This is our first train ride together and I'm hopeful for more, but it's not something you would want to do all the time. I admit that it was cool having our own cabin with beds that popped down to a bunk bed situation, but we were suprised that it was as small as it was. Make sure you are getting what you think you are getting. There's a difference between a room and a roomette. We thought we were getting a room but ended up in the ette version which was still cool, but tiny! Also! Bring your own food! This is a must as the train food is truly inedible. And this is coming from a person who hates to waste food, but it wasn't too difficult because what they served us was not actually food. I don't know what it was, but it could not be eaen and I tried. Anyway, overall it was a cool experience and id recommended this to anyone who has a bit more time to travel and wants to see the country from a different angle. It's nice not having to deal with driving, crowds, traffic, being squeezed into a seat thats too small, and general hubub, but there are other drawbacks to train travel, so it's not 100% amazing either. Still, it's a cool adventure and i think we should all try it at least once or twice in our lives. If we did, there might be more luxery options available if the demand was there... it was really affordable in relation to plane tickets and had an added element of romance as well.... You may love it.

We used to live on the east coast where Acela to NYC is the norm for business and pleasure. I was excited to try going from Fort Worth to Austin on the train because 35 is a nightmare at all hours due to traffic and construction. The station in Fort Worth is shared with Greyhound. The signage is terrible. Our train was delayed but there was no way to read the sign and know what to do. The staff says "wait for an announcement" which was less helpful as we would have liked to walk around the area and play Pokémon Go if we had known how much time we had. At least I there is a decent Subway attached to get snacks. I also signed up for text alerts which is as great. The train itself nice. Big huge seats. I wish I'd packed a light blanket as our car was freezing. The kids went up to the observation car and bought cards. They loved it. The cafe car is crazy basic so pack food. If I had it to do over again, I'd get on if the private rooms. The price difference is significant - maybe $100 a person instead of $30 RT. What I didn't realize is that it comes with meals in the dining car. And it's a sit down with reservations in that you're assigned a time to meals. The menu is pretty good and would have been better than eating crap from the cafe. Plus it's so adorably civilized to eat at a restaurant on the train. My biggest gripe is there is no wifi on the train. All over the east coast has it but apparently Texas doesn't. I asked

First time traveler!!! I was pleased with my trip to Illinois from Dallas. Staff: 5 Comfort Level: 3 Food: 1 View: 3 Disclosure....Don't sit by the automatic doors. Yes, you'll have more leg room but you'll never get any quality rest. I sat upstairs and the stairway is so narrow, that I promise I was going to get stuck. The store kitchen price's are HIGHWAY ROBBERY. Glad I brought my own snacks, beverages and sandwiches. A cup of roman $2.75 A Hebrew National hotdogs $5.00 A bottle of beer $5.00 Orange juice $2.95 However I did enjoy the fact I didn't have to drive home for the holiday's. I'd use Amtrak again with better planning on my part.

The dining car served dinner like steak, fish, chicken and pasta and it was pretty good.
