Bottom line - not clean and said they use force ("corrections") with your dog…read more We had an appointment for an evaluation of our dog's temperament. This was around 9am and we were the only people there other than the staff - which we only saw 2 people. While our dog was getting evaluated and we filled out paperwork, I was observing the dog play area. There were 2 piles of poop in there when we arrived. I don't know how long they'd been there already. But 20 minutes later as we were getting ready to leave, those 2 piles had turned into at least 4 piles (that I could see). Nobody appeared to been observing the dogs let alone cleaning up after them. I asked the person at the front desk (asst. mgr?) about cleanup and he didn't seem at all concerned. He basically said someone comes around once in a while to clean up. Thankfully, my dog is not a poop eater - although I've had dogs in the past that were - and I can understand sometimes it may take a few minutes to get to cleanup. But this was just nasty. I wanted to like this place because our dog loves to play and is very spirited with other dogs. This chain seems to have a philosophy of letting dogs be dogs and regulate their own play unless things get out of hand. I think that's ideal as long as the dogs are screened first and are being monitored so someone can step in quickly if needed. I was just not confident that would happen here. The last straw for me was when my dog passed the evaluation but the staff member talked about sometimes using "corrections" with dogs. I am a believer in force-free training (positive reinforcement), and I understand there might need to be exceptions needed for emergencies when dogs must be separated quickly, but I'm just not ok with strange men giving my 16 pound dog a "correction" of any kind. Google the term if you want to know what it might mean, or better yet ask Hounds Town and make sure you're comfortable with it. They don't have live camera feeds available like some other places, so you are putting your trust in them, and if this was how things when down when they had a first time potential client, I can't imagine how much worse things might be at other times. We have tried 4 local places and still feel I haven't found the ideal doggie day care / boarding place. There have been a couple of acceptable ones, but this one would be a last resort for us.

Wow! This is a great place for dogs! The facility is new, clean, very large, with lots of play time…read morefor the dogs. The Staff are all wonderful and my dog loves going here. They all monitor, engage and care for my dog and he always comes home tired and very quiet for the evening. The Owner Jim is very caring and engaging with the dogs and their owners. My pup stayed for a week and came home happy and tired out! Jim called the day I picked him up to tell me how he well he did while I was away. It made for a very positive experience and we are very happy customers at Happy Dog! Highly Recommend!

We were looking for a new place to board our dog after moving to the area. Saw lots of positive…read morereviews so tried it out. The very first time we brought our dog in, the owner Jim made a point of mentioning "I've had problems with that breed in the past but I'll give her a chance" Our dog is a pit mix, we've had her since she was 10 weeks old. She had stayed at other boarding facilities and has been well socialized, we have never had any issues with boarding or being at dog parks etc. We had our dog stay twice, when picking her up the other staff members always said she did well, never reported any issues to us. When we called to arrange boarding the third time, the owner answered and informed us he would not allow our dog to come back as "she doesn't do well here". No other information was given. Giving 2 stars instead of 1 because we really liked the place, the dogs can go outside and the staff is generally kind and does a good job. It is a shame though that the owner is so prejudiced against certain breeds, and I feel that someone who really has that much experience working with dogs (as he claims) would know not to judge a dog based on breed but judge on a case by case basis. And if our dog really did have an issue, why were we not told when it happened? I find it hard to believe our dog randomly had an issue at this boarding facility, but never had any issue before or after at any other boarding. TL;DR: owner is prejudiced against bully breeds, will tell you to your face and then not allow your dog to come back

Over the years we've tried a number of the local big name boarding facilities before finding AAPR-…read moreRoyal Oak. After the first experience with each of the other boarding facilities, our dog could not get out of the facility fast enough - and most of the time, he would refuse to go back inside the facility and would not let us leave us for the second boarding. We don't have that problem here. I fully trust my dog's intuition, and I fully trust the staff at AAPR-Royal Oak. We board several times a year - sometimes for a weekend, and every now and then for a full week. It doesn't matter how much time has passed in between visits, each time we show up for boarding we are greeted by the same handful of smiling faces, and they are always so excited to see our pup. And more importantly - he's excited to see them too. We only board overnight (with the daytime play of course), so I can't speak to any of the other available services. And our dog does not require any additional special treatment or services, so I can't speak to that either. I do wish that they were a little more consistent with the after boarding report cards that they send out electronically. It's always nice to get a little more detailed feedback about how boarding went. There are a few specific people who will take that extra few minutes to give us a quick recap if they're the ones bringing him out to us at the end of the stay, and for that I am so so grateful. I wouldn't hesitate to bring my dog here, nor would I hesitate to recommend AAPR- Royal Oak to friends and family.
