Final Thoughts: 3.49/5 Another food item that my friends and I always enjoy is sushi. We decided to try a new place today. Unfortunately, my expectations were not met today. Overall, most of the items were good. Service wasn't the best, but I have heard that this isn't their baseline, so perhaps it was just the day. Not a terrible first impression, but definitely not the best. Food: Chicken Karage (Appetizer): 4.2/5 Appetizer #1. The chicken is very tender on the inside and quite juicy. Outside is nice and crispy. There are a lot of sauces that work well with this dish, but they provided a sriracha mayo here. Quite the standard dish. Flavor wise, delightful. Seasoned well and the batter has this homemade taste to it. The sriracha mayo had some kick, but tolerable (subjective). Garlic Noodles: 1.1/5 Our second appetizer. I'm genuinely unimpressed by this dish through and through. This...this was ramen noodles perhaps with some seasoning and a light flavor of garlic. The presentation plays a large role in this too. It's on a large plate and spread out. This gives the impression that there's a very insignificant amount provided. For something that's the same price as the chicken karage, it was definitely not worth it. Spicy Crunch Roll: 4.6/5 My favorite roll today. Inside, there's shrimp tempura with avocado. Outside, you'll see spicy tuna, a crunch (perhaps bread crumbs), tobiko, spicy mayo, and unagi sauce. The flavor's of this roll work really well together and I got that impression simply from looking at the ingredients included. This roll has a good texture and balance of flavors. Some spice is present, but just a kick. Avocado is still nice and green inside. Sweet, salty, and umami across the dish. Spider Roll: 4.4/5 Second favorite here even though only 5 pieces are available. Loved the end pieces. I believe there are piece of the soft shell crab that's used to construct it, so that it looks like a spider. This adds a nice crunch to this roll. There is cucumber inside and that freshness to the roll. Some teriyaki/unagi sauce is drizzled on top and it gives it another flavor. Heart Breaker: 3.7/5 This is the roll that intrigued me the most because it was served on fire. It's one of their baked rolls. You can see the actual flame still coming out of it. On the inside, there's shrimp tempera and avocado. On the outside, there's salmon, tuna, yellowtail and unagi with house/unagi sauce and tobiko. Nice flavor combination, but it was a little too rich and oily for me to fully enjoy. Lion Roll: 3.7/5 This roll has scallops over California maki baked with house unagi sauce and sesame. The flavor was quite nice with this one and worked really well with the rolls. I didn't need any additional soy sauce today. Again, the sauce on top felt really oily. Perhaps this was because it was baked, so the sauce kind of separates, giving it that creamy and oily layer. Hamachi Love Roll: 3.5/5 This one is probably my least favorite and not because it wasn't good. The other rolls were just more to my liking. This one has Hamachi and avocado on the inside and more Hamachi with tobiko and green onions on the outside. I feel like it's rare that I see green onions as a garnish for sushi. Something about it was just a little off for me though because green onions typically have a more subtle scent. --------- Quality: Nice and fresh Quality of the sushi appeared optimal. Don't think I have a palette for this, but the ingredients appeared nice and fresh. Nothing too significant to note here. Price: Ok...ish... The price seems pretty average, but for what you get, it seems to lean more on the expensive side. Typically, I would assume that one roll is about $14 to $19. This was within that range for the most part. I will say though, these rolls do look a bit smaller. Perhaps this is just how they do it or it is to cut costs in general. For the appetizers, please don't get me started on those garlic noodles. Eight dollars for that plate just does not seem worth it. Around $26 per person pre-tax, which is not horrible for this meal. Service: Could be better For my first experience...service was not the best...Apparently this isn't their baseline though. My friends have been here multiple times and they're usually quite fast. This wasn't the case today and they actually took quite a bit of time. A lot of their tables were filled though, so perhaps I can give them the benefit of the doubt. Ambiance: Small and cozy Quite the small restaurant. Mostly booth seating is available with some regular table seating and bar seats. Just slightly cramped