Hawaiian shaved ice is a beautiful, fluffy experience that has a wonderful effect on your tongue...Snow cones are coarse, crunchy crap that you get at second rate fairs... Tutu's is the only place I've been to that still does Hawaiian shaved the way it's supposed to...Light, fluffy and HUGE...They don't skimp on the syrup either...If I can recommend a flavor, I'd have to go with blackberry...Experiment...Play around... The Dole whip is also a wonderful palate cleanser that is just amazing...Whipped pineapple soft serve is probably the best way to describe it, but I would say the best way to know it is to experience it... They also have ice cream brought in from Hawaii... Being that I was stationed in Hawaii and I trolled around to get as fat as possible before I returned to the states, I must say that Hawaiian ice cream is super rich compared to their mainland counterparts...White chocolate, coconut and macadamia nuts? Decided to get ourselves a nice treat this weekend since we were out this way. Big Banner announcing new ownership. In this case, not necessarily a good thing. Our scoops of ice cream were alot smaller than the previous time (maybe they were overly generous the first time I went?) my cone tasted off, but by that time we were in out car on our merry way. - I ate the ice cream out of the inside and tossed the cone Also towards the bottom of my cone the ice cream got very very icy. My ice cream partner in crime was fine with his cone (he got a sugar cone, I didn't) and said his ice cream wasn't icy. Maybe it was just an off day, but with these prices, we aren't anxious to return based on this experience. read more

Simi Valley isn't really known for unique dining experiences. But I don't know many places in Southern California that offer Hawaiian Shaved Ice. Tutu's is one of the few joints I've heard of that does. It's located, like most restaurants in Simi, in a shopping center. Their funny looking yellow mini Ice Cream truck is parked out front, something to check out when you're walking in. Inside it's not that fantastic, the floors needed to be mopped, but they had plenty of tables, and a wall with photos of people who took the timed challenge, eating an entire cake pan of shave ice (or I think you can do ice cream). They serve ice cream, and dole whip too. I think they also sell popcorn and some other things. You can mix and match, you could get shave ice on the bottom of your ice cream, or whatever you want really. There was hardly a line, and although it took a little bit to get our actually ice, the service was fine. I think they were training some new folks that day also. I decided to go for blackberry flavored shaved ice. My boyfriend go the Hawaiian Punch flavor. The small bowl is $2.75. Now I don't remember how much shaved ice is in Hawaii, but frankly I'm not sure if shaving some ice and putting syrup on it is really worth $2.75. It was definitely tasty and incredibly refreshing on a hot day. I think next time I'll order a flavor that's not as sweet. Like I said, worth it for dessert if you're in Simi! The Hawaiian Gods sent this little shop to Simi to satisfy my island craving. If you've never had Hawaiian Shaved Ice, please do not confuse it with the mainland's "snow cone". This ice melts in your mouth, it is soft and fluffy, and topped with tropical flavors. Right in the center is a scoop of ice cream. Once you get to this center, the flavors all mix into one, and your taste buds will never forget the moment. My favorite is Tigers Blood (which is coconut and fruit punch), with vanilla. But there's plenty of other flavors of syrup and ice cream you can choose, including condensed milk. If you want to share, Tutu will give you an 'extra large' size, and it's about the size of a human head, no joke. All this for less than $5. The decor is Hawaiian kitsch, complete with a refrigerator full of Hawaiian Sun drinks. Until I make it to Matsumoto's on the North Shore, Tutu's will do just fine! EDIT: TUTU'S JUST GOT PINEAPPLE DOLE WHIP!!!!!!!!!!! I wish I could add a star for this alone. I have never found Dole Whip outside of Hawaii and Disneyland. This place is fantastic. I took the wife and kids to check it out after I met the owner at a business networking function. The shave ice (notice, I said shave ice, not "shaved" ice) was awesome. This is not a snow cone joint, but something really special. The kids both got shave ice with scoops of ice cream on the bottom. My wife got "the crater" and I stole dozens of bites... it was awesome. Hands down, the best for me was the Dole pineapple whip. I loved it. I will be going back for more... frequently... *UPDATE: BUSINESS IS CLOSED I was eating dinner next door to Tutu's and knew something was up when I overheard patrons at the neighboring tables say they were all 'going next door for dessert'. No one ordered dessert from the place I was eating at! If you've never had Hawaiian Shaved Ice before, you're missing out. It is NOT a hard, icy packed snow cone where the juice all drains to the bottom and you're crunching past an inch and a half of ice before gettin' to the good stuff. This stuff is soft, fluffy and a scoop of ice cream sits waiting for you at the bottom. There are lots of flavors syrups (for the shaved ice portion ) and ice cream to choose from. I'd suggest getting citrus/tropical flavors for the syrups and something basic like vanilla or coconut for the ice cream. Reason being, that once they start melting together, the ice cream will help bland out the sweeter syrups in the shaved ice, like a 50-50 Ice Cream Bar. The Tiger's Blood syrup (Coconut and Fruit Punch) is the most popular and best tasting IMHO. My wife tried it once with Cotton Candy Ice cream and they whole thing was too sweet! And then my cousin tried it with Coffee Ice Cream - and let's just say having citrus flavors melting into java ice cream isn't the most appetizing combination. My favorite combo: blackberry, orange-cream, tiger's blood with coconut ice cream (which they make on site). Also try their popcorn with caramel on