Enjoyed the beer cheese and pretzels, though it's not something that I'd order regularly. Side salads fine, nothing memorable, but at least they were fresh and crispy. Liked the wings, I got hot, the wife got sweet thai chili. When ordering, she said she'd give me one or two of hers, but she liked them so much that she finished off the plate, so that's a rave review! My hot wings were reasonably spicy and meaty as well. Stopped by Troll Pub in Louisville and can confidently say this place wins points for atmosphere alone. The decor is quite unique, full of character, and the history adds to the experience. It feels like you're eating in a place that actually has stories to tell rather than another cookie-cutter restaurant. The food was good overall. The wings were excellent and definitely the highlight of the meal. I tried the lime sauce, which was good, though it tasted much more like a ranch-based sauce than I expected. My burger was cooked well, flavorful, and delicious... though I was disappointed to not see the caramelizes onions promised on the menu on it. Instead there was a sad looking single piece of raw onion. Oh well. The sandwich on rye was just okay--not bad, but it didn't stand out. Fries were good and perfectly seasoned. Service was friendly and attentive, although things moved a little slower than expected during our visit. Now for the bathroom area... let's just say the journey to get there felt like the opening scene of a horror movie where someone says, "I'll be right back." It definitely adds to the pub's quirky charm, but I do wish that area--and the restaurant in general--were a bit cleaner. Friendly host, meh server. Great beer list and interesting cocktails. Multiple seating areas plus outdoor patio. Busy but not slammed at Friday lunch time. Large menu so something for everyone. But like so many large menus, nothing we had was more than serviceable. And neither the chili nor the French dip jus were more than lukewarm. All the salt in the world was in the frickles (which had a great breading and texture). Perfect with the beers we (Black Raspberry Sour and Bourbon Barrel aged strong ale) had but honestly, too much salt! Atmosphere and decor are fun. Easily holds groups of 6. Quirky place us how I would describe this place. I wanted to see what the fuss was about plus I like places that aren't run of the mill chains. Check the website and sign up prior to your visit- you get a free appetizer voucher emailed to you. Parking is on the street . We had the poutine fries called "Stacked, Packed Pot Roast Poutine Fries" and shared the The Kentucky Hot Brown. We liked the app but the entree was too soggy and was not as good. We wished we had ordered something else. But it wasn't bad. The place is in the basement so it was a bit dark inside. Felt like a pub atmosphere but it was pretty quiet inside. They do allow kids, it's family friendly. Even tho when you first come in you think it's a bar. It was ok but probably wouldn't come back if we were back in town. read more

The beer cheese burger is a multi-napkin experience. Short of eating the burger with a fork & knife (sacrilegious, I know), it's gonna be a messy meal. The Reuben is getting close to perfection. Just a little less "butter" on the bread and the sandwich wouldn't be so greasy. But the pastrami was superb. And the sandwich had some "heft" to it. My chicken sub sandwich was packed with a grilled chicken breast, lettuce, tomato & mayo. It would have been excellent if the chicken breast was thoroughly cooked. It was thawed, but still cold in the center. All burgers & sandwiches come with hot and crisp fries or chips, if you prefer. And they do a great job with sweet potatoes fries. Service was excellent. Visited this spot recently while passing through Louisville, and was not disappointed! I was searching online for any restaurant that serves Kentucky's famous "Hot-Brown" plate. This place was one of the first recommended online, also plus: if you go on their website and subscribe to their e-list, you get a free appetizer included! I arrived at "Troll Pub" (love the name) and walked downstairs. The ambiance is dark, but welcoming. I was taken to the bar-area, and the barista was extremely nice and helpful in choosing my appetizer (fried pickles) and of course, getting my taste of my first Hot-Brown. The pickles were absolutely delicious. Fresh, crisp, with a bit of sour. Absolute 5/5. Now on to the Hot Brown ---- this is hot open-faced sandwich --- let me stop, here's the accurate description: thick-sliced turkey and bacon on toast, smothered in a creamy Mornay (cheese) sauce, and baked until bubbly. What I liked about their particular hot-brown (like i could compare...), was that the bread was torn into pieces, so it was very easy to eat. I get it now , Louisville! Ok my wife found this on Yelp and it's kinda hard to find. We missed it first try and had to circle back. The street feels like an alley. And it doesn't help that when you go into the establishment, it's downstairs- in a basement. So it's darker in here than most places you will eat at. They have a $5 cocktail of the day- and it's a surprise- so you won't know what it is until they serve it to you. My wife was intrigued so she got one. She said it was ok. It was like a Long Island Ice Tea that evening. If you go online and sign up - you can get an appetizer for free. My wife had did that earlier and gotten the email so we got that and we share an entrée since we weren't that hungry. She looked it up and wanted to try the local favorite called The Kentucky Hot Brown. The app we shared was Stacked, Packed Pot Roast Poutine Fries. The appetizer fries were the winner during this meal. Our son didn't care for the entree so much. It was ok but the bread gets so soggy and all mushed together in the end. Plus it's not too appealing when it arrives. It's an open faced turkey sandwich with a cheese sauce. In the end we all agreed the fry appetizer was the better of the two this evening. read more