inside, but not a huge concern here. Slightly dim lit inside. Very warm and cozy though. Location/Parking: Optimal It's located in the same plaza as Tastea on White and Aborn Road. I feel like enough people go to this plaza because of the different shops, restaurants, and even gym here. Parking lot is optimal for this plaza. Been going to a competitor of this restaurant for years -- it's also on Aborn but just on the other side of Capitol Expressway. Love this other restaurant's food but disappointed they only have dark meat chicken, which I and my late Dad don't eat, we only eat chicken breast. I didn't even know Truya was in this neighborhood until I happened upon it on Yelp, looked at the menu, saw they serve chicken breast, and had to try it -- could this become my new favorite in the neighborhood? Alas, it was not meant to be. You walk into this place and the whole vibe is dark & depressing. It was also practically empty right at prime dinnertime. I should have taken all that as a sign and walked out. Soup and hot tea were ok except they seemed to be served in dishes where the soap had not been fully washed out -- they both strangely had a slight soapy smell. The shumai was not was I was used to -- usually steamed and with a nice amount of shrimp -- this was pan-fried and, as it said in the menu, "shrimp-flavored." It was just 'ok.' The teriyaki sauce, although more generous than most places, was one of the most unpleasant I've ever had -- I know this is going to sound harsh, but the aftertaste was almost like cleaning fluid. And it wasn't just me: both my sister and I agreed. Her dark meat chicken itself was fine, but the teriyaki, no, and she's the kind that usually eats every morsel of her chicken teriyaki. I ordered what I came there for, chicken breast teriyaki, but that, too, was disappointing -- the chicken was way too tough. The one redeeming item was the 3rd item in my bento box, the salmon, which was cooked perfectly; but, again, the teriyaki sauce no good. Most of the 5-star reviews are about the sushi and I don't eat sushi (except California Roll, but we all know that's not REAL sushi!) but I like all the other cooked food at most of the Japanese places I've gone too. But people here on Yelp seem to LOVE the sushi here, so I suppose that's really what's to come here for, not the cooked food. I should add ... Indid have California Roll and it was fine and they gave me a generous portion on my 3-item bento box. I've ordered the same thing here 4 times: the $35 hand-roll set with 3x negitoro and 2x salmon. A few days ago, the chef gave me 3x chopped hamachi rolls instead. The hamachi was some of the oldest, most disgusting fish I've ever eaten -- I took one bite and threw it away. When I called, the chef tried to tell me their "negitoro" has always been hamachi (Google it... negitoro is tuna), and when I returned again a few days later, my usual chef said he doesn't know why the other chef lied, but that they do use random fish when they're running out lol read more

Because I have eaten a lot of eel rice at other restaurants, I find it strange that this restaurant has many unrelated toppings for unagi donburi. Had the craving for Japanese food and visited Truya again. And as usual, they forgot to include the tempura dipping sauce with our bentos lol. As mentioned in my previous review, I've worked around this by buying my own kikkoman tempura dipping sauce. But it's now just become a betting game between my gf and I as to "if" the sauce will be included in this weeks order :p The food is still good though. With the exception of the teriyaki beef. For the past three times we've ordered this for our bentos, it just wasn't the best. Very tough. Unsure if it's because undercooked or perhaps not a good cut of meat. YMMV. We came here on a Monday on 9/21/20 for takeout around 5pm. We ordered using the Yelp app which used EatStreet. There were a lot to choose from but we decided on a couple of rolls and bento boxes. We ordered two bento boxes that had teriyaki chicken (for both) and the California Maki and Sashimi combo as the second item. The rolls we ordered were the Spicy Tuna Maki and the Honolulu Maki. The bento box had a salad (with ranch dressing underneath), rice, the two items, and miso soup. It was enough for one person to most likely be full and the teriyaki chicken tasted good. The California Maki was good as well as the other two (Spicy Tuna Maki and Honolulu Maki). We were able to finish everything and were full. A week later, we tried the 49ers Maki, Sweetheart Maki, and Truya Fire Maki. The 49ers