top - a surprisingly delicious combo that you wouldn't necessarily think goes together. Service is a tad slow since it's usually the one lady/owner working behind the counter: shaving the ice, scooping the ice cream, taking the orders AND working the register - but you're in a Hawaiian Tropical setting with palm trees painted on the walls and you're waiting to get your ice cream creation - where else do you gotta be? This ice cream place is out of the way in Simi Valley. They have both shaved ice and ice cream. Ice Cream: They serve Cascade ice cream (from Oregon not Hawaii), they do not make their own ice cream at all. Cascade ice cream is very good and quite comparable with the Thrifty ice cream available at Rite Aid. They have a good variety of flavors, probably 25 or so. Shaved ice: They do shave ice, they do not use crushed ice like in snow cones. The flavored syrups they use are quite conventional and unlike what is available in select Hawaiian shaved ice locations, do not have unusual flavors like red bean. They do have a remarkable variety of flavors for the shaved ice. Overall I was disappointed in the quality, no homemade ice cream or flavors for the shave ice but I have to fully agree with the other reviewers who nearly universally remarked about how friendly and helpful the staff of this family owned ice cream shop were. This is a great place- quite a selection of ice cream, all with a home-made taste. I couldn't begin to name a favorite flavor here. The atmosphere is casual and super-friendly, they definitely want repeat business. And I will go back whenever I am nearby. Recently I moved (away from Simi Valley) and a double-dip waffle cone was my reward at the end. I'll have to try the shaved ice sometime, I saw them in production and they look incredible. 2 words: DOLE WHIP!!!! If you have never tried Dole Whip, go now and try it. If you love Dole Whip, go now and get some. Recently went to Disneyland and the line for Dole Whip was as long as a ride. Then I remembered Tutu's has Dole Whip and I was ok. Pineapple Upside Down Cake ice cream. Scrumptious. I was given a sample of that with my Dole Whip and I knew I had to come back. So I went back 2 days later and got that craving taken care of. I haven't tried the Hawaiian Shave Ice yet, but that is next on my list. They also have coffee which is supposed to be awesome as well. It is a welcoming truly Authentic Hawaiian Shaved Ice Shop and doesn't serve lackluster ice cream or impostor snow cones (the difference is eating frozen rocks vs. cold cotton candy. big difference.) The shaved ice is light and under new management the store has added even more flavors to the menu for syrupy goodness. The atmosphere is very welcoming with a beautiful mural and friendly staff. If you've never been you should try the Dole whip. My favorite is the pineapple kind that is only served in Disneyland or Hawaii, and now Tutu's and it has no dairy and is very low fat and extra delicious. The ice cream is Lappert's gourmet and the place has so much variety it's hard to chose. By far the best ice cream around and the perfect place to go on low cost date on those summer nights. The new management is great at keeping us fans updated and has done a lot to update the place and bring in some more people who don't know of the greatness. Not too long after my first experience at Tutu's, I spent many an afternoon with Scott and his mobile version of the the business. In fact, I assisted him a few times at various events around town. Absolutely LOVE TUTU's Mobile shave ice. I first was introduced to them at my son's baseball field for opening ceremonies and I have been hooked ever since. They have a ton of great flavors to choose from. My favorite is Tiger's blood! So yummy. They actually use a real ice block to make the shaved ice. It is super cool to watch them go to work and make your creation. My kids always ask to get one when we see the stand set up anywhere. I've seen him serve Dole Whip & Funnel Cakes, but when I was at a recent church event in Simi and he brought out the "50/50 bar" flavor for my shave ice (He said he was keeping it hidden for certain customers), it took me back to when I was a kid chasing down the ice cream truck! So I've been going to Tutu's for a while now and it was my favorite dessert place in Simi but I'm afraid since it's changed hands I'm no longer a fan. I agree that the place looks cleaner and the new owner is a lot friendlier but the quality took a hit. The new owner decided is was too difficult to get Lappert's ice cream and that was one of the main reasons I loved the placed. He's now got Alta Dena ice cream which is probably why one reviewer below found it to be icy. Also, he's messed with the flavors. I'm not sure where the previous owner was getting her shave ice flavorings but banana tasted like banana and passion fruit like passion fruit. I ordered the same thing I've gotten the last 5 times and it didn't taste like anything and the ice cream on the bottom was not very creamy (besides being a smaller scoop). The new owner says he's mixing his own flavorings and while the wedding cake/red apple sample he gave out wasn't too bad, I've been going there to get shave ice Hawaiian style. Part of the charm is listening to Iz strum Somewhere Over the Rainbow on the uke while eating tropical flavored super fine shave ice on creamy Lappert's ice cream. It brings back found memories of vacations on the islands. That brings me to my last complaint. The ice was not super fine. Granted the previous owner had some misses at the beginning so this may be something that gets better over time or maybe the new owner just needs to sharpen the blades more often read more

Walking into Tutu's is a breath of fresh air. My husband used to live on the Islands and loves the ice cream and sherbets. I can not pass up on her shaved ice. No one can do shaved ice like Tutu. I enjoy going here for the dole whip and recently, shaved ice. When I told the owner I never tried the "snowcones" he gave me a sample and I was hooked.
