So this one is your typical one where you pick which size you want (the larger the size, the more scoops of protein you get). Then you pick your base (salad, brown rice, white rice or a mix). Then you pick all your toppings, sauces and condiments. The difference with this one is that they only serve sustainable fish and the wasabamole (guacamole mixed with wasabi). The wasabamole was awesome!!! It is a must try there. Overall, this place was good. The fish was fresh however it was a bit expensive for the amount of fish you got. Flavors were awesome. I'd heard great things, but I knew when Buzzfeed x Yelp named Turtle Boat THE restaurant to try in Colorado this year, I needed to give it a try STAT. This restaurant opened on South Broadway in March of last year and does their spin on "Colorado poke." Their menu is simple yet special, with fun little add ons, toppings, and salads. The gentleman behind the counter walked me through the full menu, which was awesome because I learned a few things I wouldn't of known. ALL THE THINGS: + These guys use the Monterey Bay Aquarium Watch to make sure all of their seafood is sustainably sourced. They even have a striped bass on the menu that's from a sustainable farm here in Colorado! I tried that + the tako (octopus). + Speaking of local, their mixed greens base is grown at Rebel Farm, right here in Denver! + You get *unlimited* mix ins and toppings!! Can I get a hell yeah?! Enoki, fried garlic, nori dust, roasted coconut...give it all to me. + Lots and lots of vegan + gluten free options! At a poke place, you ask? Heck yeah. They've got tempeh, tofu, and alma (their own soy-free creation of ancient grains) for vegan proteins, as well as vegan masago (fish roe) and lots of other vegan/gf sides. + The salads are *so* good. You get two salads with a regular bowl and DON'T YOU DARE leave without getting the wasab'amole, aka their trademark wasabi guac. I came here the other day with my friend because we have heard such great things, and boy were my expectations exceeded. I loved my poke with all the different toppings and sauces and fresh fish. I got tuna and salmon in mine with siracha mayo. SO GOOD, could definitely taste the freshness of the fish. I got the wasabi guac and seaweed salad to mix in my bowl as well and it was awesome, not too spicy but just enough with other great flavors! Also the prices are great! I got 2 proteins and 2 salads - seems like 2 sushi rolls or more - for a little over 11 dollars! When my friend and I came, the staff was so unbelievably friendly. They walked us through how we were suppose to pick out our meals and told us their recommendations. They also gave us nori to make little sushi rolls, it was so nice of them and so yummy! It pains me to say this but my issues kinda feels like the elephant in the room. Turtle Boat is an awesome poke option. Local products, sustainable , fresh....commendable! Side salads....krab, seaweed - delicious. I always get just about every mix in and topping. Perhaps that is my mistake. It's delicious all together but it is difficult to taste what should be the star of the poke bowl - the protein. Also, we came for an early dinner on a Saturday. They were out of Barramundi and Kanpachi which happened on our last visit. I know it is better to offer the freshest possible ingredients, but I have struck out twice on two separate occasions at different times and days. I'll chalk that up to my bad luck. The protein portions are small. I could elect to back off the mix ins and toppings but don't imagine it making too much of a difference. The beauty of poke should be the simplicity of ingredients. More protein would definitely help. It seems like the current price point could support a more generous portion of proteins. As usual, service was friendly. Great Vegan options. Still a great place to have a Colorado style poke bowl. This place is super rad. Being a vegan I am so happy that this place exists. They have a ton of vegan options and it's super delicious. I've been to other poke bowl places that cannot even tell me what is and is not vegan. :( Sad. I usually get tofu/tempeh and alll the vegan mix-ins. All of the side dishes that I have are freakin' awesome so I can never decide what to get. It feels good to have options. Thanks for lookin' out for your vegan homies. Turtle Boat is such a great addition to SoBo. I've been here a couple of times now and the staff has always been tremendously helpful and welcoming. I love that they source fish locally, and let you load up on fix-ins with the "full boat" option. I have gotten the Snack size and it is plenty, but the Regular is a great option if you