Tropicali is the REAL DEAL. I've had a lot of poke in my life, and after four visits, this is still hands down my favorite poke spot of all time. The fact that it's all the way in Big Bear makes it even more surprising because the fish is always so fresh and the flavors are, of course, amazing. This is genuinely one of the highlights of every trip when I get the chance to come here. I've tried a few of the bowls and they've all been solid, but the Kraken is definitely my go-to. The fish, flavors, and toppings all work so well together. I love everything about this bowl and find myself thinking about it even when I'm nowhere near Big Bear. I'm also glad they were able to move into a bigger location because the old one was much smaller. It can still get PACKED though. On our most recent visit, we came around 3:30 pm on a Monday during the last week of December and waited about 45 minutes to order, then another 20 minutes for our food. They have a self-order kiosk now, which helps keep things moving, but I'd still be prepared for a wait when it's busy. Considering how good the food is, I completely understand why so many people are here. The staff deserves a mention too. They're always so kind, welcoming, and high-energy, which makes the experience even better despite how busy it can get. I seriously love Tropicali. It's wild to me that some of my favorite poke is all the way up in Big Bear, but I always look forward to the next time I can come back. Absolutely worth the wait every time. read more

The lines may look long, but they actually move super fast since it seems like most people already know what they want. When we went, there were three open kiosks for ordering, so ordering was a breeze. While waiting in line, you can even order a drink for yourself, which is a nice way to make the wait go by a little faster! I also love that there's plenty of seating both indoors and outdoors. Our party of 2 encountered no wait upon arrival on a weekday mid-afternoon, but a line began to form while we were exploring the space so we quickly got in place. We used kiosks to order our Pele (spicy wild caught sashimi grade ahi tuna) and Kraken (savory sweet wild caught sashimi grade ahi tuna) Poke Bowls, both served on a bed of rice and customizable with various toppings for a surcharge, and were called to the pick-up counter fairly quickly. The decor and Hawaiian ambiance is amazing, both inside and outside. The outside patio has heaters and the patio overlooks portions of Big Bear. Inside, you order and pay at one of three kiosks. On busy days, there may a queue line. I had the LUWOW slow cooked pulled pork with rice and diced cucumber. It was fine but nothing exceptional. Combined with the whimsical interior decor and chill staff, it's no wonder that this place earns the top rating for poke place. The Krakatoa perfectly seasoned poke bowl comes with a generous serving of sashimi grade wild caught ahi, which is so fresh, tender yet succulently tasty bursting with flavors. The vibes are here, the boys up front are hilarious and friendly! It's a self order place with 3 kiosk stations and one line funneling us in. The wait wasn't long, but maybe because we came on a weekday. I ordered the Pele because I wanted to taste the tuna instead of having all these other yummy sauces on top. The ahi tuna is very fresh and tender, definitely get this if you want a more ahi tuna forward dish. My partner had the Cabo and he enjoyed the textures of this bowl. This place is such a vibe!! We swung by here as our final meal in Big Bear and I'm so glad we did. They have a small parking lot to the side of the restaurant. As you walk up, you're greeted by a massive shark head and you can spot their fun desert decor like cactus and peach umbrella covers. Instantly you know you're going somewhere fun. When you walk in, you stand in a line to order your food off a screen, and they call your name when your order is ready. There are QR codes so you can order a drink while waiting and you'll be entertained by the quirky surfer bro who's calling out names when people's drinks are ready. Everyone is donned with Hawaiian shirts and look genuinely happy to work there. There's a big outdoor patio with those peach umbrella covers to provide some shade, as well as seating inside. It kinda feels like you're in Disneyland because there's so much decor and so many things to look at. While waiting to order food, I ordered the island style cold brew with macadamia nut milk. It was good! We also got a tropical gangster, a frozen drink with passion orange and guava and it was the perfect drink to sip on for a hot day. For food, we got the pele poke bowl and the cabo poke