Jamie W. and I had a long, fulfilling day in San Sebastián as we strolled on the waterfront promenade along Concha Beach, explored the narrow lanes and shops of the Old Town (Parte Zaharra), climbed up and down Monte Urgull for the spectacular views, further explored the newer Gros district, made brief stops for tortilla de patata at Bar Zabaleta and kafe kon leche at Koh Tao, slid into a late afternoon pinxto crawl back in the Old Town, and finally took an early evening stroll back to the hotel. We were lying on the bed wondering if room service was an option when perusing the Yelp app, I found this neighborhood tavern just a five-minute walk from the hotel. It turned out to be a modest spot, quite popular with the locals as they gathered out in front and around the bar counter (photo: http://bit.ly/2j0W8lR).
The back dining room, by comparison, was an oasis of relative calm, so we sat ourselves down at an open table near the back. Even though the servers were busy, they never ignored us. We shared a quintet of small plates that suited us just fine. First up was the 6€ Mixed Salad with tuna, Spanish olives, hearts of palm, tomatoes, and a hard-boiled egg (photo: http://bit.ly/2iu9VgZ). Nothing that special but filling nonetheless. Next was the 8.50€ Salad of Fresh Tomatoes which was definitely not false advertising as it was festooned with Spanish olives, pepperoncini, and onions (photo: http://bit.ly/2AUniC5). The heartier dishes came next. We ordered a couple of the 2.20€ Prawn Skewers with Octopus which were covered excessively with paprika and balsamic vinegar (photo: http://bit.ly/2AxVZN3). The sweet and savory angles weren't meshing that well.
Our major indulgence then arrived, the 3€ Foie Gras (Grilled Goose Liver), which had the requisite meltiness over a wedge of crusty baguette but was again drenched with balsamic vinegar and compounded with an overly sweet applesauce (photo: http://bit.ly/2BOQcB6). We tried to offset that calorific bite with the 5.50€ Eggplant, Onion, Zucchini, Tomato & Carrot combination which came on top of toasted country bread. It was really an open-faced roasted vegetable sandwich topped with marinated red peppers (photo: http://bit.ly/2k43sJQ). This was the most satisfying part of our meal. As if that didn't represent enough carbs, there was a constant basket of sliced bread which Jamie proudly stared at without partaking since our dishes came with bread (photo: http://bit.ly/2zW4deX). With our unofficial pub crawl now ended, we were ready for a good night's sleep as we checked San Sebastián off our bucket list.
