I do not recommend this hotel. I chose this location because it is close to the metro station. I also chose this location after reading positive review. I was mislead by the reviews as well as the price for parking onsite each day. From checkin to checkout, customer service was blunt, nonchalant, and unwelcoming. Our reward status was not recognized, addresses, or mentioned. Also, when I complained about the cold temperature in both rooms that I booked, my complaints were downplayed, and condescended. My complaints were not addressed and my bill was not comped in any way, despite reporting that the room was cold each day. We were out of the room majority of each day, so we made the best of our trip during the short stay. Again, I do not recommend this hotel. This hotel is a negative reflection of Marriott Bonvoy, and does not value customer service. read more

Not in a great area, but tbh Newark just isn't great. We only stayed here cuz it was way cheaper than a Manhattan hotel and it's fairly close to Newark penn. The first room we were assigned smelled like acetone / strong cleaning chemicals. Kinda like they were trying to clean up the smell of cigarettes or maybe a biohazard. The second room thankfully didn't have that smell. But the heater didn't work and didn't get over 70 degrees, which definitely sucked in the middle of December. On top of all this, the hotel falsely charged us 7.40$ for a breakfast that we never ate. I noticed it as I was reviewing my credit card statement. MAKE SURE YOU CHECK YOUR CREDIT CARD when you stay here, but honestly just don't stay here. read more

This hotel is conveniently located right next to the Prudential Center and within walking distance of the NJPAC. They also offer a shuttle service to & from EWR airport. There are a handful of restaurants within walking distance. There is a parking garage connected, right behind the hotel. The front desk attendant was extremely kind and helpful upon check in. There's a small bistro open during breakfast hours. The breakfast burritos were pretty good! The rooms were very clean. The bed was a bit on the hard side, but we still slept just fine. The surrounding neighborhood is pretty run down and slightly sketchy looking, but we walked everywhere we went (day and night) and had NO issues. Just be aware of your surroundings and you'll be fine. We would stay here again if we were in the area. read more

Absolutely terrible. Avoid at all costs. You'll be greeted by a locked door from the street that nobody monitors. The sign is small, but it's key entry at all times so if you're checking in you need to ring the desk. This is something that should be detailed up front. I arrived on a day where the temp was 90 outside. The lobby was probably 100+ as the AC wasn't working. The employee had a personal fan behind the desk, but nothing for guests. On check in I was sent to a room that somebody else was staying in. I walked inside and noticed luggage, sheets undone, TV on, and a closed bathroom door. I immediately left without seeing anybody. This is a HUGE safety concern for me entering somebody else's room without notice as well as whoever was in the room at the time. The reaction from the front desk was "sorry, here's a new key" as if this was a non-issue. I spent the rest of my time in the room with all of the locks done. I contacted Marriott directly about the issues on-site and was forwarded to the property management. I still haven't heard back. read more

The parking situation is a bit much the fact that you have to go inside check in then enter a parking garage and only park on the 5 floor but there is no street parking to check in so which means you have to either drive around on the road till you find a open spot. The room we checked in was smokey we informed the staff at the desk( Nelson). The duvet had some sort of green stain marking on it there was also no trash bags in any of the trash i don't know if that's a thing here and no conditioner in the bottle but otherwise it was a lovely room just need to work on a few things. read more

Conveniently located a short walk from Newark Penn station and Prudential Center but the area is a little sketchy andI wouldn't feel comfortable walking around alone at night. OK during the day. The room was fine and bed was comfortable. Nice lobby on the second floor with a tv and a pretty big dining area. No airport shuttle or free breakfast. I would stay here again if I was with a group but not as a solo traveler. Great location if you want to visit NYC because you can take the Path train for only $3. read more

