I had a quick stay here while in Newark prior to catching an early morning international flight and I was pretty pleased with the experience. I first checked on rates, then location - since I would be staying here for only 12 hours, I didn't really need much aside from that, safety and basic cleanliness - and it delivered on all of those needs! One sell, was that they have an airport shuttle that runs every 30 minutes making it really easy to get back to the airport whenever you need to. Check in was a breeze and honestly, the room was much more spacious, comfortable and modern than I expected. Overall, for a simple stay this is a pretty solid choice that checks all of the boxes for a quick stay while in Newark! read more

I stood here recently & had a good time! The entrance way into the hotel has a pop art vibe to it & the decor in the rooms & on each floor reflect the same design. However the lighting in the room is very white & unflattering, the shower pressure is very light, & the hotel does not have a shop for last minute toiletry needs or access to a microwave for food. Overall not a horrible experience but some things were just not well done and made me question other parts. For instance we only stayed for two nights. Before the second night- the body soap in the shower was empty. Also we stepped on an earring that was there from a prior guests. Both these made me question how thorough they clean the hotel rooms. There is no fridge in the room! Know this beforehand because you won't be able to keep food cold. Honestly though, the room was pretty cold- the window let a cold draft in. For the price, can't complain. But wouldn't go out of my way to stay here again. read more

This is my hotel of choice when I come to Newark for concerts. It's close to the venue, near the train station, and the rates are decent. I wish the bar did stay open a bit later, but I guess it worked in my favor since I was running on 3 hours of sleep. I'm super unfamiliar with the Newark area, but I had a thoroughly enjoyable stay here. I chose this location to stay for a sold-out show at MetLife in August. Despite seeming no frills, there's a ton to appreciate about this place: - easy check-in process - they hold packages at the front desk if you had any sent to you there (we did for earplugs) - the cleanliness of the facilities - free downstairs gym for guests with water bottle refilling station - an onsite diner for those who don't want to venture out for food - walking distance to a number of yummy restaurants including The Yard and a bunch at the Ironbound - free airport shuttle - reasonable walking distance to Newark Penn Station - working TV with plenty of show options - comfy king-sized bed - free Wi-fi (we had a really strong signal on the top floor) I agree with another reviewer who said the walls are thin. We heard someone else's alarm go off next door on a morning we were hoping to sleep in a bit, but it's a small price to pay for all the other benefits. Highly recommend staying here if you're needing to crash somewhere decently priced for an event at MetLife or Prudential. read more

Basic, no frills hotel room, almost austere. Make certain to bring slippers, the bare floor is cold and slippers (and robes) are not provided. No luggage rack. Walls are thin. We could hear phones ringing, the shower running and people talking, in the neighboring rooms. Plenty of outside hall noises too. Floor lamp didn't work and overhead light was bright white and too much Bed was comfortable, water pressure was good. Friendly staff. Breakfast - $20.00 per person, buffet style. When we arrived (around 10:00 am) the food appeared to have been sitting out for a while. The offerings were, hard bread, dry scrambled eggs, impossible to cut french toast & congealed oatmeal. Everything at the hotel was top notch. Check in process was smooth, the hotel decor is pleasing and our King bed room was decent sized. The room was cleaned each day of our stay and towels etc replaced without asking. This hotel is at a convenient location, about 10 minutes walk from Newark Penn Station from where you can take trains to NYC or around NJ. They also have a shuttle service to and from Newark airport, run every half an hour, which is a great value add for the guests. read more

However, this hotel will not be for those who want fancy vibes, but if you don't care about that, then this is great. The free shuttle is the best part and such a lifesaver, shuttle drivers were so nice and appreciate them (don't forget to tip if you can!) Also water refill station in the basement gym area was great and my lifesaver too. However, I am still waiting on my deposit from the visit which has not reflected back yet, so I will look out for that though read more

