What a glorious experience. It was the first time of deep sea fishing for two of us. We not only caught tons of fish but got wonderful lessons from Eric as to how to do it right. He is a great teacher, always watching and correcting you so that you don't develop bad habits, but doing so with a ready smile. He is also very ethical and would only let us keep porgies (11 inches +) and sea bass (16.5 inches +) that meet regulation. Our end of the day haul was 30 large sized fish which was way beyond expectation. Most importantly we had 6 hours of pure fun. Also, his boat is extremely clean and well kept. If you ever want to go deep sea fishing, look no further and just call Eric / Captain Fish! I have already recommended him to all my friends who are chomping at the bit to go. They are, I bet a little envious as well - wondering how a novice like me could so much fish. All credit goes to Eric!

(The crew made all the difference) The boat is beautiful, clean, fully accommodating with stocked bathrooms (had sinks and soap!). The crew provided everything we needed, plus educated us and helped us every step of the way. We caught a ton of fish, which they offered to either descale or filet for us (and they did a wonderful, quick job of that). The highlight was the crew. Ilya and Matt were super accommodating from educating us and giving us tips on how to catch and reel the fish in, to placing bait on our hooks and unhooking each fish that my family of five caught (all while helping others as well). The captain even danced with my daughter (5 yrs old with special needs) when she came inside the cabin and was starting to get tired of being out by the side fishing. These men were such hard-working, honest gentlemen- it sealed the deal for us to plan our next trip with Osprey and every fishing charter in the future will be with them! (I'll add that our boat was not packed in without room to move like other charters, and we had many other people on our charter that were long-time fisherman that have chosen Osprey for years. That says a lot). If you're looking for a fishing charter in this area and you're either first-timers or have fishing experience- look no further. You won't be disappointed. *I'm not one to put personal photos of my family, but the crew even helped take photos of my kids' first catches and sent them to me privately. Seeking to ease her into a passion for paddling , I sought out a group experience on calm waters. Safe was the operative word. I saw a social media posting for a guided tour of the Connetquot charging a small fee for dropping in your own vessel. They run this tour weekend days. Until November. There was a group of about 17, some with their own kayaks or SUPs, others rented from the business. Rob provided great direction, was informative , and a genial host. Lisa and I probably had time during the 2 hours to have small conversations with everyone in the group. The canals and river were so easy to navigate, scenic, tranquil, even with some light powerboat traffic. Not an abundance of wildlife but we had a great close encounter with a great blue heron. We are probably comfortable doing this without guidance now, but might choose to join up again for the group experience! Check it out while the weather is fine and the waters are warm! P.S. - I fell out of the boat before we even launched. Looked the fool in front of all but that just started the day off with laughter.

After we left the dock The captain went over safety instructions as well as an itinerary for the trip. On this particular trip we were going for Blackfish, as the time of year offered. The "Sashimi" proved to be up to the task, as it is a well maintained and clean vessel with a toilet (head) on board. Within 40 minutes of leaving Northport Harbor, we were off the coast of Connecticut and on the fish. Captain Stu gave a brief tutorial with explanation of what kind of fish we were fishing for, the type of bait used and good technique for this type of fishing. This was helpful, as there were some novice fisherman on board who appreciated the instruction and one on one tutoring. The bait was prepped and ready to roll and both the mate and Captain Stu himself were attentive to helping bait hooks and unhook fish. Once we were "on the fish", Captain Stu would give tips and tricks of the trade to help enhance the fishing experience. On the way back to Long Island, the catch was cleaned and bagged , ready for some seasoning and eventually the grill, the fryer,or the oven. Overall, I would recommend a charter with Captain Stu and the "Sashimi" From beginning to end, he and his "crew" were courteous and well prepared and conducted themselves and the vessel in a professional manner. This is a great alternative if you want to get out and fish but don't want the big charter boat (we had 8 people).The bottom line might be a little more than the big charters, but the personalized fishing experience is worth the extra cost.
