An absolute gem of a restaurant in Ulverston, bringing tapas and excellent Portuguese wine to the…read moretown. Booking is highly recommended as there's limited seating but they'll do their best to squeeze you in if they can. As we were visiting over the Another Fine Fest weekend - all dedicated to Stan Laurel - we booked at least a week in advance for the four of us. Service was warm from the moment we stepped through the door and continued throughout the evening; the small space means you might feel slightly awkward stood in the doorway but someone will come and find you! The menu is split into sharer boards / vegetarian / fish & seafood / meat so it's easy to navigate and choose your dishes. There's also a taster menu available if there's more than four of you but you don't get control over the dishes. After some deliberation - and advice from the waitress - we decided to share the pulled pork; pork belly with crackling; potatoes with saffron aioli; beetroot & goats cheese small board; roasted cauliflower with almonds; large cured meat platter; hummus & flatbread; plaice; wood pigeon; and feta & courgette fritters. As usual with tapas restaurants, everything came once ready, so we had a steady stream of food arriving to the table and empty plates being taken away. Stand outs included the plaice (I'm an infrequent fish eater but could have had the whole dish to myself), roasted cauliflower - it's not easy to make cauliflower exciting - and the cured meat platter. Washed down with a bottle of vinho verde, the whole experience was excellent from start to finish. Ulverston is lucky to have L'al Churrasco and I'm sure its popularity will simply grow from here.

However, don't come here thinking you're going to be paying tapas bar prices as this place is very much a special occasion destination. As you'd figure from the name, the owners have spent some time creating a wonderful ambience here with stunning red drapes hanging low over a very rustic scene. The menu choice is outstanding, with tapas classics taken to a new level of sophistication without disrupting the original flavours too much. Mains (or raciones) include my personal favourites Conejo Basco (braised rabbit) and Pollo Tournado (with paprika and Chorizo fondue, melted Manchego cheese and sherry cream, £15.95). Washed down with a Long Island Iced Tea, I felt like I was floating when I left here. Definitely a great restaurant if you're looking for romance or dressing to impress.

Even Google maps wasn't having it but when we did find it, it is well worth it. It's a small restaurant that is quite dark inside. There is a simple yet effective tapas menu with all the usual dishes and a few different ones to tempt you. For me, Spanish food done well is something we are lacking in the City Centre. This is a bit of a trek but well worth a visit. My favourite dishes were the calamari (soft and tender with a light batter), chilli bread (toasted with just the right amount of chilli to heat your mouth without blowing your socks off) and meatballs (soft and juicy with a good amount of sauce for dipping when you have nearly finished). I think it might be my favourite Spanish in this country so far...

They're located in the town of Whitefield in Greater Manchester, a short walk away from the Metrolink stop; there is also parking at the rear of the restaurant, although it is quite tight, so I would advise using the tram if you can. I have wanted to dine here for a while now, having heard great things about their gluten-free offerings. The restaurant is well trained on allergens, with gluten-free options labelled on the menu, I also overheard the servers asking diners when being seated, as I was, about any allergies. It is a little expensive here, but no more than any other tapas restaurant. I couldn't find a lunch tapas offer on the menu, which many other similar restaurants do. However, this might be because I visited on a Saturday, or perhaps because it's close to Christmas and they're busy anyway. There is a "Party menu" offer to get two tapas and a side dish for £24, although depending on the dishes, it may very well be cheaper just to buy them individually. The restaurant is very large and very busy, and I sat upstairs, I was very impressed with the quality of food and service despite how busy the restaurant was. My server, Kian, was great. I ended up ordering four tapas dishes to eat personally. 1. MEATBALLS Minced Beef, Tomato Sauce, Grated Manchego The meatballs were really tasty; I ended up getting them without the manchego cheese, the portion size was good with four large meatballs and a generous helping of sauce. 2. CHORIZO IN RED WINE - Chorizo, Red Wine, Honey, Caramelised Onions, Crispy Shallots I wasn't a huge fan of the chorizo; it had some nice flavours, but I did find the onions and shallots to be a little too much. 3. CHICKEN & CHORIZO SKILLET Marinated Chicken Breast, Diced Chorizo, Peppers, Onions Optional: Add Fajita Wraps, Aioli, Pico de Gallo & Cheese The chicken was very tasty, and I enjoyed the peppers and onions, it felt like the ideal kit for making a fajita or just for having straight out of the skillet. I was given the GF fajita kit despite not asking for it, but I did find the chicken tasty, again the chorizo was just OK. 4. PATATAS BRAVAS Crispy Potatoes, Tomato Sauce, option to add Aioli This might have been my favourite dish; the potatoes were the right mix of soft and crispy, and the sauces were great, I could eat a bucket of them for sure! For drinks, I went for the Blackberry Sangria, which is a new addition to their menu for Christmas, I enjoyed this, too, it was fresh, tasty and had the right combination of alcohol, it was certainly some of the best sangria I've had, and beats many places from my recent trip to Barcelona for sure. As I made my server aware we were celebrating my birthday, he brought over a small plate of ice cream, with "Happy Birthday" written in sugar, which was a really nice touch. He mentioned how they would normally include a brownie, but they were out of stock of the gluten-free option due to it being popular. There is a service charge added to the bill, I have a hatred for service charges but on this occasion, I felt we couldn't remove it because of how good the service was. My server clarified it is shared amongst the team - so at least the restaurant doesn't try and pocket it. The loyalty system also seems to get around 5% back of your spend to use for next-time, save your code on the receipt! 4*- I had a great time here with great food, drinks and service, I would certainly return, a strong four-star rating for sure!
