutely beautiful. It makes football being such a pleasure to watch! Not only did we as students were able to watch home games there, but the stadium was great enough to host CIF football playoffs. On top of that, graduation didn't need to be held off campus, and was able to be right on the field. Very proud to be a cougar.

There are some older and good professors, but most of the newer professors are all UC rejects who seek a tenured position at this school and care very little about students once they tenured. The chair of the department, Jancovich is a lost cause. Now, I am starting to understand why the department of education is being dismantled. You get people who sits on their butt with 6 figured salaries and not actually helping students. The chair used to be Dr Escobar and he was ok. But now it's Jancovich and he will find ways to push students away. His emails will always say " there's nothing he can do" I mean that should be his life quote of sort. Pretty useless. If you're planning to major in biol, go to UCSD. Even if it means staying at the comm college a bit longer. Or a different school, don't come here it's a complete joke. This is coming from me, a current student who had to deal with it and eventually changed my major to biochemistry. The two more organized departments are the chemistry and computer science departments. The chemistry depart is organized, and the computer science department is very solid. Though not everyone want to major in it because of the amount of math that students have to take. Other than that, nobody cares especially if you're a biology major. I changed my major to biochemistry because of how unsupportive and disorganized the biology department is.

It's dirty looking with outdated buildings, without a parking lot for parents or visitors. My wife and I had issues with the second grade teacher Ms. J. She would scream at the children and make fun of my daughter's face because of the way she rose her hand (she said she thought my daughter had a medical condition) how condescending. When brought to the principal who looks just like Pitbull he didn't think it was enough to switch to a different teacher because my daughter would not speak up. My daughter was terribly afraid of that teacher and did not want to suffer any consequences from her. We decided it was not a place to get a proper education at it's minimum and enrolled at a private school. They did not respect our daughter's feelings. Also it feels like you're in downtown L.A. with allowing cars with loud music and loud bass to drive through there. I mean how horrible is that?!! It's an elementary school! They need a police officer to be parked there when school starts and when school is dismissed. That's it. Bad school.
