Note: I'm just reviewing this place as a shop, no events or game nights. I've been here a couple of times and it's always clean and the staff is incredibly helpful. The area it is in is a strip mall so there are other things around to take a look at. On one visit, my friend wanted to know the status of an order she had placed, and if the shop could change the name on her order. The guy behind the counter helped change the name no problem. He was super efficient and even checked if there was anything else that needed to be altered in the system on the shop's end. I thought this was really rad. They have the standard comic book store items. It is not huge, but it is well organized and they're willing to order any books they do not have in stock already. By far the coolest team of comic/graphic novel enthusiasts ever. My nephew wanted to learn more about darker/horror comics but was too shy to go in. Naturally I had to inquire for the little guy, and I am immensely happy I did. I've shopped at tribe a handful of times for my weekly pathfinder game accessories etc, but never have I pursued the new and ever expanding world of graphic literature. Both gentlemen helped me get going in the right direction with heaps of knowledge and guidance. Needless to say, they've got two customers for life. My nephew is halfway through Alan Moore's "Swamp Thing" and I have to fight him to put it down so we can eat lunch ha! Myself: A quarter of the way through Jodorowsky & Moebius' "The Incal" and I can't stop reading it. A wild story which many other projects in the genre seem to have been "inspired" by. The best part of finding new things is being apart of a tight knit community. Even if it's just the start, I'll report back in a year once I've cut my teeth on many more novels. read more

LOVE these guys and love having a comic shop in my neighborhood! I've been coming to Tribe for about 2 years now. First stopped by on Free Comic Book Day a few years ago and bought a board game from them a few months after that. My boyfriend and I wanted to start reading comics again, but we had no idea what was going on in the current universes for DC and Marvel. We only knew some characters we were interested in. Roy and Eric were awesome at helping us catch up on what was going on with our favorite characters. They suggested some really great past story arcs and trades featuring some of our choices. They are always willing to help you figure out what you want to know about almost anything comic related. I just wanted to make a note about how great these guys treat their female customers. I've been to other comic stores where you get uncomfortable looks or people are just not willing to spend time helping you out. But these guys are always willing to answer my questions, even if they are silly. I've seen them interact with other female customers with the same respect I've received. Kudos guys! Needless to say, we started a subscription here and spend at least $10 a week. They don't carry a huge back stock of comics, but what they really know is their board games. They carry a good selection of games and will give you awesome advise on any game you're interested in. I was not really into board games when I started going here, but now I have a nice little collection. They also host a game night at Rockin' Tomato every Tuesday night. One of their volunteers brings a huge supply of games that anyone who is interested is allowed to borrow for a game. Pizza and fellow gamers makes for a good evening. It's a great place to try out new games or play old favorites. Overall, I cannot say enough good things about Tribe. It's one of my favorite place south of the river. I hope I never move north, because I'll just have to drive forever to get my weekly comics. =D read more

Super helpful staff that is always able to make recommendations. We come here for our regular pull list as well as some of the other scheduled events. Great selection of new comics and graphic novels. Decent selection of board games. They have a lot of demo games available if there is anything you're interested in trying out. IMHO they have the best selection of RPG figures in town with an ok selection of 40k figures and sets, as well as, some super hero action figures. read more

I thought I would be more excited to not have to go all the way up to Austin Books when Tribe opened up. They have a decent selection of books and games, a lot of collectable action figures, but not too many statues. When I come here on the weekend, the parking lot is filled with people at the laundry, so spaces can be at a premium. I've never encountered anyone unfriendly or unhelpful here. The store has a no return policy once you open the game. I bought a game that was recommended by one the employees. I tried to go local and support local business. The game was already 10$ more expensive than Amazon and plus they accept returns... I don't recommended shopping here if you don't know exactly what you want and are willing to spend more. read more

Every time I come in here I'm greeted by incredibly friendly enthusiastic employees. Every time. I mostly come in for board games and without exception I've been approached by an employee eager to talk about games and make awesome suggestions. I went in today with my wife and kids and my son mentioned that he was interested in Magic: The Gathering. The gentleman who was checking us out said "Awesome! Let me get you some free starter packs from the back!" and then told us all about the Friday night get-togethers they have. Above and beyond service at every level. I am three things: a nerd, a chick, and a mom. That makes Tribe the only place in town where I go for my comics, dice, games and figurines. First, staff are super knowledgeable about their inventory and the market, which means I'm not having to wait for some dude to look something up - they know what they have, and can order anything they don't. I've never once gotten a creepy vibe from anyone at the store, which is pretty much unheard of for a chick in a comic book store. I've also never had someone insist that I prove my nerd-cred before buying something just because I happened to be toting mammaries (ahem, Dragon's Lair, ahem.) My kids are proto-nerds, and the staff has always been very cool with them, recommending comic books based on their interests and never once giving them the screwy eye often given when you bring kids into a small store. As a result, Tribe is the place my kids insist on when they go to spend their allowance money. read more

