Bbq wasn't on the level it used to be. My friends chicken breast was so dry he could have spit feathers. The other saying I didn't understand. Would you like it room temperature or hot and ready. Tells me it's been sitting. We spent over $60 for lunch! That was mediocre. Milton has someone else on grill that just turns the meat and pats to see if it's done. If you're confused by the outside, you're not alone. The ceramic pigs really are an interesting touch! I was excited to find this local Black owned BBQ spot. It's clear that they're a favorite because a lot of customers were in and out, but they did a great job of managing safety by only letting in a certain number of people and asking people to wait in their cars after ordering. I had the turkey wings and they were big (and yummy)! I also had the Mac & cheese and collards as sides. The side were so-so. Something about being at the Zoo makes me crave BBQ, probably has something to do with living in Memphis for 5 years and going to the Zoo and then Central BBQ at least once a month. So as we were finishing up at the Riverbank Zoo, we brought out google and asked where the nearest BBQ place was, which is how we stumbled on True BBQ. They smoke the BBQ right there in the parking lot, the smell draws you in before you even open the door. The menu is simple. I ordered the chopped BBQ plate, I expected shredded BBQ, like what is on a BBQ sandwich, over the rice but it was almost like mush with a tangy mustard based sauce, it was delicious. I had the potato salad and Mac and Cheese sides, both were good. My son had the BBQ sandwich and Coleslaw, the slaw wasn't my favorite but the sandwich was good. I am so DISAPPOINTED,, about 3 years ago this place had the absolute best BBQ & soul food. I could tell anyone to go there knowing they would not be disappointed. Came to true BBQ for late lunch. We ordered ribs with collard greens and mac n cheese. My husband ordered it without BBQ sauce. Which to my surprise was delicious. Yes. This is the spot for BBQ in USA. So far I've been all over this country and I've had bbq in all the great bbq states. This one knocked it pit of the park with great ribs and brisket with sauces that'll make you wanna slap yo momma. They have 3 sauces for your bbq and every one of them is made to perfection. I couldn't choose between one sauce out of the 3 for best in show. They are all delicious. The sauce is on the side so you can dip or drizzle your meat as you wish. One is vinegar based and it makes you feel like you're enjoying chicken wings with a bbq rib or brisket kick. One is tomato based that gives you that old school feeling and goes perfectly with your bbq. The last one is the mustard based sauce. Which I thought at first I wouldn't like, but oh man was I wrong. This sauce changes my mind about adding mustard at all on my bbq. It's a great sauce and it gives you great pleasure in knowing that you can enjoy one more sauce on your bbq to change it up. The ribs by themselves have a great rub on them which doesn't need a sauce to cover it up. The brisket is so delicious and moist it melts on your tongue. If you had no teeth I promise you wouldn't have a struggle with this brisket. I enjoyed the potato salad the most out of the 4 sides I tried. The coleslaw is a little high on the black pepper and vinegar side but not too bad where it doesn't taste good. I like it but only in a small amount in between other bites. The pork is smoky and toothsome, the hash is .... quite tasty (?!?!), the mac & cheese and green beans are very good, and the people are as kind and welcoming as the day is long! This is a good, solid, BBQ joint. It is low key, tucked into Triangle City in West Columbia. When you pull up, a large grill is out front cooking some great pork and chicken. The smell of slow cooking BBQ is amazing. The atmosphere inside is friendly and relaxed. However, when they are busy, the place is packed and the wait can take a while. We've been coming for several years and sort of know when to time it to miss the crowds. The chopped pork is good. Nice, smoky flavor. Tender. The chicken is good too. Moist and smoky. The baby back ribs are solid as well. Meat easily separates from the bone. All of the sauces are great! Can't go wrong with any of them. The mac and cheese tastes like your grandmother made it! Real cheese! The hash gets high marks as some of the best in South Carolina. And it is good. The collards... Oh, my! The best collards around. You won't find collards like this in any restaurant. It really is like an old family recipe. Each dinner comes with two sides and my wife gets a double order of collards! Small sandwiches were a good size with a side of Mac and cheese for two females. The meal was a lot and the hash was ok but the actual bbq was on point, great!! We loved the food!! The real deal, True BBQ is a small family-run restaurant that serves amazing, melt-in-your-mouth southern pork barbeque. Moist with just the right amount of smoky flavor, the meat is great alone, but then add their pretty lady sauce (mustard base) or sexy lady sauce (ketchup base) and you really have something special! Their cook, Ernest, has been at it for years cooking for church and family events. He and his family opened this restaurant back in September and have been working hard to keep their customers happy. Last I looked their one-day lunch record was 218 served. Pretty good considering the only have a few seats in the dining area! The best thing about this place is that Ernie cooks it ALL - smoked turkey wings, beef brisket, pork chops, and the absolute best hash and rice you've ever had. The traditional southern sides that come with meals definitely measure up to the quality of the entrees. We arrived around 12pm and all they had was pulled pork, which is fine because that's what I wanted. We ordered two little Z pulled pork sandwiches with two different sauces and coleslaw.
