Toyota Tacoma
Benjamin M.

I took my 2019 TRD OffRoad Tacoma to the crew at Tru and I must say that I couldn't be happier. It started off with a suspension lift quote way back in July, but now I've got a Switch Pro, rock sliders, skid plates, wheels, tires, and I'd say the best upgrade you can do on a Tacoma, a re-geared transmission with a much better gear ratio. I had planned to do all of these upgrades at some point, but the guys at Tru Automotive gave me good recommendations based on their knowledge and experience with different parts, products, and even the differences between manufacturers. They also tailored their recommendations based on what I told them my end goal was for my build. They installed parts I sourced through them, parts I brought to them purchased elsewhere, and even fixed my botched on-board air compressor install! Every time I walk up to my truck to drive it, I have the biggest smile on my face. I'll recommend Tru Automotive to anyone who wants to have any work done on their truck. Friendly service, open communication, great customer service, knowledgeable group of guys. I'll be going back for my next upgrade.

Incredibly knowledgeable and friendly staff. Wouldn't trust anyone else with my build. They never make me feel silly for asking a question or changing my mind about tire size. Highly suggest for any overlander build and advice! I'll be back real soon!

Eliminated the RhinoRack Pioneer platform. Reduced overall height by about 1 foot from the old RTT.

Kudos and many thanks to Austin and his team at Tru Automotive for the outstanding craftsmanship and engineering they did on my 2016 JKU: - Upgrade the differential gears. With all of the weight we added to the JKU over the past seven years (35" tires, winch, full steel plating, overland storage, roof top tent (RTT, etc.) we noticed less power on mountain passes. Austin recommended upgrading our stock 4.10 gears to 4.88. On the way home from Tru Automotive after the 500-mile break-in diff service I was first in line at several traffic lights. I wouldn't say that I slammed the gas pedal, but I did press it with a little more spirit. And boy did the JKU respond! I'll look forward to having fun on the trails (and on the way to the trails) this year. Austin gave me the opportunity to see the work in progress and have an opportunity to speak with the master mechanic. I was impressed with the time Billy took to clean the rust out of the axle, insert the Nitro Sleeve Kit and find the proper spacing for the Nitro gears. It was an incredible work of a real craftsman who took pride in his work. - Replaced the serpentine belt. I sought Austin's advice on replacing the serpentine belt since it had rubbed the ground wire on my winch last year. Austin said that I was on the edge of the window for normal replacement and I followed his advice to replace the serpentine belt since we frequently travel hundreds of miles from a service station. I will rest easy knowing our serpentine belt shouldn't fail for some time. - Upgrade the RTT. The cherry on this year's project was the upgrade of our RTT to a to a GFC V2 Platform RTT. Austin listened to our concerns with the old RTT (height, total weight and weight disbursement) and went above and beyond our expectations. With my approval he and a colleague designed a custom machined bracket (6 of them) to attach the GFC RTT to the existing RhinoRack backbone. With Austin's ingenuity and passion to resolve the concerns with the old RTT he and his team reduced the overall height of the JKU with RTT by about a foot and reduced the weight on the roof by 37 pounds by eliminating the RhinoRack Pioneer platform. If you do a lot of off-roading, you should recognize that this will provide me with much greater comfort on off camber trails. The GFC RTT and Austin's design will also be much more aerodynamic on the highway. And the bonus is the GFC will take 30 seconds to setup compared to the 5-10 minutes the old RTT took to setup. - Lastly, Austin took the JKU for a drive before starting the work and noticed a spongy feeling in the Teraflex brakes I had installed by another company several years ago. His team performed a big brake service and it is wonderful to have confidence in the brakes again. In summary, I was very impressed with Austin, his machining colleague, Colter, Billy (the master mechanic) and Austin's GFC installation team. If you want outstanding craftsmanship, pride in workmanship and exceptional service at a reasonable price then Tru Automotive is the place to go.

TRU Automotive, Colter, Austin and the guys are awesome. I am a complete beginner when it comes to off-roading and overlanding. These guys have taught me so much and been so helpful as I build my dream adventure vehicle. The craftsmanship and quality of theirs builds is top tier. You want it done right then bring it to TRU. I was surprised how fair their pricing was compared to other inferior shops. Thanks again I love how my truck turned out.

I walked into Tru a few years ago when I had a last minute big project that needed to be done for an offroad show. The owner went out of his way to make it happen. Since then, they've been the only shop I've used for all three of my vehicles. They are honest, incredibly knowledgeable, some of the friendliest guys in the business. I'm happy to be a part of their fam now.

Eventually they called me back and I made arrangements to drop my car off after hours, due to a busy work schedule. George told me there was a drop box in the door. I arrived at 10:30pm and searched all around the building and didn't find a drop box. I called him in the morning and he insisted I just missed it and there was a Dropbox in the door. I asked him to send a picture of the drop box so I didn't miss it again and that's when he told me they don't have a drop box. I was suppose to jimmy open a window and then push the office door open through the window and throw my keys in. None of which was explained on the phone and not something I'd know to do as that's also considered breaking and entering. This place seems incredibly sketchy. Sent my 1970 dodge dart for A/C to be installed. They of course did a inspection on the hole car and came back a list of things i needed to address. 1) pinon leaked, which I agreed to the work. They forgot to put oil in rear end and blew it up. They did say to me repeatedly they repaired it at their cost. 2) No oil in rear end, but 3 extra quarts ended up in motor and blew all the seals out. I fixed intake gaskets, but didn't realize the front crank seal leaked. Fixed that myself on road in Ohio. 3) Electrical issues. Some sort of power surge blew my horns, LED running lights, relays, and fuses, . Also when they ran AC vents, Wreck it ralph tech just pulled pipes thru dash and scrapped and damaged multiple wires and connectors. Car and AC would just shut off in intersections for weeks until we found the issue. one connector got so hot felt like it was on fire. 4) AC leaks so bad inside the Car that carpets are soaked. 5) They didn't have anyone that had equipment to charge AC, so a "guy" ran home to get something to charge it. My long time friend on Power Tour recharged it, then i had cold air. 6) Loose bolts and Ground for Fuel injection thru the engine compartment. 7) The fuel Injection ECU went bad during power tour. Had to replace it carburetor. 8) The annoying thing. when car was returned, the inside was filthy. metal shaving, wire pieces, connectors, extra holes for AC i assumed, cables on bare metal. the level of attention just wasn't there, ever. Best part is they started ignored all my emails about this. Only saying in beginning that "we wouldn't do that". I did get text messages saying, "we tried to call, but you wont pick up." $11,000 for them not to give a crap. Anyway, good luck if you choose this place.
