Mama Flo's

Mama Flo's

Stockport

Mama Flo's is a nice little neighbourhood restaurant serving Jamaican cuisine. I've been meaning to…read morepop in for a while because I'm missing my regular jerk chicken fix at Buzzrocks. There's only a few tables to dine in but it's open till 9.30pm which is great. There are some (inadvertently) hilarious thank you letters from school children on the wall: my personal favourite says "Your beef batty is tasty." I tried a saltfish fritter for the first time which had a perfect mix of crispy batter and soft filling, would recommend it. The jerk chicken was very different from what I am used to at Buzzrocks. The sauce at Buzzrocks is very thick and in fact solidifies when you put it in the fridge (i.e. the secret to its deliciousness is that it's basically just fat). At Mama Flo's the sauce is thin liquid. It's got a good spicy favour but I miss the indulgent richness. Also although it's more expensive there was less chicken, it was a little dry and the rice and peas were a bit overcooked (fluffy). Unfortunately for me they were out of plaintain so I'll have to pop to try it and maybe sample one of the other dishes - at Buzzrocks I was never very adventurous about trying to the curry or fried chicken etc because the jerk sauce was so addictive but here I will keep sampling the full menu! Carrot cake was ok but a bit dry and was not the best icing.

Amazing place this. Food is plentiful and well priced. Service is a genuine joy. Will certainly be…read morecalling in again.

In all honesty when you're as white as pint of Tippex and come from the foetid marshes of the land…read morethat culture forgot (Essex) then upon hearing the radio advert for Maureen's ("West Yorkshire's Headquarters for Caribbean food") you may find yourself compelled bodily to take part in its delights. Don't fight it. Give in to the pull. It's small, it's basic and it's not going to win any glamous location awards but STUFF that, the food is UNBELIEVABLY GOOD. Where to even begin....just do what I did when I lived nearby, go every week until you've eaten everything on the menu, even the cow's feet (I aint kidding). Wash it all down with Guiness punch and then top it off with the only reasonable thing to have after a plate of glorious, flavourful, fresh Caribbean food.........a giant slab of homemade, hot, sweet sponge pudding smothered in an orgasm of thick creamy custard. I am physically salivating at the thought........I have to go. TAXI!!!!!!!!!!!!!! p.s if you are lucky you'll go when Maureen is singing her hymns at the top of her rich, warm voice........I wonder if she realises she's already in heaven? Spicy, filling, creamy, delicious heaven.

It's an informal, casual style cafe with a buzzing atmosphere and the staff have that warmth that makes you feel welcome everytime. The banter with the regulars can be hilarious too providing a free soap opera style enterainment. When I got the bill the first time around my mouth was wide open & the lady asked if it was too much! Her reply was gorgeous - "Dem locals wot cum in dis place don't like no 'spensive prices lady" and she gave me a big grin. I always leave a tip but noted the regulars don't lol! Today i had akee and saltfish and in the past i've had curried goat, mutton and naturally the wonderful rice and peas or dumplings - I also love fried plantains. There are always newspapers to read and lots of smiley faces, so with the great food to fill you up for next to nothing it's a great place to meet for lunch, especially when you are on a budget. Thank you Maureens! xc

Jamaican cuisine is one of my absolute favourites so when I moved to this area I was delighted to…read morefind Raggas nearby. When you walk in to Raggas it initially appears quite small. Until recently, this was indeed the case... but they've since added extra seating upstairs fixing this problem, so you should have no worries! When you get the menu you'll notice everything you could want from a Jamaican restaurant - Jerk Chicken, Goat Curry (though I think this is mutton now), Ackee and Saltfish, Festivals, Dumplings, Plantain... the list could go on and on. It's got everything you could want! When it arrives it's all very nice indeed and you get some great rice and peas to go along with the meals. I believe that the food is prepared in massive quantities in the morning and then heated up when you order. Some people are fine with this, some are very against it. I would suggest you at least take a chance to try it though. As I live nearby I often get a takeaway from here. My only problem with this is that the place is very popular so they often run out of certain things you might be after. This would be fine, but they don't tell you this until you go to pick it up, giving you no chance to change your order. Despite this it's an fine place to grab a quick bite or a big meal and everybody should check it out. My advice would be to eat in though, at least at first.

As soon as you enter you sense the community feel, the place is always full of people chatting, eating and enjoying themselves and it is a real feelgood place. As well as the atmosphere this place has the food, it is excellent and they really know what they are doing. I have to admit I am not an expert on this type of food but it does not take an expert to taste the quality of flava at d'flava. The place is run by a Jamaican and you can tell by the authenticity of the food.It sounds obvious but try the jerk chicken with some rice and a nice refreshing drink and you will feel as though your soaking up the sun in the west indies which is exactly what you want to feel with this type of food. I like my restaurants to be friendly and have good food so for me d'flava is heaven and I like the name.

I was therefore upset at my experience despite the promising set up of the place and the tantalising offers. I get the impression that D'Flava is more of an evening place - at least I hope so as it was empty when I arrived - as the decks near the bar and liquor behind the bar hint at a lively evening set up. However when I made my order, the young girl behind the counter clearly spoke no English and instantly set my alarm bells about my order but it gave me time to look over the menu and the specials board - I really want to know to what sexy juice is but I thought now was not the time and place to try this or the Guiness punch! Just as I anticipated the order was completely wrong nonetheless I was heading towards town and the melting pot area of Wavertree/Kennsington now that my craving for Jamaican food had been ignited...
