He praised the artwork, even called over another artist to admire it, and quoted me $800. I explained that I had hired a previous artist who had butchered my vision by swapping my original work with generic clip art, and I wanted someone who would honor what I had drawn. He seemed very excited to do the work, and said he loved my design. Steven assured me he would do it right. He promised to provide finished digital lineart two weeks before the appointment so I'd have time for revisions if needed. I booked two months in advance and paid a $100 deposit. Two weeks out--no lineart, so I messaged him to ask for it. One week out--he sent a tiny, half-assed sketch made of--you guessed it--more fn clip art! I waited. Another small fragment came in several days later. Sloppy, generic, and clearly nothing like my design. My original drawings, including two of my pets, were reduced to cookie-cutter garbage. I was losing sleep over the stress. I really wanted this piece to be done correctly. Still, I tried to trust him. His portfolio on Instagram was gorgeous, so I wanted to believe in him. The day before the appointment--still no full lineart. I asked to reschedule when he had time to do as he had promised: provide lineart I could approve of or request changes to before the appointment. He gaslit me and insisted that his other clients trusted him. I explained my concern and said I wasn't comfortable getting inked without seeing a complete draft, especially after my previous experience. Which he KNEW. He told me to come in anyway. He said I could at least try on a stencil. When I arrived, he was scrambling to slap something together on his iPad at the last moment. Not the whole thing, again, just one element of it. What he printed wasn't even close to my design. He took an elegant, feminine design and turned it into a back alley biker tattoo. It was thick, coarse, and ugly. When I politely told him this wasn't even close what I wanted, he said, "I'm not the artist for you," and then refused to refund my deposit. He immediately blocked me on Instagram and updated his bio to say deposits are non-refundable. Let's be clear: I didn't flake on the appointment--he did. He had two months to deliver on his promise. He lied, stalled, copied cheap clip art, and gaslit me to guilt me into coming in, wasting my time as I had to clear the entire day for nothing. He took my money, but did no real work. It felt like it might be his MO: take your deposit, string you along, ignore your design, and his own promises, and deliver garbage he knows you'll reject so he can pocket your money without lifting a finger. My husband said it seemed like a scam, and I agree. Steven Gonzalez is not a professional--he's a liar, and a thief. I now have serious doubts as to whether any of the art on his Instagram is even his. If he'll steal money, he'll steal credit too. Avoid this shop at all costs. Don't trust Steven with your time, your money, or your skin. Big mistake. Enjoy your $100 review, Steven!

I also recently came in for a walk-in piercing and had the pleasure of being helped by @piercedbykayla. I got a nostril and eyebrow piercing, and she made the entire process so easy. She did get off her chair to go through the motions of helping us but sat back down looking miserable. I did try to joke with her but she wasn't having it. We couldn't find what we were looking for and we were leaving and that's when she became helpful. Yeah, because we were leaving, not cool. So to the manager or supervisor, if you think I'm making this up? Look at the cameras inside the shop. Zoom in on her demeanor and her body language. Again I'm not one for giving one star reviews but as you know when you mess with a family member and you're there to witness it? There's no way you can let it go. I like the location in Claremont because of how friendly and helpful they are and I think this shop Needs that really bad. Laughing Buddha was definitely the right choice for me. You can tell that they take pride in being a well-maintained and hygienic practice. It's brightly lit, spacious, and clean inside and they take the time to explain how they extensively sterilize their equipment. The prices were very fair. I paid $150 for 3 ear piercings. Cartilage and lobe piercings are roughly the same price, about $30 not including jewelry. Picking out jewelry wasn't my favorite part. The costs are not displayed so if you're trying to stick to a budget you have to ask for prices repeatedly. I felt a little pressured to just say yes when one sounded cheaper. Prices also don't include the backings which were about $10. I learned afterwards that you actually need to buy multiple backings for getting the piercings resized as they heal. I would have liked to know that upfront. The procedures themselves went well. They're done in doctors office looking exam rooms. Unfortunately you have to go in yourself so if you're nervous that might be something to consider. It might be industry standard, I don't know, but I wasn't expecting to go in myself so it was a bit nerve wracking. They let in someone to observe so there's definitely room for a guest to come in. My piercer, Airick, was a really friendly and experienced guy. They do take walk ins but I really don't recommend it. They seem pretty booked so definitely make an appointment or at least call ahead and see what times are available that day. Even with an appointment, it took a little longer than I expected to be serviced.
