Train mass transit is brilliant. Free train mass transit that drops you off at the event you are going to and takes you back to within a mile of your house is even more brilliant. Drinking on said mass transit is heaven. Trinity Railway Express is all of that. Sure, it technically isn't free, but we "forgot" to pay. And I don't think you're allowed to drink on it, but we "forgot" to leave our cup-o-beers in the parking lot. On a concert night at AAC it took 21 minutes to get from Victory Park/The AAC to DFW Airport/CentrePort. THAT IS A-MA-ZING! You could barely drive that fast and in a car you'd have to deal with traffic and paying for parking at AAC. Remind me why more people don't take the train to downtown Dallas and Fort Worth?! Seriously. I love it and I love saving tons of money on gas, parking and a DUI. (Shout out to my wife for taking me to and picking me up at the station... Two points for me for being socially responsible.) Dallas- Fort Worth, get with the picture .Ride the train to the Mavs/Stars/concerts/DFW Airport. Save some fossill fuels, save a couple bucks, have a cocktail while you enjoy the gentle rock of a diesel train.

Growing up as a kid, I had this train set. Sure it was only a couple of cars long (with a bright red caboose!), but you could plan and plot different routes with the rails and make different switches on the tracks. Loads of fun for a 5 year old and early indoctrination into a love affair with rail lines. And thus what kid doesn't grow up loving trains? So when I saw that the Dallas light rail line didn't connect with DFW but that there was a train connector, this was an easy choice. The TRE runs from downtown Fort Worth to Dallas on seemingly an hourly schedule with multiple stops along the way. The stations are fairly small with self-serve kiosks for tickets (although no one actually checked tickets) and there was a small vendor selling concessions at the station I was at. The rail line is relatively featureless, but the seats are comfy and they seem to move pretty quickly between stations. Coming from DFW, expect the ride to be about 30 minutes to downtown Union Station. A few quibbles: -There could be a little bit more convenient system for travellers at DFW to the connector. It's two separate bus rides: one that drops you off at a parking lot (Parking South) and the second that takes you to the train. -No Sunday service. Sort of big drawback for the weekend traveller looking to get back to DFW for his/her return flight. -A few of the self serve kiosks were out of order (although there was a sign on one of them noting that it was scheduled for an upgrade). -The pricing system has regional zones and the bus from DFW drops you off at a station just outside the Dallas zone. Thus you'll pay extra to go to downtown Dallas (although for the Fort Worth traveller, this would be really cheap).

My experience with DART is primarily the new Silver Line. As a business traveler, I am at DFW…read moreseveral times a month. The Silver Line has been an incredibly convenient way for me to quickly get to the airport without the hassle of finding a parking spot or the associated expense. The train drops off at Terminal B. It's a quick 3 minute walk from the train station into the airport terminal, where you head up one level to check in, check any bags, and head into TSA security. That security checkpoint offers "TSA lite" where you get a pass to hand to TSA officers to keep items in bags and head through the normal metal detector. The downside of the train at DFW is if you have checked bags; if you come into any other terminal than terminal B, you'd have to exit the terminal, collect bags, then take the free shuttle bus service over to terminal B. At that point, lugging around checked bags, the convenience of the train is lost and it'd be much more worthwhile to take a rideshare. The Silver Line trains run on-time (sometimes a minute or two early, so... be early for the train) - just the ability to count on trains running per a published schedule is welcome change from many other cities I've lived in. The train is very clean, and I absolutely love the tables so I can pop open my laptop and squeeze in 40 minutes of work. I also like the ability to purchase & activate passes from my phone - fare officers checking for passes have been courteous and polite. In fact, every DART employee I've been near has greeted me, smiled, said hello, and asked how my trip was. It really feels they are working hard to make this a great experience for riders. A big downside is the schedule - every 15 minutes would be much more ideal. Having to wait an hour for the next train is brutal after a long travel day, but impossible if you're on your way to DFW and can't miss your flight. I really love taking the train so right now, when I arrive back at DFW, I get myself to Terminal B and hang out at Cantina Laredo (B29) until about 10 minutes prior to the train departure. Outside of the Silver Line, I've noticed that DART has made big improvements to the bus stations around where I live. They used to just be sad benches. Now many of the stations in my area are covered and semi-enclosed, protecting waiting riders from the heat, rain, and wind. I know I'm one of the few proponents of public transportation in the area where I live, but I do dream of being able to (easily) take the rail to sporting events, restaurants closer to the downtown area, or to big events like the State Fair. It would be wonderful to continue to expand on the Silver Line.

