This was a nice find. The place is nicely decorated, has free parking, and serves outstanding Szechuan dishes. We started with their cold Szechuan noodles. Very tastey. Great texture. Plenty of delicious chili oil. Next we had their soup dumplings (xiao long bao). These weren't bad but they were not at the same level as their Szechuan dishes. So we returned to Szechuan province dishes for the rest of the meal: mapo tofu, ants in a tree, and salt and pepper fish. All three entrees were delicious. Of the three, we all agreed that ants on a tree was our favorite. Is it spicy? Absolutely! Is is a bit oily? Duh... it's Szechuan. Does it bring the Szechuan peppercorn forward? Absolutely! It's guaranteed to numb your tongue in that delightful way that only this type of pepper can accomplish. The mapo tofu has that delightful signature texture. And it's flavor profile is very similar to ants in a tree but it was a bit less spicy and had a bit less Szechuan pepper. It came with plenty of rice and was a great dish. The salt and pepper fish was topped nicely with a nice mixture of garlic, onions, and bell pepper, all finely diced. We just drank water but they offered beer, wine and sake. Mongolian Beef and Cucumber Salad were delicious! The pot stickers missed the mark. They were definitely the frozen kind. The service was great! Very friendly and attentive. We are on a quest to find the best szechuan food in Houston. The breading on this chicken was AMAZING. Not sure how their achieve it but it's easily the best spicy crispy chicken (can be called other things at other places but most szechuan places in Houston have an item similar. We stopped by for lunch and was very pleased with how clean and modern the interior was. We had a great experience overall and really like the food we ordered: Sliced beef and tendon in chili sauce, Eggplant in spicy sour sauce, three peppers taro chicken, and dry pot lamb. The portion sizes were really big and we got an entire pot of rice for free which we loved. I wish there was more chicken in the three peppers taro chicken, but the flavor was rich and the chicken was tender. Egg plant was pretty classic, but well done in texture and sauce, the sliced beef and tendon was spicy and chewy, but covered in peanuts for a crunchy texture. I've seen a few of these restaurants driving around Houston and never had the urge to go with the idea that it was just a franchise Chinese restaurant but I was SO wrong. So glad that they are spread out throughout the city so I don't have to drive far when I get the craving for Szechuan food. My Ranking in order: 1. Scallion Pancake - flakey, crispy, not chewy at all paired with a sweet and numbing spice sauce 2. Mongolian beef - although it's lacking in color and unappealing to the eye. The perfectly velveted and seasoned beef went so well with the meal 3. Pork with mustard green - not overly fatty at all, the mustard green helps cut down on the heaviness of this dish !Caution if you're not used to Chinese preserved vegetable taste! 4. This was previously the Pepper Twins location and this might be a rebrand? Plenty of parking in the front parking lot. Interior is clean and decently modern. The menu looks new and revamped with a better quality print. However, the positives taper off here; the food we ordered for lunch was subpar in terms of authenticity and taste. We got the dan dan noodle (3.5/5) and tripe (4/5) for appetizers; solid start. For mains, we shared (family style) the kung pao chicken (1/5), Mongolian beef (3/5), and shredded pork with sweet sour garlic sauce (3/5). The kung pao chicken was not good; the ingredients in it aren't authentic to the dish itself at all and the dish didn't taste like its namesake. I initially wasn't sure exactly what we got served but it was very sad once our server confirmed that it is kung pao chicken. The Mongolian beef was slightly tough and didn't taste like expected either. The dish doesn't taste or really look like Mongolian beef. The shredded pork was also a bit off in terms of flavor. We just had these same dishes in actual China and these dishes are so off of the OG flavor profile. For a more fair comparison, if you compare these dishes to other Chinese Sichuan spots in town, the same comment can still be made; the ingredients and flavor in the dishes we ordered were unfortunately underwhelming and bland (how?). read more