This is an excellent hotel with a great location. It has an old garage attached to it with conveneint parking. The hotel is a perfect spot to stay while going to a game at the Prudential center. The staff is helpful and it has thqt simple atmosphere of a Courtyard hotel. As Newark breaks out of COVID this is a great place to stay convenient to the Newark New Jersey transit train station. We loved our stay at this Marriott. The staff were very friendly and helpful with local directions. It is close enough to walk to the train station during the day but we took an Uber back at night. The garage situation is a little strange... a bit of a walk where they make you park. We hadn't really explored Newark so we decided to stay at this hotel and spend a couple days exploring the area. The hotel itself was perfect for what we needed - nothing fancy, a place to rest our head. The front desk staff were super friendly and they have a gym on the property. It's centrally located as well. The reason I'm docking a couple stars is the noise level on our floor and the alarm clock in our room. The previous guest had set the alarm to 5 am and the dismiss button was broken so it kept snoozing. We finally had to take it out of the wall. The lowest Marriott I stayed in all my travel years. This is more like an Inn motel in California than the Marriott brand. Around $250/night in the slump area is little too high. The best thing about the hotel is it's proximity to EWR airport. you have to take their shuttle which comes every 15 minutes. Rooms are spacious, clean and well maintained. The room was very clean and we were highly satisfied. The bed was very comfy. The room had a little "coffee nook" with a mini fridge down below. Walk-in shower had great pressure. If you are looking for a place to stay in Newark, this Courtyard is a good choice. The location is convenient, the rooms are nice and as expected of the Courtyard brand, and the staff is super friendly. Newark is not the most exciting place to be, but staying in downtown is more exciting than staying next to the airport. The hotel is in downtown Newark, and it is right next to the Prudential Center. It is also a short walking distance to Newark Penn Station and only a few miles away from Newark Liberty International Airport. There is a free shuttle to the airport, but it is not 24/7. If you have a flight leaving super early in the morning or arriving super late at night, this hotel might not be the best option as there are hotels by the airport with a 24/7 shuttle. Otherwise, this hotel is a good option even if you need a quick place to catch some sleep between your travels since it is close enough to the airport. The hotel and its amenities get the job done. The rooms are in good condition. The beds are comfortable. The lobby has a small convenience store that also has a communal microwave. The Bistro is the lobby cafe and restaurant. There is a fitness center, which is in the lobby and next to the elevators. Self-parking is available for $30 per night. Aside from the basics, a nice plus is that there is security by the entrance 24/7. What makes this Courtyard less of a cookie-cutter experience and a little more memorable is that the staff is super friendly. I have stayed here two times and had a great check-in experience both times. The staff is so cheerful and pleasant to talk to. There are only a few hotels in downtown Newark. This Courtyard is a solid option, especially if you are going to an event at the Prudential Center. This is my hotel of choice when I am in Newark unless I have a flight that does not work with their shuttle times. read more

Terrible. This is my second time here (had to for work) and my last time here. My bathroom had dirt on the walls and room wasn't clean in general. One glass for. 4 night stay. The air/heat had not been turned on and smelled like marijuana. Calling the front desk the lady was rude and unhelpful. The message light was on phone with 4 messages that were able to be deleted and you were just routed to from desk - and then she is annoyed again but offers no assistance. The worst part... When you put a/c on ON versus AUTO air still clicks on and off all night long! Suggest staying fudge out and taking taxi in. read more

I didn't know much about this area, or this hotel before arriving. And I loved my stay(s) here (I visited here twice). I would stay here again without hesitation. This is in a great location, ten minutes from the Newark Penn Station, next to City Hall and the Old Church. It's also next door to Prudential Stadium, if you're a hockey fan. Even if you're not a fan, this area has a number of great restaurants locally, and this is a very central area. The lobby is on the second floor and is spacious, clean, and serves as workspace, convenience store, breakfast area, and lounge. The staff here are very friendly. My first check in they recognized my Marriott status and gave me a bottle of water. Second check in they did not, but they went out of their way to provide a room for early check in. They have a mini-market here which has essentials, and a coffee shop restaurant for purchasing breakfast. There is a list of local restaurants they hand out, and every place I tried was great. This is a great neighborhood for foodies. If you're taking the train into New York City, it's a very short walk in a safe area to get there. This is a gem of a hotel, and I would not hesitate to recommend this property to others. read more

