Service was good and restaurant was nice not too crowded and lots of options to choose from on the menu. They also had the menu in english which is helpful. We opted for a few pintxos for lunch while we were visiting town. We also had a couple of drinks my husband got whiskey with coke and I asked for a local cocktail since I'm not much of a wine drinker. I was handed a cup of pacharán which was a bit strong but was nice to try something different. The pintxos came out one at a time which was nice we were able to fully enjoy each on their own. The bao was the only one I didn't really like mostly the bun part. It didn't taste like it was cooked all the way and was a bit gummy and there was not a lot of meat filling. Next was the lamb which was really tender and flavorful. The couscous was ok nothing special and not much seasoning to it. Then the beef cheek and mashed potatoes came out which was the star of the pintxos that we had. It was also very tender and the mash was also cooked perfectly. All of this was shared between the two of us and was very filling. The waiter let us know that some of the pinxtos could also be ordered in a full size if we wanted. This was our introduction to the ultra-clean and simple flavors of basque cuisine, served with an almost impossible degree of finesse and precision with some of the freshest ingredients imaginable. Crazy busy on a Saturday night at 8. When we left at 8:30, people were seated on the steps of the convent across the street, drinking wine or beer, waiting for tables to open up (many of the tables both inside and in the plaza were reserved starting a 8 and going to 9:30 pm. Had delicious patatas bravas, along with a pork belly pinxtos and grilled shrimp brochette to go with a glass of rioja (me) and a beer (my aunt). My Dad and I had the BEST experience here during our 3 night stay in San Sebastián. Do not miss this place...it's a gem. Our darling server, Marta, took incredible care of us. We let her choose all our pintxos and she nailed all 6 of them, including desserts. She even scolded another server for delivering one of our pintxos because she wanted to tell us about it. And, she even let us take a photo with her. Cannot say enough about the food, service and atmosphere. 4.5 stars The selection of pintxos and raciones at Atari Gastroteka in San Sebastian's old town was rather small compared to other pintxo bars in the area, but the quality of the dishes was completely on point! We started with the Platillo Bonito, a small dish of tuna, anchovies, green olives, and pickled peppers. This was such a simple assortment of items, but each of the flavors was so distinct. The green olives were some of the sweetest olives I've ever had; the tuna was flaky and meaty, the anchovies were salty and umami, and the pickled peppers had a pleasant acidic, briney taste and a spicy kick! The Croqueta de Bacalao were two croquettes made with a creamy codfish batter (good but skippable), but the most impressive dish we ordered had to be the Pulpo a la Plancha, which featured a huge, thick, grilled octopus tentacle served over new potatoes, grilled onion/pepper, and a creamy red aioli-like sauce that was perfect for eating with the potatoes and dipping with bread. First pintxos bar of my trip to San Sebastián and it was a good ease into the culture. Although, after eating at so many places I'd have to say this restaurant falls to the middle or bottom of the pack. The service was good, they spoke English and the interior is pretty spacious but beware, a lot of people reserve tables during dinner time so don't expect to be seated if you don't have a reservation. Lunch seemed to be an easier walk in ticket to score. We tried several dishes: Patatas bravas: not impressed with this dish, I've had better in my past Spain travels. They give you a tomato sauce/salsa kind of dip and an aioli to dip in. The tomato sauce was good but other than that not noteworthy. Grilled octopus: this dish was difficult, because one leg was cooked perfectly and one was chewy. The sauce was delicious though, but preferably with them properly cooked tail. Iberian ham croquettes: not my cup of tea, I love Iberian ham but this had so much cheese and lacked the simplicity or plain Iberian ham. Beef cheeks: the beef was tender but not a fan of the sauce. However, the mashed potatoes that were served with this dish were delightful. They were put in a soufflé dish and broiled before serving so the crust was crispy and the inside was nice and buttery. read more

