When we arrived on 03/05 at 3:00pm our room wasn't ready yet due to a plumbing issue caused by previous guests. The Property Manager had texted us at 1:30pm alerting about the inconvenience, so we were somehow prepared. They understood our concern after a long trip and assured that they were working on the problem in order to solve it in the shortest possible time. At 4:14pm the issue was fixed and we could check in our room #12. It was a very nice, spacious, clean and comfortable room, nicely and tastefully renovated. We stayed in cottage 2. Our first night a raccoon greeted us when we parked. The door code which worked earlier didn't work. We tried a few numbers and got the housekeeping code to get in. We were told the housekeeping staff would reset it but the ladies spoke limited English so explaining was difficult. The place was very buggy inside and the bugs weren't swept up on a daily basis. One morning while getting ready for the day the water shut off. My husband spoke to the plumber who said we should have been notified but we weren't. Luckily I was just finishing up or the morning would have been ruined. A heads up would have been nice. Tropical Cottages was a good place to stay for the two days that our family was in the Florida keys. We stayed in Cottage #3. About an hour before arriving, they texted us our door code. It was clean and cool when we arrived. The cottage was small, but it was enough room for our family of four to shower and sleep. The check in was 100% contactless, which made it easy. There is a tiki bar right outside and a taco truck delicious food (La Isla Taco Grill). The only negative thing I have to say is, the communication with them wasn't as good a I would've hoped. It was a small thing, so I didn't feel that it warranted a 4 star review. Overall, we had a really good experience at Tropical Cottages. When I called for reservations I asked if they had anything with two bedrooms and two bathrooms. I was told that they had purchased a house on the water that met that requirement. After paying in full in advance we arrived to find a two story house that had been decided into five separate rental units. Our unit had two bedrooms and one bathroom. The entrance door had a large glass panel with mini blinds between the glass. The mini blinds had collasped inside the two glass panels with no way of providing privacy. The ice make did not work and worst of all we left a packaged loaf of bread on counter and mice ate through package and got into the bread! read more

We stayed here aug3-5 so I could take my daughter on a snorkeling trip before school starts. Really, I was looking for a cheap, CLEAN place for us to sleep as we would be gone during the day. Tropical cottages was very nice for the price. Its secluded-ish little cottages (some are multi-unit) gave it an "old florida" charm. If you are looking for a sterile, modern, Marriott-esque accommodation...keep looking, this ain't your huckleberry. THE GOOD: Super clean. In room amenities included a microwave, fridge, coffee pot (bring your own coffee and 4 cup filters), crockery, and the usual hotel soaps and such. The old florida charm can't be beat. Being in marathon, it's outside of the insanity of key west but easy to get there when you want it. THE BAD: The fixtures in the bathroom are somewhat dated, there is wear and tear in the rooms that hasn't been addressed as a big chain hotel would have. Cottage 14, the bed by the window, the mattress is shot, but the one by the bathroom is fine. VERDICT: Would I stay there again? Absolutely. read more

Discovered this place while looking for a place to overnight in the Keys on Airbnb. They are on hotels.com & Expedia. They have 12 cottages of different sizes, we had Cottage 2 a cute little room with a King bed (comfortable), sofa, bathroom, kitchenette with dishes and refrigerator and a nice little private patio. You check in at the office, they give you a code for your door. They have a food truck that makes tacos, burritos, fries, etc and a full tiki bar with tables and happy hour. The only bad thing is the Wi-Fi only works in the common area & tiki bar not in your room. I would definitely stay here again if in the area. read more

Reserved a cottage thru Hotels.com. When our "room" was ready we were sent to an offsite property, where the room was a bedroom on the 2nd floor of house which you entered in the back of the garage. The only access was to climb rickety hand-built stairs. When I called to complain because my husband couldn't do the stairs, I was told they had nothing else available and I should cancel. When I cancelled, I was told I would not get a refund because it was a non-refundable room even though Tropical Cottages confirmed they did not have the room I booked available. Super cute cottages but it's super hot in them. Our cottage had only 1 wall unit a/c that was put down all the way down to 65 and was super hot and humid. They brought as a cheaply Lasko Fan that barely even blown any air out at the highest speed. The cottages had no insulation in them at all, just plain wood build frame. We only lasted an 1 hour at the most asked the owners for the refund and went back home. At least we had an option to leave since we live in Deerfield Beach, if you are coming out of town and can't stand the heat this isn't the best option in my opinion. read more

