Great experience! Stopped by here prior to a Broadway show and enjoyed 6 courses. Food was absolutely delicious and we did not end up feeling overly full in the end. Service was good especially since it was a very busy place with just 2 servers. Cozy place.

Sake, shochu menu. Big fan of the Kenbishi Kuromatsu, a honjozo.

This is a small little place with a quaint very at-home atmosphere when it comes to the food outside of the nice presentation. The very large majority of people were speaking Japanese (presumably post-work people,) and the female server was very friendly. They do a 6 course changing Omakase menu here for 60$ (with no tipping as with many other traditional Japanese places) which changes and the food overall is light though if you are hungry, you can add an extra course for 10$ (and/or a dessert for 7$.) For a drink, I went with the Kenbishi Kuromatsu which is a dry and rich honjozo with a bit of sweetness and it's one of my favorites. It's $14 here and they give a generous sized pour and I would recommend it. As the courses change and there's no menu description, it'll be listed as course number/name and then the approximate dish description with the little review below 1. Today's Appetizer: Vegetables (I believe cucumber) This was cucumber I believe and there was a bit of sesame . This was a very light dish with some crunch and essentially an amuse-bouche in terms of what it was doing. 2. Seasonal Vegetable: Chilled Tofu with Vegetables I believe I heard chilled tofu so this would be a type of Hiyayakko I believe. There were slivered carrots as well as onions and it was well presented with the edible flowers. This dish had a very pleasant texture and it was quite delicious. 3.Selected Sashimi- Flying Fish and Scallop The sashimi which I believe I heard was flying fish and scallops (which would make sense from the images) was excellent. The scallop was firm and with light sweetness and the flying fish presented two ways had a wonderful texture. Excellent dish. 4. Today's Special Dish: Sesame Agedashi Tofu with Brussels Sprouts This was a rather unique take on your normal fried tofu/agedashi tofu as it was sesame (Goma) tofu instead. I'm personally not a big fan of agedashi tofu but the sesame added an extra flavor and it made it quite tastier than usual. There was also some pieces of Brussels Sprouts which added an extra texture and some more flavor. 5. Seasonal Cooked Fish: Grilled Mackerel with Grated Daikon and Soy Sauce The mackerel in question was well prepared lacking any oiliness with a good firm texture. The flavor was nice with the grated daikon adding an extra component. 6. Today's Meat Dish: Pork Shumai Wrapped in Rice and Japanese Potato Salad. The shumai was rather unique for a Japanese place; reminding me more of what Shanghainese places do (though they wrap in sticky rice instead) while the potato salad was the usual for Japanese places. This dish was fine. The waitress offered me a menu afterwards with extra dishes. After thinking of ordering curry or ramen, I went with: Ochazuke with Spiced Cod Roe Ochazuke is a soup made with tea and dashi poured over rice and it's one of my favorites. Their topping offerings for said soup was pickled plum/umeboshi, salmon, or spiced code roe/mentaiko. I went with the latter as I have never had mentaiko with this dish. The mentaiko added a rather unique texture with an unexpected graininess to the soup with a pleasant fishy flavor. I think I prefer umeboshi as the texture threw me off slightly but I was happy to try something a bit more unique. Overall, it was a good dish as well and it satiated my appetite. From the dessert section, I asked what the daily cake was and she noted the other selection was a panna cotta which I wasn't interested in. For $85 (or 60 without anything extra,) there are certainly dinner options which would fill you up more but if you're looking for an authentic home-cooked style Japanese meal, there's not much better around this neighborhood. I can see why they were crowded.and I look forward coming back here to try some of their new offerings. Mid/upper 4.

Overall, a decent spot with homey Japanese food. The best things we had that night was the asparagus and pork soup. However, even those I felt like you could've gotten similar quantities in a konbini in Japan, but I suppose we're not in Japan. For a $66 set course, I was expecting either larger portions or more fitness in the food. All three of us left the restaurant feeling hungry and not satisfied.

The best izakaya in newyork ever! Most authentic one definitely, and the chef really nice too!

The best place to come for dinner with kids in NYC. Their Omakase is just so delicious and perfect volume and price. They have fried rice and Udon noodles for kids. Edamame and Tamagoyaki are perfect for kids too. High chairs and kids utensils are fantastic. The waitress and the master is superb. Highly recommended.