want to try multiple kinds of fish. I've had a range of ingredients, and the only thing I didn't like was the mixed greens. It was just too bizarre of a texture and flavor for my liking, and reminded me of seaweed. Unfortunately I did not take any pictures, but this place is the real deal! Two brothers and two other employees were working last Friday evening. They started by explaining the menu, step by step. They help you build the best Poké meal ever. All their ingredients are locally sourced including some of their fish. The price was very fair. One Brother is the Chef and another Brotha is the Business dude. The only drawback is they do not serve alcoholic beverages, which are a must after a long day at work! I took my meal home to have a little sake. They do have a cooler full of locally sourced beverages. One definite bonus for me.....they require masks to enter. Way to play it safe.....from a Healthcare Worker! Those MF's got Science. They have a parking lot in the back. They have primarily outdoor seating, but have a small bar inside with 3 seats. So imagine poke meets Chipotle when you walk in. Your food is put together as you tell them what you want. Good to know thing is that they use only sustainable fish on their menu. Way cool in my book because I try to buy sustainable fish only when I'm shopping for it. They also had local bass on the menu. So, pick your protein, then mix-ins, sauce, and salads, then you're good to go. All of it is listed on the menu board. I like the idea a lot. They also offer a base of white rice, brown, or mixed greens. I opted for the brown rice. Sadly, I found some of it to be hard, so I think they need to perfect their brown rice cooking method. The fish seemed to be good, though I felt like there wasn't that much of it (got the regular portion) so I don't know if I truly have a good enough idea. I also thought the pieces were cut a bit small for my liking (maybe another reason I didn't feel like there was much). I feel I have had better poke made at home or hah, from a random Safeway in Maui for $5, though not sure it's fair to compare. Tons of fresh and locally-sourced ingredients, including some of the fish. I had a salad with mixed greens, ahi, and striped bass (local from Colorado). Added 'the full boat' (all of the available mix-ins, mostly veggies), topped with a delicious vinaigrette and some nori dust. I added a side of glass noodle salad and crab salad. All were delicious and totally fresh. If you're super hungry, go for the large size. Some may think it's a little on the pricey side, but you pay for what you get here- really great ingredients. I was very curious to see how this place would compare to what I had in California. Two things stuck out: 1) here, I was able to customize while there they just prepared and handed it over; 2) the tuna pieces here were microscopic in comparison to what I got in CA for the same price. The tricky thing about making your own is that if you're not familiar then it's hard to know what to put in it. The guy working there (probably the owner) was really good at explaining everything and recommending how we should have it prepared. It was a fun concept and experience. In the future, I think I'd just tell him to throw everything in there to save time. The bowl itself had nice flavor and good mix of ingredients. My disappointment comes with the protein portion as I would like that to be the highlight of my bowl and not the other ingredients. After all, it's called a poke bowl and not a salad or seaweed bowl. TB is a small, hole-in-the-wall joint that has a coastal vibe. We were met with terrific customer service and detailed explanations of what we were ordering. This was helpful because it was our first Poke experience and it's a unique style of food serving. The food was fresh, but was a little too earthy for me. We each got the small "snack" size and it was plenty of food for both of us. There isn't a ton of seating/parking, so it's recommended that you get it to go. Mixed greens, yuzu vinaigrette, customer service - these three things made my experience! I loved the addition of basil in the mixed greens - it added a pop of flavor that I was not expecting! There was also this other vegetable, it was a stem of some sort, crispy and reminds of water spinach (ong choy). Either way, both were unique and refreshing adds that I have not had at other places. The yuzu vinaigrette was also very flavorful. Turtle Boat definitely didn't skimp on the yuzu. Big plus was the service. The person who made my order was friendly and even politely told me that I can add as many mix-ins as I would like for no extra charge!