My significant other and I stayed one night in cabin #1 (April 2024) and were Very Pleased with the place. I too read the reviews and was a bit nervous, but A Lot has changed since those were written. It is a clean, charming place that is well maintained; our cabin had a private patio that was a Perfect place for morning coffee. It is a quiet setting (except for the occasional airplane) oh yes and the rooster ( in case you didn't know, there are roosters all over the Keys); I grew up on a farm so for me that was kind of Fun. This place is perfect for a short stay. Everyone is very nice and the cottages are very clean. They have a nice size tiki bar that is in the common area that you can hang at and drink and relax. We felt this motel was a good find. The price point was affordable and they allow 2 pets of any size for an additional $20 a day per pet. We stayed over Christmas and our families had 4 different bungalows across the property. #2 was the most updated and nicest of the bungalows. It had a truly private patio and was tucked in a corner. Parking was probably about 30 paces away across a little courtyard. They have abbreviated kitchen in there which is a refrigerator with freezer, a toaster oven and a sink. One of the nights it rained my father in law got dripped on while in bed. #4 was the one my husband and I stayed in. It was right next to the bar and you had to go through a maze of hedges to reach the door from the parking lot. The plants and property were manicured very nicely but it was hella annoying to go around those plants every time. The room itself was nice. The bed was old and sunk in. The room was mostly clean. There was a refrigerator with freezer - and bread popup toaster and a sink. Felt dated compared to #2 #5 was next to us and our family was in there. It's a mirror or #4 but the kitchen counter was super high and slightly different. The bathroom door would get stuck when you try to open and close it. Also, dated. Felt dated compared to #2 #11 was the last one our family had. Closest to the road - so you will potentially hear cars coming in and out but also furthest from the bar. It was small and dark inside. The bathroom door was a inset door and was stuck, so they had to use the bathroom with the door open the whole time. It had a minibar type fridge and sink. The bar just served beer and wine. They had happy hour beers and regular priced beers. They let you bring your own beer, wine or alcohol to the bar as well. The foodtruck was not open on Tuesday and not open on Christmas day. We had onion rings from the food truck the first night and they were pretty good. I didn't have anything else that I could comment on. It smelled good when we left. The motel does not have a pool nor does it have any views. We walked our dogs on the side of the road, around a bank, and along the drive next to the motel. There was trash all along the parking lot for the motel and it was quite unpleasant to walk them. I would recommend heading towards the main road and bank where they keep it pretty clean. You can walk down to the water where a boat ramp used to be. They closed it off and there is a building under construction at the end of the road. It was nice to stand and look at the water from that location or maybe even fish if you wanted to do that. But there were definitely nicer spots to go to as well. On Christmas Day, there were no staff at the hotel. There were two sets of guests that arrived and were left to fend for themselves for check in. They also were staying in hidden rooms (not bungalows) which are next to the office through an unmarked door. These guests were just wandering the property trying to find their rooms because they had no idea where it was. They also mentioned that there was another key left in the box for another set of guests set to arrive that day. I understand it was Christmas Day, but it just seemed sketchy and unsecure. It was great for us because of the price and the fact we could bring our dogs. But in the future, I would probably stay at a place that had a pool or at least views of the ocean. Great for big family events! We were able to have 4 family come to this place and stay. They have a grill and tables and a couch. Very nice for hanging out with everyone. read more