My friend and I decided to try something new. I look at the menu on the website but when we go there, they hand use a copy of the lunch menu that has more of the American Chinese food my friend prefer to eat. There as just one server working during lunch time and she seems new to the job because my friend ordered a Coke, and instead of gettin his drink first, she went to go clean a table just left. So I had to ask her in Chinese to get my friend his drink first. I ordered the house hot sake- which was fabulous for a house pour (about 6 small cups) and had a sweet lightly plum flavour. We ordered the rainbow dumplings with came with a sweet black vinegar and sesame sauce. The Mapo Tofu gets a 10/10- the tofu was so silky soft and the sauce was rich umami with a buzzing Szechuan sensation, but was not overly spicy. The spicy crispy chicken was also great, soft and tender on the outside with lots of dry fried peppers. It was spicy and also numbing. My husband ordered beef noodles that were savory in a brown sauce. We will definitely be coming back. As for the food, I always order the same dishes when I go to a Sichuan place, but also couldn't order too many dishes since there were only 3 of us. For appetizers we ordered: -Sichuan Cold Jelly Noodles -Sliced Beef & Tendon in Chili Sauce Main dish: -Mapo Tofu -Water Boiled Fish The appetizer dishes were a bit smaller than I expected, but it wasn't unreasonable for the price. The sliced beef & tendon appetizer was also very flavorful (definitely needed rice with it) and delicious, but the cold jelly noodles lacked a bit in flavor. I prefer mine to have more acidity from vinegar, but I don't think they used vinegar in this dish. The water boiled fish was my favorite 100/10, it definitely had the numbing spice, and very big slices of fish filet that were super soft and tender. I liked that it was more saucy rather than oily too! The mapo tofu was also good, I think the fish definitely numbed my tongue by the time I got to the tofu, but I think it lacked slightly in aroma -- maybe because we opted out of the additional ground pork. It's a nice and very spacious venue. I came around 8pm after my flight on a weekday and it was pretty empty but people started to trickle in after. I ordered the Ma Po tofu, salt and pepper fish, and soy based pork belly wraps. They were all super tasty!! The portions were generous for the price as well. This triple pepper location is my absolute favorite. They have one in Chinatown as well, but I was disappointed by that location. This riveroaks one did all their dishes amazingly. Here's what I got and what I recommend: 1. Spicy cripsy chicken - A true comfort dish. Perfectly crispy on the outside and yet still juicy on the inside. It is bigger chunks of chicken than the other sichuan restaurants in Houston. Taste has a twinge of sweetness, a bit of spice, and is so delicious. A must get. 2. Eggplant in spicy sour garlic sauce - I don't normally order eggplants, but this is amazing. The sauce is sweet, tangy, spicy. Tender eggplant. My only gripe is the amount of oil. 3. Wontons in chili oil - I was blown away by this dish. It is different from most in that it is on the sweeter side, and I love the sweetness. It is quite oily though...but hey that's what you sign up for if you go to a sichuan restaurant. The wontons are stuffed with tender, juicy pork and has a spicy, sweet chili oil sauce. Note: I got everything without the numbing peppercorn because I don't like the numbing sensation, so if you still want the flavors and spice but without the numb try ordering it without the peppercorn! Overall, I will definitely come back. Service was quick and fast. I got the food out fast. The inside of the place is nicely decorated and has an authentic ambiance. We made a to go order and got the mapo tofu, boiled fish (sounds gross, but it's too die for), and eggplant to-go, and all of it was absolutely delicious, ready quickly, and packaged with care. They were a little pricey but the portions were generous and quality seems worth it. From the time we ordered online to pickup was about 15 minutes (quoted 20) and it was ready to go when we walked it. Not a big deal, but their online ordering system was a little odd. I thought I paid but it defaults to paying in store even though you can pre-add the tip, so if you're not paying attention you can easily tip twice when signing inside. It was already added to the bill in a different spot, but it still makes me squirm to sign something with zero on the tip line. That's a me problem, though We'll definitely be back! read more

Best Chinese food in Houston. In my opinion, Houston has limited choices for good Chinese food, and I I was pleasantly surprised by Triple Pepper in River Oaks. I probably would not have even thought to venture in the restaurant because it is located in a typical Houston strip center but I was looking for a new place to eat Chinese food in my neighborhood. Triple Pepper offers an extensive and creative menu in addition to table service and an open bar. We shared the steamed dumplings, the General Tsao's chicken and the Twice Cooked pork belly.