Wow! Friends recommended this place and we are so happy we went and got a seat. Their Pulpo dish is so good and I think they got the tentacles off a Kraken. I had high expectations for this place given the great reviews, but it was a thoroughly below average meal. If you're looking at the reviews going, "WOW! What a great place," then keep looking. I'd go to Bar Sport instead and grab some small plates. Save some cash, eat well. Some of the dishes - pork belly, especially - lacked any flavor beyond a really heavy mustard. Dragon Chicken wasn't anything special - I could have gotten this anywhere. Rice I could have made myself. Asparagus was forgettable. Beef cheeks were a highlight. That was a tasty one. Just very...blah. Banquet food for the masses. They charge you 10% of your bill to sit outside. It's a lovely area, but you're also contending with mediocre street performers blasting their horns, kids running around, and folks coming up to you asking for money. 10% for what? Service was very polite. Exclusively a tourist destination. No locals here. Open Mondays which was a plus. read more

Awesome experience. This was a recommendation from a native person from San Sebastian and it hit the spot. We came before they put out all the pinxhos at the bar but ordered off the menu. This was also my first experience with this type of eating and it was interesting and fun. The food is very good and you get a taste of a bunch of different stuff for a good price. We started with the patatas bravas, beef cheek, and seafood rice. Then we went with the fried peppers, sirloin, cheeseboard, and oxtail stuffed pepper. A lot of unique tastes and each has its own distinct flavor and texture. The best thing was the beef cheek and the oxtail stuffed pepper. We ate at a standing only table and had the red wine as well. I suggest the remellion but they only have that by the bottle. Such a great experience. I would get here early because this place fills up quick. Get here before 7-7:30 and get your place at the bar. San Sebastián has many many great Pintxo joints but Atari is the best because of superior quality and variety of food (including vegetarian/vegan options), availability of - heated/covered - outdoor seating (most Pintxo joints are standing only and maybe harder for some people), and very helpful and accommodating staff. Perhaps they were just overwhelmed because the place was PACKED. Clearly a favorite among both tourists and locals. The foie was absolutely killer. Highly recommend. Also a favorite is the Torrija, a bread-pudding like dessert. Also, for those with children or people with disabilities this pinxto bar had plenty of seating! I have two absolute favorite pintxo spots in the old part of San Sebastian: La Cuchara de San Telmo and Atari Gastroteka. The pintxos here at Atari are superb. The last time I was here I ordered the following: Foie. A must order. The foie is perfectly cooked and this last time it was deliciously paired with a pumpkin puree and cornbread. Ration of octopus. Beautifully visually and taste wise. Perfectly grilled and served on potatoes with a smokey sauce. Carrilleras (Beef Cheeks). Melts in your mouth and served on potato puree. This place is also a great option for a sit down dinner. I'd recommend reservations unless you get there early. (Expect to still see tables with reserved cards for a certain time). read more

Our very first experience with tapas. The food was amazing! A few prosciutto or salami dishes, a few raw fish dishes, even a couple veggie dishes. All elegantly assembled and displayed. Fair warning: this is probably the most popular spot in Donostia. The crowds are huge here and last well into the night. We lucked out, incredibly, by getting an outdoor table here at midday. The star at Atari is the octopus. This bad boy is expertly cooked, resulting in a very tender meat with crispy tentacles. Its served with potatoes, peppers, a spicy aioli, and some sort of vinegar/pepper liquid. Its one of the most memorable dishes I've ever had. We stopped at Atari on a whim, not having seen it on any of our "must visit" restaurant lists. It turned out to be my favorite place in San Sebastian. First off, I love that they're open all day, not closing between lunch and dinner, and you can order food all day. We stopped by for a snack one afternoon, and it was so good, we kept ordering more and more tapas. Secondly, we were craving vegetables after five days in Spain, and Atari had a legit salad, probably the only one we had up to that point. Once we got the salad out of the way, we started trying some things we saw at other tables, and they did not disappoint. The steak was the clear winner, and I loved that you could get it in pintxo size. The foie gras and risotto were also good. The cheesecake ice cream was amazing, the perfect end to what turned out to be a pretty substantial meal. This place was a crowd pleaser that we had to visit it twice. Slow cooked egg - what they do it slow cook an egg and put it over some combination of what I'm guessing is rice and braised beef. Bomb Caesar Salad - Pro tip: always ask for dressing on the side. Also applies when you're in Spain. Salad was great but overdid it on the dressing.
