The technician arrived on time with all of his tools and spent approximately 45 minutes to an hour performing what appeared to be a thorough diagnostic inspection. After completing his testing, he told me that the compressor had locked up and that the repair could cost several thousand dollars. He also said that because my units are about 20 years old, he did not recommend repairing it and instead recommended replacing it. I explained that although the units are old, they have rarely been used because our house doesn't get very hot, and they had worked flawlessly for nearly 20 years without a single issue. The technician suggested having his supervisor come out for a second opinion. The following morning, both the technician and the supervisor returned and performed another round of testing. They again concluded that the compressor was locked up and that replacement was necessary. They presented me with three options, the lowest of which was approximately $17,500, and they strongly encouraged replacing all three of my AC units for well over $50,000. They found that the compressor had seized, which they quoted me a price for it, but then, they also said I have to replace the fan (not broken) +$850, clean the coils +$350, replace the filters (they were changed 2 months ago) +$95. I decided to pull a trigger and replace my old ducts. I figured why replace ducts only if I can put some nice unit and have not only heater but also AC!