What's definitely good about this Hotel is its location and the aesthetics of it. But the hotel staff is rude!!!! Mainly everyone is Hispanic which is no problem but the lack of communication is bad. I asked for my room to be serviced and I came back in the evening, it wasn't touched. I called downstairs to let them know that it wasn't and was brushed off. So I waited until the am to say something again to front desk and his response was "did you have tag on the door?" I said no and he replied "well I can't clean it". What!!! Next day is checkout and when we arrived we were told that the airport shuttle arrives every 30 minutes. When we go to turn in key cards and checkout we asked will the can be here at 11:30? The same rude man from the previous night said " we don't have a lot of drivers so it'll be every hour". So my friend asked ok so that's at 12 and he pointed his finger at her and said "I said we don't have drivers so it's 12 o'clock. We just walked away and called a Lyft. The rooms are extremely small, more like boutique-ish. The restaurant Dutch is extremely extremely expensive but it's much much around that area to eat at a certain time so I'm guessing that's why it's a surge in price. The air conditioning made noise the entire time and you can hear people above you walking (we were on the 3rd floor). Would I stay here again?? No I would not. read more

Avoid this hotel at all costs. I stayed here a few months ago. I settled into my room and, upon pulling back the sheets, found a bedbug on the sheets. See photo. Freaked out, I immediately went to the front desk. They agreed to move me to a new room (it was after midnight at this point, or else I would have left to go somewhere else) but would not provide a refund. All they would offer is a "complimentary breakfast." That evening, and over the next few days, I sent emails to the general manager, Joe Macedo. After several attempts to reach him, I received no response. I elevated these emails to Shah Deen, the executive manager, and similarly received no response. I then reached out to Wyndham Hotels broadly and after some back and forth, was eventually "compensated" with 5000 reward points, which is not even sufficient for a free night's stay (not that I ever would). This issue should have received immediate responses and action. I have to assume I received no responses because it would have triggered a number of burdensome actions on their part that they would rather not have had to worry about. Tough - do you job and keep the hotel operating at a basic level of hygiene. It's one thing if it was just dirty - but thank God I checked the sheets before getting into bed. read more

stayed in Room 213 and had a terrible experience that I would never want anyone else to go through. With a "Do Not Disturb" sign on my door and clear instructions given to the front desk to leave requested items outside, a staff member entered my room while I was in the shower. This was an outrageous breach of privacy and safety. Even worse, after reporting the incident to management, I received no response whatsoever. The lack of accountability is just as disturbing as the incident itself. Hotels are supposed to make guests feel safe -- not exposed and disrespected. Because of their negligence and silence, I am now preparing to take legal action and pursue compensation for the emotional distress and invasion of privacy I endured. If you care about your safety and peace of mind, avoid this hotel at all costs. There are plenty of places that respect their guests -- this is not one of them. read more

I found myself staying out here in Newark for a short trip to the NYC area to run a 10 miler out in Bronx. It was my first time staying out in Jersey. Even though it was pretty far away from the Bronx, it was fairly easy to get there using public transportation. The location was really convenient. The Newark Penn Station was only a few blocks away. If you're in the area for an event at the Prudential Center, it's also only a few blocks away. This hotel was located in a decent part of downtown Newark. It got a bit rougher as soon as I got closer to Broad St. There were a lot of food options all within walking distance (e.g. soul food at The Good Eats Experience). The daily rate for this hotel was much more affordable than what I could find for the same weekend over in Manhattan. The hotel was modern looking, clean, and sleek. I found everything in my room to be clean and in good working condition. I would have no problems staying here again if the prices over in NYC are too high again. read more

The major problem--and I mean major is a poisonous and nasty tag team manning the front desk. They think their mission is to create further problems, not solve them. And this was for a large wedding party. I pointed out that our room had a massive noisy fan going that prevented conversation. The nasty guy said I was exaggerating and refused to come up with me to see it. After I insisted, he sent maintenance who said this is terrible and force them to move us. That was only one of the problems with this staff. Hard to say this, but these two may be prejudiced against white guests. Very bad for what seems to be a nice reasonably priced hotel in downtown Newark. read more

