I was so shocked when I found a Peri Peri place opened up in Avon of all places, but I'm thrilled they're here!! The food was absolutely amazing. I love peri peri chicken and got the rice plate. Everything tasted delicious and the staff/service were super nice and speedy. I would definitely come back here again. It's one of those order at the counter places with an option to dine in. Would definitely come back!

My family and I had a great experience here. We are a group of 6 plus a baby and we had wonderful service. Great to see new and different halal restaurants opening up in CT. The staff were super friendly and nice, food came out fast and fresh. We ordered the family platter and wings and they were so good. The medium spice was perfect as it still had a kick to it but wasn't super spicy. The sides were really good, especially the rice and potato salad. Definitely try the garlic sauce too. Chicken was so flavorful and moist. Price is also very fair for the amount of food you get. Restaurant is clean and there is plenty of seating, plus high chairs. Bathrooms are also clean and have changing tables. We'll definitely be back!

"And I can break away to the better life Where the shackles…read morenever hold me down I'm gonna make a way for each happy day As my life turns around" (The Beach Boys) You might understandably think your navigation system has gone kerflooey when you set a course for the Breakaway Bistro at 195 W Main St in Avon. That's because when you pull into the shopping plaza.....you don't see it. But if you circle around to the right, you'll see it on the side of the strip mall's buildings. And trust me, this spot is definitely worth hunting down to experience a standout breakfast or lunch. We walked in a little before 1:00 yesterday and found a table for two in the back left corner of the dining room, so we had a good view of the entire room. I have to tell ya, the place was packed! Breakaway closes at 3:00 every day except Sunday (2:00), and there were breakfast and lunch menus out, plus a few daily specials. My wife went with a "William's Ham Panini" ($17) with thin sliced ham, bacon, caramelized onions, cheddar and honey mustard on a grilled panini. We both were struck at how much ham was piled onto her sandwich. She had a few choices for a side dish and put her nickel down on potato salad. I went with The JT Salad ($16). The menu says it's been their "best-selling salad 25 years and counting". It was a big portion of mixed greens served with house balsamic dressing, grape tomatoes, gorgonzola cheese, and grilled chunks of teriyaki glazed chicken breast. It was stellar, with plenty of that yummy cheese and chicken. The only sour note with our lunch was a rather steep $4.25 for a glass of iced tea that was half-filled with ice. The food was very good and a decent amount of leftovers came home with us for another day. I was unexpectedly impressed by how crowded Bistro was on a random Monday. I bet you'll be too.

So far, I've had prime NY Strips, ribeyes, picanha (top sirloin cap) and Porterhouse steaks here and all were absolutely divine. They even may have a few cuts that don't make it on the shelf but you can ask for them and they might make your day even better. This store has quite a bit more than an impressive array of butcher cuts. You'll find all sorts of meat and seafood swimming in a number of different marinades. They have deli meats, and you'll probably prefer them here to anywhere else in Avon (and really anywhere in Hartford and its surrounding cities). Are you looking for some fancy tri-colored pasta? They got that. Natalie's Juice? It's here. Elk and venison? Maybe some other exotic cuts? They got quite a few in here. They even have a decent beer selection. And I haven't even started talking about all of their prepared food which is far better than what you'll find in most high end grocery stores. In any event, along with the Fresh Market chain's Avon location, you can pretty much source all of your non-basic wants and needs at these two shops.

So the counter person took them back up to the register to check the prices, they were in the $23 & $24 range for 14 ounces. That's double the price I pay for ground venison and ground elk at the Litchfield Locker, the prices there are $11.99/lb (venison) & 10.99/lb (elk) respectively. So, needless to say, I just wasn't interested in being fleeced, no thanks. I won't be returning.

These days it's hard to find a cafe that isn't overpriced and better than just average. But Toasted Oat hits the high points of quality of cook on the food, even if the ingredients may not all be top notch. They have breakfast sandwiches, bowls and scrambles, as well as regular sandwiches, salads and burritos. We enjoyed the regular breakfast sandwich with spinach and cheese (subbed the meat but wish the spinach had been cooked in - $7) and the breakfast scramble which included 2 eggs, 3 veggies, cheese, protein all mixed/cut up together, as well as hash brown (didn't exactly look homemade?) and toast ($11). Everything was served in to-go containers so the looks weren't the best but makes sense given the place and that most people probably don't dine in. You order at the counter and they bring you your food. Everything takes time to come out so you know it's done to order. They also have some coffee and tea. They had a few coffee cake items in a glass display but didn't look homemade either. It feels like a cafe should have more selection of pastries but again bother me. Service was friendly and patient. The actual location isn't that great visually either. There is one longer table and a few smaller ones, but it's not a big place and not decorated to impress (fine by me!) It is located in a small nondescript plaza with an Indian market. Small parking lot. Wish this small business well!

My brunch buddy and I had to make a last minute change of plans, so we landed at Toasted OAT today for breakfast. There are a few tables in a roped off section of the parking lot to eat outside. Inside, there's a long table in the middle, 3 smaller tables on the left, and a bar at the window. We had no problem getting a seat, but it seems like it's more of a take-and-go place than a destination to eat. There are a lot of customizations you can make to your food order, which is more easily done in their online ordering system--but there's a $1.95 service fee to use it. My friend and I made our decisions based off of that system but ordered at the counter. While there are a lot of breakfast and lunch options, there aren't many beverages. Coffee, hot chocolate, and tea are the mainstays for warm beverages, and all cold beverages other than cold brew coffee are prepackaged bottles in a cooler and run just short of $4. Every order, whether it's take-out or eat-in, is served in disposable packaging with disposable utensils. I ordered the Reuben bowl without eggs and a side waffle with syrup. Kind of love that I could get a side waffle. It took a while for the food to come out. It felt longer than it should have been for how few people were there, but I didn't time it. My waffle was cold. The tator tots in the Reuben bowl, however, were cooked perfectly, as were my friend's hash browns. Everything tasted great. If you're looking for the picturesque weekend brunch experience, this isn't it. But if you want a quick bite that's well made with quality ingredients and no-fuss beverages, you'll be very happy here. Even more so if you want to take it on the go.

They also have jams, honey, bread and little snacks. We tried the homemade strawberry jam and it's lovely. On Tuesdays, the soups are two for one (I believe this is every Tuesday, but maybe it was just on the Tuesday I happened to be there), which is a great deal. I have a feeling this place will be in our weekly rotation once the fall weather kicks in.

They had a slew of $5 side dishes like vegetable quinoa, pasta salad, tuna mac, roast carrots, etc. And how can we forget dessert? I saw some cupcakes and macaroons. There were two very pleasant young folks behind the counter who took my order and placed my entrée and a bag of six macaroons ($5) inside a complimentary tote bag. They asked me to check out the freebies on a table on the way out, so I helped myself to a pen, a pad and a book of matches. The Eggplant Lasagna was plenty big for us to split. It had a nice blanket of mozzarella on top with lots of thinly sliced breaded eggplant, creamy ricotta, and sauce. It was very good, but I think it could have used a bit more sauce. And those macaroons? OUTSTANDING!! Very moist, very soft, very coconutty. The Bee's Knees provided us with very good quality food, a generous quantity for $14, and all things considered an excellent value.