bowls. The portions weren't big, they come in small bowls, and you're paying about $20 each for them, but they were surprisingly good. Not the best poke ever, but good enough for Big Bear. Both bowls had ahi but different flavorings and toppings. STEPH JUDGEMENT: Amazing vibe and decor with fast-casual food and drinks. Some friends told us about this place so of course we had to check it out during our time in Big Bear. It makes an impact as soon as you pull into the driveway; that giant shark head entrance is something else. The amazing decor continues inside, like a mixed media tiki fever dream. So much fun and cool stuff to look at everywhere. There was a strong incense smell, though, which I didn't care for. Their patio with the lake view was very nice, especially at sunset. Can't say we were fans of their touchscreen kiosk ordering system. We'd come on a Monday night so it wasn't crowded at all, but all three screens were occupied and it was taking forever! During peak times the wait must be interminable. Even though we'd looked at the menu beforehand and knew what we wanted (at least the food), it still took a little while to navigate, since we couldn't really see descriptions of the different sauces. Luckily a staff member was on hand to answer questions and help with the ordering, but it was still slow going. They must have more staff for peak times. Once you order, you find a seat and they'll announce when your food & drinks are ready over the PA system, usually adding a funny twist to your name. Fun, but the constant announcements don't make for a relaxing atmosphere. We shared the Malibu bowl (tofu, cucumbers,) plus Pele sauce for a little extra heat. We weren't terribly hungry so we shared it. Very tasty and nice that they offer a vegetarian option. As for drinks, I got the Caribbean Queen, and hubby got the Shark Attack. Yummy, but pretty much boozy milkshakes. They didn't taste terribly strong so we decided to share one more cocktail that was not creamy and slushy. We went with the Whytiki, which the friendly bartender told us was their version of a Mai Tai, It was good, but it didn't quiiiiite scratch that tiki itch for us. I wouldn't consider this a true tiki bar, more like a tiki-themed fast casual restaurant that serves tiki-like drinks. All the bowls, plates, and cups were disposable; I guess that cuts down on staffing (like the touchscreens), but it emphasized the fast casualness of it all. This place just amazes me. I mean the big giant shark head as you walk in, at Big Bear? Unheard of. This was our first time trying this poke joint. And honestly, getting a poke bowl at Big Bear woul not be my first choice of dinner, but this might be our go to place from now on! Our party had little ones that needs stroller and high chair and this place is definitely accessible and accommodating for all ages. They were even kind enough to notify us to go ahead and grab a dining table with our stroller as you have to place the order via a self serve tablet. They also serve alcoholic beverages! Basically after you order, they'll call your name with a Hawaiian groovy twist to it, and you grab your own utensils, napkins, and water on a separate area. And then off to enjoy your food. They have 3 different dining areas, out on the patio, inside dining with varying table sizes, chairs, and booth, and a backyard with a nice enclosed grassy area with standing tables only. Again, the vibes here are really great! So detailed and unique! So the food, we ordered the Cuba and the Krakatoa, both have white rice with tuna but different mixture of sauces. Both bowls were delicious and tuna was cut into little cubes and are fresh! We ordered the grilled teriyaki rice for the kids that came with a mayo dipping sauce and pickled pineapple with a bit of a kick. Tropicali prides itself as the top-ranked restaurant in California per Yelp, so I had to give it my assessment. Also, they present their laurels of achieving top status among all poke restaurants in the United States per Yelp. That naturally prompted me to compare their poke to others I had elsewhere. I got the pele bowl: ahi tuna topped with cucumbers, sweet onions, and a spicy sauce over rice. The poke was delicious and had a nice texture with just the right degree of chewiness. Each tuna piece tasted refreshing with the lightly spicy sauce. The bowl probably could've had a larger portion size for the price, but it was still solid. Due to the restaurant's popularity, Tropicali maintains an almost perfect rating with its thousands of reviews, but I still feel that I've had better poke in Oahu. Customer service was great. One staff member was enthusiastic and friendly; he