I know this review comes super late but wanted to give a shout out to my favorite hotel in my fair city of Newark, NJ. - The Tryp is conveniently located downtown Newark, down the street from Penn Station, wxcellant for commuters. - The rooms are cozy and the bed- omgoodness never slept in a bed so comfortable. The comforter was like sleeping on cloud 9. - The staff is impeccable. Hope everyone I mention here is still working there. Dutch's Restaurant (inside Tryp) Jason- outstanding bartendar with an awesome personality and knows his way around a bar, pours are amazing and his conversation and overall customer service is impeccable. Danny and Valentino- great servers and host. Jad aome good conversations with you guys during my stay. Ty ty for being so hospitable. Tryp Staff and security Margarita, Louis and Chris- Thank you to the front desk staff for basically accommodating my every need! Upon request you guys put everything I asked into activation. Was here for one night and no complaints. Room is a bit small like others have mentioned but given its a downtown hotel that's to be expected. All the amenities were working for me (coffee, water, fridge, TV, fast internet) although it would be nice to have a microwave but not a deal breaker. Check-in was quick and easy. I stayed weeknight so it was really quiet except a constant sound I'm guessing from bathroom next door but it acted like a white noise for me :) I didn't have to utilize their shuttle nor parking lot so can't comment on those. Good rates and overall its a nice hotel if you have to stay in Newark... lol read more

This is the place to stay at if you are coming into town for an event. Walkable from Penn Station and walkable to the Prudential Ctr. The interior is very modern and renovated it seems like. This is also the first hotel in a long time that had the best pillows to sleep on, not flimsy and had some firmness to them. The reason for no 5 stars is due to friendliness of front desk staff - an older gentlemen was not welcoming at all in terms of friendliness and seemed irritated. The other reason for the point is housekeeping ignored do not disturb signs early in the morning and disrupted my rest. read more

Pretty generic slightly plussed up bar food. They say gastropub. I would not say that. Anything good or other within a short walk? Nah. This place is great the front desk didn't ask much you just check in and go to your room, and that is how I love checking in, I asked about parking they explained it quick and then in the elevator a lady explained how each floor is dedicated to a famous celebrity from New Jersey. The room was espectacular omg really the bathroom was so nice and clean and the room wow you have to see it to believe it. The bar and restaurant downstairs is wonderful didn't eat there prices was kind of expensive but I would recommend the food if you don't want to go out. Was prepared to leave a really nice review upon check in. I was really happy with the hotel, the decor, the room size and cleanliness. But this morning at 1:30 am the power went out. At 6 am the fire alarm went off. (False alarm). It is 6pm and the power is still out. Not the hotel's fault, I get it. But the absolute disregard they had when we went to ask for things like a place to heat our food (no), or charge our phones (no) or even get a plate to put our food on (also no) was just terrible. The front staff was rude, dismissive and absolutely not helpful in any way. If you are supposed to be providing an experience (like electricity) and instead have left your guests in the literal dark you would think you would try to be helpful. Or at least apologetic. Nope. Pro's: Nice clean room and bathroom, comfortable beds, and quiet rooms. It's very close to Newark Airport, and convenient to get in and out of Manhattan. Newark Penn Station is about an 8 minute walk away (the train ride into Manhattan is about 20-30 minutes), and the hotel also has free shuttles to Newark Penn Station every 30 minutes. Free hotel shuttle to the Newark airport every 30 minutes as well. Blackout blinds in the room to block out the city lights. In room safe, Keurig coffee maker, and a really decent sized mini fridge in the room. Con's: There's not a whole lot of restaurants or things to do nearby - at least not that I found. Most of the restaurants and bars seem to be located in hotels, and that's just not my cup of tea. I always find those places overrated. I know this is very minor, but the thermostat was really confusing - it had a "vane" mode on it. Just what the hell is that?? No couch or chair to lay back on and watch tv - only the desk chair (which didn't have wheels on it) and the bed. Again, something minor, but the decor in the room was kind of strange - they had a corner with wallpaper on it that showed how tall Shaquille O'Neal is, and some random quotes from other famous people. I racked my brain trying to figure out what the whole theme was. They have a hotel restaurant and bar, but I only had their breakfast buffet there on one of the mornings of my stay. It was $15.95 - and it wasn't all that great. The scrambled eggs were dry, sausage was good, bacon was good, and the fruit was fresh. Service was just "meh" especially considering I was the only one in the restaurant that morning. In summary, this is a very convenient location and a nice hotel. I will stay there again - I can overlook the cons listed above. As I said, it's very convenient if you are moving between New Jersey locations and Manhattan locations on different days - VERY convenient. read more