Stay here frequently for business. While there are other hotels in the area (another chain and a boutique), this is my choice. The rooms are clean. You can ask for a quiet room if you don't want to hear the street noise. They are very accommodating. The front desk people are very welcoming. They work hard to make you feel welcomed and like a valued customer. There is a Starbucks in the lobby (on the 2nd floor). Serves alcohol as well. The baristas are very helpful. They have a limited menu, and it's good. I usually have the yogurt and fruit, and they do have hot breakfast. Good free breakfast deal with overnight stay. Also had my parking comped. My only watch out: if you need the shuttle, allow extra time. And if you need the shuttle after 5 - get a cab. In my experience, the shuttle has NEVER come in the evening. There is always a "reason", but I just don't think they want to run during rush hour. I get it, the roads are a mess with traffic. However, then don't offer the shuttle in the evening. And, if you are going to the Prudential Center this IS THE PLACE TO STAY AND PARK! You can walk from the parking garage to the Prudential Center - all "inside". Super easy! Wouldn't go back. Not typical Marriott quality. Room was nice and was clean. Staff was nice but not knowledgeable. The basic technology didn't work and staff couldn't use it or fix it. Specifically I tried to print a document but (1) the staff couldn't help me figure out how to print it on the computer they had set up; and (2) when I figured out myself how to print the file, the printer needed a toner cartridge and the staff couldn't replace it, and they spoke with maintenance who said they had no print cartridges. You will hear some yahoo who's selling CD's on the street blaring his crap music all day. Who sells CD's anymore btw? Is this a drug front? Must be. Second complaint, when you walk into the lobby on the first floor, you will smell a rank and overpowering seafood smell. There is a seafood restaurant down there, hence the smell. Dissapponted. The AC in the hotel lobby was broken. Employees said it has been broken for a long tome. There was no food or water in the market place. The toilet in my room was broken. They put me in another room and the door to my room did not work throughout my stay. My television did not work. This was my first experience staying at a Marriott Hotel and I'll just say this I'll never be back to try another this experience has completely ruined it for me. I was a part of a wedding party that stayed here over the weekend and before I even checked in there was already problems with someone else in the wedding party trying to check in they were being very rude. Right then I should have known to just go somewhere else and against my better judgment I stayed. So after checking in I received my room key and proceed to go up on what was the worst experience I've ever had on an elevator..omg that thing shook so much and made so much noise it was terrifying. Then I get to my room and find blood Stained on the curtains and the room had flies in the bathroom or some kind of a flying insect I don't know what it was so they switched our room to another room but same thing it just wasn't clean there was little flying insects things in the restroom, other people from the wedding party complained of roaches in their bathroom and again their curtains were actually cut I don't know how do you rent a room out to people like this and this is the Marriott. The pool area was disgusting and there was no way i was getting in. Looks like it hasn't been serviced in quite sometime. If i could give negative stars I would. read more

