We came through Long Beach airport last week with my MIL's ashes. I tried to hand them to an officer and explain what I had and requested a hand check. They looked at me like they had no idea what I was talking about. One officer yelled to the other one , Whatever you do don't open it. The person at the front of the line was rude. Then I went through the scanner another officer patted me down for having on a long expensive sweater, a present from my daughter. Her response was, next time don't wear that. First time ever having a rude YOUNG tsa person at Long Beach airport. I was standing in line pre check two tsa checking folks in. I was next and she shoes me to the other tsa person. Not sure why but this tsa was having issues with the guest she was Assisting meanwhile the tsa who told me to go to that line took 4 other guest so I asked can I just comeback to your line SHE SAID NO!! I was first to arrive this morning in the TSA Pre-check line. The female employee who was in front was slumped over the podium, looking tired. I had to ask twice if she needed my ID, boarding pass, or both. After getting an answer, the rest of the process was pretty normal and very quick. While LAX is under major construction, this airport is getting more attention, and there is already a large crowd building up in the waiting area at 5 am. this morning. read more

It is really difficult to like TSA, but I feel like we all forget... they are just trying to do their job to ensure us our safety. These rules sound dumb sometimes but they exist for a reason!! SOME DUMB IDIOT fucked it up for the rest of the population!!!!!!!! and not to mention all of the psychos and terrorists... I see some people get so crazy mad at these poor TSA people, and yeah I know some of them can be cold, but they didn't make up these rules!!! I was an idiot during my flight from LGB to SFO and for whatever reason I had my wine opener in my backpack... I surrendered the it a nd they didn't give me a hard time or anything. The security was even like, ohh a wine opener is okay... but my wine opener had a knife in it... MY BAD!!!!! Sorry... I felt like an idiot... They were actually really nice about it and they told me it's okay and since I surrendered the item it's no harm no foul. And to make it worse... my purse got rejected too because there was a water bottle in it!! At that point I felt so troublesome I wouldn't even blame them if they took me to interrogation!!! Lol. But they just resent my stuff thru that x-ray machine again and let me go... Ohhhhh!! And airports are high tech with their TSA stuff now. I've heard some pretty bad things about TSA in recent years, but I haven't seen what I've been hearing. About six months ago, I went through SW at the Long Beach Airport and was treated with the utmost respect. Today, 6/22/23 I had to meet someone at the arrival gate. Got my gate pass and went to the screening by TSA. I recently had a titanium implant in my lower back. I showed my ID and the implant card as I rolled through with my walker and cane. The gentleman had me remove everything from my pockets, and told me to leave my shoes on. Since I couldn't lift my arms above my head, he performed a very non-intrusive respectful pat down. He explained what he was going to do before he did it. The whole process took maybe 4 minutes. When he finished he said have a good day. And I returned the greeting and thanked him. Kudos to the gentleman with TSA!! You get 5!stars from me today!!! read more

Autistic Male here. The TSA is a disgrace. The scanner thing is oversensitive and detected something in my back and right arm despite zero piercings, jewelery, and surgical implants. I had to be severely patted down for no reason including the groin and buttocks while the guy in front of me didn't even bother to take off his shoes and walked out scot free. Out of all the times I've been through this airport, the TSA checkpoint is always the worst part. First the TSA person checking your ID against your ticket seems to be way too into their job, especially when flashing a light at your passport, looking at the photo, and then looking at your face. The stares are particularly intense if you have a different hair style than you did when your photo for the passport was taken.....that's real fun. Then, get up to the part where you place all your belongings into a bin. You have to stand there with the bin and push it onto the moving part of the scanner tabletop because if you don't push it right up to the scanner, the TSA people will yell at you telling you to push your stuff through. Isn't that their job?! To assist with getting everyone's stuff through the scanner? Why do they constantly yell at travelers? Now with the body scanner - I cannot with the rudeness of the TSA people when directing traffic through this machine. They scan you, then make you wait standing there until they wave you through and wave in the next person. If you don't move on cue (AKA the TSA person waving at you), they get irritated and start yelling again! They do not honor those of us who have payed for and gone through the extra steps for the TSA pre-check. There is NO TSA pre-check here. There is a sign, yet the lane is closed and they make you go through the main line where they are herding people as cattle. There is a reason people don't like the TSA and this place is a prime example! read more

This was THE most hilarious thing that has ever happened to me at an airport. I get "randomly selected" for a more thorough screening by some big wig security adviser to the airport (I'm just assuming). This girl (who I swear must have just graduated high school), escorts me into a clear cubicle in the middle of the screening area (very professional). She pulls out a stick with a little clamp on the end and puts what looks like a wet-nap from a BBQ joint on the end (seriously) and proceeds to wipe the handle of my carry on bag with it. She has a very stern look on her face (that she likely learned from her training videos). I ask, "What are you looking for?" and she just ignores me. I then tell her this is stupid. She didn't like that very much, but she let me go when her wet nap failed to identify BBQ sauce residue. TSA is a joke. Gawd. read more