My expectations were exceeded after reading other people's reviews. The room was neat and clean. Yes, minimalistic but it had everything that we needed. The only "complaint" we had was that the bathroom was very, very cold. Which is why there are 4 out of 5 stars. Our request for additional towels and pillows was met with kindness and speed. The entire staff was very nice. The restaurant was very good and the breakfast buffet was a nice option as well. Especially given an unexpected snowstorm. The shuttle driver, Yvonne was wonderful!! She was incredibly friendly and super prompt, always arriving within minutes of being requested. We would definitely stay again and would not hesitate to recommend the Tryp by Wyndham Newark. read more

Boutique-style hotel with promise in concept but that falls down on execution. Rooms relatively spartan but no major issues. Staff was responsive, friendly, and generally wonderful but for spotty use of masks. Great, funky, fun looking lobby with small restaurant/bar attached. Servers at the bar were fabulous. Nice location short walk from the Prudential Center (which is why I was in town). With all of that as backdrop, it doesn't quite come together the way one would hope. Rooms a little threadbare. Halls smelled of marijuana smoke (seems like there was quite a room party on my floor -- smoky at night AND in the morning -- and smell of stale smoke in general). Elevator broken. Computer system down on checkout. Pricey parking (in my mind at least -- not sure what market standard is for Newark)... It was all kind of sloppy in comparison to the Kimpton/W-style hotels that they are apparently trying to emulate. That said, for the price, it did the trick, and I reiterate that the people working there were great. read more

Where to start...check in receptionist was taking a phone call on her personal cell, we found bed bugs in the queen mattress, the only thing they did was change the sheet and duvet. Even after they changed the sheet and duvet there were still bed bugs crawling around. They said they could not offer a room change because they were completely booked. We ended up not staying the night obviously and asked for a refund which they said they would (still waiting for the refund to show up in our bank account). If I could give this experience zero stars I would. Also there was no tv remote. read more

A very cute hotel that I like to stay in when coming to Newark, New Jersey for business. The rooms are light, airy and clean. The pillows are nice and hypoallergenic. Every room come with a nice long desk and small fridge which is great for kerping water cool. My only Criticism about the desk is it comes with a backless bench for a chair, so if you need back support you will not get it. There has never been alot of noise here and I have been able to get a good night's sleep every time I have stayed. The hotel has some interesting arty design features, modern modular type furniture and colorful artwork throughout. Off street parking is available in the lot on site for $25/day with in/out privileges. I drive here for business so that in/out and inexpensive on site parking is key. The staff has always been friendly and the in hotel restaurant has a very nice bar and service oriented bartender, and great menu food options. In the morning, the restaurant offers an inexpensive solid breakfast buffet with lots of hot and cold options. read more

The concept they were going after was creative. A couple of party poopers: 1. Upon my arrival I had to stay in the lobby until the housekeepers returned from lunch - although it was afternoon beyond check in time. 2. Dutch restaurant onsite couldn't offer food unless you had cash because of their system. 3. TRYP don't have room service. 4. The ceiling was peeling and there isn't any drawers. read more

The room was fine, but service on all shifts was painfully bad. The guy who checked us in over night kept his headphones in his ears and mumbled almost incoherently during the check-in process. Morning shift was the least problematic, but was curt and generally unpleasant. Evening shift the same day must've been training, but the poor guy's trainer disappeared and then the trainee disappeared trying to find them, with a line throughout the lobby trying to check in and the phones ringing off the hook. For the cost (and because of the cleanliness of the rooms) I would stay again, but guests should be aware that this isn't the place to go if you want hospitable service. read more

Came here for a Holiday party. Thank goodness for the company I kept otherwise I wouldn't have had such a good evening First off the service at the bar was mega slow. It was free juice and wine but it seemed as if those that were actually paying for hard liquor were attended to faster. My Colleague and I literally stood standing there for 15 min before we were served and that is only because we hailed down one of the servers otherwise nada. There were 3 ladies and a gentlemen behind the bar. He was working the most and tried to move quickly while the ladies were busy doing something else other than attending patrons. On one occasion while sitting down we asked a waitress if she could get our drink and she said no then 10 min later we saw that very same woman behind the bar serving drinks. The bartender with long straight hair was mega rude for no reason. There is no coat check at this place and the place were you served your appetizers was not comfortable. I do not recommend this place for parties based on the service alone. read more