This was the WORST lodging I have ever had. For starters, Cottage 11 had no indoor bathroom. It was outside with a 6 foot fence around it (with crawling BUGS). There was no private shower, just a shower head on the outside wall. There was no drain on the floor so the shower water puddled up and covered the entire floor. There were no electrical outlets, no hair dryer, no counter space and no racks for towels. Getting to the commode in the middle of the night involved walking on a slippery floor IN THE RAIN. Outrageous! The bedroom had a very uncomfortable mattress which sagged in the middle and left me with a painful back. There were no mirrors in the bedroom and no coffee for the coffee maker. We were awoken at 4 am by the resident rooster which crowed for 3 hours. We decided one night was enough. We had left a message for the owner when we first arrived that we were not happy with the accommodations and wanted to cancel the 2nd night. No response. I called the emergency number listed by the door and heard "We are away from the phones". What if this had been a true emergency? I left a message we wished to cancel and wanted a refund for the second night. We also emailed them. No response. Finally they responded there would be no refund. This disgusting cottage cost $600 for two nights. The management doesn't care about its customers. DO NOT STAY HERE!!! read more

WARNING! After booking this location six months ago for a stay in July, the owner messaged me today to say she has decided to increase the rate and not honor the rate I paid at booking. For our three night stay that was already paid for and confirmed, she requested an extra $600 or she would cancel. After refusing, she canceled our stay and wished us "good luck" finding another location for the busiest time of year. Do not trust that your booking will be honored. What a scam. Don't judge a book by it's cover!!!! Located off of US-1 this cute destiny is surprisingly quiet, cozy and clean. It's a great location in the middle of everything. As for the cottages they are renovated, yet modern with the outdoor feel. I stayed in cottage #8 (shown in picture) this has to be the most intimate place I've stayed in all week in the keys. Being the clean freak that I am, I was pleasantly shocked how clean the cottage was. (thank you) The toilet is inside with granite countertops and the shower is outside. Being a city girl I hesitated at first but this shower became a favorite key factor. The cottage also included a full kitchen, dishwasher, large fridge, plates, glasses etc.. Did I mention the king size bed? Yes all this in a little cottage!! Parking is located on site for free. They have a great BBQ grill for use free as well. As for customer service... We had a confusion at first with our check in date the nice lady seemed a bit unorganized. Sheila the owner was very helpful when taking my reservation and did me a favor. She trust's and looks out for her customers, very old school service:) Nice Touch! Overall everyone is super nice and means well. The breakfast can use some attention. This was the worse place we have ever stayed at. Put it this way, we checked in and had to check out 5 hours later. The room had no insulation. The AC was on at full force and the room was at 90 degrees the entire day and early evening on August 8, 2020. We asked for a fan or something, that didn't help. We found 5 dead worms around the bed on the floor, meaning the room wasn't cleaned. I was with my 2 daughters, husband and my dog. We couldn't sleep there. It was really hot and nasty. I went to the front desk to get refunded for the room and dog fee for the two days. They couldn't help me. The owner, Sheila would be the only person to refund us. So they gave me her email to write yo her. I have written to her 3 times in three different days and no answer. I have called to speak to her and she's on vacation. It's been over a week already and nobody has responded to us. We are very disappointed with this establishment. Don't stay here! read more

I give the Tropical Cottages a roundup 4. When booking and staying at the Tropical Cottages you really need to have the right expectations. This is NOT a destination place. There is no pool. There is no beach. You are on a very short side street not far from US-1. The Tropical Cottages is a launch from location. It is a place to crash. I stayed here a couple of nights when I had some random days off and wanted to get some kayaking in mid Keys. It was exactly what I was expecting looking at the pictures and reading the reviews. The cabins/cottages are rustic! A fine hotel or even motel this is not. The place is a real throwback to when cars had fins on them ... and that is fine with me. They have a bar that is wine and beer only, but very affordable, which is under a giant tiki. It is a very chill vibe. It is a shame they don't have a full liquor license. Within walking distance of Tropical Cottages is a grill and bar that has good food. It is also within walking distance of a Hammock Park where you can walk around and get to see what the Keys were like for the people that pioneered and settled them. I would go back to Tropical Cottages anytime ...at an affordable rate. read more