I want to be upfront that the TSA agents we encountered were just fine. They did their job as they should and were even friendly. The two stars for the TSA are for their POLICY, NOT THEIR PEOPLE. Here's what happened: My wife and I scheduled a trip. We were also in the process of changing her last name. We rolled the dice and put my wife's new name on the ticket. Well, in typical government fashion from the SSA, the DMV, the Passport office, etc., we did not get any requisite ID material in time. SO, we went on the TSA website to see what to do and we found that we should be able to bring a marriage certificate and we should be fine. Fast forward to the day of our trip. My wife goes to the gate, shows her ID, shows her marriage certificate, shows the temporary DMV slip for her name and ends up getting pulled aside. 3 agents and a supervisor later, we are told that she cannot go through. We explain that we have all these materials that show her name change. LEGAL documents given to us by LEGAL government entities. Our marriage certificate is notarized, the DMV slip is officially signed and my wife's license (even with her maiden name) is still valid. We were told the legal marriage certificate and the legal DMV slip were not valid. HOWEVER, we were told that if we had a random piece of mail with her new name on it that would be fine. Here are the issues. 1. The TSA website said to bring the marriage certificate. 2. Why in God's name would we bring a RANDOM piece of mail with her name on it? 3. If the marriage certificate and the DMV slip were not valid, then what's the point of even getting them? 3a. The DMV and the Passport administration (read: The United States Department of State) accept the notarized marriage certificate to update Driver Licenses and Passports, but for some reason TSA won't accept them to go through a screening. (Or as the supervisor said: ANYONE can get a document like that). Look, we know there are a million hoops to jump through to fly. We also understand that we could have done the name change process earlier, but the fact is we didn't. However, we did everything in our power to get as much legal documentation as we could and that ulimately didn't matter (but a RANDOM piece of mail will work!). We also found out we could get the ticket reissued, but that wasn't until we were 75% through the process at TSA and we had 45 minutes til our flight. COMMON SENSE TSA. COMMON SENSE. Marriage licenses are issued for a reason. Temporary DMV licenses are issued for a reason. Further, I was there with my wife. My name is also on the legal document which matches my legal identification. Me, my legal ID that is shown on the legal marriage license with my wife's maiden name, my wife, her legal identification matching the certificate and her legal name change documents tied to her ticket. Common sense shows we are legally connected and everything matches and points to where it needs to point to. Also, my wife had to go through a full pat-down and full luggage search. Why? Why would she need to do that if the TSA was just verifying her identification. That seemed very unnecessary. OH! The BEST part. This was on our departing flight from our home destination to our vacation destination. The return flight? The TSA agent essentially waved us through. We just played dumb, my wife just flashed her ID and ticket and was let through without any hassle. Lesson learned? Keep your mouth shut and TSA will let you go through. In that regard, I don't know which situation is worse. The hassle or the blatant diregard. This really needs to be fixed. read more

When it comes to the TSA, I resent the fact that even one star is the minimum. My recent experience is not worth relating in detail. Suffice it to say that I'm not even close to any sort of terrorist profile. I was, however, a strong match to the profile of a beleaguered air traveler desperate to make a tight connection. Sucks to be me, though, when I was singled out for public groping and the useless swabbing of all my stuff. Of course I missed my flight, and my wife and I had to take a hotel room and a red eye flight in the morning. No groping the second time, alas! The TSA is a $160,000,000 boondoggle of a jobs program for underachievers and tin-pot tyrants. In a recent review, the TSA screeners missed 86% of the test explosives they were supposed to keep us safe from. The TSA has not managed to apprehend a single terrorist suspect since its inception. It's a waste and a joke. We're no safer, but we're massively inconvenienced, and the kicker is that it's OUR money that funds this lunacy. I really don't understand how a line with 100 people at TSA in Oakland can take as long as a line with 5 people at TSA Long Beach. You might say that Long Beach is just being more thorough, but everybody goes through the same x-ray machines ay both airports and all luggage is scanned in the same manner as well. I love that Long Beach Airport is generally uncrowded at the time of day I like to fly, but it would be ridiculous to come through here if I were traveling during the more crowded part of the day, especially if it always takes TSA that long to waive people through. read more

