Nice divey experience, felt uniquely Louisville, which was a good start to a weekend there. Good sized place, appropriately grungy/sticky. Decided we'd do a dinner of beer cheese, salad and wings. Enjoyed the beer cheese and pretzels, though it's not something that I'd order regularly. Side salads fine, nothing memorable, but at least they were fresh and crispy. Liked the wings, I got hot, the wife got sweet thai chili. When ordering, she said she'd give me one or two of hers, but she liked them so much that she finished off the plate, so that's a rave review! My hot wings were reasonably spicy and meaty as well. Appreciated the wipes! It's not going to win a Michelin star, but if we were in the area, we'd visit the troll again. read more

Visited this spot recently while passing through Louisville, and was not disappointed! I was searching online for any restaurant that serves Kentucky's famous "Hot-Brown" plate. This place was one of the first recommended online, also plus: if you go on their website and subscribe to their e-list, you get a free appetizer included! I arrived at "Troll Pub" (love the name) and walked downstairs. The ambiance is dark, but welcoming. I was taken to the bar-area, and the barista was extremely nice and helpful in choosing my appetizer (fried pickles) and of course, getting my taste of my first Hot-Brown. The pickles were absolutely delicious. Fresh, crisp, with a bit of sour. Absolute 5/5. Now on to the Hot Brown ---- this is hot open-faced sandwich --- let me stop, here's the accurate description: thick-sliced turkey and bacon on toast, smothered in a creamy Mornay (cheese) sauce, and baked until bubbly. The food was delicious, the place was pretty cool inside ! There was a bar around back we don't notice until after we got up to leave and looked for bathrooms. The service was not the best. The server who went by "night hawk" was the only server working the entire place. I noticed the manager and the host simply walked around but did not aid the server at all and he was clearly in the weeds. The server had a terrible attitude, when we asked about ordering a drink that was on the menu he simply shook his head no and when we ordered food instead of acknowledging us he just wrote it down in his book so we weren't clear if he even heard what we were saying. I think maybe if he had help he wouldn't have made our experience so bad. Maybe he just doesn't have a personality I don't know but i think the way it was managed that day was terrible considering how busy it was. read more

Another solid meal from Troll Pub! With out-of-town family visiting, Troll is a uniquely Louisville experience. And clearly, Troll has stepped up their game. The beer cheese burger is a multi-napkin experience. Short of eating the burger with a fork & knife (sacrilegious, I know), it's gonna be a messy meal. The Reuben is getting close to perfection. Just a little less "butter" on the bread and the sandwich wouldn't be so greasy. But the pastrami was superb. And the sandwich had some "heft" to it. My chicken sub sandwich was packed with a grilled chicken breast, lettuce, tomato & mayo. It would have been excellent if the chicken breast was thoroughly cooked. It was thawed, but still cold in the center. All burgers & sandwiches come with hot and crisp fries or chips, if you prefer. And they do a great job with sweet potatoes fries. Service was excellent. We recently ate at the Troll Pub before a concert. We were asked if we wanted bar seating or dining and we chose dining, thinking it would be a little quieter. We were wrong!! There was a group of 8-10 older teens, a few of drinking age, who were beyond loud. I understand they were having a good time but in a small, enclosed area it's very loud!! Despite the noisy environment our food was good and service was decent for only one person taking care of our whole area. She did great and thanked us for our patience. I think next time I'll just stick with the bar area! read more

Interesting location & atmosphere. Loved the huge troll! Must go down steps to enter restaurant so might not be a good choice if walking was a challenge. Ordered to go & efficient service. It is close to the convention center so it probably gets very busy during the week. Ordered Fleur dip with fires & Grilled chicken sandwich with side salad. Both meals were fine & traveled well. This was an extremely cool pub! Follow the Troll Pub signs from the main street and you won't miss the huge troll statue. The pub was a lot bigger than you expect and the menu is extensive. The hot wings, beer and cheese bread dip, and chicken tenders were all great options and you can share them with a group. read more

This restaurant is near our hotel and we had to check it out! We went on Saturday night and it was pretty busy. We had a reservation and were seated right away. The place is big and I have no idea how many tables there are, but our service was good and pretty quick. The menu is pretty much pub food - fish and chips, burgers, sandwiches, etc. There were a number of things that sounded good! We both liked our meals! As far as ambiance - not much! It's under street level so there's no natural light. It got loud before we left because of a large table seated near us, but other than that it wasn't super loud. I'd go back! read more

The Troll Pub is a unique experience. This basement pub in downtown Louisville is (as the name states) under a bridge AND in the basement of a very historical building. The menu features a lot of pub favorites and the portions are very generous. I enjoyed a "Tender Dinner" which is truly a dinner portion of chicken tenders and fries. The beer selection is excellent, with a nice variety of locally brewed styles. Service was friendly and attentive. The space is cozy so I wouldn't recommend for larger groups. Cozy, however, is a big part of Troll Pub's charm and I highly recommend. read more

