Train mass transit is brilliant. Free train mass transit that drops you off at the event you are going to and takes you back to within a mile of your house is even more brilliant. Drinking on said mass transit is heaven. Trinity Railway Express is all of that. Sure, it technically isn't free, but we "forgot" to pay. And I don't think you're allowed to drink on it, but we "forgot" to leave our cup-o-beers in the parking lot. On a concert night at AAC it took 21 minutes to get from Victory Park/The AAC to DFW Airport/CentrePort. THAT IS A-MA-ZING! You could barely drive that fast and in a car you'd have to deal with traffic and paying for parking at AAC. Remind me why more people don't take the train to downtown Dallas and Fort Worth?! Seriously. I love it and I love saving tons of money on gas, parking and a DUI. (Shout out to my wife for taking me to and picking me up at the station... Two points for me for being socially responsible.) Dallas- Fort Worth, get with the picture .Ride the train to the Mavs/Stars/concerts/DFW Airport. Save some fossill fuels, save a couple bucks, have a cocktail while you enjoy the gentle rock of a diesel train.

Growing up as a kid, I had this train set. Sure it was only a couple of cars long (with a bright red caboose!), but you could plan and plot different routes with the rails and make different switches on the tracks. Loads of fun for a 5 year old and early indoctrination into a love affair with rail lines. And thus what kid doesn't grow up loving trains? So when I saw that the Dallas light rail line didn't connect with DFW but that there was a train connector, this was an easy choice. The TRE runs from downtown Fort Worth to Dallas on seemingly an hourly schedule with multiple stops along the way. The stations are fairly small with self-serve kiosks for tickets (although no one actually checked tickets) and there was a small vendor selling concessions at the station I was at. The rail line is relatively featureless, but the seats are comfy and they seem to move pretty quickly between stations. Coming from DFW, expect the ride to be about 30 minutes to downtown Union Station. A few quibbles: -There could be a little bit more convenient system for travellers at DFW to the connector. It's two separate bus rides: one that drops you off at a parking lot (Parking South) and the second that takes you to the train. -No Sunday service. Sort of big drawback for the weekend traveller looking to get back to DFW for his/her return flight. -A few of the self serve kiosks were out of order (although there was a sign on one of them noting that it was scheduled for an upgrade). -The pricing system has regional zones and the bus from DFW drops you off at a station just outside the Dallas zone. Thus you'll pay extra to go to downtown Dallas (although for the Fort Worth traveller, this would be really cheap).

The system seemed easy to navigate and relatively user friendly. Especially for someone so accustomed to very little efficient public transportation. I wish I got more use out of my pass, but when my man has his vehicle, he'd rather drive. So we drove.

This is my first time visiting, and do note that you have to Street Park if you're not taking public transportation. However, during midday on a weekday, it was easy, and I paid $.60 for 12 minutes, which was long enough to grab what I was aiming for. There's about 2 to 3 attendants working behind the screen to help you out, and then you wait in a queue to come up to them. I told them what I was there for, ended up buying three of the different varieties of cards, and four of the postcard designs. The cards are $10 each but come with a day pass, and the postcard is an additional $2 each! I don't know if I'll have a need to go back in the future, but I definitely think it's a worthwhile stop if you're in the area, and if you're looking for a fun (and useful!) FIFA souvenir.

I have taken Amtrak several times between Austin and Dallas but last week I was tired of airports…read moreand airplanes and being amongst the great unwashed so on this journey from Dallas to Austin, I upgraded to a roomette and I was not disappointed. When it was time to board the Texas Eagle, the Cafe Car Manager summoned the passengers traveling in the Sleeper Car and took our lunch orders, then I boarded the train. My roomette was very comfy cozy.  Shortly after the train departed from the Eddie Bernice Johnson Union Station, the Personal Room Attendant brought my lunch to my roomette which was the Beef Burgundy with a roll, butter and chips, and Vanilla Pudding. A salad was unavailable. Unfortunately, beverages with authority are not included with meals so I ordered a Gin & Tonic, for digestive purposes, after my delightful lunch. I was about to take a power nap when the Cafe Car Manager arrived to take my dinner order. I was quite refreshed after my power nap, enjoying the views when my Chicken Parmesan arrived with a salad, roll, butter and Vanilla Pudding. I paired everything with a nice chilled bottle of Chardonnay.  I thoroughly enjoyed my journey in the Sleeper Car and this will not be my last time traveling in the comfort of a roomette. The roomette does not have a private toilet but the car has toilets that are kept clean and tidy by the attendant. Also the car has a decent sized shower and towels are provided.

Amtrak: where the schedule is imaginary, the bathrooms are terrifying, and cleaning supplies…read moreapparently qualify as luxury upgrades. This trip was so bad it almost became impressive. The train was filthy. Not "busy travel day" dirty -- genuinely disgusting. The bathrooms looked like they had been sealed after a public-health investigation and quietly reopened without telling anyone. I walked into one and thought, "Well, this is how staph wins." Amtrak, I have a revolutionary suggestion: Buy a mop. Then use it. The rest of the train felt just as grimy and neglected. You quickly develop survival rules: Don't touch the tray table. Don't touch the wall. Definitely don't touch the bathroom door. Honestly, just levitate. Then there was the staff. Several were unfriendly, dismissive, and at times outright rude. Nothing improves a two-and-a-half-hour delay quite like being treated as though you personally broke the train. And yes -- TWO AND A HALF HOURS LATE. Apparently Amtrak considers arrival times creative writing. We also had repeated train problems throughout the trip: Move. Stop. Problem. Wait. Move again. Another problem. Repeat until morale disappears. Eventually you stop asking when you'll arrive and start bonding with the other passengers like survivors. "How long have you been aboard?" "I don't remember." "Stay strong." What happened to Amtrak? Train travel should be relaxing and scenic. Instead, I spent the trip calculating which surfaces were least likely to require antibiotics. A few free suggestions for management: Clean the bathrooms. Clean the train. Maintain the train. Fix the train. And remind the staff that passengers are customers, not unwanted houseguests. The best part of the trip was getting off the train. Fresh air felt luxurious. A clean bathroom felt like the Four Seasons. Would I ride Amtrak again? Absolutely -- right after planes stop flying, rental cars disappear, buses are outlawed, bicycles are banned, and walking becomes illegal. One star for eventually getting me there. Amtrak's new slogan should be: "Amtrak: We'll get you there eventually. Please don't touch anything."
