Located in the Gros district,  Bergara is a 2018 Michelin rated restaurant serving up good food and drinks. We stop in at least a few times each trip and always satisfied with the service and food.   There is indoor and outdoor seating. 10% extra for terrace service (outdoor). Indoor there are seats at the bar, a couple tables in the corner for two, and bigger tables that can be shared with other parties.  We go there for the foie gras and the risotto but have tried about everything on the pintxos hot menu. There are ready made pintxos at the bar as well, just point. Worthy of a stop on your pintxos crawl. Affordable food and friendly service.

Not crowded, Five big tables. Outdoor seating. Several framed awards on the wall. I tried the mini burger, txopito, and scallop. All hot. Noticeably smaller than similar items elsewhere. Burger looked better it tasted, seafood was pretty good, though short of the more ambitious spots on the other side of the river. Very pricey as pintxos go. 12.5 for three small items and a soda. I walked by the high end, elegant restaurant at Kursaal and saw their prices were the same, so the rating dropped a star. See menu

Came for the txalupa but it was just okay. At our server's recommendation, we also tried the itxaso, which was so delicious that it nearly blew my g-string off! Hands down, one of the best things I've ever eaten and will dream about for the rest of my life. Imagine a bite size tart shell filled with monkfish and shrimp purée topped with a sprinkle of crispy leeks. Are you dripping with desire yet?

Egg with cheese, anchovy, & shrimp. The other is jamon, peppers, anchovy and onions. Welcome to flavor town

Right in the middle of the Gros neighborhood, this place has an extensive menu and a limited number of pintxos on display. If you know what you like, you will find it well-prepared here. This one is hyped by lots of writers in Europe. Their prices reflect it. You won't find many locals here, but you will find tourists. Tried a few of the award winning examples and found them interesting but not life altering. I still prefer the bars in Casco Viejo over the ones in Gros. Gros is more for the local hipsters because many of the places offer 1 euro house pintxos and 1 euro drinks on Thursday night between 7 and 11 to stimulate business. It is called Pintxo-Pote night. The cheap places are mobbed by the locals.

Order their hot pintxos, esp the Itxaso. U won't regret it.

Pintxos glore!! Bergara' clean modern decor is a good match to the hip vibe of the Gros neighborhood and know for award winning pintxos. We stopped in for quick pre dinner snack and drink and it was like stepping into food nirvana. Had to exert extreme self control otherwise I would likely gorge myself to oblivion. In addition to the glorious counter pintxos their hot pintxos are must try, especially the Itxaso. The proper way of enjoying pintxo would be to order a glass of wine and munch on 1 or 3 pintxos before moving on but I'm an uncouth American damnit so I stopped at 13! And yes, that was our pre-dinner snack!

Compared to the other pintxos bars that we went to over 2 separate trips to San Sebastian, this was just okay. They had about 15-20 types of prepared pintxos on the bar, an average selection for a smaller pintxos bar. Nothing looked super appetizing from the pre-made choices, and since fresh pintxos from the kitchen are usually always better, we went that route. Txopito - Basically 3 pieces of lightly deep fried squid on a piece of bread, topped with caramelised onions. Was just okay, nothing too memorable. Txalupa - Gratinado de Setas con Langostinos - Mushrooms with crabs on top of a pastry shell. There wasn't a ton of crab here, but it was still good. This was one of the pintxos that I liked best from here. Itxaso - Rape con Crema de Marisco - This is mashed up monkfish (like a white fish) with cream and seafood. I liked this one, and it probably tied the txalupa for the ones I liked best out of this bunch. Risotto with Foie Gras - They love their foie gras here, so when you get risotto with mushrooms and foie gras on top, it's decadent and rich. I've had other risottos that were better so I wouldn't trek out of my way to get this here, but if you like foie and you like risotto, this is a heartier, more filling pintxo. Overall, we had these 4 pintxos and 2 glasses for wine for ~$22 which is not too bad, considering there was foie and seafood in the mix. It's a fine place to come if you're in Gros and don't want to go into Parte Vieja, but I think there are better tapas in Parte Vieja. Not bad, but not amazing to give up stomach space when you could be eating elsewhere. If you do come, stick to the food that you order from the kitchen.