We booked this room more than a month ahead of time. We received a message stating that we would receive an email with instructions on how to register "virtually" which would have included us having to send an image of our drivers license to them. We did not receive the email, when we eventually reached the manager (see below), they claimed to have sent a text to our phone, but they were using our home phone which is a landline and does not accept text messages, so there is no quality control on their communications. When we were two+ hours away we called the contact number, never receiving a call back. When we arrived the office was closed (apparently COVID is an excuse to not staff the office, although the food truck was outside surrounded by unmasked people, in Florida, in August 2021). There were three phone numbers on the door, the number we had called and gotten no response, and two others. We called one of the two additional numbers and reached the manager. The manager informed us that the property where we were staying was at another address (5305 Ocean Terrace) not at the site of the Tropical Cottages, but half a mile away across US 1 directly behind two strip malls. The manager then proceeded to tell us to "be aware" that when we go up the stairs to our room that the railing on the second floor was missing and to exercise caution. He then further stated that the workmen would be putting the rail up the next day, on a room we were paying for during our vacation. At that point we told the manager that this was unaccepatable and the worst experience we had had travelling. (We are both well travelled, including most of the Continental US, Canada, Mexico, Bermuda, Bahamas, Iceland, Cuba, Germany, England, Kuwait, Dubai, Iraq, Korea). After asking for alternate reservations (being told they were "fully booked"), requesting a fee reduction (we were told to take it as is for full price, or leave it), and then asking to speak to the owner (we were told the manager was not allowed to give out her number and he would relay our request for a call, but that she would say the same thing he had already stated), we informed him that we would be complaining that the room was not ready. At that time the manager told us he was cancelling our reservations and refunding our money, leaving us without a place to stay....in Marathon Key, Florida...after a 10 1/2 hour drive. (It was apparent that the owner was listening to the conversation, I doubt the manager who did not have the ability to provide contact information for the owner, did have the authority cancel a prepaid reservation without consulting them). I advise you to find another place to stay, be treated with respect like all people deserve. read more

Awful!! Unit was dirty and had dried ketchup on the counter, two air conditioning units because 1 didn't work and you have to walk around the second one. No where to plug the coffee pot in but that didn't matter because no coffee was provided. Super loud being right by the tiki hut. We checked out early because it was so awful and then was told that we would not be getting any money back because it's their holiday weekend policy but when I talked to the manager he said there is no such policy that is just the everyday policy. We checked in after hours and we would have immediately checked out if there had been anyone there to do so and left by 7am, and the owner still would not give us any money back! I came down to Marathon for the mini lobster season. My husband and I decided to stay here because it was available last minute, had kayak water access at the end of the street and allowed pets. I thought the cottage, number 6, was adorable. There was plenty of space with a sofa and table. The room was recently tiled and the bathroom was remodeled. The bed was comfortable and there were sliding doors going to a semi private outside seating area. I never saw a bug in the cottage. We were given 2 parking spaces for our unit. There is a nice community area with a bar and hammocks all around. We didn't utilize it but I bet there was great conversation. The staff were polite and even helped us when we lost our truck keys in the ocean. We brought our corgi with us since they are pet friendly! The location is great with everything around. Yes, the airport is nearby so you can hear planes. No different than our place back home so it didn't bother us at all. There is water access at the end of the street. You can drive up and put your kayaks in the water and bring the truck back. It takes like one minute to walk back to the end of the street. We found lobster that was undersized. We kayaked a few miles out near all the boats and found one lobster of size. If you have a boat, you could technically anchor it and keep it there in the water at the end of the street. There would not be a way to walk to the boat but we considered it for next year. The docks are privately owned. I would recommend this place for someone who is not looking for a 5 star hotel. There is an island time feel to this place. It was pricey during the season but off season their rates are good. There is a large unit that has 2 other units attached which make it a 3 bedroom apartment basically. Full kitchen, dining room and sunk down living room. It is super cute! It is true that one of the units has a outside shower and toilet, but it is fenced in and no one can see you. They might hear you though :) Our unit was on the warm side. A smaller unit may keep the temperature down with less space. They are in the process of upgrading the units. Hint: If you are particular about having cold a/c, ask them about having a smaller room. The bigger unit we were in just didn't insulate well. This is a chill location with lots of great restaurants nearby. Best of all, pets are welcome! read more