showed us that we could order drinks online while we wait in line for food. When your orders are ready, someone using the restaurant's sound system affectionately announces that your food has "washed ashore." I also saw staff members having fun conversations with other customers, so I was glad with the overall friendliness. The restaurant ambience is highly decorative with a Pacific Islander theme. A shark's mouth acts as a provocative entrance to the restaurant, but the atmosphere is laid back and fun. Bustling with customers, it's a nice place to eat with friends and family. Unfortunately, in my experience, the restaurant lacked in cleanliness. Our table had a view of Big Bear Lake. However, we saw a few ants on the table along with small bugs by the windows. It seemed that they should have more frequent cycles of cleaning as many people visit here to eat. However, it did look like one staff member had a towel to wipe tables after we had left. Overall, I'm surprised that the Yelp community's favorite poke restaurant lies in Big Bear Lake. It's not convenient to arrive here, so I ponder why and how the restaurant has thousands of high reviews. Nonetheless, I can say that Tropicali serves the best poke I've ever had in Southern California. However, I was sadly surprised that our tables weren't the cleanest. First, I don't think I got any pics of food, but looks like there are plenty already here. Came to BB for the wife's bday and on one of our days we stopped here at friends' recommendation. This place is it's own vibe. Very busy, and you do all your own waiting. You stand in line to order at a kiosk, then wait for your name to get called to come up and get it. Drink and food announcements are fun, loud and really give that mix of laid back and party vibe at the same time. Friends advised us to get an "off menu" item but the problem is there's no way to order "off menu" because of the automated style of ordering. However, I spoke to a guy and told him what we were looking for and we lucked out--it was added to the menu because it was so popular. 4 of us. Ordered 2 teriyaki chickens (I forget their name) and two "Jawaiians" which is teriyaki and Jamaican jerk chicken. I'm only sometimes a teri fan because of the sweetness, but it fit my mood that day and was really good. Traditional, nothing that stood it out from other good teri's, but it WAS a good teri. Not dry at all. I absolutely loved the jerk. The sauce didn't look that appealing, but man it was delicious and spicier than expected. I'm a heatseeker so can handle HOT hot--this wasn't that. But this is hotter than the average person will be expecting. That's a good thing for me. The pork WAS a little dry and could use a bit more of the sauce, but the flavor was great. Wife ordered the Tiki Tea and the flavor did not agree with anyone at the table. It ended up getting dumped, unfortunately. Just not a good mix of flavors. The non-alcoholic drinks start around 6 bucks for a small plastic cup, just a heads up. The alcoholic drinks (not beer) start somewhere around 18 bucks. Due to their size and poor reception of the tea, I saved my money. Another person with us got the NA pina and we weren't that impressed with it, either. Food is great, drinks def need a lowered expectation. Thankfully the food is what I rate on with the heaviest weight. You have to fight your your table, it's not a big place and people are taking the chairs all over so you also have to fight for chairs--not extra chairs--any chairs. If you can get it to go and eat at your leisure, it will be much less stressful. Staff was great. This place has such a great, chill, laid-back vibe! We went on a Sunday night, and it was pretty empty, which made for a really relaxed experience. Ordering is done through a kiosk, which was super easy. While we were looking over the menu, an employee noticed we were considering one of the really spicy options and kindly recommended that we go with something else instead. We really appreciated her attentiveness and the recommendation--it ended up being a great choice! They also have free water available inside, which was a nice touch. The drinks were okay, but I did feel like some of the menu items had more coconut than I expected. That's partly on me because I could have asked for it to be removed, but I didn't think it would be as noticeable as it was. Both were super loaded with ahi tuna, crunch, and lots of flavor. We also had a desert that Colin brought out for us and recommended and I can't remember what it was called but it was so delicious and unique. The decor and structure of this restaurant is part of what makes it a 5 star. As soon as you're walking up you