Tucson Asphalt - Poor Communication and Hidden Costs
I recently hired Tucson Asphalt to seal coat a road I had put in, approximately a quarter of a mile long and 12 feet wide. Initially, they quoted me a reasonable price of approximately $0.33 per square foot. However, my experience took a turn for the worse as the project progressed.
On the day of the job, my neighbor asked to have an additional 1,400 square feet in front of their gate seal coated and crack sealed. I spoke with a supervisor named Kevin Siegfried, who agreed to do this extra work, mentioning that I would be billed for materials like crack seal, which sounded fair to me. No contract was signed for this extra work.
Everything seemed to go well initially, and they completed the job in one day. However, they ran out of materials and had to return to Tucson to get more--a detail that becomes important later.
One month after the job was completed, I received an invoice that charged me $1.00 per square foot for the additional 1,400 square feet, which was three times the initial rate. I tried reaching Kevin for an explanation, but he never returned my calls. I eventually spoke with a very kind and professional secretary who assured me she would look into it and have Kevin call me back, but he never did. She later expressed surprise that he had not returned my call and mentioned that this issue had been raised in their meetings multiple times.
The company explained via email that the increased charge was due to the smaller area being charged at a higher rate per square footage. This was never communicated to me upfront. Additionally, they charged me for bringing equipment down from Tucson, even though they had to make a second trip due to their poor planning and not bringing enough materials initially.
My major issues with Tucson Asphalt are:
1. Poor customer service: It's a huge problem when you can't get a hold of a supervisor and they won't return your calls.
2. Lack of transparency: They should have informed me about the higher charge for the smaller area and the extra cost for bringing equipment from Tucson upfront.
I have served as a fire captain for 33 years and understand the importance of good customer service. This experience with Tucson Asphalt has been disappointing and unprofessional. Be very wary of their billing practices, as they may include hidden costs that are not stated initially. I will be using another company for future projects. read more