I'm hungry...it's late. I don't want diner food...know where do I find me some late-night ramen? Oh, I know Tsukushi has late night ramen starting at 10/1030p. We got there just before 10p. They technically said they didn't start serving ramen until 1030p, but that it'd be okay. My friend and I both ordered the ramen, and it hit the spot. It was delicious, the broth was far from bland. It wasn't served scalding hot. It was about $10...which is actually less the than usual bowl at Hide-Chan, Ippudo or Totto, but I think it might actually be a slightly smaller portion yet still filling. The place is very unassuming, there's no name or real store front. There's an awning with an address and a wooden door. It made me feel like I might've been entering a dungeon or something of the like. The place is small, quaint and clean. TLDR: check out their late-night ramen

I have walked past this unassuming door many times but had no idea there was a Japanese restaurant. There is no sign, just a plain black door. So find that black door, open another door and you will be welcome to a small Japanese restaurant. I came here really late, around midnight, when their ramen was available. I sat at the bar. They have a nice collection of Japanese sakes, but I decided to have a kirin. They have a simple menu that had items such as fried rice, ramen etc. They also have an omakase menu but I did not tried that. Most of the guests here were all Japanese, so it felt like Japan. I decided to go for the ramen. The portion aren't huge but it was good enough for a late night snack. They do take credit cards.

Katsu-Hama is about two doors to the Left of Phil's, and has minimal, very discreet signage. I got some tonkatsu...I forget the exact type, but it was essentially the most fatty of the tonkatsu offered. It came with cabbage (with a sesame ginger type dressing), daikon radish (with some type of sauce on top), and the standard sauce for the tonkatsu, along with some crushed sesame seed and hot mustard. I'd have to say...the tonkatsu was quite good....not quite as sublime as my favorite tonkatsu place in Tokyo...but still, very, very good. The dish also came with a bowl of miso soup (good, and not overly salty) and a bowl of white rice, which I considered the most disappointing part of the meal. The rice seemed a bit dried out...not moist.... All in all, an excellent meal. I'd definitely come back.

The food was ok, felt comparable to something you would order at a food court, so at the price point, it's not that worth it. The main was so unremarkable that the best thing was the miso soup. In terms of flavor, it's very much like "that's it??", pretty basic but wouldn't standout as good.

(There's regular tables on the right hand side and a bar in the back.) The food and drink menu is available through QR codes at the table. We selected 6 dishes and 3 desserts to share. The Ankimo came with three pieces of monkfish liver and scallions in a ponzu wasabi sauce. It was a nice start to the meal, with its creamy texture and rich flavor. The Age Tofu came with three cubes of fried tofu that had a slightly chewy exterior and a pillowy soft interior. The bonito flakes and dashi broth gave it a punch of flavor. It was my first time ever having Mentaiko Pasta, and I thoroughly enjoyed it. It was creamy and the spiciness of the cod roe sauce was subtle--it kind of creeps up on you after a few bites and gives the dish a little kick. I felt like the cod roe flavor shone through, and the bacon added another dimension to it. The Hotate Carpaccio came with 6 slices of Hokkaido scallops, ikura, and a mustard soy dressing. It was a delicate dish that I enjoyed, especially after the heavier Mentaiko. The Cold Soba Green Tea was my favorite dish. It was so refreshing. All the ingredients went very well together--the green tea noodles had a good bite, the salmon sashimi was very fresh, the ikura added a nice brininess when you pop them, and the dashi broth provided a nice backdrop to the dish. The sashimi in the Kaisen Don was fresh, and came with salmon, tuna, yellowtail, octopus, and ikura. The dessert menu is found at the end of the drinks menu. We got one of each dessert: the sweet potato balls with hojicha ice cream, cheesecake with yuzu sorbet, and black sesame ice cream with red beans. The sweet potato balls were SOOO GOOD--crispy exterior and chewy interior, with just the right touch of sweetness. The hojicha ice cream was so good. We regret not having ordered an extra set of the sweet potato balls. The cheesecake was a little dry, but had these little rice crispies on top that gave a nice textural change. The yuzu sorbet was a good palate cleanser. The black sesame ice cream was rich and creamy, and the red bean sauce added an extra layer of sweetness. Sozai is a great place to share a few dishes. I definitely want to come back to check out the lunch specials.

The tuna from the bone is the most famous dish here, but I was not able to get it as they sell out very fast. But I tried the sashimi and it was high quality -- just that it was not enough food for me. But that makes it more in line with portions back in Japan. The atmosphere really transports you straight into Japan if that is something you are looking for. Expect to pay a premium for small-ish portions, but at the same time very well-made and authentic food.