Disclaimer: TSA reviews will always start off at 1 star and go up from there. 3-stars, am I crazy? Well, I gotta say, the TSA here at Long Beach Airport actually does a somewhat competent job. It may have to do with the lack of foot traffic that larger airports have, but the people here knew their jobs, were quick and efficient, and were very friendly and smiling. Ladies (and I suppose some gents), do not wear any clothing items with rhinestones on it when passing through this TSA line! My mother went through the TSA line last week and the gate went off on her, even after she had taken all of her personal items out of her pocket and into that little basket to go onto the belt. The people at this area barked out that my mom needs to head over to this other woman who had the security wand. So she heads over to that woman and after she made sure my mom's pockets were empty and no belt on, she had that "ah ha" moment when she saw my mom's pants. She had these rhinestones on her pants and so she let her through. (My mother is not the 1st woman to have this problem, according to this employee). The same story happened to me as well. I went through the TSA line with pants that had some colored rhinestones on the pants and sure enough, it also caused the metal detector to go off too. Since this happened to me before my mom, I didn't realize it was my pants. And I too went through the same like routine with playing the metal gate shuffle (you put your right pocket items in, you put your right pocket items out...) and then was ordered to head towards a person with a security wand to search for the offending item. Sure enough, when the female employee scanned the wand on my pants, specifically where there were a concentration of the offenders (my rhinestones), it went off. Unfortunately I completely forgot to mention this to my mom before here trip last week... which propped me to write this review for you so that you do not find yourself in the same situation (unless you like that kind of attention). My daughter traveled recently and went through TSA at the Long Beach airport. She had her personal bag where her laptop was and the TSA agent made her return the bag to check on wipes. Her bag was checked two times and once she got clearance she was told her belongings were in the bag. By the time she arrived to her destination she checked her bag and her laptop was not in her bag. She was able to trace her laptop and it showed it was still at the terminal. That same afternoon I went to the airport to look for the laptop but was told TSA was closed. My adult son returned two days after and was told he could not pick it up because he needs an email. My daughter started sending emails since day one. It's been more than a week and no further emails from TSA. I suspect foul play. The thing is she is a preschool teacher and is taking classes to graduate soon and her laptop has all the information she needs to complete classes and TSA at Long Beach is not working with her to get her laptop back. Hopefully TSA is not lagging on the process to keep the item for themselves because of the 30 day policy. BEWARE and DO NOT TRAVEL with electronic or DOUBLE CHECK that all items are returned back when going through TSA anywhere. read more

I hate air travel because of the TSA. The TSA at Long Beach however are the politest people I don't like. I managed to follow all the rules and arranged my shoes, belt, and laptop in an acceptable fashion on the conveyor and got a polite nod from the TSA who waived me on to the metal detector. The agent there smiled as I walked through the detector and seemed pleased that I didn't have any loose change in my pocket or other contraband hidden away. Having passed that test, I was "randomly" selected to be tested for explosive residue. This was my favorite part of the process. This agent was even MORE polite than the others! He asked me to hold my hands in front of me with my palms facing up so he cold swab them with a special explosive attracting Kleenex. Then the Kleenex was analyzed with a fancy scanner while we waited for the green light (it was actually a tone) signaling the all-clear. Next stop, Phoenix. read more

Maybe people here are just happier then in most places - I'm not sure, but when you get a TSA officer to joke around a bit - you have to enjoy where you are! Daughter Going back to college, misses flight over baggage check & hold up. Yesterday for my daughter's birthday, one of her presents was a small 3 inch ceramic owl statue. She was held up at security for so long with searches and a pat down that she missed her flight. Luckily JetBlue was able to put her on a flight 7 hours later. So now all we have to do is move her shuttle time, dorm room check in, and bookstore appointment at the college. I'm sure this won't cost us anything. All over a 5.00 ceramic owl! I called supervisor Tanisha at security and tried to tell her about this and she instantly went on the defensive and said we should have arrived at the airport 2 hours sooner. That it wasn't security's fault she missed her flight. read more

I give a 3 because there's some legit people working in TSA and then there's some people who are assholish and have attitudes w/ authority complexes. They don't do their job right. Trust me I get the job. I get that the majority of people that come through are impolite douches and don't listen. But there's things that need to be worked on like communication of directions and who you're giving the directions to. Don't think that they're going to magically know. I did security in the military. I will say that everyone who was polite yet direct I understood off the bat. Today my sister was traveling with her husband out of Long Beach Airport, to visit his ailing mother in Ohio. They arrived over an hour before their Southwest flight was scheduled to depart and were happy to see there were not many other travelers checking in at the counter. After checking in their luggage, they proceeded to the TSA check point, with their TSA Precheck tickets. My sister travels for business regularly and has generally enjoyed the convenience Precheck allows. However, today at Long Beach Airport it was a completely different story. There were four other passengers going through the TSA checkpoint at the same time they arrived and for whatever reason, my sister was randomly chosen as a passenger to swab and screen. She had to take off her shoes, taken out her computer, and basically complied with the TSA guidelines as if she did not have Pre check clearance. To further add to her aggravation, the swabs that were taken came up read and she was pulled aside to do a second round of swabing as well as a full body pat down. My sister is a 60 year old woman with many years of travel under her belt. Never had she experienced any scrutiny by the TSA to this magnitude. She was invasively patted down front and back to the point that she felt violated. Needless to say she was livid by the time the humiliating and demoralizing process was complete. I'm writing this on her behalf as she was so traumatized due to the way she was treated by the TSA woman who handled the ordeal. My sister works with top security officers and private organizations on major events throughout Los Angeles and Las Vegas. Helping to secure the safety of successful entertainers and production crews for some of the industries largest productions. She has never been treated so poorly and with so little regard. TSA is basically profiling people they believe they can annoy and have a "good time" with as they fondle their private parts. You would have to be an individual with a sixth grade eduction to believe my sister needed to be treated with unprofessional disregard. TSA needs to stop hiring sub-level, uneducated workers, and bring in real security workers who know how to decipher what is needed to get the job done properly and professionally. As a result of my sisters treatment, her entire day was ruined and her faith in the TSA to perform government service to protect the people on a professional level has been completely lost. She and her husband will never again book a flight out of Long Beach airport, in order to avoid the inept TSA workers! read more