I thought it was very handicapped accessible. I saw lots of DART agents on the trains so I didn't have security concerns (it was middle of the day and rather crowded because it was State Fair season). The one issue I ran into was that I couldn't figure out how to get a physical ticket from the pay stations. I ended up downloading the app, verifying the app, adding a credit card to the app to pay and then buying a day pass (round trip fare). The app is actually really nice. You can map your route and it will show you what time the next train is arriving at your stop. Definitely set the app up ahead of time so you are ready to go!

The station is right in front of the main entrance to the park, so it's super convenient! There were plenty of DART workers when I went, directing hordes of pedestrian, and making sure everything was safe. The fact that there were lots of uniformed employees made things go smoothly, and they were good about telling people to get out of the way or clearing the tracks. The station was well lit, and it was a simple process to get tickets and get a place to sit on the train. The trains were packed when I went, but everything still moved quickly and smoothly. If you're heading here for the State Fair, this is certainly the way that I'd recommend getting here!

We looked forward to our mini vacation and even booked a First Class bedroom on the train. The previous month we had booked an amtrak roomette and enjoyed it so much we decided to do it again this month on a longer route with a bigger room. During that train ride, we had excellent service in first Class ! The attendants were awesome ! They were very friendly, attentive, and happy to see ya ! This recent journey, however, wasn't even on par. Sadly because we had expectations of an awesome experience again but it wasn't even close. I will say though, in everyone else's defense, it was really only 1 person that made the trip so miserable; Jan, the lead attendant in the First Class dining car. She was not happy. Not nice. Talked down to you if you accidentally did something wrong that went against her routine. Just not polite at all. Ever. She had a cutting , condescending demeanor toward not only the passengers but her fellow co worker working underneath her as well. Everything was done like roll call. Very routine and very strict very impersonal. No pleasure in her voice at all whether making announcements or talking to you directly. Not a good experience for us as far as dining goes. Our room attendant, on the other hand, was wonderful, and expressed care for her passengers. She was very attentive and a very sweet personality. In the end, this experience set us back a little bit with Amtrak. First Class rooms are too expensive to endure the treatment we received from her 3 times daily at mealtime. Something which should be pleasurable. I do not wish anyone the misfortune to get her as their dinning car attendant. I'm not sure if and when we will travel with Amtrak again.

When it was time to board the Texas Eagle, the Cafe Car Manager summoned the passengers traveling in the Sleeper Car and took our lunch orders, then I boarded the train. My roomette was very comfy cozy.  Shortly after the train departed from the Eddie Bernice Johnson Union Station, the Personal Room Attendant brought my lunch to my roomette which was the Beef Burgundy with a roll, butter and chips, and Vanilla Pudding. A salad was unavailable. Unfortunately, beverages with authority are not included with meals so I ordered a Gin & Tonic, for digestive purposes, after my delightful lunch. I was about to take a power nap when the Cafe Car Manager arrived to take my dinner order. I was quite refreshed after my power nap, enjoying the views when my Chicken Parmesan arrived with a salad, roll, butter and Vanilla Pudding. I paired everything with a nice chilled bottle of Chardonnay.  I thoroughly enjoyed my journey in the Sleeper Car and this will not be my last time traveling in the comfort of a roomette. The roomette does not have a private toilet but the car has toilets that are kept clean and tidy by the attendant. Also the car has a decent sized shower and towels are provided.