Items Selected: Foie Torchon with Marmalade and Balsamic Baccala with crispy Onions and Peppers Queso, Iberico, Foie, Marmalade Torta Chicken Croquetta Coffee Flan, Vanilla Ice Cream Separating two Michelin 3* meals by nearly six hours with exploration of San Sebastian limited by falling rain and whipping wind that continued as it had throughout the week in Northeast Spain it was part hunger, part interest, and part seeking shelter that led me to Bar Bergara just after 18h00, and with several upscale Pintxo's offered in a space both large and modern the dining experience proved to be a mixed one, service almost "French" in its disinterest with cost-to-quality ratios skewed too far leftward. No doubt more 'upscale' than Gatz or El Globo in Bilbao, the lighting alone an improvement as visitors are treated to large tables and polished surfaces with concrete floors and ceilings spanning high, the process at Bar Bergara is nonetheless similar to that of other like-places and grabbing a plate with eyes on diversity as opposed to 'filling up' a five Pintxo sampling was selected along with a kitchen plated dessert. Benefited by an early arrival, everything I tasted from the bar still warm except for the creamy liver that one would not expect to be anyhow, it was with bites of salt cod on toasted bread beneath chopped peppers and onions that the meal commenced, an "all my favorite things" follow-up of pork, cheese, and foie gras as decadent as it sounds though lent nice balance by bright citrus marmalade. Turning to tradition for plate two, the €2.50 croquetta not only expensive but a bit oily despite being "fresh," a better series of bites was located in the springy Spanish Torta with finely diced potatoes accented in Paprika while the simultaneously delivered flan was rich in espresso notes alongside half-melted ice cream that was unfortunately quite bland.

Bar Bergara has won tons of awards for their tapas and they are very different than your usual Spanish tapas bars. Their dished are unique and creative and play with different textures and flavors. Come into the restaurant and ask for a plate. The cold tapas are served at the bar and you can just pick them as you please. The hot tapas need to be ordered from the server. At the end, you just tell them how many cold and how many hot tapas you had and they give you a check, usually 2.50-3 Euros each. My favorites were: -Txalupa (creamy, crunchy, hot, lobster/fish on a little tart) -Tortilla de Anchoas (cold toast with an egg omelette stuffed with potato and anchovies) -Itxaso (shrimp/fish with cream on tart, hot) -Udaberri (hot, creamy ham on a tart) -Hamburguesa de Tomate (cold, cod with tomato confit, very refreshing) Make sure you order some alcohol and sit and enjoy with the locals. Don't get full on this stop, there are tons of other places to eat!

    Sooo good !!!

We opted for a few pintxos for lunch while we were visiting town. We also had a couple of drinks my husband got whiskey with coke and I asked for a local cocktail since I'm not much of a wine drinker. I was handed a cup of pacharán which was a bit strong but was nice to try something different. The pintxos came out one at a time which was nice we were able to fully enjoy each on their own. The bao was the only one I didn't really like mostly the bun part. It didn't taste like it was cooked all the way and was a bit gummy and there was not a lot of meat filling. Next was the lamb which was really tender and flavorful. The couscous was ok nothing special and not much seasoning to it. Then the beef cheek and mashed potatoes came out which was the star of the pintxos that we had. It was also very tender and the mash was also cooked perfectly. All of this was shared between the two of us and was very filling. The waiter let us know that some of the pinxtos could also be ordered in a full size if we wanted. We enjoyed sampling the pinxtos and would definitely recommend coming here to get a taste of local cuisine.

The lineup is legendary: the txuleta steak, the tomato salad, the Padrón peppers, and of course, the tortilla that sells out instantly. They make only two tortillas a day, and getting your name on the list feels like joining a local rite of passage. Here's the twist: although the tortilla is the most famous item, it actually wasn't our favorite version in the city. It's still fun to chase, still a cool story to tell, but the real stars of the meal were the steak -- charred, juicy, perfectly salted -- and the tomatoes, which taste like they've been engineered for maximum summer. They only make 2 tortillas a day, so you have to stand in line before they open to get a reservation for a slice. Inside, it's tiny, loud, and joyful.
