    Ham broth

This was the first restaurant we tried when we arrived in San Sebastián. It was around 2 in the afternoon during the week in the off season (March) so we had no trouble being seated right away. The restaurant is in the basement so there are no windows but they have a lovely wall with a drawing of the countryside that makes it feel less like a dungeon. They have a regular menu and daily specials but we decided to go with the tasting menu to try as many things as possible. I loved the salty ham broth they brought out right away. My fiancé's favorite was the soft egg with Emmental consommé. My favorite would be the fish with the citrus sauce. The fish was light and flake and the gentle citrus flavor was a great compliment to the fish. Another notable mention was the meat and mash - I'm not exactly sure what was mashed in there but it was thick and almost cheesy. It clung so well to the meat if you dipped it in. The desserts were also very good, the strawberries bring light and refreshing and the French bread being heavier with an almost creamy center and caramelized crunch on the outside almost like a creme brûlée.

Went back here for the third time and it's even better than I remember. If you're looking for an upscale Michelin type meal at an affordable price with great wine this is definitely your place--terrific for lunch.

We selected to try the tasting menu. We were very impressed with all the items. You would think small portions are not enough to fill you up, wrong ! We walked out of there with a full stomach lol ! They're Michelin rating did not disappoint ! Great job !

This restaurant is one of several restaurants that shows how high-quality food is easily accessible outside of 2-3 star michelin establishments. Make a reservation! Although the entrance looks like another pintxo place, it's a sit-down only restaurant that serves seasonal and hearty basque cuisine and I was very impressed by the menu selection and the technique used to cook all the fresh ingredients. If you're visiting for food and don't want to pay hundreds of euros per meal, this is an excellent bang-for-your-buck alternative. The ambience was classy (feels recently built), the service is warm, everybody speaks basic English, and I'd definitely pair your meal with a local bottle of red wine or sidra/cider (but ask for recs from your server)!

We did their tasting menu and the experience was fantastic. First off the setting in the restaurant was great. Food presentation was amazing and everything was so unique and flavorful in its own way. Would definitely recommend if you're looking for a fine dining experience that is relatively affordable. On top of that, the staff were super nice and explained all the dishes to us and how to best enjoy them.

We arrived for lunch and were welcomed with a whimsical little menu which made a great keepsake for our food centered trip (see pictures). I'm not sure what a man riding a big fish means but it's entertaining to give him his own story. Our wooden table was engraved with a map of the city....great conversation piece since your phone should really be off for this meal. The red drink they served in a juice glass is their version of gazpacho. It's been strained smooth and light but full of flavor! That egg thing (Slow cooked egg with Emmental consommé) was unreal and it's custom bowl...exquisite! The cookies were served in a wooden box that looked like a log with drawers. Each drawer filled with cookies! So fun! I'm surprised this place doesn't have a Michelin Star.

If you look for something different than simple tapas or sangria but still You would like to taste a bit of Spain You must visit restaurant Bodegon Alejandro in San Sebastian. Meals served in this restaurant are not only kind of fun of taste but also fun of convention. The teast of food maches their amazing look and the way of serving them. If you belong to the brave tasters do not miss the chance for trying a tasting menu of 6 courses to find the roots of Basque in every dish. Enjoy - We did :-)

The Cod Dish. I ate only half. Too salty and the Hollandaise was too heavy for the fish.

Pretty disappointing - and not sure if they are capable of keeping the Star.. We arrived 5 minutes before 8:00 pm and were told to go back outside, by a woman who was combing her hair at the front reception...Guess that even though the doors are open, they are NOT open. Ok. Fine. She must manage the place, because she sure doesn't act like she answers to anyone... Maybe she owns it? Who knows... When we returned, we sat at our table for 10 minutes before a menu or a drink was offered. That's a very LONG time. Seemed like we caught them on an Off Night all together. When the server finally came, she was the same nonchalant woman from the front- and VERY casually dressed, and approached us with this greeting "ready to order?" Not at all what we had in mind for service! Our table was never wiped down, crumbs and sauce stayed in place throughout the service. We even had to pour our own wine, ( we bought two bottles ) and after asking for wine service from a passing back waiter, they still never received the hints... The food was just OK. I have had better Pinxtos all week.... we ordered the Hake, the local Cod and the beef steak. The cod was very salty and had a heavy hollandaise smothering the top. Skip that one. The beef was pretty good. Note- they don't offer knives with your fish dishes, so you have to really be skilled with that fork, can be tough with the fish skins... Also no bread plates. Crumbs all over. And oddly, not olive oil or butter for the breads. When they serve the entrees, they never, ever come back. Period. I looked around the room, several tables had that look of deep concern, either waiting for a drink, a menu, a waiter, the check, something.... Waiting. The last straw was when one diner in our party was served her chocolate soufflé , she finished it, and when she was done, my husband's Apple Tart finally appeared. Literally 15 minutes after our daughter's soufflé. Terrible service, poor management or ownership, and mediocre cuisine. Too many other great restaurants in San Sebastián. I'd be surprised if they get a Star in 2019.