At Least All I'm Doing At This Place Is Sleeping! The Good: The Courtyard Marriott in Downtown Newark is prime place to stay for those doing business in the area, catching an event at the Prudential Center, going to a Red Bulls game and or visiting the Rutgers Newark, UMDNJ and NJIT campuses. You can easily get to those locations from the hotel, not to mention the Newark International Airport or Newark Penn Station (free shuttle to Penn & EWR). Above all, this hotel is an okay place to stay if you are going to be busy all day and need a place to crash at night, but not necessarily a great place to explore / relax in. Location: Close to the Prudential Center, University Heights, Newark Penn Station, The Airport (10 min drive), Red Bull Arena (less than 2 mi.) etc. Shiny & New: The Courtyard Marriott Downtown Newark is the first NEW hotel built in Downtown Newark within the last 40 years. AKA everything is new, clean, up-to-date and in working order. Nice Hotel In A Not-So Nice Area: To put it nicely; The City of Newark isn't the most glamorous place to be. However, this hotel is beautiful, clean, well-kept and probably not something you would expect to find in Newark. But, once you leave the hotel, you are smacked in the face with the realities of a big urban city struggling to become a better place at a snail's pace. Housekeeping: The rooms were clean and tidy the entire week my friends and I stayed here! However, they missed leaving some key toiletries the day we checked in. Food: The food in the hotel is pretty decent. Not amazing but not bad in terms of taste and price. Price: Depending on the day of the week, time of the year and what events are going on, you can typically get a room here for cheap. Cheaper compared to staying directly in NYC or directly next to Penn Station. Transportation: As mentioned, the hotel provides a free shuttle to and from Newark Penn Station and the Airport (EWR). It stops at each location ,once an hour form 5 AM - Midnight Plus, it's only about a 10 minute walk (1/2 mile) from the hotel to Newark Penn Station (only do this during the day if possible). The Ugh...: If you miss the shuttle from Newark Penn you will have to wait an hour until the shuttle comes back! If you call the hotel, they will send a cab service to pick you up. However the cab company charges by the fare/ride and not by the distance. Prepare to pay $8.00 (excluding tip) to go the half mile from Newark Penn to the Hotel (not good at all)! If you want a cab, I suggest calling the hotel to arrange this for you. Often time the cab drivers won't take you to the hotel (unless done through the hotel) because it's too short of a ride/ fare. You can walk to and from Penn Station but it's not the most pleasant / safe walk in general, let alone after dark. Not A Great Area: Newark is just Newark. There are positives and negatives to every city, however there's not much to do around the hotel, especially if you want to be safe. The only "good" restaurants you can really go to near the hotel (walking distance) are Dinosaur BBQ, Brick City Bar & Grill and The Edison Ale House. Venturing out to Broad Street is fine but I wouldn't suggest it after dark and especially after dark on the weekends. If you plan to venture out and about in the area, I suggest going in groups. The bigger the group, the better (this rule applies to any big city). The good news - a Joe's Crab Shack is scheduled to open next to the hotel in the near future. Terrible Customer Service: The staff isn't friendly in the least bit! You get a dose of friendliness when you check in, check out and order food from the café. Beyond that, the staff is pretty darn rude! I personally prefer Marriott's and I'm a Marriott Rewards Member, but this location serves up the absolute worst customer service I have ever experienced at any Marriott, let alone a crappy gas station connected to a McDonald's in the middle of nowhere. If this were my first time staying at a Marriott, I probably wouldn't want to stay at another Marriott hotel in the future; based on the customer service. My friends from out of town mentioned that if they visit Newark again, they will not be staying at this hotel primarily due to the lack of customer service. I'm happy that this hotel opened in Downtown Newark! I personally believe that this hotel will help to slowly revitalize the City of Newark; a step in the right direction. However, the Courtyard Marriott Downtown Newark desperately needs to invest some serious time into training they're employees along with giving them a cup of coffee and some sunshine! read more

Where do I even start? The reception is on second floor so once you enter the building there is no one there to greet you, so very unwelcoming. The receptionist were chatting at the bar so I had to wait. When they helped me, their sentences sound scripted than sincere. I have never had someone thank me for being a reward member but at the same time sound like they could care less. Then in the morning house keeping just walked in my room even after I said to come back later. Then it was my food, did not look fresh at all. The arugula were all mushy. Then the fly just flew all over my good and refused to leave. Even though the hotel was decently clean, Definitely wont stay here ever again. read more