enter through the legendary shark mouth and then immerse yourself is the tropical aromas as soon as you walk inside. There is a mixture of tiki/colorful and ethnic decor everywhere that makes you feel like you're in Hawaii and Mexico at the same time. Since my last visit they moved into a new location which is a big upgrade! It's a super fun, quirky (you literally walk in through a shark's mouth), awesome tropical vibe and has way more interior and exterior seating than their old location. When you enter, you order on a touchscreen and then they'll call your name and/or number for your drinks first then your food and you walk up to the counter, get your food and then sit wherever you want - like at In&Out! I highly recommend getting their smoothies since they are DELICIOUS! Think tropical blended drinks but without the alcohol. So refreshing and you can still do the curvy drive up/down the mountain! Their poke bowls aren't as amazing as I remember sadly. They are a little too over the top in terms of strong thick sauces and bold overpowering flavors. Their pulled pork bowl was still yummy though despite all of their rice in all of our 3 bowls being a little undercooked (I prefer the fluffy sticky rice) So 5 stars for ambiance, 5 stars for service, 5 stars for drinks and 3.5 stars for food imho. I heard a lot of great things about this place on Yelp, online, and from people I know. We went on a Saturday and oh my goodness did this place have quite the line (side note drove by on Sunday morning a couple of minutes before they opened and there was already line outside!). To say this place is a "vibe" is an understatement. The people working here clearly LOVE their job, you can hear it in their voice when calling out the orders over the speaker. The ambience, decorations and experience was very cool definitely a tourist spot. I did enjoy my teriyaki bowl, the bowl was a good size and very yummy; this place was a little on the pricier side (a little less than $20 for my bowl). But overall a fun place to go. This place is full of magic. Parking can be pretty limited. Workers allow you to "create" your own parking spot as long as you're not blocking anyone. I came 10 minutes before opening hours and there was already a long line waiting to get in. They have a kiosk for ordering food and another for ordering drinks. Seating is limited considering how many people are waiting to get in. We ordered teas, poke bowls and a teriyaki chicken bowl. Everything looks small but it was actually super filling. The food and drinks were delicious. The decor is so cool. Even the bathroom is interesting. I'll also add that the customer service is superior to other places. Everyone is super friendly and welcoming. They all work very hard and efficiently. It's definitely a must try if you're in the area. read more

Ok this place rules and certainly lives up to the hype. Pivoted from another dinner option during my sister's bachelorette weekend, and we were not disappointed! Awesome food with a fair price, super cool atmosphere, and especially kind service made for a great experience. Things to know: AMAZING DRINKS (lol). I recommend getting one while waiting in line. Also, note that this place is a little non traditional- or at least that was the vibe I got. What I mean by that is you order from a kiosk (like McDonalds), and we had a hard time locating the menu (it was a QR code). But in a place that is filled with technology, it was accompanied by exceptional service. The guys working were friendly, fun, and made my sister (bride to be) feel super special! The establishment gives the vibe of SpongeBob, mixed with cool hipster tiki bar. Insane ambiance! A minute for the poke- it was outstanding. Fun flavor combos! Would go again 10/10. Only reason I'm doing 4/5 stars is due to the learning curve for locating the menu, figuring out how to order, and also all the cutlery is single use. Other than that, no notes! Vibes are a 5/5, and we like that they have chicken/pork bowls too. BUT, it's blasphemous to say that they have the #1 poke in the USA. It's way overpriced and they don't allow you to make a customized bowl. I honestly prefer going to your average poke joint where you can build your own bowl and choose your own sauces and fish. And this place does not compare to poke in Hawaii! Foodland farms has waaaay better poke that I dream about for days! read more

A must visit every time we're in Big Bear! It had been a couple years since our last visit and seems like they're redecorated and upgraded! Bigger space, cooler vibes, giant shark, and feral lake views from the patio. Stop in for delicious poke, chill vibes, and cool staff. read more