Tribe Comics has a customer for life. I've been searching all over for a semi-new yet out of print comic and while browsing their impressive selection, a lady came to my aid. She said they only had the volume and not the single issue which was what I'd heard at a few other places. While checking out with some other finds, she came from the back room of the store with THE comic. In all its shiny glory, there it was, first issue, first print and great condition. Get this, it was in the damage bin in the back, all set to be tossed out! Although I still can't figure out what's wrong with it, I was ready to pay for it when she tells me it's on the house. Whaaat?? Not only did she go out of her way to search for me, she side-steps making a little profit by handing it over free of charge. Wow. Nice spot for comics in South Austin. Near my wife's school so I can run in and buy some comics when I pick her up. Unfortunately, it's proximity causes me to forget my pledge to only buy trades online from now on.The selection seems pretty good. On new comic Wednesday, it pays to arrive early. Being a smaller store, they do seem to have sell-outs. I've been in before when they have had some nice sales on Marvel Omnibuses (Omnibi?) If you don't know these are big $100 tomes of classic or modern classic comics. Their sale was half off! Since I already had what was offered, I nearly bought a few to flip on eBay! Hopefully some True Believer fan got ahold of these beauties at an amazing price! Customer service has always been top notch here. The parking is a little sketchy. One entrance exit is sloped so that I will consistently scrape the bottom of my car going in and out. The exit onto Manchaca is a bit harrowing. So keep your eyes peeled. read more

Tribe is my home away from home. Like, we eat dinner there almost every Friday night. (Yeah, I'm that loud redheaded woman who reads too much X-Men.) Eric, Roy, Oz, and Jonathan have welcomed as as customers and friends from the get-go, even when we brought a toddler into the shop who loved to throw all the plastic duckies on the floor. (We picked them up.) All of these guys are great sources of information and reading recommendations. They each have their own personality and knowledge base, so it's worth getting to know each one of them. They go out of their way to think of interesting stuff we might like based on what we've already read, track down books we're looking for, or give us an idea of how best to acquire them if they're out of print. They support other local businesses, even competitors. I have lost count of the number of times someone has called the shop looking for something, and I've heard a Tribe staffer give them at least one (if not more) recommendations on another local business to check, including driving directions. As a female comics fan, I cannot tell you how comfortable it is to walk into this shop knowing I am going to be just as welcome as any other fan. I haven't had negative experiences at other Austin shops, but I have heard horror stories from other gals about comic shops across the country. I've had lots of great conversations with other customers and enjoy running into some of them regularly at the shop. No one's ever "nerd checked" me to make sure I had memorized the entire canon before being willing to have a fun conversation with me about what Jason Aaron has done with Wolverine (oh the humanity!) As a mom, I also have really appreciated the guys at Tribe always treating my son as a human being with thoughts and feelings, rather than a nuisance or a potential disaster. (We work hard to make sure our kid is appropriate in public places, but they're kids, not robots.) He's growing up with a love for comics and games that comes from his parents, but is being nurtured by interacting with the guys at Tribe who accepted him as a fellow geek before he could even read on his own. It's the local business that really got me to understand the value of local businesses. read more

In fact, I love Tribe so much that this is where my friends and I host our semi-annual indie comic and art show. Tribe has become my goto store for comics. While, admittedly the decore and scale of the store isn't as impressive as AB&C, the guys who run the place are more personable and seam to genuinely care about their customers. They even do their best to remember you by name, and formally address you when you enter the store. Hearing "Hey there, Mr. Allen!" every time I walk in a store isn't normal at most - if any - retail stores. Eric seems to genuinely enjoy what he does, and makes an effort to engage the customers. I've watched as he patiently tolerated customers who'll rambal on and on about their latest video game escapade, and he smiles and nods without a hint of frustration. If they don't have what you're looking for they'll go the extra mile to order it and have it ready the next time you walk in! These are good people, and there's not reason I couldn't recommend them to anyone. read more

The comic and game selections is considerable and they were happy to order me a few items that they didn't have in stock, as well. The service is friendly and knowledgeable and they seem to genuinely care that you get what you want. I've used their subscription service frequently and have never been disappointed. They'll add my monthly comics, magazines, or even any new game releases. It really makes it easier to keep track and makes Wednesdays a weekly highlight (new comic release day). "Tribe" is a really appropriate name for the store, I love the sense of community. Staff and other customers always seem willing to shoot the breeze and talk about whatever. I once needed a game they didn't have, and when I wasn't patient enough to accept their offer to order it for me, they called *five or six* of their competitors around town to find it for me. Tribe is a fantastic place to shop for comics. The staff is incredibly friendly, knowledgeable and (most importantly) patient in dealing with any & all customers. I was recently given a gift from AB Comics (collector bobblehead), but did not get a receipt from the person that gave it to me. I'd tried to bring back the item to exchange for something else at AB Comics, but was not able to do so without a receipt (store policy). While I completely understood the policy, it was more the demeanor of the staff at the front desk that left a bad impression. By total contrast, Tribe had no issues helping me out. They provided a store credit (since they did carry some of those same items) and helped me find the item I was looking for in exchange. Since that visit, I've gone back and made 5-6 additional purchases at the store b/c of their awesome customer service. The staff just makes you feel welcome whether you're a "regular" or there for the first time. Can't say enough good things about these guys! Awesome place to get your comics! read more