Tried this place the other day with the rest of the bachelor party for my soon to be brother in law and the food, drinks and service were just okay. The best part of this place was the story I heard about them digging feet of dirt out of the space to open the restaurant and it ended up becoming one of the most well known artist spaces in downtown Louisville. This restaurant was recommended by the staff at the hotel we stayed at and omg was this some good bar food! My husband and I stopped in to grab some food in between our bourbon tours that were scheduled, so the team there was able to get us seated immediately and take our orders so we had enough time to eat and run. The vibe of this place is just what the name states. You even go downstairs to enter the restaurant which is not something you see everywhere! I opted for the Cowboy Burger as I am a sucker for the pepper jack cheese and onion combo. My burger came out cooked to my preference and tasted absolutely amazing! Before I knew it the whole thing was gone lol! Our server was also nice enough to cash us out before we started eating so we could head out as soon as we were done and make our next tour on time! We stopped by Troll Pub while doing a staycation downtown. It's a restaurant I've always wanted to try! Our family enjoyed it. It's located off Main Street, very close to the YUM Center on 2nd Street. You enter by going down a set of stairs to the underground restaurant. I think there is an elevator available. We were immediately greeted by a server and taken to a nearby table in the front room. There are several small dining areas throughout the restaurant and a bar in the back. There's a large sign with specials and our server also shared them with us. The restaurant was busy for a Sunday night and there were only two servers but they did an excellent job managing the busy rush. We ordered our drinks and also put in an order for 20 garlic parmesan wings. The menu said market price so I knew it would be pricey - they ended up being $20.99 for 12, but they were excellent. Nice and crispy with a sauce drizzled over them. My family loved them! For our entrees, we ordered the kids' alfredo, kids tenders with fries, club Sandwich, and French dip Sandwich with fries. Since the restaurant was busy, the food took a little longer than usual but it wasn't a bad wait. The food arrived hot and was very good. Portions were not huge but the food tasted good. The fries were fried to a nice golden color and were very crispy. My club was a normal club, nothing fancy but done well. The dip au jus had a great flavor and my husband kept dipping extra fries, my sandwich, etc in it. The kids' alfredo was not spicy and on the creamier side, didn't taste much cheese but she enjoyed it. Overall a very good meal - the total for four was $75. Such a cool and unique spot in downtown Louisville! The 'underground' vibe being literally under the bridge makes it feel like a hidden gem. The giant troll at the entrance is a fun touch for photos. The service here was good, outside of the server forgetting one of our drinks for nearly 20 minutes. We had the private room prior to the Nate Bargatze show at the YUM! Center, with 14 in our group - which we have done many times. However, for the first time in the 15 years we've been coming here, we thought the food was subpar. I realize there was a large event taking place and they were busy, but the fried pickles were undercooked to where the breading fell off and what was left was powdery cornmeal. The fries were also underdone. I hope this isn't a trend and it was simply a case of rushing to get orders out on the part of the kitchen, but I was a bit taken aback at the lack of execution on the food. read more

We tried this place for dinner recently and had a good experience. The big troll outside is pretty creepy, but fun to take a picture with. Taking the stairs down to the restaurant sets the tone for an under the bridge troll experience. The inside is a pretty cool, brick interior with dim lighting. Makes it seem like the place is hundreds of years old. The place is spacious and the bar area is massive. In true Louisville form, the bar has just about any bourbon you can hope for. We didn't sit in the bar area since we had our 3 year old with us, but we would definitely come back to try that for a future trip. The fried pickles ("frickles") were ok. They were pretty soggy and not as crisp as we usually like. The Angry Alfredo and the Kentucky Hot Brown entrees were great. My daughter enjoyed her grilled cheese. The pear cider and the troll old fashioned were tasty drink options. The service was a little slow, but we will definitely consider coming back. read more

Ok, the bartender here is apparently a magician, because he was single-handedly taking care of serving customers not just literally at the bar, but at all of the pub seating around the bar. We enjoyed local brews, frickles, and I loved the fish in my fish and chips! Huge portion, so crispy, flaky tender fish inside. Plus the ambiance of the bar was awesome! The best part of this place was the marketing. The place was really dirty and it didn't look like the floors had been swept all day. There was still a ton of food in the part of the dining room we were in all over the floor. I got the Kentucky Hot Brown since that's one of Louisville's signature dishes (pic part of review). They had a special with the burgers going on which my brother ordered and that's the way I'd recommend going to other new customers. The waitress spoke very highly of all the dishes and especially the beer cheese sauce. Unfortunately it came out cold and it was super thick & not very good. I'd say the 2 reasons I gave this place 3 stars is mainly due to the interesting decor, creative bourbon beverages & location downtown next to a lot of other things to do. However with so many other options for dinner I wouldn't go back to this restaurant mainly due to how dirty it was and the food quality was fair at best. read more

I have been wanting to try the Troll Pub for a long time. When my cousin and her husband came up for the big car show, I took advantage of their trip as an excuse to make reservations. We headed down and met up with my cousin and headed in. It was dark as expected. I loved the decor and the atmosphere. We ordered drinks and appetizers. We started out with loaded troll fries. They were tasty. I ordered a Philly Cheese Steak, My wife had the Caesar Salad with added chicken, my Cousin ordered the Reuben and her husband ordered the beer cheese burger. The service was great, the food just OK. Nothing wrong with it, but nothing stood out. The biggest problem I had was the noise. We were seated by large table who was very loud, to the point I could not hold a conversation with my cousin across the table. Once we finished our food, we paid and left. I had wanted o stay and enjoy a few more drinks with my cousin, but I also wanted to talk to her. It was a slow night, is they were sending staff home. Would I eat there again, sure. read more