I booked a cottage at the beginning of October for X$; our card was authorized at that time. The day of our reservation (15 days later) I received 2 emails. The first stated there was a problem with the card and we needed to resolve within 48 hours, the second came through 2 mins later confirming the cancellation. I called to sort things out and was told they had no knowledge of our reservation and we would have to pay more for the last one available. I was also advised wed have to wait until the next morning to sort things out but would still have to pay again that night. Next morning we talked to the other person who tried to say we were upgraded and got a great deal, they also said they called thousands of times but I had no voicemails from them and no missed calls from their number or area code- she didnt even try to make it right but rather tried to place the blame on us. The cottage itself is cute, but had a really hard bed and really loud window unit A/C , we were only staying over night so did not experience much of the scenery which seemed nice enough with a little bar area. read more

Stayed here multiple times over the past 5 years. Tropical Cottages used to be great but now it's weathered and falling apart, it's time to upgrade and fix the issues with the cottages. First night of this stay was fine, everything was great. We had power and hot water! The next morning after a quick trip to the beach, we returned to the room to clean up before lunch. I turned on the tv and heard a loud "POP!" All the power in the room goes out. Heard the "POP!" again and looked behind the tv to see bare wires hanging from the wall accompanied by the lovely aroma of burnt electrical. I reported the problem to the front desk. They sent maintenance to fix it, took about 2 1/2 hrs, front desk comped us 2 beers while we waited. Went about our day. Returned to the cottage later that evening to only half the power functioning (no bathroom lights and the back half of the cottage had no working outlets). Also, the hot water had ceased to work. It was late in the evening so there was no way to report the problem. Next day still no hot water. 1 and 1/2 days with half power and no hot water is unacceptable. They offered to upgrade our cottage but we had already had enough of the substandard room conditions. So we packed up all of our stuff and decided to check out and find a new hotel. We emailed hoping to get one of our nights comped due to the inconvenience of not having power or hot water. Needless to say we were met with hostility and no refund. The email we did receive from the "owner" stated that we would not receive any form of reimbursement because we "checked in too early" and that the "cottage was being worked on prior to our arrival". Also, since we arrived "early" they were "unable to complete the maintenance before our allotted check-in time". Why would a business book a cabin that has electrical problems? Why would a business check customers into a room that has the potential to catch on fire...? How can you blame the customer for the repairs not being completed? Why is it the customers fault that there is no hot water? Like I said, this place used to be great but it has fallen on hard times. Honestly, I used to love staying here but after this visit I can say that I will not be returning. If you're going to Marathon stay at the Hampton or Holiday Inn Express, don't bother with The Tropical Cottages. They need a major overhaul and a new staff. read more