We were greeted by a friendly troll giving directions as we walked under the bridge. That was when the magic began. It was a warm autumn night walking the streets of Louisville. A trip down the stairs and negotiating a medieval door with an iron knocker, and we were in troll heaven. This is a wonderful greasy spoon diner with whiskey flights. That's right whiskey flights! :) and good beer or cheap beer if you prefer. We started with a big boy breakfast and some beer cheese pretzel sticks, my non-drinking wife said yes to this place because of the delicious looking beer cheese pretzels, her kryptonite. We proceeded to order a nice rye, a Southern Comfort Burger and a Buffalo Chicken Wrap. Top five burger, in the same breathe as a good Hilton Head burger. The kettle chips were not too dry and were fried just right. I would rank this place four to five stars, if I was in a closer hotel and didn't have to walk seven blocks I would have explored the flight options. Louisville is a wonderful small city. read more

The place is big and I have no idea how many tables there are, but our service was good and pretty quick. The menu is pretty much pub food - fish and chips, burgers, sandwiches, etc. There were a number of things that sounded good! We both liked our meals! As far as ambiance - not much! Now this is my kind of place. It's downstairs under a bridge in a stone cellar. It was nice and cool down there. We sat in the bar. The bartender was really good and made our drinks perfectly. Most of the time burgers are burgers but OMG the beer cheese burger was one of the best burgers I've ever had. My husband got hot wings and they were also great. We recently ate at the Troll Pub before a concert. We were asked if we wanted bar seating or dining and we chose dining, thinking it would be a little quieter. We were wrong!! There was a group of 8-10 older teens, a few of drinking age, who were beyond loud. I understand they were having a good time but in a small, enclosed area it's very loud!! Despite the noisy environment our food was good and service was decent for only one person taking care of our whole area. She did great and thanked us for our patience. We came to Troll Pub Under the Bridge after a busy day of tours and lots of walking. We need good, hearty food, and that's just what we got. We started with wings, beer cheese and pretzels, and loaded fries. All were delicious, served super hot and fresh. Our entrees included the Angry Alfredo, patty melt, and beer cheese burger. Again, all served hot and fresh. The Alfredo had a delightful heat (spice) to it. The beer cheese burger was served on a pretzel bun, and it was cooked perfectly. The patty melt was also really delicious. The fries were wonderfully crisp. Troll Pub is definitely on our "return" list for our next trip to Louisville. read more

The Troll Pub is a unique experience. This basement pub in downtown Louisville is (as the name states) under a bridge AND in the basement of a very historical building. The menu features a lot of pub favorites and the portions are very generous. I enjoyed a "Tender Dinner" which is truly a dinner portion of chicken tenders and fries. The beer selection is excellent, with a nice variety of locally brewed styles. Service was friendly and attentive. The space is cozy so I wouldn't recommend for larger groups. Cozy, however, is a big part of Troll Pub's charm and I highly recommend. read more

Tried this place the other day with the rest of the bachelor party for my soon to be brother in law and the food, drinks and service were just okay. The best part of this place was the story I heard about them digging feet of dirt out of the space to open the restaurant and it ended up becoming one of the most well known artist spaces in downtown Louisville. The food was delicious, the place was pretty cool inside ! There was a bar around back we don't notice until after we got up to leave and looked for bathrooms. The service was not the best. The server who went by "night hawk" was the only server working the entire place. I noticed the manager and the host simply walked around but did not aid the server at all and he was clearly in the weeds. The server had a terrible attitude, when we asked about ordering a drink that was on the menu he simply shook his head no and when we ordered food instead of acknowledging us he just wrote it down in his book so we weren't clear if he even heard what we were saying. I think maybe if he had help he wouldn't have made our experience so bad. Maybe he just doesn't have a personality I don't know but i think the way it was managed that day was terrible considering how busy it was. read more

This restaurant was recommended by the staff at the hotel we stayed at and omg was this some good bar food! My husband and I stopped in to grab some food in between our bourbon tours that were scheduled, so the team there was able to get us seated immediately and take our orders so we had enough time to eat and run. The vibe of this place is just what the name states. You even go downstairs to enter the restaurant which is not something you see everywhere! I opted for the Cowboy Burger as I am a sucker for the pepper jack cheese and onion combo. My burger came out cooked to my preference and tasted absolutely amazing! We stopped by Troll Pub while doing a staycation downtown. It's a restaurant I've always wanted to try! Our family enjoyed it. It's located off Main Street, very close to the YUM Center on 2nd Street. You enter by going down a set of stairs to the underground restaurant. I think there is an elevator available. We were immediately greeted by a server and taken to a nearby table in the front room. There are several small dining areas throughout the restaurant and a bar in the back. There's a large sign with specials and our server also shared them with us. The restaurant was busy for a Sunday night and there were only two servers but they did an excellent job managing the busy rush. We ordered our drinks and also put in an order for 20 garlic parmesan wings. The menu said market price so I knew it would be pricey - they ended up being $20.99 for 12, but they were excellent. Nice and crispy with a sauce drizzled over them. My family loved them! For our entrees, we ordered the kids' alfredo, kids tenders with fries, club Sandwich, and French dip Sandwich with fries. Since the restaurant was busy, the food took a little longer than usual but it wasn't a bad wait. The food arrived hot and was very good. Portions were not huge but the food tasted good. The fries were fried to a nice golden color and were very crispy. My club was a normal club, nothing fancy but done well. The dip au jus had a great flavor and my husband kept dipping extra fries, my sandwich, etc in it. The kids' alfredo was not spicy and on the creamier side, didn't taste much cheese but she enjoyed it. Overall a very good meal - the total for four was $75. Center, with 14 in our group - which we have done many times. However, for the first time in the 15 years we've been coming here, we thought the food was subpar. I realize there was a large event taking place and they were busy, but the fried pickles were undercooked to where the breading fell off and what was left was powdery cornmeal. The fries were also underdone.
