We had the monsoon smoothie special, a light orange drink, which had lots of fruity flavor! It was really refreshing, albeit a little bit sweet. To preface this review I have been a Tropical Smoothie customer since its opening back in 2015. I really haven't stray away from what I order which is the Peanut Paradise Smoothie with extra peanut butter. I decided today,against my better judgment to stop buying the smoothie because my coworker and I ordered the same thing and got extra x3 peanut butter and the smoothie was bland and tasteless and did not taste anything like the ones made previously, to visit the store and speak to a supervisor or the owner. I figured before I write Tropical Smoothie off as choice let me stop in and tell the owner/supervisor what my concerns were. The employee at the register was anything but helpful when I asked for the supervisor. He said a supervisor was not on duty and only gave the name Mike. I asked who was the owner at which point he refused to tell me and did not want to give the full name of the supervisor. I was there willing to give this business one last chance to make amends for the terrible shake we got the week prior but couldn't even get the name of who I could speak to about the issue. Needless to say I got two half names and left disappointed because I did not accomplish what I set out to do. I was willing to get the two shakes/smoothies I went there to get and now Tropical Smoothie have lost the business of at-least 2 regular customers. I have been meaning to stop by here whenever I am in the area and just wasn't able to. I have seen a few YTCC doing mukbang on Tropical Smoothie in their areas as well. Finally I stopped in at this location on Friday 8:12:22 evening and was greeted by Annetta very sweet she walked me through it since I haven't been in a long time. I did the Smoothie Combo Avocado Grilled Cheese, Kale Apple as my side and Mango Berry Cosmo wow everything was delicious and on point. I've stopped into the Tropical Smoothie Cafe several times in the past few months. I can basically sum this place up as, "Healthy Fast Food". But can you really consider it "healthy" ? I dunno, I've seen an employee open up a huge can of DOLE pineapples to be used in the smoothies, I also know that a lot of the stuff comes into the store prepacked, so it's not as fresh as it could be. For example, yesterday I ordered a Mediterranean salad. It was various types of rice on top of a bed of spinach with bits of zucchini, red peppers, and pieces of avocado on top. Because the ingredients are shipped to the store prepackaged, the vegetables ended up being a bit wilted and mushy. Definitely not fresh. The flatbreads are decent, the smoothies are ok also. I've tried the Strawberry Limeade and the Immune Booster so far. At $5.99 a piece, they are expensive. But Tropical Cafe offers coupons every time you are in, so often you'll see a smoothie for $1.99 (which is much more reasonable). In general, prices are a bit on the high side for what you receive. The place is very popular with the police and firefighters, so parking can be an issue at times (it's street parking). read more

If you want an authentic smoothie, don't go to TSC. However, if you want a soothing drink with lots of sugar where you trick yourself into thinking it's healthy, then grab a smoothie from TSC. I was downtown New Haven and wanted to grab a smoothie so my friend and I popped in. I got the strawberry banana, which like I mentioned above, was full of sugar. Tropical Smoothie Cafe definitely isn't the most premium or high-end smoothie shop in the world, but the smoothie sizes and unbeatable prices keep me coming back again and again. There isn't a dearth of smoothie places in New Haven (I've tried the smoothies at Juice Box and B-Natural, as well as Jamba Juice outside of NH), but at all of these places their smoothies are exorbitantly expensive ($8+ for a medium size!) If you order through Snackpass (10% off), the smoothies here come out to under $6 for a massive portion. However, I will point out that the smoothies here seem a little more watered down than usual (peaches and silk is so bland; perhaps the ice to fruit ratio is off), and many smoothies have the same flavor profile (for example, health nut tastes exactly like triple berry oat). In addition, Tropical Smoothie Cafe has consistency issues; sometimes their smoothies turn out amazingly rich, and other times it's watery and bland. This could be a staff training issue? I think they only have one portion size, and honestly, it's enough to be a meal. Most times, quality over quantity, but in this case, quantity is all I'm askin' for !! My favorites include: açaí berry boost, sunrise sunset, blueberry bliss, and my roommate is a big fan of the green apple matcha one. I've been going this Tropical Smoothie Cafe for over a year now and I'm continually both pleased and disappointed. The Good: This specific Tropical Smoothie Cafe is located 3 minutes walking distance from Payne Whitney Gymnasium and is walking distance from most places on the Yale campus making it very accessible and a great post-workout spot to get a protein smoothie. The smoothies are the same quality as other locations in the country, very large, often very sweet (you can ask for Splenda instead!), and a bit overpriced (7$). My two favorites are the Peanut Paradise and the Triple Berry Oat. The food is very overpriced (5$ for a banana peanut butter wrap) but if you're a bit desperate in the morning or are craving something salty to balance out the sweet smoothie, they're not a bad option. I've enjoyed the pesto chicken wrap a few times. Also worth noting: this location is very small with mostly individual bar stool type seating and only 3 small tables. The Bad: The main problem I've experienced with this specific location is the staff. I always feel as if every worker is a trainee as they rarely seem to understand their own specials and deals such as the discount for buying the reusable cup or holiday deals. I've been mischarged at least 3 times yet every time I somehow feel that it's my fault for trying to use a deal or special. My least favorite memory with this location was when I tried grabbing a smoothie after a night at the gym last year. I called when the location was 20 minutes away from closing to confirm that they would stay open for the next 10 minutes yet when I arrived with 10 minutes to go, one worker had locked the door and then