The crowd started gathering to pick up their food when I was waiting so I figured I was at the right place to get good food. One of the gentlemen waiting asked me if I had eaten there before and I told him it was my first time and he said it was really good. And he was not lying. We also ordered cheese dip, which I requested because it is not on the menu online. So good. Large chunks of beef and fresh toppings. The cheese dip has the right amount of spice and they give you a huge container of it. One serving would have been good enough for sharing but I am not sharing anything! The online menu states an order of tostados is two and I received four. There were a little messy but only because they were packed full of toppings. I am glad this is close to my home.

We made sure that the hours were correct, made sure they had food, and made sure that it would be appetizing for us. On our way here, I felt like I had taken a wrong turn on multiple occasions. Just turns out that it feels like you are going the wrong way until you come upon the plaza. Had to double check we were in the right place. Pulled up, parked, and walked in. What we were met with was not restaurant in nature. It was more of a store in transition with seating. As soon as we walked in we noticed the table in the one corner being used as a trash heap. Cardboard boxes broken down and stacked upon one another. So many, you couldn't go in that area. We also thought we entered here during their closed hours as there was no one in here, or so we thought. No customers and it looked like no employees. That was until someone came from behind the counter with a mouth full of food. We did a quick look around and pretended to be interested in the coolers before we left out. It did not smell as if food was being prepared in here. It almost came off as a convenience store than a place to grab what sounded like some pretty good food.

I almost always get the Wake Up Burrito, which is loaded and satisfying, but I've heard great things about the breakfast sando, chilaquiles, and pancakes from friends too. The space has a cool, artistic vibe, the staff is welcoming, and it's the kind of place you want to linger at with a second cup of coffee. Whether you're a local or visiting, put this on your list!

I went to Foko after hearing nonstop hype about it being one of the absolute best breakfast spots…read morein Louisville. The place is positioned as this incredible Mexican breakfast destination, so I figured it had to be something special. Turns out it's just standard Mexican food and drinks. Even if they were using using "the freshest most highest quality ingredients", it doesn't show in the final product at all. Heres what i got: The Espresso Martini ($14) was actually decent--nice and foamy with a solid chocolate note. The Carajillo ($8), on the other hand, was weak. It tasted like plain iced coffee with zero detectable alcohol. I wouldn't order it again. The Wake Up Burrito $14: their biggest hype item. I got it and added chorizo for $3.50, bringing the total to nearly $17.50. It's sausage, cheese, eggs, and beans wrapped up--pretty good, but nothing groundbreaking. Without their green sauce it's completely average, no different from any regular breakfast burrito at a diner. The green sauce itself is what really the only saving grace, but they serve it in tiny thimble-size portions like they're guarding some secret recipe. So for $18 you get a medium-size burrito plus a couple of fried tortillas with cheese on the side. Compare that to mexican spot like Bandito, where the burritos are twice the size and cost much less. This one is seriously overrated. The Chilaquiles - I got the side order of these with the burrito, and were average at best. Just fried tortillas with cheese and a little sauce that had a slightly sour edge. Not bad, but nothing I'd call amazing. I thought to myself, if these had egg and beans(what the main dish has) , would I have been glad to pay $17? The answer is no. Ive had better at the airport. Bottom line: Foko is incredibly overrated. It feels like a tourist trap built for people for those Luisville people who who don't eat much Mexican food and think this is the pinnacle. I get it, the decor is nice and gives that "premium" feel but the prices are way too high for what you actually get. I won't be back.

We then moved onto the cochinita and the mushroom based tortilla. The cochinita was a good sized serving topped with an orange sauce. I enjoyed it pretty thoroughly and it was a pleasant surprise. My wife had the mushroom tortilla dish which the mushrooms themselves were good, but we noticed the tortilla felt as if it wasn't cooked all the way through and had a doughy taste to it still. The tortilla may have been too thick but either way it was slightly off putting. To drink we split a Jamaica with mint which was delicious and hydrating. It was mainly a mint leaf that added the slight mint flavor so it didn't over power the hibiscus. Would highly recommend. For a desert we had a Mexican tiramisu which was overall a great end to the overall food. Only negative was the mandarins slice on the top of the dessert was very tart which clashed with the sweetness of the dessert. The ambiance was decent and had low light setting which was nice, we personally did not like how close together the seats were as it made it seem like the just wanted to cram as many people into the area to maximize profits. Would be nice to have a bit more space. Speaking of profit, I do believe the dishes were solid but I truthfully don't think the prices are worth it. I understand the farm fresh is a huge part of it, but when you're selling 3 tacos for 25$ it's clear there's a specific group of people this is geared towards in addition to the part of town. This is the main reason I am giving it a 4/5. The service was exemplary and our server was on time, very polite and was amazing at giving recommendations. She was the one that recommended the starter. Overall would come here sporadically or for special occasions but would not make it a regular occurrence due to pricing.

It could just be mediocre pub food, but the food here is very, very good. I don't know why, but when I'm in the south, I get the hankering for a deviled egg. So we started with the deviled eggs (Los Huevos El Diablo), which, despite the name, were not super spicy. They had just the right amount of spice. One thing to know about me is: If I see a patty melt on the menu, I will order that. So I got the Merle's Melt, which is a burger patty with cheddar and Monterey jack cheese, plus bacon and special sauce on buttered toast. It was sublimely tasty! It comes with house-made chips, which were good. They also offer tacos on the menu. One of my children got one steak taco and one chicken taco. The tacos are topped with tomato, lettuce and cojita cheese. I was told that these were very good! My kid eats like a bird, but ate one and a half tacos, so that must say something, right? The Lip Smack'n Mac & Cheese was also ordered, as well as the fried chicken, because the menu says that the fried chicken is award-winning, so how could we not? The fried chicken was super crispy and tasty, and the mac and cheese was creamy and made with large shells, which is the best kind of pasta to use for mac and cheese (in my opinion). The service was great, the lighting was great, and we were seated quickly, even though they seemed busy. It was a good place to have a family dinner in Louisville.

The service was incredible from start to finish--friendly, attentive, and genuinely welcoming. The staff really know their menu and make great recommendations, especially when it comes to their massive bourbon selection. They have over 100 bourbons to choose from, making it the perfect spot to sample some of Kentucky's best while you eat. And the food...wow. Some of the most delicious comfort food you'll find anywhere. The authentic Kentucky fried chicken is a must-order--crispy, flavorful, and cooked perfectly. Every dish we tried felt like elevated Southern comfort food done right. Between the amazing service, incredible food, and unbeatable bourbon selection, Merle's is a must-visit when you're in Louisville. Easily a six-star experience.