My Husband and I came down from Wisconsin. We booked through booking.com. We are easy going laid back people and far from fussy but I can say I would never ever stay here. Came into the office to check in. No smile, no welcome from the woman behind the counter. She warmed up after awhile . She checked us in, pointed down the road and said the blue cottage is yours. We got into room, checked it out and thought it is doable. Husband said let's go down to the water and check it out. The water was gross. Couldn't even put your feet in if you wanted to. As we made our way back to the cottage we noticed stacks of mattresses and box springs, among other trash. That raised my radar immediately. We got back into cottage and started inspecting for bed bugs. We opened futon and the double bed up. I wanted to puke when I lifted sheets and mattresses and found little worms everywhere. I immediately said "we are out of here!!" Loaded up the car and I went directly to the office and said to the lady that checked us in "I can not stay here, there are little worms in the bed and the futon." She said, " oh I'm sorry, we will come and change your sheets". I told her NO. the worms are even in-between the mattress n box spring. We are checking out. Gave the key back and she said she would email the owner and let them know. We called booking.com and let them know we wanted a refund, they called the lady and she said they would upgrade us to a better room. Ummm no thanks! We were refunded or $335.00 for 2 nights within an hour of checking out. For that I am grateful. Perfect little getaway. Cottage 3 with a Full mini kitchen, it had a great amount of space! Perfect for 2 on a honeymoon! We loved the hammocks in the Tiki Bar area, they even had live music Friday, Saturday, and Sunday night! The Owner and Staff were all super friendly. I feel torn as I write this review. Honestly, this is a hard one. We decided to stay at Tropical Cottages on our way back to Boca Raton from Key West. We found this place, and from the website, it looks adorable. While I will say it doesn't outright say that there is a beach on the property, it does sort of imply that there is something substantial near the Gulf of Mexico. To be abundantly clear, when they say there is a kayak and boat launch on the Gulf, keep in mind that it is only a small area where a kayak or boat could be launched. Nothing more. Also, they boast that they are walking distance from many attractions, including beaches. Unless your idea of a Florida Keys "attraction" is the coin laundromat, or the nearby bank drive-thru, you are a short drive, NOT walk, to local attractions. We stayed in Cottage #8, and while I notice another reviewer also stayed in Cottage #8 and wrote a glimmering review on it, my experience was much different. Yes, it is cute and charming. The outside of all of the cabins (sorry, I'm a Michigan gal and my first instinct is to refer to them as cabins!) are cute... pastel, coastal-y, beachy, etc. But they are also pretty rundown. I felt that they could really make some very cheap updates, and still keep the charm. For instance, I could honestly have done without the tiny flat screen TV with cable, and would rather have a non-tattered, cleaner looking bedspread that actually fits the bed. The shower was outside, which I find kind of cool, although you're going to definitely want to shower in flip flops; but, another cheap fix would be to put something in where you can sit your shampoo, soap, etc. There was a really old shower caddy that was all full of rust... again, these are literally $15.00 at Target. I just bought one for my own house! It's just the little things that could be EASILY updated, or cared for, that would have made my stay more enjoyable. And these cottages run from $100 to over $200/night! I guess that's what gets me. If you want to charge that much, then PLEASE take some of that money and clean up the place a little. Also, if you see their negative reviews on TripAdvisor, you will notice the owner actually responds to them, and she is blatently rude and does not care for suggestions, which kind of irks me because some of the reviews could help them out. Will I stay here again? No, probably not. If they gave me more of a reason to want to spend the same amount of money that I would at one of the nicer hotels, I would definitely consider it, but the general raggediness and shabby-not-chicness has really turned me off from this place. read more

We stayed in Cottage 3 and it was everything we needed an more. It had a stove, a full size fridge and freezer, a microwave and a toaster over. It also had a shower and nice big bed, a tv and a couch. Yes it was a little dated but who cares, it was pretty clean and the AC blew nice clean cold air. It was a cute little place and really served all our needs. It was a shame that the weather was not nicer, because we could not use any of the other ammenities like the nice chairs in front of the cottage or the little Tiki Bar or the the hanging chairs. If you are looking for the Ritz this is not the place for you, however if you are looking for a place to rest your head and make a meal this will do you just fine. The place is easy to find. The people that wrote the bad reviews were probably the same people that like to stay in the Holiday Inn or looking for a bed in breakfast. For us we were just fishing in the Keys looking for a little Ma and Pa place to lay our heads and cook a meal. We will stay here again! read more

LOVED this place. Cozy, cute, comfortable, charming, yes I realize that's alot of C's but really this place was an "A" and now I see this sounds cheesy but oh well. I love places that feel a little old, have some charm and aren't cookie cutter, this place was it. It was quiet, and unassuming with a tiki bar on the property and lots of sofas, chairs and hammocks for relaxation. Sadly I did not get to use them due to time constraints but they sure looked inviting. Only stayed for a day but I will be back here when visiting the keys in the future. Not far from Bahia Honda state park and reasonably priced (I went in June). Loved it. Felt like a little home away from home. Btw, I stayed in cottage #9, it was clean, with an indoor shower and lovely decor. No issues at all. read more

The location is a bit odd but the cabins are clean and the staff are great. This isn't resort living but it is a cool spot if you just need a place to stay at while visiting the Keys with a bed, bathroom, and small kitchen. You really don't want to spend too much time indoors anyways so if you're looking for an affordable spot to stay this is it. It's quaint and cute and is in the middle of the Keys which makes access. The staff were super friendly and helpful in helping us with anything we needed or questions we had. Bring food as they have a fridge there a micro wave, toaster and coffee maker. The Food choices in the area are pretty lame so the better prepared you are the better. Some of the cabins here have gas stoves. Inquire with the staff upon reservation time. read more