As a Marriott Gold status member, I stayed here for 8 days for a business trip. On the last day, I went out with my team and stayed up late. I requested a late checkout of 12:30pm (with Gold status I can get 2pm late checkout). At 11:30am I had the manager of the hotel banging on my door telling me that I needed to immediately vacate my room. I tried to explain that I had a late night and that I needed another hour just to shower and pack my 3 bags. He refused and charged me for another night's stay. Ok, for starters we had a horrible evening at Newark Liberty Airport with our flight being delayed several times due to weather until 1a.m. and then finally cancelled, ARGHHHHHH!!! So then the hassle of calling all the hotels in the area at that time in the morning with all the other passengers from all the other flights scrambling for rooms, crazy! Finally got to the Courtyard and turned out to be a godsend. We got Reena at the front desk at around 2a.m. now and she was as pleasent as can be. No cabs at that hour so she called one for us. Cab showed in about fifteen minutes to whisk us to the hotel. Reena was there to greet us with a smile and all the help she could offer. Rooms are modern, exceptionally clean and the bed was snooze inducing. Large flat screen TV, charging outlets either side of bed for electronics, what else do you need. Breakfast albeit not free was freshly prepared in their kitchen and delicious. Some folks gave lower ratings for the run down downtown. I won't rate an establishment because of it's location, that detracts from the great service and amenities. That being said, if you're ever in the airport and you need to overnight somewhere, do not overlook the Downtown Courtyard Marriott. First thing everyone does is look for the airport hotels, go 5 minutes further, just a measly five minutes. And you will find a great place to lay your head after a long day. Do not come here if you're expecting bustling nightlife, places to hang and trendy bars you're not going to find that. So don't overlook this hotel. I booked a room block for my wedding with the in February, signed a contract with them, etc. One month before our wedding our guests were calling us to tell us that our hotel block has been canceled due to "emergency renovations" when guests were still calling and adding on rooms a few days prior. Turns out they were closing for BED BUGS. I had called them multiple times since I was never told of the closure and I never received any calls back. I went in person and spoke to their "manager" Cathleen who was nothing but disgustingly rude. She called us all liars and stated we were making the whole thing up. Not only that but she also disrespected us calling us terrible humans and told my grandmother (who is an absolute saint) that she would never want her to be her mother. I would NEVER recommend this place to anyone not only for the lack of cleanliness but also for the disgusting and unprofessional "managers" as well. I stayed here three nights for work. The room I stayed in was fine and it had a nice view of downtown at night. Unfortunately, parking is extra and the neighborhood at night feels shady. Also, I thought the the hotel had an awkward layout. The hotel sorta felt like an apartment complex or like a hospital. For example, the main entrance does not have a lobby. You must go to the 2nd floor for check in, and this also where the bar/food area is located. This layout made the hotel feel a bit impersonal to me, not to mention it didn't provide an inviting environment to meet and socialize with my colleagues. read more

This is the best hotel. It's not the nicest hotel I have ever stayed at. It wasn't in the most exotic location for a vacation for sure - but it was SUPER close to one of the greatest cities in the world! So what was it - that makes this hotel so fantastic? It's the staff and their commitment to the guests and the City of Newark and their partners. I spent 47 nights here from June 5 - August 17 2017 and they could not have been a better group of people. I consider them all friends frankly. There is no better place to stay in Newark and for that matter most of northern NJ. It's the perfect place if you're in Newark, need access to NYC - 25 mins to Manhattan - Mid-Town or WTC - and most of New Jersey and 10 mins by car to Newark International Airport. It's also super close to most of the business hubs of Central and Northern NJ - one of the largest markets in the country. The hotel is basically connected to Prudential Center - the 4th busiest arena of 15,001 more seats in North America and the 6th busiest in the World for the first six months of 2017 (*Billboard magazine - 08/05-11/2017) I HIGHLY recommend the hotel - it's amazing - and the staff is PHENOMENAL! If you want to feel like you are at home and part of the family - this is your place - especially for a long term stay if you're relocating to NJ! read more

After many flight delays and being trapped at the airport for 12 hrs, we ended up stuck in Newark overnight. With all the hotels booked, we ended up at this one- and we are thankful we did. The night staff was FABULOUS. They were extremely accommodating and even threw in free breakfast for our entire family of 7. The morning staff was just as wonderful. Extremely customer service oriented and friendly. After dealing with rude gate and booking agents at the airport, the service we received here was refreshing and just what we needed. The rooms were your average hotel room, but I'll take an avg room w above avg customer service any day over a luxurious room and avg customer service. read more

As a frequent traveler, I have been to a lot of Courtyards. I have also been traveling to Newark every week for the past six months and have stayed in multiple hotels. As far as Courtyard is concerned, this location gives you exactly what you expect. The rooms are not huge, but they are clean. The reason I chose to stay here, however is for two main reasons. 1. If you are looking to stay in downtown Newark, this is the best and cleanest option. 2. The customer service I receive here is awesome. They are all very friendly and talkative, and they make me feel welcome. This helps a great deal when traveling a lot.