I feel really sorry for the TSA workers at Long Beach who are professional with upbeat attitudes. I'm sure they exist although I didn't notice one today. Recently travelled round-trip through long beach airport, and have much respect and appreciation for those that work to keep folks safe, though some of the TSA agents have serious Authority Complex... They are rude, have NO public service skills, or professionalism. Went thru security with no problems, there was no line, though a bunch of these folks were just nasty and rude when there was no reason to be. I don't require a smile from any service business, especially the TSA....Though having serious authoritative issues and being rude are not necessary for any public service business without cause. Unfortunately, every one of the 5 TSA agents I witnessed or was exposed to were just unprofessional, rude, robots. If you don't like your job, change it. Hopefully, at some point management could read the feedback here and provide some coaching for their teams. read more

I bring protein powder with me when I travel so I can workout and be healthy. Even though I leave it in original packaging, I understand why TSA would want to search that. What I don't understand is why they k ep LEAVING THE LID UNSCREWED so all my belomgings are covered in the stuff when I get home. It's happened twice, and I freaking wrenched the lid on before packing it this last time to assure it wasn't my error. Long Beach is by far the worst I've ever, ever, EVER been treated by TSA. My story: I had less 3 ounces in my water bottle, and it's hot as hell out here AND the water tastes like rusting metal. This vertically challenged, generationally enhanced "woman" with very short frosted grey-white hair asked if I wanted to keep my Nalgene. The things are ~$20, so yes, I do. She said okay, then I would have to exit security, empty it, and reenter. Because "If we do it the easy way, you won't learn. You have to do it the hard way." She walked out of security in front of me, stopped, held it back without turning around. I emptied it, and she walked me back through. I had to take my shoes and things off AGAIN, in my haste to put my ID and boarding pass away again, had to open my purse. Forgot to zip it. Politely asked the male TSA agent if he'd please zip it, he looked at me like I was had just asked him to hold my hand while I pissed in the bushes, and handed it to me with disdain. I understand that it's difficult for him to read "yes" in green and "no" in red, but really? Really? Is he that entitled? Finally got through. And had a way overpriced beer at McKenna's. $8 for a wheat? Happy I don't live in SoCal. Portland may not be as "sophisticated," but at least our hipsters are righteous and obnoxious about the environment and veganism, not themselves and trying to "teach me a lesson." tl;dr - These folks are the horse's farts. read more

I've rarely had an issue with the TSA. Yes, it's kind of annoying, but you need to keep three things in mind: 1. There are a _lot_ of ways to start a fire on a plane, or set off a bomb. Lots. Trust me on this. 2. You know you're not a terrorist. The TSA, on the other hand, does not. So they have to check you and your bags, etc. 3. The TSA is correct to be suspicious of _anything_ out of the ordinary, no matter how seemingly innocuous. Think like a terrorist. Are you going to put a bomb in a packaged labeled "bomb"? Probably not. You're going to make it look like a baby's formual bottle, and get your suicide bomber to dye his hair blond and wear blue-eyed contact lenses. Think, people, think. Remember Lockerbee? I appreciate the job that TSA does and it keeps us safer in the airports and in the air. Long Beach is a small airport, so security is smaller than normal. Plus with Jet Blue that seems to give me TSA pre-approved, I get through security super fast. One time I was pulled randomly and it took awhile for them to check my carry on. They were nice about it. Again, they are keeping you safe people. Say thanks every once in a while. read more

The worst. Most of them are trying to do a good job, but if you opt out of the body scanner, be prepared to get handled rough. They're good at taking innocuous foods/gels/effects, but I can still see methods to evade security. I'm sure others can as well. You suffer the harm of an of the body scanner (increased cancer risk) but you dont get any of the benefit. read more