when she came to see what I wanted hesitated opening the door and asked me "if I was some kind of murderer of something" before telling me that they were closed. I was super confused and and left with a bad taste in my mouth. Despite some of the poor interactions I've had with the staff at this location, Trop Smoothie is a national chain and I still enjoy their smoothies and will continue to keep coming back. I come here often. I've been coming since they've opened. But for a while I feel they have been slipping. I'm currently in store waiting for a wrap that I ordered 11 mins ago. I ended up getting it 16 mins later. When I asked how much longer would it be i was told to just continue to wait. When I got my wrap it was oddly warm but the inside was super cold. I had already left so re-ordering and waiting ANOTHER 15 mins wasn't an option. It's sad because I came in earlier in the week and basically had gotten the same experience except I called my order in 45 mins prior. I understand we are going through a rough time. I know it's the time of covid-19 but the service is HORRIBLE . Been there twice since the pandemic, and both times each group of workers did not know how to attend to there customers during this time . Smoothie was watery, curb side pick up was not on time, numerous of customers were walking in one by one complaining about how their food was for pick up 20 min ago. Also they were not bringing it to your car . The workers inside both days were complaining . 7+ customers in the line left due to long wait just to put a order in. I made it inside then had to wait 45 min. If I didn't pay already I would have easily left and went to a different location to eat elsewhere. Tropical smoothie cafe is delicious. I only get the smoothies here, haven't tried the food yet. I usually add the boosters, from vitamins to protein. The orange ginger is one of my favorites. The service is phenomenal , they bring the drinks to you.. they walk the drink to you! Consistent customer service in the states is hard to come by! We love this place. While I have never been to their location, our office orders from here at least 2-3 times a week and the food is superb! Working at a wellness center in East Rock, we always have a difficult time finding enough variety in the healthy food options around the office and usually end up eating less-than-satisfying sandwiches and salads from the surrounding markets. Tropical Smoothie Cafe has given us this much-needed variety and we can't get enough. The smoothies are HUGE and delicious (24 oz.!!) and are a meal in themselves. The "Avocadolada" is one of our faves (as well as the excellent fish tacos and Thai chicken wrap). We order online and our food is delivered within the hour -- and there's never been an error (except one time they forgot to label which green smoothie had the extra protein boost -- it happens). I appreciate that their smoothies can be ordered without added sugar for those of us trying to get our shit together. The staff was super friendly and helpful. I had the Thai chicken salad and it was eh. The chicken was processed, not breast meat. The dressing clearly is loaded with corn syrup-- as I poured it over my salad, I was reminded of Aunt Jemima. The salad, which features no other sweet ingredients like fruit, has a whopping 22 grams of sugar in it (according to their website), which I imagine come from the dressing alone. Kind of a bummer for a place that is marketing itself as health food. It would be great if they could serve dressings with *less* sugar than a Hershey Bar (17g)-- maybe some olive oil and vinegar perhaps? I go here daily as it's my healthier option for lunch and every time there's unfortunately a complaint. From one of the girls explaining that probiotics are to help your nails grow (probiotics are a digestive enzyme) and when I want to substitute an ingredient for another. Ie. Take out celery and put in cucumber. I'm charged extra for the substitute. To asking another server "what was that you just put in" and she said "sugar". Why would you put sugar in my juice???? Terrible customer service straight from management all the way down. Spiteful to customers they deem "rude" or "privileged". Sub par sanitary as in they only rinse out the blenders after use, they don't actually clean them or the lids. Lids of the blender you can actually take your nail and scrape the gunk out. Supplements and powders are not covered at night so they allow bugs to crawl in and out and there are lots of fruit flies. Manager has given personal information out about customers who complain and staff she doesn't like. Thaw out chicken in the dish sink and anything else that needs thawed. Now, they have about a good 7 staff members behind the counter working but again, line still not moving. Come to find out they were doing online orders. When they told us they were doing online orders we asked if they can alternate to serve people waiting and they said no. Very unorganized and poor customer service.. Part of my order was delivered to the wrong person, which is the responsibility of Doordash. But I was told to call the store for my refund and that they should be able to assist me. "Shivan" who answers the phone very rudely tells me "its busy, we don't have time to deal with this, I told my manager, she's not here, I don't know her schedule, I don't know when she'll be in again, I don't know when she'll process your refund." All I got were vague answers and "when we get to it," after hearing every excuse in the book, you're bound to get frustrated. I hate being a Karen,, but anyone would get upset when being dismissed and not given any clue on whats going to happen next.. And when I call Doordash to get them to remedy this and they reiterate since I ordered through Tropical Smoothie, they have to refund me.. I had them put me on a three-way call with Shivan so they can see the vague answers I was getting; only to hear him talk badly about me to the doordash rep on the phone (unbeknownst to him I was listening) and that is jarring and unacceptable customer service on their part. I had to sit their quietly as he reiterated his excuses he told me and said he wasn't going to blow up his managers phone because I was being persistent and annoying. I paid for my food and it did not get delivered, this place had a responsibility to refund me PROMPTLY. It was my first and last time wanting to order from there after the way they treated me.