Maki was not like other sushi restaurants and there was a lot of Macadamian nuts which was a little overpowering to me. The Sweetheart Maki was good and the Truya Fire Maki was spicy to me. We came here for sushi. The menu is huge and prices are reasonable. We ordered Sushi Special which came with tuna, Yellow Tail, Salmon, white fish and egg. The selections of the Sushi Special are great and enough for two. The fish is very fresh, moist and delicious. We also had Agedashi Tofu ( the sauce is a bit salty for me), Hamachi hand rolls and a large warm sake. All comes to $40!! I like our waitress. She was very accommodating. I asked for an item that not on the menu, she smiled and said, "we can do that for you". That's real customer service. Unlike servers at other restaurants, they don't come back to check if we need anything else after bringing the food. This waitress checked on us often, asking if we needed more hot tea. The last time I went, I really enjoyed it. The rolls tasted great and felt fresh. I would recommend the Truya Fire roll and OMG roll, but swap to salmon for the fish that is not salmon. The first time I got the Truya Fire roll, it just tasted and smelled so bad. It was strong and funky. My guess is either the unagi sauce or spicy tuna. Those items can be good, depending on the restaurant. That is why I said no unagi sauce and no spicy tuna the last time. Swap to salmon. The modifications made it way better. Thankfully they didn't put spicy tuna. I actually allowed hamachi, which is okay. That is light. I think it's the spicy tuna that could be the problem. Anyway, sushi tasted good this past time and felt fresh. The spicy crab was really good. Good texture. I would say this place is like a high 3. I finally had it with this establishment tonight though because the workers here seems like they are just done with their job. It was just ok. Hubby and I tried this place last Friday because we've been meaning to try it since it's close to home. Sushi roll selection was very limited and quality of food was just mediocre. We did get a free salmon cheek with check-in and the hubby loved it! We ordered a roll, bento box, and grilled squid. Squid was a tad rubbery and I wasn't feeling the tempura. So this is the very first time we went to Truya Sushi ever, and we decided to try the restaurant for New Year's Eve. It came very highly recommended from our friends who I feel are picky - so it was a good choice, not only because we love Sushi, but it is close to where we live. I had the Negihama and the Philly. My husband had the Rainbow Roll and the Baked Mussels. The reason I only gave it 4 stars was because the Tuna and Hamaichi that I had tasted too salty. And that was a problem for me. I wanted to write this only because when fish is salty, it might be because in curing it, they used too much salt or they didn't rinse the fish enough. I don't know why it tasted salty, but when it is, you can't differentiate the taste of the different fish and being that the fish was very fresh, we wanted to be able to taste the differences. The waitress was terrific. She was the only wait staff, and considering that, she was responsive and did an awesome job. Sometimes we kibitz (talk to and are friendly) to the waiters, but unfortunately we only got the chance to do it at the end of our meal because she was soooo busy, being alone. She was very friendly then and we had an enjoyable time. Everything was fresh and came on time - very little wait time. And it was well prepared and tasty. We will definitely come again. I felt if I didn't say anything (about why I gave it 4 stars), then the owners wouldn't know how we felt. I want to try it again. My husband usually has mussels cooked with a spicy aioli sauce in other places which we frequent. He asked the waitress if they had these, and she said to say something to the chef and maybe he will make them for you. So we will ask the chef about this. That said, take note that my review will be based on food alone. This was our line-up: Bento Box (Salmon Teri/Chicken Teri/Cali Maki), Salmon Teri with brown rice, Chicken Teri, and an order of their Shrimp Tempura Roll. The salmon and chicken were cooked perfectly, and they were both moist and flavorful in each of the individual orders. The Shrimp Tempura Roll and the Cali Maki were probably the best I've had in a while. As the saying goes, "Don't knock it til you try it!" I'm givin' these folks a solid 4 Stars! I may not have tried all the fancy rolls that everyone has complained about, but for my pallet, everything we sampled was on point!