Watching the square come alive in the evening while dining beneath the illuminated basilica made for a memorable experience. We ordered several pintxos to share, and every dish was excellent. The standout was the Carrillera (slow-braised beef cheek with mashed potatoes), which was incredibly tender, rich, and comforting. The Platillo de Bonito with tuna, anchovies, green peppers, and olives was fresh and full of classic Basque flavors. The Panceta (pork belly) was another highlight, perfectly crisp on the outside and meltingly tender inside. We also loved the creamy Croqueta de Jamón Ibérico, and the Bacalao Confitado con Pil Pil de Piquillos was beautifully cooked, with delicate cod and a silky piquillo pepper pil pil sauce. We couldn't resist trying the Pintxo Especial as well, and it was a great addition to the meal. The staff were warm and accommodating, helping us get a table outside and making us feel welcome throughout the evening. Inside, the restaurant has a lively, authentic Basque atmosphere, but the outdoor seating overlooking one of San Sebastián's most iconic churches makes the experience even more special. If you're looking for traditional Basque pintxos in a fantastic location, Atari is an easy recommendation. We'd happily come back on our next visit.

We opted for a few pintxos for lunch while we were visiting town. We also had a couple of drinks my husband got whiskey with coke and I asked for a local cocktail since I'm not much of a wine drinker. I was handed a cup of pacharán which was a bit strong but was nice to try something different. The pintxos came out one at a time which was nice we were able to fully enjoy each on their own. The bao was the only one I didn't really like mostly the bun part. It didn't taste like it was cooked all the way and was a bit gummy and there was not a lot of meat filling. Next was the lamb which was really tender and flavorful. The couscous was ok nothing special and not much seasoning to it. Then the beef cheek and mashed potatoes came out which was the star of the pintxos that we had. It was also very tender and the mash was also cooked perfectly. All of this was shared between the two of us and was very filling. The waiter let us know that some of the pinxtos could also be ordered in a full size if we wanted. We enjoyed sampling the pinxtos and would definitely recommend coming here to get a taste of local cuisine.

We actually stopped by the day before, but it was already closed, so we made sure to come back the following evening. It was definitely worth it. Unlike many pintxos bars where the food is already displayed on the counter, everything here is cooked to order. The place is small, lively, and always packed, with people spilling out onto the narrow streets of the Old Town while waiting for their dishes. It has that energetic atmosphere that makes San Sebastián's food scene so much fun. We ordered the dishes the bar is best known for, starting with the Carrillera de Ternera (beef cheek). It was unbelievably tender, rich, and practically melted with every bite. We also tried the famous Idiazabal "risotto," which isn't actually risotto but creamy orzo pasta cooked with smoked Idiazabal cheese. It was comforting, creamy, and completely different from anything we'd had before. One surprise of the evening was the tomato salad. It sounds simple, but the tomatoes were incredibly sweet and juicy, finished with excellent olive oil and flaky sea salt. Sometimes the simplest dishes leave the biggest impression. I noticed almost every table ordering the Pork Rib "Kebab," one of the restaurant's signature dishes, so that's definitely on my list for next time. If you're planning a pintxos crawl through San Sebastián's Old Town, Borda Berri deserves a stop. Come early if you can, expect to stand, order a few of the house specialties, and enjoy the lively atmosphere. It's easy to see why this little bar has become such a favorite among both locals and visitors.

This is where the famous Basque cheesecake was created, and after finally tasting it, I completely understand why people line up for it. The first thing that surprised me was the texture. If you're expecting a dense New York-style cheesecake, this is completely different. It's incredibly creamy and custard-like in the center, with a beautifully caramelized top that adds just the right amount of depth. It's rich without feeling heavy, and somehow disappears from your plate much faster than you'd expect. I also loved that La Viña still feels like a traditional neighborhood bar rather than a tourist attraction. Locals stop in for pintxos and wine, while visitors from all over the world come for a slice of cheesecake. The mix gives the place a lively, authentic atmosphere that's part of the experience. My advice? Don't overthink it. Order the cheesecake, find a spot if you can, and enjoy it exactly where it was born. Sometimes the originals really are the best, and this is one of those cases. If you're visiting San Sebastián, La Viña is a stop that's absolutely worth making.
